Lift using projected coded light for finger tracking and device augmentation
We present Lift, a visible light-enabled finger
tracking and object localization technique that allows users to
perform freestyle multi-touch gestures on any object’s surface in
an everyday environment. By projecting encoded visible patterns
onto an object’s surface (e.g. paper, display, or table), and
localizing the user’s fingers with light sensors, Lift offers users a
richer interactive space than the device’s existing interfaces.
Additionally, everyday objects can be augmented by attaching
sensor units onto their surface to accept multi-touch gesture
input. We also present two applications as proof of concept.
Finally, results from our experiments indicate that Lift can
localize ten fingers simultaneously with an average accuracy of
1.7 millimeter and an average refresh rate of 84 Hz with 31
milliseconds delay on WiFi and 23 milliseconds delay on serial
communication, making gesture recognition on non-
instrumented objects possible.
Dual photography
This document describes the concept of dual photography, which uses Helmholtz reciprocity to interchange lights and cameras in a scene. This allows for logo detection that works on different sizes and orientations in real-time. The hybrid approach detects logos within 700ms for initial detection and around 50ms for subsequent frames, providing a processing rate of 20 frames per second. The goal is to port this algorithm to mobile platforms for real-time logo detection applications.

This document discusses single-pixel imaging via compressive sampling. It introduces compressive sampling which allows recovering a signal even if it is under-sampled by exploiting sparsity and incoherence. A single-pixel camera architecture is presented that uses a photo detector and modulated light sources to sample an image in a compressive manner, allowing reconstruction of the full image from far fewer samples than required by traditional pixel arrays. This technique could enable higher quality cameras at lower costs by needing just one photo detector instead of many.

Time-of-flight (ToF) sensors are one way to obtain depth information, and several time-of-flight sensors are available on the market.

3D reconstruction is a technique used in computer vision which has a wide range of applications in
areas like object recognition, city modelling, virtual reality, physical simulations, video games and
special effects. Previously, to perform a 3D reconstruction, specialized hardwares were required.
Such systems were often very expensive and was only available for industrial or research purpose.
With the rise of the availability of high-quality low cost 3D sensors, it is now possible to design
inexpensive complete 3D scanning systems. The objective of this work was to design an acquisition and
processing system that can perform 3D scanning and reconstruction of objects seamlessly. In addition,
the goal of this work also included making the 3D scanning process fully automated by building and
integrating a turntable alongside the software. This means the user can perform a full 3D scan only by
a press of a few buttons from our dedicated graphical user interface. Three main steps were followed
to go from acquisition of point clouds to the finished reconstructed 3D model. First, our system
acquires point cloud data of a person/object using inexpensive camera sensor. Second, align and
convert the acquired point cloud data into a watertight mesh of good quality. Third, export the
reconstructed model to a 3D printer to obtain a proper 3D print of the model.
Light Field Technology
These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to analyze how Light Field Technology is becoming economic feasible for an increasing number of applications. Light Field Cameras record all of the light fields in a picture instead of just one light field. This capability enables users to change the focus of pictures after they have been taken and to more easily record 3D data. These features are becoming economically feasible improvements because of rapid improvements in camera chips and micro-lens arrays (an example of micro-electronic mechanical systems, MEMS). These features offer alternative ways to do 3D sensing for automated vehicles and augmented reality and can enable faster data collection with telescopes.

This document describes a laser distance measurement system using a webcam. It consists of a laser transmitter and webcam receiver. The laser pulse is reflected off an object and received by the webcam. Software calculates the distance based on the time of flight. The system achieves high accuracy of ±3cm. It calibrates the system using test measurements to determine the relationship between pixel location of the laser dot and actual distance. This allows accurate distance measurements within a few percent of error out to over 2 meters. Potential improvements discussed are using a laser line instead of dot for more data points and a green laser for better visibility.

Morteza Biglari-Abhari, Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland, presents the “Person Re-Identification and Tracking at the Edge: Challenges and Techniques” tutorial at the May 2021 Embedded Vision Summit.
Numerous video analytics applications require understanding how people are moving through a space, including the ability to recognize when the same person has moved outside of the camera’s view and then back into the camera’s view, or when a person has passed from the view of one camera to the view of another. This capability is referred to as person re-identification and tracking. It’s an essential technique for applications such as surveillance for security, health and safety monitoring in healthcare and industrial facilities, intelligent transportation systems and smart cities. It can also assist in gathering business intelligence such as monitoring customer behavior in shopping environments. Person re-identification is challenging.
In this talk, Biglari-Abhari discusses the key challenges and current approaches for person re-identification and tracking, as well as his initial work on multi-camera systems and techniques to improve accuracy, especially fusing appearance and spatio-temporal models. Automatic Building detection for satellite Images using IGV and DSM
This document presents a method for automatic building detection from satellite images using internal gray variance (IGV) and digital surface model (DSM). The proposed method aims to detect low-rising buildings and buildings with partially bright and partially dark rooftops more accurately than existing methods. Jon Stern, Director of Optical Systems at GoPro, presents the “Building the Eyes of a Vision System: From Photons to Bits” tutorial at the May 2021 Embedded Vision Summit.
In this tutorial, Stern presents a guide to the multidisciplinary science of building the eyes of a vision system. CMOS image sensors have been instrumental in lowering the barrier for embedding vision into systems. Their high degree of integration allows photons to be converted into bits with minimal support circuitry. Simple protocols and interfaces mean that companies can design camera-based systems with comparatively little specialist expertise.
To produce high-quality output, the image sensor and optics must be carefully co-optimized to fit the application. To assist with component selection and help avoid common pitfalls, Stern describes the key parameters and provides a practical guide to selecting both sensor and optics for a camera. Numerous video analytics applications require understanding how people are moving through a space, including the ability to recognize when the same person has moved outside of the camera’s view and then back into the camera’s view, or when a person has passed from the view of one camera to the view of another. This capability is referred to as person re-identification and tracking. It’s an essential technique for applications such as surveillance for security, health and safety monitoring in healthcare and industrial facilities, intelligent transportation systems and smart cities. It can also assist in gathering business intelligence such as monitoring customer behavior in shopping environments. Person re-identification is challenging.
In this talk, Biglari-Abhari discusses the key challenges and current approaches for person re-identification and tracking, as well as his initial work on multi-camera systems and techniques to improve accuracy, especially fusing appearance and spatio-temporal models. Automatic Building detection for satellite Images using IGV and DSM
This document presents a method for automatic building detection from satellite images using internal gray variance (IGV) and digital surface model (DSM). The proposed method aims to detect low-rising buildings and buildings with partially bright and partially dark rooftops more accurately than existing methods. The key steps include image enhancement, IGV feature extraction, seed point detection using the enhanced image and IGV, clustering using DSM data, binarization, thinning, shadow detection, and segmentation. Results on test satellite images show the method achieves higher detection percentages and lower branch factors than an existing method.

Jon Stern, Director of Optical Systems at GoPro, presents the “Building the Eyes of a Vision System: From Photons to Bits” tutorial at the May 2021 Embedded Vision Summit.
In this tutorial, Stern presents a guide to the multidisciplinary science of building the eyes of a vision system. CMOS image sensors have been instrumental in lowering the barrier for embedding vision into systems. Their high degree of integration allows photons to be converted into bits with minimal support circuitry. Simple protocols and interfaces mean that companies can design camera-based systems with comparatively little specialist expertise.
To produce high-quality output, the image sensor and optics must be carefully co-optimized to fit the application. To assist with component selection and help avoid common pitfalls, Stern describes the key parameters and provides a practical guide to selecting both sensor and optics for a camera. He also provides an introduction to other hardware considerations and to correcting optical aberrations in the image processing pipeline.Temporal Contrast Vision Sensor

RFID localization uses RFID readers and tags along with localization algorithms like multilateration and Bayesian inference. Three demo cases were presented: 1) Indoor localization of a person using active RFID tags, 2) An indoor localization system using passive RFID tags to track robots, and 3) Using active RFID to locate customers in a restaurant to deliver orders. Challenges with RFID localization include limited battery life for active tags and short reading distances for passive tags.
