This talk is a followup to Deploying systemd at scale that was presented at systemd.conf 2016, and covers the aftermath of the migration of our fleet to CentOS 7. Now that systemd is available everywhere, we found more and more services that started adopting it for their deployment, leveraging its features and occasionally exposing interesting behaviors. At the same time, we've been able to hone our process for integrating and rolling out new versions of systemd on the fleet, and started building tooling to manage and monitor it at scale.

Your Linux AMI: Optimization and Performance (CPN302) | AWS re:Invent 2013Amazon Web Services
Your AMI is one of the core foundations for running applications and services effectively on Amazon EC2. In this session, you'll learn how to optimize your AMI, including how you can measure and diagnose system performance and tune parameters for improved CPU and network performance. We'll cover application-specific examples from Netflix on how optimized AMIs can lead to improved performance.
Preparing Codes for Intel Knights Landing (KNL)AllineaSoftware
Getting ready for the next generation of Intel Xeon Phi processors: we outline the steps to tune, profile and then optimize applications to target many core
Using Apache Spark to analyze large datasets in the cloud presents a range of challenges. Different stages of your pipeline may be constrained by CPU, memory, disk and/or network IO. But what if all those stages have to run on the same cluster? In the cloud, you have limited control over the hardware your cluster runs on.
You may have even less control over the size and format of your raw input files. Performance tuning is an iterative and experimental process. It’s frustrating with very large datasets: what worked great with 30 billion rows may not work at all with 400 billion rows. But with strategic optimizations and compromises, 50+ TiB datasets can be no big deal.
By using Spark UI and simple metrics, explore how to diagnose and remedy issues on jobs:
Sizing the cluster based on your dataset (shuffle partitions)
Ingestion challenges – well begun is half done (globbing S3, small files)
Managing memory (sorting GC – when to go parallel, when to go G1, when offheap can help you)
Shuffle (give a little to get a lot – configs for better out of box shuffle) – Spill (partitioning for the win)
Scheduling (FAIR vs FIFO, is there a difference for your pipeline?)
Caching and persistence (it’s the cost of doing business, so what are your options?)
Fault tolerance (blacklisting, speculation, task reaping)
Making the best of a bad deal (skew joins, windowing, UDFs, very large query plans)
Writing to S3 (dealing with write partitions, HDFS and s3DistCp vs writing directly to S3)

Linux power management: are you doing it right?Chris Simmonds
Devices operating on battery power need effective power management: anything you can do to reduce power usage will increase battery life. Even for devices running on mains power, better power managements has benefits in reducing the need for cooling and lower energy costs. This presentation describes the four principles of power management: don't rush if you don't have to; don't be ashamed of being idle; turn off things you are not using; and sleep when there is nothing else to do. Each of these has a counterpart in the Linux kernel.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
