Comparing When you compare two things that are different, use the comparative form of adjectives. To form the comparative, add “ er”  to the adjective and put “ than”  after the adjective.  Adjective + er + than Example:  Iceland is  colder than  Mexico Mexico is  bigger than  Iceland.
If the adjective ends in  y , change the  y  to  i  and add  er . happy -> happ ier easy -> eas ier If the adjective ends in  e , add  r wide -> wide r fine -> fine r If the adjective ends in one consonant and there is one vowel before it, double the consonant. big -> big g e r   hot -> hot t e r
“ er” versus “more” When the adjective has more than 2 syllables, we put “more” in front of the adjective and “than” after. More  + adjective +  than.   Example:  New York City is  more expensive than  Mexico  City. Manhattan is  more crowded than  Queens.
