• Since 1991, Suzanne has been
  writing for children’s
  television.

• While working on Kids WB,
  she met an author who
  convinced her to start writing
  books.

• She first wrote The Underland
  Chronicles, a five-part
  war/fantasy series. Then she
  wrote The Hunger Games
  trilogy. (“Biography” 2011)
PANEM
• The Hunger Games takes place in the nation of
  Panem, which are the ruins of what once was
  North America.

• Pamen is made up of a Capitol surrounded by
  twelve districts.
DISTRICT TWELVE
• Katniss’, Peeta’s, and Gale’s home

• Produces coal

• Poorest, most starving district

• “District 12. Where you can starve to death in
  comfort.” – Katniess, pg. 6
THE CAPITAL
• Flashy, rich, shallow

• Strange fashion – painted skin, rainbow hair

• Obsessed with entertainment

REALITY TV

THE GAMES
• Each year, the capital selects one boy and one girl
  from each of the twelve districts to participate in
  the Hunger Games.
• “Tributes” – ages 12-18

• The games consist of all the tributes being placed
  in an arena and fighting to the death.

• The last tribute standing wins!
KATNISS
• The sixteen year-old heroine of the story.

• She resides with her mother and sister, Prim,
  in District 12 of Panem.

• She volunteers to be the female tribute for
  District 12 in the Hunger Games in place of
  her sister.
GALE
• Katniss’s best friend.

• He and Katniss often leave the district to hunt.
  Since both of their fathers have died, this is
  how they provide for their families.

• He is secretly in love with Katniss.
PEETA
• The male tribute from District 12 in the
  Games.

• Peeta’s family own a bakery in District 12, and
  he loves to bake.

• He is in love with Katniss.
RUE
• Rue is the female tribute from District 11, the
  agriculture district.

• Rue is the youngest tribute in the Hunger
  Games.

• Rue and Katniss form an alliance in the games
  in hope that they will both survive longer.
