I, Robot Film Analysis
1. I, Robot
I, Robot was released in 2004 and directed by Alex Proyas. The genre of this film is Science
Fiction, Thriller, Film adaptation, Mystery and Action Film. In this power point I will be
writing about the analysis of the film opening I, Robot.
2. Mise en scene of I, Robot
the mise en scene of I, Robot opens is the car were the girl and man was
trapped in, the bed will smith woke up in and the water which it looked like
they where drowning in. The make up fits the genre âthrillerâ this is than to
give the audience what they want. The lighting and colour was dull and
dark it gave the scene a really depressed and scary atmosphere. The car
was positioned in the water this could indicate that theyâre dead, the
characters looked like they were restrained and theyâre facial expressions
looked like they were taking theyâre last breaths.
3. Cinematography
the type of photographic that was used in this trailer was a Paranormal and Underwater this was to get a
grainy and contrast look. The colour that was used in this trailer was really dull colours e.g. black, navy,
white etc. These colours are symbolic of sci-fi. The lens are at a Dutch angle because the camera is
slanted and through the trailer is tilted because the camera moves up and down and around on a
horizontal axis. The camera framing is at a medium shot because it shows characters sitting, close up is
also showed to capture emotions which at this point is that the characters are scared. The 18o degree rule
also contributes to this trailer because it shows character looking at each other sending each others
messages.
Editing
There is a lot of fade in and the images are darken to give effect. In this
trailer two shots were put together to show juxtaposition, there is a lot of
parallel editing to build tension. Transitions occurs at the end of the trailer
when everything ends and the scene starts at the bit when will smith wakes
up on the bed, this is transition because it changes its location.
4. Sound
The sound in the trailer is diegetic because it is visible on screen, the music in the trailer isn't
familiar but it an exotic music. The music's purpose in the trailer is to build tension because
the music's speed increase so its in line with the tension. Also there is direct address because
the characters are speaking to directly to the camera. Parallel sound also follows because it
complements the scene to the track and the scene the sound reflect each other.
Exposition of character
As you can see this image portrays danger to the audience
because of the way he woke up sweating. Also the way he
woke up made it seem that he has these dreams regularly
which could actually be important.
Furthermore as you can see In this picture you can analysis
the fact that the girl her looks really frighten this could
make the audience feel deeply sorry for her and give
sympathy.
5. Setting
In this picture the setting has been used with primary colours, this
has give an effect which also links to the genre, thriller. The
audience know when they see this that it wont be filler with
sunny and happy features .
In this picture the setting this picture has really gloomy
background which is blurred this is really good effect because it
gives the audience suspense.
Narrative
This trailer shows or hints out a lot of narrative because it
basically gives you the story line on what is going to
happen.
