- 3. THESIS Every day there is someone out in the world who hasn’t had a meal in days, someone who doesn’t have any food. And every day there are people who have a meal and more with out a thought in all the people around the world who are not as fortunate. Now with the way the economy has been headed, more and more people are headed towards empty bowls. Hunger is spread worldwide and I want to bring attention to it because it is often over looked. People who are well off often don’t realize how good they have it and how many people are dying to have that last slice of bread thrown into the trash after dinner. It is a growing problem that deserves proper attention.

Editor's Notes
- What I wanted to get out of my project was to raise awareness. With the way our economy has been directed lately more and more people are going with out food and it&#x2019;s too often over looked. Many of us can sit down at dinner and only eat half of our dinner and throw the other half out with out having to worry about whether or not there will be a meal the next day.
- This is my personal relevance but I prefer to call it my inspiration because of how inspiring Mrs. Burns was to me. When we were first assigned the SGP I wasn&#x2019;t really sure what I was going to do. When we started making bowls on the wheel in my ceramics class, we were making the bowls to be sold as part of a fund raiser for the Upper Merion Emergency Aid. Mrs. Burns started this project out by reading us an article out of a magazine about a school who was making ceramic bowls to raise money for the Empty Bowls project which we will talk about later. This all kind of brought me to this project. I saw how dedicated she was to it and I saw it as an opportunity to learn about something I really had no idea about.

- That is 25,000 people and more than 10,000 children.
- I had read that the fraction of well fed people in the world is 1/3. Sounds like a significant amount right? Well it just so happens that 1/3 is under fed and that last 1/3 represents the ones that are starving. Did you know that hunger and malnutrition alone kill more people than the combination of malaria, AIDS, and T.B. But the worst part about these deaths, is the pain that the these people go through. The slow, almost torture of starvation. It&#x2019;s estimated that there is 800 million people in the world that is suffering of hunger and malnutrition.
- Hunger in America as of right now is at 37 million. What&#x2019;s worse is that households with children is recorded to have twice the food insecurity than those with out children.
- The numbers are rising and the need for aid is higher on demand. In 2008 4.8 U.S. households were seeking aid for emergency food. It is a 40 % increase since 2006 and is expected to continue to rise.
- This is a photo that was taken in 1994 in Southern Sudan. Photographer Kevin Carter found this young girl crawling towards a United Nations Food Camp. If you take notice to the upper left of the girl, a vulture sits waiting for 20 minutes. As you can assume the vulture was waiting for this young girl to die. Normally when all of you think of hunger you think of this. You pretty much think about poverty, most think about the homeless and far away third world countries. - Hunger/ malnutrition is aquired in different ways.
- but hunger is more than just that. It is also the working poor. The working poor is the people who have jobs but do not make enough to support themselves or there family. These are normally the people who will spend 60% of there income on buying food. Some times these people even have to travel far distances just to get to work. Families are faced with hard decisions of whether to pay the bills or to buy groceries. There&#x2019;s a foundation called The Working Poor Families Project, it&#x2019;s funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Ford Foundation and the Joyce Foundation. The aim of this project is to help families find jobs and provide them with skills to move up in the work force so they are able to support themselves.
- What causes people to go hungry and cause people to be at risk of becoming hungry.
- Natural disasters cause major destruction and with devastating results. As we all know, Haiti was never known as a rich place and has also had an issue with providing an adequate amount of food for all of it&#x2019;s citizens. Now that the earthquake has happened, I&#x2019;m sure you can imagine it has created many problems for the haitian people. I read an article about the haitian and the troubles haiti is going through. It talked about this 10 year old boy named maxi that is carrying a plate of beans and takes only one for himself. He knows that he has to conserve the food because it&#x2019;s also for his family of 6. This is the kind of struggle that many of the families go through because of the earthquake. Haiti&#x2019;s commercial food supply was destructed along with supermarkets and bakery&#x2019;s now covered in rubble and dirt. Now that it&#x2019;s own local food is hard to get and the supply of aid has been going down you should see that it&#x2019;s only harder for the citizens to nourish themselves.
- A drought is a shortage of water or rain. A drought can due high damage to crops. With out rain the crops do not get natural water. Back in February the Philippines suffered a loss of millions of dollars worth of crops due to the drought they were having. The Philippines is not a rich country and relies on many of it&#x2019;s exports. With that, it is also the worlds largest importer of rice. If the country cannot export for money, this means the country cannot import as much as they need to. With that shortage, means cutting back on using water. Which adds even more to the nutritional deficiencies of the hungry. That&#x2019;s a picture of a farmer from the Philippines across what is now his farm land.
- Famine is an extreme lack of food. It&#x2019;s normally caused because of climate change, whether it be a drought or a natural disaster. This term is used most commonly tacked onto a huger population of a specific area than just one person. It&#x2019;s common in more poor countries. I&#x2019;m going to again cite Haiti on this one. Now that food is more scarce and high on demand the prices have risen about 40 percent in less than a year.
- The Poverty Line in the U.S. is represented by how a household may or may not struggle to meet it&#x2019;s basic needs. The poverty line actually parallels with the amount of households in food insecurity. If you take a look at the graph here, in the zero to one range you clearly see that the percentage of food insecurity is high compared to having a higher income. When you take a look at third world countries it&#x2019;s plane to see that they are in poverty and a lot of the time have inefficient agricultural practices and normally do not have the means to learn proper practices as well as not being able to buy food to feed themselves.
- Households with disabled members have a need for a substantial income so they can meet nutritional needs. It&#x2019;s often hard for these households because of medical bills. So many time its a decision to pay the bills and get the medical help needed or eat.
- Which brings me to what I call special cases. There wasn&#x2019;t really a name I could give it. You&#x2019;ll understand what I mean once I tell you the two ladies stories you see here. The lady you see at the top is Monica. I found her story on the feeding america website. As you can imagine being a single mom raising four teenage kids can be a challenge. It can be an even bigger challenge when you live in a bad area. Monica moved her family from San Bernardino in New Mexico to Rio Rancho. A bold move to keep her kids safe she is now jobless. She once was a pharmacy technician but after her relocation she has been unable to find a new pharmacy. Along with her move she also faced the task of paying for school uniforms after enrolling her kids into public schools. And the list only goes on from there. Now Monica turns to a local Food bank to feed her family through this hard time. Right bellow her is Adriana. A college educated woman living in New York City has been jobless for three years due to a relocation of the company she was working for to Connecticut. she struggle to support herself and her 83 year old mother. While searching for a job similar to the last she works odd jobs in the mean time to get by. - Each Year since 1995 the USDA uses survey&#x2019;s to asses the food security of households. The Survey consists of questions about conditions, behaviors and experiences related to household food access along with the severity of that food access as well as worrying if households food supply will run out or even to going with out eating for a whole day. With the survey the USDA ranks the households into four different categories based on the number of food insecure conditions reported. The first one is -High Food Security - These are the families that did not respond with &#x201C;yes&#x201D; to any food insecurity questions in the survey. -Marginal Food Security are the households that answered yes to at least one to two of the questions of food insecurity -Low Food Security these are the families that have had to change the quality and quantity of food due to coping with a limited budget. -Very Low food Security families are the ones that have a high struggle with food. Meaning the family would have to cut back or skip meal on a regular basis.
- Now we&#x2019;re going to go over a few organizations that are in the fight to end world hunger. Also we&#x2019;ll talk about our largest organization for the hunger in the U.S. And then take a look at two of our local organizations. You can donate money on all of these websites as well as take time to look at the information provided to educate yourselves on what&#x2019;s going on.
- Action Against hunger which is stemmed from ACF (Action Contre la Faim) International which was founded in France in 1979. ACF International was created to campaign against poverty and poor public health. Although they did address hunger in there campaigns, Action Against Hunger was created to battle hunger worldwide. They provide for those under chronic food insecurity, emergency situations of conflict, and natural disaster. Now three decades in and operating in over 40 countries, Action Against Hunger is recognized as world leaders in the battle against hunger.
- The hunger site is an internet based store that sells products as well as educating the public. The money that is acquired from the sales is given to there partner organizations to provide food to hungry. World Food Day is a world wide event that takes place on October 16th. It was started to recognize the UN Food and Agricultural. Now running since 1981 and is sponsored by 450 national, private volunteer organizations. The goal is to increase, awareness, understanding, support advocacy, impact and information.
- Mercy Corps, an organization designed to improve poverty (which includes anti-hunger) oppression and suffering. Serving since 1979, they provide aid to 107 nations. It&#x2019;s a very educational website. They have blogs of people&#x2019;s stories and articles of what&#x2019;s going on in other countries. It talks about involvement and different reasoning for why people are in hunger.
- Bread for the world is a christian based organization. They urge leaders to help end hunger at home here in the U.S. and abroad as well. They write letters and meet with members of the congress to address the issue of hunger. In doing this they also encourage the general public to write to the congress to address the issue. They also take donations on the website.
- Empty Bowls started originally with a high school art teacher in Michigan with his students. The international organization is efforts to raise money and awareness for hunger. Started in a ceramics class, the students would create bowls and then would sell the bowls in the school with a bowl of soup and piece of bread.
- Feeding America, previously known as America&#x2019;s Second Harvest (changed in 2008). It&#x2019;s main goal is to direct attention to domestic hunger. Flying under the radar, it was decided that Feeding America conveyed the mission they are trying to succeed in. &#x201C;Feeding&#x201D; being a double meaning of providing food and enriching lives. The network is comprised of over 200 food banks, 63 thousand local charitable agencies, and 70 thousand programs that serve in all 50 states, as well as D.C. and Puerto Rico. They distribute 2.5 billion pounds of food and grocery products annually and now to 37 million American&#x2019;s facing hunger. Of those 37 million over 14 million are children and practically 3 million being seniors.
- Partner to Feeding America, Philabundance which originally started in 1984 as Delaware Valley&#x2019;s fight against hunger and food waste joined up with Philadelphia's Food Bank, turning it into our regions largest hunger relief organization. They basically do the same thing as Feeding America (serving to low income individuals at risk of hunger and malnutrition) but in our region only. Philabundance is also connected with neighborhood distribution programs, shelters, food cupboards, service agencies, and residential agencies.
- Food fighters which is what the people of the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger call themselves is intended for aid of those in the philadelphia area. The organization educates about hunger in the region. As well as educating, the money they raise goes into training and tools to help soup kitchens and food pantries keep up with the growing demand. Another goal of there&#x2019;s is to bridge the gap in the amount of people who are eligible for SNAP (food stamps) who are not receiving food stamps.

- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: This is our countries food stamp program. Money is provided on an electronic card used like an atm card. It is determined based on your household size, gross monthly pay, and net monthly pay. The net income is the amount of money the house hold is bringing in minus allowable deductions. Deductions are 20 percent taken off income, then deduction based on the number of people in the household, medical expenses, child payments to come up with your income.
- School Breakfast Program: The School Breakfast Program gives assistance in the form of cash to State so they can operate nonprofit breakfast programs in schools and childcare facilities. Started in 1966 and was finalized and made permanent in 1975. The Food and Nutrition Service administrates the program on the federal level while State education agencies operate through agreements with local school authorities. This program affects more than 87,000 schools.
- The Emergency Food Assistance Program:What they do is buy foods that they process and package to the states. The locations that are selected with in the states are local organizations that provide house holds or meals (food banks, kitchens, pantries shelters etc.). The amount of food that a state receives depends on the amount of low-income and unemployment persons represent there population. Sending food to households in specific is something they do as well but they must meet an income requirement. The requirement is set by federal, state, and welfare programs.
- Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004: (WIC, Child and Adult Care Food Program, National School Lunch Program, Summer Food Service Program, The Farm Bill) - Improves quality of food in schools - Lowers amount of required paper work - Provides more money to all these programs.
- Child and Adult Care Food Program: - Improves quality of child care for low income families and allows for a nutritious snack and meals as apart of there day at day care.
- Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for woman infants and children: WIC provides grants to States to distribute to low-income pregnant, breast feeding, and non breast feeding women, and to infants and children aged up to 5 years for food, health care and nutrition education.
- National School Lunch Program: The National School Lunch Program is a meal program for public and nonprofit private schools and child care institutions. It provides students in qualified schools with nutritional, low cost meals every school day. The program was sanctioned under the National School Lunch Act (1946). Eligibility is determined based on income and the aid you identify with already.
- - Allows and provides money to non profit organizations excluding schools to feed children all days of the year. This being because lower income families rely on school to feed there kids.
- Food Pantries which are basically the same thing as a food bank. People come in and either are provided with a bag of set food or can go into the facility to pick up items they specifically want (simulating an almost grocery store atmosphere but only with non perishable foods).Soup Kitchens provide meals. Often seen running out of churches there are also soup kitchens that are ran out side of the church.shelters are another great place to find aid for food. Often times shelters are attached with soup kitchens and food banks and pantries.One soup kitchen I found particularly interesting is one that is ran in Decatur, Georgia by a methodist church called Oak Grove. The reason it&#x2019;s so interesting is that it is a mobile food kitchen. It starts out as a shift on a tuesday afternoon that involves preparing, packing, and refrigerating sandwiches, fruits, a dessert and a drink. Once the next morning arrives, a second crew arrives with a mini bus to transport the food to Redeemer Lutheran Church in downtown Georgia by 10:30 to feed those less fortunate. This has been ran since 1991.
- Now, why is the question. Why is aid so important? Because with all the federal ran programs, with all the hunger relief organizations, with all the independently ran fund raisers and benefits, 37 million Americans are facing hunger. This is a 46 percent increase since 2006. Did you know that 40 percent of food in the US goes to waste. 40 percent! While people have to choose between paying for basic utilities or food, between a house over there head and groceries, many of us are wasting food with out care. 1 in 8 Americans receive emergency food aid. If you think 37 million is a huge number, think about the people who haven&#x2019;t been able to get aid because they&#x2019;re right at the line that doesn&#x2019;t qualify them for federal aid. Think about the 800 million people in the world who are suffering from food insecurity.
- Volunteer - Soup kitchens, food banks, salvation army, etc. Financial Donations - Make donations on anti hunger organizations websites. Send in checks Throw a benefit/ Fund Raise - Anything you can do. Reference my benefit and how I raised money that way. Food Drive - Hold a canned food drive at school. Philabundance has lists available on the website of items that are needed. Food Donation - Donate your own canned foods that you don&#x2019;t want anymore to food banks. Donate big left overs to food kitchens. Panera brings left over breads/pastries to food banks/ soup kitchens.
- - Empty Bowls Project was at the beginning of the school year. The ceramics classes made bowls on the wheel and glazed them up. On October 20th Mrs. Burns opened up to all three lunches down near the art room. The teachers would come down during there lunch and buy soup with a piece of bread. Along with that they got to choose from a bunch of beautiful bowls. She raised over 400 dollars and all of the money went to the Upper Merion Emergency Aid. To help out people in our community put food on there tables.
- Mrs. Burns - Ceramics...Mrs. Fox - Decorative Hand Crafts...Ms. Bishop - one of her cooking classes The giving tree was a collaboration between Mrs. Burns, Mrs. Fox, and Ms. Bishop. Mrs. Burns Teaches Ceramics, Mrs. Fox teaches decorative Hand Crafts and Ms. Bishop teaches cooking classes. They had all of there classes make ornaments as well as minora&#x2019;s credit to Mrs. Burns&#x2019;s advance ceramics classes. The ornaments were put onto the tree and sold through out the day near the front desk. All of the money made went towards our high school communities holiday meals. They made over 500 dollars for this one.
- For my application I raised money for Philabundance by holding a benefit. Brittany Stanish - Fashion Show Maryssa Smith - Baked goodies to sell. To get all this started Brittany and I had to figure out a location for the benefit. We couldn&#x2019;t have it just anywhere, Brittany needed the right location. So I contacted Detective Glauner. I had remember Mrs. Rieger saying something about him and using the King of Prussia Fire House. After I contacted him telling him my deal with the benefit, he went and had the fee for using the fire house waived. Once we had a location, I had to find us a mentor which Ms. Savini graciously committed to. Then I wanted to find a speaker from Philabundance. I thought this would be a nice additive to my application. I started emailing Eleanor C. Missimer who is the director of Annual giving for help. She forwarded my email to Shira Rosenwald who normally deal with this kind of thing. She actually found me a speaker but the day before I had gotten an email saying that Martha, the lady who was supposed to be speaking, that she had to go out of down for a family emergency. I really disappointed after that. I then had to come up with a speech in one night for the benefit the next day. I was really nervous being I felt I didn&#x2019;t have enough time but it worked out.
- We decided to lower the Price to $5 a ticket just to insure that people would show up. We also decided to have Maryssa&#x2019;s cup cakes be complimentary and have a Donation basket where we recieved alot of money from. We actually had a 20 dollar bill in there. We also did a raffle. When people came in they were offered to buy raffle tickets for a dollar each to win a custom made piece by Brittany. The night was a huge success. I was worried that people wouldn&#x2019;t show up but we had a good turn out. Ironically more guys than girls. We ended up raising over 300 that night.

- I think my presentation clearly shows that hunger is an issue and even though there is attention on it, there is still so many people with out the proper nutritional needs who can&#x2019;t afford to have a meal 3 times a day. Most of us throw away food when we&#x2019;re not hungry any more when there&#x2019;s people who have near to nothing. I want every one to walk away today with more of an appreciation for the food you have and how fortunate all of us are to be living healthy lives. As you saw not every one has it the way we do.
