Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones, resulting in a slow metabolism. Some common causes include Hashimoto's disease, surgical or radiation treatment of the thyroid, and certain medications. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, joint and muscle pain, constipation, dry skin, slowed heart rate, and depression. It is diagnosed based on elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and low free thyroxine (T4) levels. Treatment involves replacing the missing thyroid hormones with levothyroxine medication.
