Adjectives, Comparative Part 2
- 2. Goal: Correctly write sentences comparing 2 things by using comparative adjectives.
- 3. Rubric HP: Correctly use the rules for when to add –er to the end of adjectives and when to use “more” in front of the adjective. Know to use “than”. Know how to use the 3 irregular adjectives.
- 4. Rubric P: Can do most of the previous, but sometimes forget to use the “change the y to i and add –er” rule.
- 5. Rubric PP: Can correctly write sentences using “more” plus a simple adjective plus the word “than”. Can’t use more complicated adjectives.
- 6. Rubric MP: Don’t remember to use the rules or to use “than” when comparing 2 things.
- 7. Rule #1 This is for adjectives that have only 1 syllable: tall young short old sweet smart green
- 8. Rule #1 Add -er to the end of the adjective. tall --- taller young --- younger short --- shorter old --- older sweet --- sweeter smart --- smarter green --- greener
- 9. Directions: Use the given parts of speech to write comparative sentences on a separate piece of paper….
- 10. …The plus signs show which noun has more of the quality described by the adjective….
- 11. …You MUST use the given adjectives.
- 12. Use the sentence frame: ____ is/are/am (adjective + er) than ____.
- 13. Example: adjective: sweet noun: red apples ++ noun: green apples +
- 14. adjective: sweet noun: red apples ++ noun: green apples + Red apples are sweeter than green apples.
- 15. 1. adjective: cold noun: Alaska ++ noun: Nevada +
- 16. 1. Alaska is colder than Nevada.
- 17. 2. adjective: clean noun: my room ++ noun: my sister’s room +
- 18. 2. My room is cleaner than my sister’s.
- 19. 3. adjective: bright noun: close stars ++ noun: distant stars of the same size +
- 20. 3. Close stars are brighter than distant stars of the same size.
- 21. 4. adjective: soft noun: Dairy Queen ice cream ++ noun: Breyer’s ice cream +
- 22. 4. Dairy Queen ice cream is softer than Breyer’s.
- 23. Note: If a 1-syllable adjective ends in an “e”, simply add –r to the end. blue --- bluer
- 24. 5. adjective: cute noun: puppies ++ noun: baby snakes +
- 25. 5. Puppies are cuter than baby snakes.
- 26. 6. adjective: wide noun: semi-trucks ++ noun: economy cars +
- 27. 6. Semi-trucks are wider than economy cars.
- 28. 7. adjective: lite noun: you ++ noun: a feather +
- 29. 7. You are liter than a feather.
- 30. Note: If an adjective is a closed syllable that ends in 1 consonant, you must double the consonant before adding –er. big biger bigger hot hoter hotter
