I want to tell you a story, based on true events. Dave is in his early twenties and he just started his new job as a Systems Engineer in this strange IT company. His ambition is to become the most aspiring and omniscient operator the company has seen. Through his journey of debugging issues and hunting users he learns many things helping him to troubleshoot and improve running systems. Taught to him by his old and wise colleagues. Unfortunately, at some point in his career, Dave reaches a moment where none of the learned techniques can lead him to the solution of this sophisticated problem. What he needs is something that that can display all the data he collects with different tools in one single place. To find answers, he needs to link the data. This story is about how the art of data visualisation can change your whole perspective and help you find the right answers.

Something big happened in 2016. Cloud. Agile. Marketing Automation. Experience Journeys. European Song Contest. And my perspective on CMS changed in 2 notable ways: 1) It is no longer digital versus rest of the organisation or digital vs. business or even us vs. them. The door is now open. The target audience is the entire organisation and everyone is trying to speak digital. 2) CMS used to be the central piece of the digital platform, you could have called it the web operating system. Now customers have a stack, where CMS is just one out of several pieces. Both changes will radically change Umbraco and the rest of what remains in the CMS marketplace. In this talk, Janus will attempt to untangle what really happens when you truly put the customer first and factor these 2 changes in. Predicting the future is hard, but Janus will draw on experiences from smart customers and partners to offer suggestions for what lies ahead and how we might offer the best technical solutions to cater to the requirements of today and tomorrow.

That being said, the complexity of SQL queries can make it challenging to build lineage manually, particularly at the field level. Xuanzi Han, a member of Monte Carlo's data and product teams, tackled this challenge head-on by leveraging some of the most popular tools in the modern data stack, including dbt, Airflow, Snowflake, and ANother Tool for Language Recognition (ANTLR). Today in retail, financial services, media, telecommunications and a host of other industries, more and more business is transacted through consumer web sites and mobile applications. With new channels creating spikes in traffic, highly complex system architectures, and internet-savvy customers, websites and web applications must be tested at scale to maximize business results and avoid a catastrophic crash. However, whether due to time or cost or other reasons, upwards of 90 percent of web applications are not fully tested before launching. If testing is done, many times it's with a small percent of expected traffic, which is then extrapolated for an estimation of performance. Cloud computing is changing the game for testing web applications. Cloud testing enables, for the first time, performance testing that complements the lab and accounts for the conditions in a production environment, such as traffic spikes, network latency, firewalls, and other factors. And it can be done far more affordably than traditional testing methods, as part of agile development cycles, and without an army of highly skilled performance engineers.

Our motivation for creating Signalilo was to integrate alerts from existing Prometheus-based monitoring suites (e.g. for OpenShift Container Platform) into our company-wide Icinga2. Signalilo is currently deployed on 10 OpenShift clusters and forwards Prometheus alerts to Icinga2. In this talk, I will present the basic design of Signalilo and give a short overview of how we use Signalilo in our production monitoring to forward Prometheus alerts to Icinga2.

We have/had several instances for different areas, such as miscellaneous servers, clusters or even EU-Projects spanning several European sites. This talk is about our (still ongoing) transition from our icinga1 installation for general servers which is based on many config-files, changed by two people only, to a director based self-service. The goal is that our fellow admins can integrate new hosts by a few steps. The configuration is declarative. In the host-object they just choose templates and fill in fields and arrays. The actual icinga2-configuration is then done via apply-rules.

Talk by Simone Mainardi: Icinga2 offers useful checks when it comes to monitoring hosts and services in the network. It can ping, test HTTP and DNS services, or establish network connections to make sure everything is up and running. However, such checks are not always enough to ensure the network is operating smoothly with healthy hosts and services. Can you be sure there is no unwanted traffic towards hosts believed to be malicious? What about unencrypted communications and weak TLS? Why has the throughput of an host surged today? This talk discusses how Icinga2 can be integrated with ntopng to bring network checks a step forward. ntopng, a widely-known network visibility tool, will be used in combination with Icinga2 to create a framework for the timely detection of unwanted or suspicious activities in the network, beyond basic up-or-down checks.

Talk by Marco Bizzantino: In my talk I will demonstrate how monitoring works with the DevOps approach. Within an organisation, different people with different roles need to have a complete view over the whole infrastructure. One of the greatest benefits of Icinga is its ability to integrate with various tools and modules to satisfy the company’s requests. An example is OpenShift monitoring. I will point out the most important parts of monitoring OpenShift infrastructure while maintaining it’s complexity. In my approach I will show how we combine Icinga, Prometheus, Grafana and Elasticsearch for an overall OpenShift monitoring solution. Additional examples will show the benefits of using Icinga’s Business Process modelling to add more value to the result.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing

Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process. In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds. - These are slides of the talk given at IEEE International Conference on Software Testing Verification and Validation Workshop, ICSTW 2022.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex Proofs

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
