Christians launched the First Crusade in 1095 to retake control of the holy land and middle east from Muslim rule. Pope Urban II called on Christians to drive the Turks out of Anatolia and recover Jerusalem, which was under Muslim control. The First Crusade was part of a larger counterattack by western Christians against the Turks and other Muslims for dominance in the region.
