Aging Latinos in Action - ALA
CCCIL is committed to developing the staff and community leadership necessary to ensure that our local aging Latino population can lead the most independent and healthy lives possible. CCCIL’s ALA initiative rests on the premise that a community rooted in a culture of independent living and health requires outreach, education, engagement, action and reflection.
ALA directly addresses CCCIL’s priority areas including 1) Developing an engaged constituency of community leaders with disabilities to act on local issues that will build and maintain a healthy, vibrant and independent community; and 2) Addressing the needs of the rapidly increasing aging population as it naturally increases in needs for disability services These two priorities are intimately interwoven as the cultural needs of specific populations including Latinos and aging adults pose unique opportunities and challenges as our nation re-invents how we look at access to care and health. The characteristics of program design and evaluationare intended to provide some level of recommended change or action as a result of the systematic investigation into a program’s effectiveness. Evaluation can provide answers to questions about a program that may be useful in adjusting a program to become more effective. Because evaluation results in insight about the effectiveness of a program for a specific population, evaluation can be used to implement social change or action. Evaluation findings may assist stakeholders (those who hold an interest) or decision makers in go/no-go decisions about specific program modifications or initiate the continuation or demise of the entire program. Introduction
In week 4, the lesson title is "Communication in Project Management" and we'll be addressing the following course outcomes:
CO #1: Apply leadership skills of project management as a nurse executive in an organizational setting to develop, implement, and evaluate successful project plans (PO 4,5)
CO #3: Exemplify professional values and scholarship that support the role of a student in a practicum setting (PO 4) (this is in reference to your time at your practicum site and you'll see this each week)
CO #5: Apply professional values characteristic of the competent and caring nurse executive that promotes holistic care principles and an appreciation of cultural humility (PO 1,3,4)
I encourage you to keep these course outcomes in mind while you read your text, articles, and lessons, as you participate in TDs, as you participate in practicum hours, and as you complete assignments.
Reading:
Your week 4 reading consists of three articles from peer reviewed journals. Two would be considered "scholarly" by Chamberlain definition as they are within five years old. The Culo article is from 2010 but it's a very good article so I decided to keep it. Please be sure to read these articles prior to constructing your initial TD post.
Lesson:
This week's lesson is about communication and building a communication plan. One point the lesson brings out is that, like most of the templates we are using, many organizations have their own formats or templates. I encourage you to reach out to the PM professionals in your organization and ask about this and compare our template to what you use in your organization. If your organization doesn't use a communication plan, it may be something you can suggest as a value added step.

I could not concur more with you on the importance of involving students directly and indirectly in the learning procedure and how it will facilitate teachers to assess the learner performance in their developmental phases. You noted that the teacher should focus on developing the learners’ capacity to perceive and appreciate things from different learning perspectives. I do agree with you, but how can we do that? I would like to know your opinion on this point.
Regarding to the memorization strategy of learning, memorization is one of the most difficult way for me to deal with. I could not memorize a lot and I can spend a night to memorize one passage. Till today, I could not find a way that makes me able to memorize more. It is really important that teachers and instructors understand that memorization for some students, like me, is very hard and sometimes impossible to memorize.

Meaningful learning occurs when learners are ready, and the materials are appropriate to the learners. If we don' t have any information about the learners, the materials we prepare for the learners might be useless. So I think knowing the readiness of the leaners is very important, and all the learners have different needs, that's why teaching learning strategies is very important. Even the leaners have exposed different learning and cognitive environment, they can choose a strategy we teach , which helps them experience meaningful learning.

You work in the administration of a major hospital. One of your tasks is the scheduling of one of the operating rooms in the hospital. The room is used for a specific elective surgery. You allocate a certain amount of time for a surgery; if the actual duration of the surgery exceeds the allocated time, the surgery scheduled next has to start later, and this usually results in overtime at the end of the day where surgery personnel have to stay late into the evening hours. If the actual duration of the surgery is less than the allocated time, the operating rooms remains idle until the next scheduled surgery, since the required resources for the surgery to start (staff, surgeon, equipment, patient) do not become available earlier.
You currently allocate 90 minutes for each surgery (from the beginning until the room is ready for the next patient). However, surgeons and personnel have voiced their opinion that they believe this is not enough time – too often do they run over, and too often do they have to stay late to resolve schedule overruns. The higher levels of the administration agree, since overtime work is generally associated with higher costs as well as possibly worse patient outcomes. You decide to manage this process more rigorously, and download data on 200 completed surgeries that contains information on the actual durations of the surgeries (beginning until the room is ready again), as well as some data on which surgery team was involved, and some patient specific data (Body Mass Index, or BMI of patient), see Surgery Data.xls.

: Your higher level managers in the hospital tell you that surgeries should finish within the allocated time 99% of all times. Calculate the amount of time you should allocate per surgery to make that happen. How much safety buffer is included in this number? (

: You try to understand the precise cost factors associated with allocating too much and too little time to a surgery. While opinions diverge, most of your colleagues tell you that a minute of being overtime is about 3 times as bad as a minute of finishing early. : One of the surgery teams (let’s leave it unspecified which one!) likes to schedule surgeries in continuous blocks. CCCIL’s ALA initiative rests on the premise that a community rooted in a culture of independent living and health requires outreach, education, engagement, action and reflection.

Hi everyone! You've now completed three weeks of NR631 (assuming that your literature review is done), and you are ready to move forward to week 4. I'll be grading your TD participation hopefully on Monday and then I'll work on your literature review assignments starting on Tuesday. This is a more extensive assignment and I have assignments due in other courses so it might take me a little longer to get your lit reviews back. I'm anticipating some excellent literature review on your great CGE topics 😎. Let's take a look at what lies ahead in week 4...
Introduction
In week 4, the lesson title is "Communication in Project Management" and we'll be addressing the following course outcomes:
CO #1: Apply leadership skills of project management as a nurse executive in an organizational setting to develop, implement, and evaluate successful project plans (PO 4,5)
CO #3: Exemplify professional values and scholarship that support the role of a student in a practicum setting (PO 4) (this is in reference to your time at your practicum site and you'll see this each week)
CO #5: Apply professional values characteristic of the competent and caring nurse executive that promotes holistic care principles and an appreciation of cultural humility (PO 1,3,4)
I encourage you to keep these course outcomes in mind while you read your text, articles, and lessons, as you participate in TDs, as you participate in practicum hours, and as you complete assignments.
Reading:
Your week 4 reading consists of three articles from peer reviewed journals. Two would be considered "scholarly" by Chamberlain definition as they are within five years old. The Culo article is from 2010 but it's a very good article so I decided to keep it. Please be sure to read these articles prior to constructing your initial TD post.
Lesson:
This week's lesson is about communication and building a communication plan. One point the lesson brings out is that, like most of the templates we are using, many organizations have their own formats or templates. I encourage you to reach out to the PM professionals in your organization and ask about this and compare our template to what you use in your organization. If your organization doesn't use a communication plan, it may be something you can suggest as a value added step.

I could not concur more with you on the importance of involving students directly and indirectly in the learning procedure and how it will facilitate teachers to assess the learner performance in their developmental phases. You noted that the teacher should focus on developing the learners’ capacity to perceive and appreciate things from different learning perspectives. I do agree with you, but how can we do that? I would like to know your opinion on this point.
Regarding to the memorization strategy of learning, memorization is one of the most difficult way for me to deal with. I could not memorize a lot and I can spend a night to memorize one passage. Till today, I could not find a way that makes me able to memorize more. It is really important that teachers and instructors understand that memorization for some students, like me, is very hard and sometimes impossible to memorize.

Meaningful learning occurs when learners are ready, and the materials are appropriate to the learners. If we don' t have any information about the learners, the materials we prepare for the learners might be useless. So I think knowing the readiness of the leaners is very important, and all the learners have different needs, that's why teaching learning strategies is very important. Even the leaners have exposed different learning and cognitive environment, they can choose a strategy we teach , which helps them experience meaningful learning.

John Rommel was born in 1955 to a lower class family in New York. His father had immigrated over to the United States from Germany prior to the rise of Hitler in 1933. He desired to show pride in his new country, so he worked hard at the docks to earn a living for his family. While he was never made much, he always stressed pride in his work and obeyed the law. He believed this was a firm foundation for becoming successful.
John always showed a bright mind and highly intuitive nature, but he never showed any desire for schooling. He saw society as an unfair, unforgiving system that repressed those of lower social status. John was not a violent person; he considered himself very honorable, but he did not have a desire to work like his father did, earning low wages for hours of tedious work to support his family. Instead, he opted for more illegal endeavors—gambling, stealing, and even dabbling in organized crime. However, he never told his father because he did not want to disrespect his family. When he turned 17, he became a drug-runner for the Gambino family because a couple of his close “brothers” had become involved in the business as well.
Soon John became involved with more than just drug running; he began to assist the family with offering “protective services” to different shops and businesses in Brooklyn’s lower east side. Develop a Community Agency Observation project that would be of approximately ten hours duration in total at a community organization in your town or city. The community agency observation projects can be individualized and must be approved by the instructor. For example, you could observe international agencies or churches in your community that have English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. Make sure that you choose an organization where you will be able to: Assess the multicultural organizational development of the institution. Summarize a few critical incidents during which multicultural aspects were addressed (directly and indirectly). Examine the influence of diversity on human services delivery issues, such as problem identification, symptom expression, and help-seeking behavior. Analyze how those critical incidents affected your cultural self- awareness and professional relationship, specific to the provision of culturally competent services.
