BH Telecom is a leading telecommunications provider in Bosnia and Herzegovina that wanted to become a regional leader in cloud and IoT services. To rapidly develop and launch new services, BH Telecom implemented IBM Cloud Orchestrator which reduced service launch times from months to hours. This allows BH Telecom to quickly onboard enterprise customers and grow its business in emerging markets.

Business challenge
To realize its vision of becoming
a regional leader in cloud and
internet-of-things (IoT) services,
BH Telecom looked for a way to
bring its innovative solutions to
market rapidly.
Transformation
BH Telecom teamed with BBS to
create an automated application
provisioning and development process
based on IBM® Cloud Orchestrator—
reducing launch times for new
services from months to hours.

Seizing an
opportunity
Cloud services and the IoT are set to
transform our homes and places of work,
and BH Telecom wants to be part of the
wave of change.
Adnan Hantalašević, Solutions Specialist
for M2M and Cloud Development at
BH Telecom, elaborates: “At BH Telecom,
our goal is to become the regional leader
in cloud and IoT services. We saw a huge
gap in the market for solutions that collect
and exchange data to enable smarter
environments, optimizing things like
power, water and lighting usage.
“Similarly, as the private cloud model
continues to mature, we are seeing
increasing numbers of enterprise
customers looking to avoid the cost and
complexity of managing their own server,
storage and networking resources in
house. We recognized that providing
a robust, secure and cost-effective
infrastructure-as-a-service [IaaS] platform
for enterprise clients would be a valuable
opportunity for growth.
“The challenge was how to deliver
these to customers at high speed and
competitive prices—it could take months
to build such a solution within our existing
environment. It was vital that we moved
faster to beat the competition, but that
we also never compromise on the
rock-solid reliability of our services, which
customers have come to expect.”
Conquering the
cloud
BH Telecom called on its long-term
partner BBS and IBM to create and
deploy an automated cloud provisioning
process based on IBM Cloud
Orchestrator. The company can now
rapidly provision and scale resources
from its private cloud environment,
running on IBM Power® 770 and
x86 servers.
“Combining our in-house expertise with
BBS’ knowledge meant that we were up
and running with IBM Cloud Orchestrator
in just nine months, a very short time
for a project like this,” says Adnan
Hantalašević. “We were the first in our
region (SEE) to deploy Cloud Orchestrator
to drive external services, and our bold
strategy has been an unqualified success.

“Using the IBM Cloud Orchestrator
solution, we can use pre-configured
patterns to set up new enterprise
customers in our private cloud quickly
and efficiently, and without disruption to
their day-to-day business operations.”
IBM solutions will also enable BH
Telecom to realize its vision of delivering
cutting-edge IoT services, with their IoT
platform provider QSS Sarajevo.
“Once our specialists have developed
a proposal for a client as to how we can
make their business smarter, they will
simply need to click on an image within
Cloud Orchestrator to launch the solution
in hours rather than months—a dramatic
time saving compared to traditional cloud
management technologies. Better still,
by architecting a maximum yearly four-
hour failover time—or 99.999 percent
uptime—into the solution, we ensure that
we offer consistently reliable services.”
Innovating for
success
Today, BH Telecom can rapidly onboard
enterprise clients to its IaaS, SaaS, PaaS
and IoT services—enabling it to grow its
business into a valuable new market.
“Within a year and a half, we had already
achieved full return on investment for the
IBM solution,” states Adnan Hantalašević.
“By enabling ultra-short time-to-market
for our services, it helps us get ahead
of the competition. And because
Cloud Orchestrator drives greater
utilization of our resources, we can offer
customers the scalable, flexible and
competitively priced solutions that can
tempt them to take their first steps into
the cloud and, eventually, IoT.”
Internally, feedback for the new solution
has been positive. Adnan Hantalašević
concludes: “Adoption of the IBM solution
was very smooth, and Cloud Orchestrator
has become the cornerstone of
development and management of our
IaaS and IoT solutions. By automating
much of the process of provisioning
and scaling resources, we are freeing
our employees to focus more on
innovation—an essential ingredient
for success.”
