The 1st Crusade began in the late 11th century to help free Jerusalem from Muslim rule. Christians fought against Muslims in areas including Anatolia, the Levant, and Palestine. The crusade ended in 1099 when Christian forces captured Jerusalem, though it failed to significantly impact Western Europe. Subsequent crusades also fought the same opponents in the region.
