The adolescent identity, media, and sociocognitive schema (AIMSS) framework offers
a theoretical understanding of adolescent consumption and cognitive processing of
media entertainment. Review and integration of mass communication theory, develop-
mental theory, and ecological theory serves as the conceptual foundation. The frame-
work outlines linkages between media exposure and adolescent development, in par-
ticular adolescent identity formation and social competence. A key contribution of the
model is consideration of the positive and negative aspects of adolescent cognition and
behavioral functioning. The present article offers several recommendations for testing
the utility of the AIMSS framework.
Less than a century ago, G. Stanley Hall pub-
lished his seminal work, Adolescence (1904),
which popularized the idea of adolescence as a
time of storm and strife. Since then our under-
standing of adolescence has slowly progressed
beyond a narrow focus on reactive, transient be-
haviors of maturing children to the study of intri-
cate developmental processes. Along the way,
several researchers have provided major concep-
tual and practical insights into our understanding
of how cognitive, social, and biological develop-
ment contribute to the overall well-being of the
adolescent. Erikson (1968), Elkind (1990), Brooks-
Gunn (1988), and numerous others have proposed
exemplary theoretical models that examine the
salient biological, psychosocial, and cognitive
tasks faced by adolescents. The key to deepening
this understanding of adolescent development is to
synthesize existing exemplary frameworks so as
to create new, perhaps eclectic, conceptual mod-
els. These new models must incorporate relevant
historical frameworks while simultaneously pre-
senting new theoretical perspectives that address
the interaction of the multiple domains of human
development within a contemporary context. If
adolescent social functioning is to be addressed
adequately, a close examination of the current
zeitgeist in which these youths develop is
paramount.
In this millennium, adolescents develop in an
environment saturated with technology, multi-
culturalism, and mass media imagery. Current
theories of adolescent development address the
biological and psychological growth of these
youths, but a comprehensive model that incor-
porates the sociocultural specificity of the 21st
century has not been set forth. If there is to be
an in-depth and more accurate understanding of
adolescent behavior, researchers must account
for these cultural and technological changes
within a developmental context. This article
lays out such a conceptual framework. It en-
deavors to present adolescent social develop-
ment within the context of these multiple phe-
nomena by considering the impact on adoles-
cent development and its most salient.

world sociologically. Some things you want to look at need 20x80 strength binoculars
while you might see other things better with 8x40 or 10x30 lenses. It’s the same with
society. Some things need the lens of Conflict Theory, while others need a Structural
Functionalist or Symbolic Interactionist lenses. Some social phenomena can be viewed
using each of the three frameworks, although each will give you a slightly different view of
the topic under investigation.
Theories are sets of interrelated concepts and ideas that have been scientifically tested and
combined to magnify, enlarge, clarify, and expand our understanding of people, their
behaviors, and their societies. Without theories, science would be a futile exercise in
statistics. In the diagram below, you can see the process by which a theory leads
sociologists to perform a certain type of study with certain types of questions that can test
the assumptions of the theory. Once the study is administered, the findings and
generalizations can be considered to see if they support the theory. If they do, similar
studies will be performed to repeat and fine-tune the process. If the findings and
generalizations do not support the theory, the sociologist rethinks and revisits the
assumptions they made.
Here’s a real-life scientific example: In the 1960s, two researchers named Cumming and
Henry studied the processes of aging. They devised a theory on aging that had assumptions
built into it. These were, simply put, that all elderly people realize the inevitability of death
and begin to systematically disengage from their previous youthful roles while at the same
time society prepares to disengage from them.1 Cumming and Henry tested their theory on

Although related, stereotypes and prejudice are separate entities.
Prejudice
is holding negative feelings for a group of people, or even a particular person, and is often considered the “emotional component to intergroup attitudes” (Levy & Hughes, 2009, p. 24). As mentioned in the previous week,
stereotyping
is the “cognitive process of intergroup attitudes,” generally referring to associating attributes to a particular group (Levy & Hughes, 2009, p. 24). The presence of stereotypes or intergroup bias leads to prejudiced behavior in some instances. When prejudice behavior does occur, the individual’s emotional response often plays a role.

Purpose
This assignment is closely tied to specific course objectives. Two of the major primary course objectives of CST 100 are that students show respect for ethical codes that govern spoken discourse, such as tolerance for differences of opinion, preference for civility and that students will demonstrate increased understanding and appreciation of the communication process as it relates to speaker and listener interactions. By completing this assignment students will reflect on the things they learned and articulate important lasting lessons of public speaking.

CASE STUDY:
Working With Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Trauma: The Case of Brenna
Brenna is an 18-year-old, heterosexual, African American female. She is pregnant, residing in a homeless shelter, and has no income source. Brenna was raised by her biological mother in a one-bedroom apartment in an urban neighborhood. When Brenna was 15 years old, her mother began dating a new man. This man sexually assaulted Brenna while they were home alone one evening. She immediately disclosed the sexual assault to her mother who called her a liar and told her to move out. Brenna then lived in a variety of situations, sometimes residing with friends for short periods and sometimes living in a youth shelter. During this period she attended high school intermittently but did not graduate.
After her 18th birthday, Brenna moved in with her boyfriend, Cameron. Also living in the household were Cameron’s mother, his 16-year-old sister, and a 7-year-old brother. Shortly after moving in with Cameron, Brenna became pregnant with his child. Prior to the pregnancy, Cameron would often abuse her physically, verbally, and emotionally. When Brenna announced the pregnancy, Cameron became even more violent, accused her of sleeping with other men, and denied paternity of the baby. When Brenna was 4 months pregnant, Cameron attempted to strangle her, so Brenna moved to a shelter. Although the shelter was willing to house Brenna and her newborn temporarily, their policy required Brenna to secure new living arrangements prior to giving birth.
I was assigned to be Brenna’s social work case manager at this shelter. Brenna and I worked together to set manageable goals during her stay at the shelter and also developed a plan for ongoing mental health support. Utilizing individual case manage- ment sessions, I worked with Brenna to prioritize goals regarding nancial stability, permanent housing, and medical care. Brenna had dif culty reading and writing, so we worked together to

CASE STUDY:
Working With Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Trauma: The Case of Brenna
Brenna is an 18-year-old, heterosexual, African American female. She is pregnant, residing in a homeless shelter, and has no income source. Brenna was raised by her biological mother in a one-bedroom apartment in an urban neighborhood. When Brenna was 15 years old, her mother began dating a new man. This man sexually assaulted Brenna while they were home alone one evening. She immediately disclosed the sexual assault to her mother who called her a liar and told her to move out. Brenna then lived in a variety of situations, sometimes residing with friends for short periods and sometimes living in a youth shelter. During this period she attended high school intermittently but did not graduate.
After her 18th birthday, Brenna moved in with her boyfriend, Cameron. Also living in the household were Cameron’s mother, his 16-year-old sister, and a 7-year-old brother. Shortly after moving in with Cameron, Brenna became pregnant with his child. Prior to the pregnancy, Cameron would often abuse her physically, verbally, and emotionally. When Brenna announced the pregnancy, Cameron became even more violent, accused her of sleeping with other men, and denied paternity of the baby. When Brenna was 4 months pregnant, Cameron attempted to strangle her, so Brenna moved to a shelter. Although the shelter was willing to house Brenna and her newborn temporarily, their policy required Brenna to secure new living arrangements prior to giving birth.
I was assigned to be Brenna’s social work case manager at this shelter. Brenna and I worked together to set manageable goals during her stay at the shelter and also developed a plan for ongoing mental health support. Utilizing individual case manage- ment sessions, I worked with Brenna to prioritize goals regarding nancial stability, permanent housing, and medical care. Brenna had dif culty reading and writing, so we worked together to

Income and wages are measurable indicators of how prosperity is distributed amongst social class. Wealth, often determined by an individual's net worth (assets minus liabilities), is another indicator that is used to determine class. Wealth for working class families is measured by their cars, savings, and home. As people improve their social and economic standing, wealth may include things like stocks and bonds, commercial real estate, and expensive jewelry.
Wealth is an important indicator because it spans past, present, and future generations. For example, compare the children of parents who can save money and leave an inheritance with children of parents who economically struggle and have few assets to pass on to the next generation. Historically, the creation and accumulation of wealth provides evidence of the legacy of racism, sexism, and discrimination and their role in determining class. Black/African Americans, women, and Hispanic/Latinos have historically been denied the means to obtain assets and grow wealth. Consider the impact of chronic marginalization on the Black/African American community's ability to build wealth. While the income gaps between various ethnic groups may be decreasing, the gap between assets remains wide. Data from the Pew Research center show that the median wealth of Caucasian households is 20 times that of Black/African American households and 18 times that of Hispanic/Latinos households in the U.S. (Pew Research Center, 2011).
Class extends beyond wealth and other financial indicators. Class also includes details like the amount of free time you enjoy (because you are not working three jobs to make ends meet) or feeling like there is a "right" way to speak and act in order to be heard. Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

To inform your thinking on this topic, begin by reading “Transmission of Aggressions through Imitation of Aggressive Models” (Bandura, Ross, & Ross, 1961), "”From Jerusalem to Jericho": A Study of Situational and Dispositional Variables in Helping Behavior” (Darley & Batson, 1973), “Bystander Intervention in Emergencies: Diffusion of Responsibility” (Darley & Latane, 1968), “The General Aggression Model: Theoretical Extensions to Violence, (DeWall, Anderson, & Bushman, 2011), "Group Inhibition of Bystander Intervention in Emergencies" (Latane & Darley, 1968), and “Understanding the Psychology of Bullying: Moving Toward a Social-Ecological Diathesis-Stress Model” (Swearer & Hymel, 2015). Then, imagine that you are an educator. Describe a hypothetical incident of observed antisocial behavior (bullying, relational aggression (i.e., “mean girls”), etc.). Interpret relevant social psychological theory and research to explain the case study you outlined, and assemble key insight from research on prosocial behavior to generate a plan for addressing this specific situation. Your initial post should be 500-1000 words in length and must contain at minimum required course resources as applicable. Additional credible references are encouraged.
