Half human half animal creatures have existed in mythologies around the world for thousands of years. Mermaids, with the upper bodies of humans and lower bodies of fish, appear in traditions from ancient Babylon to European folklore. Centaurs, with the upper bodies of humans and lower bodies of horses, were depicted in Greek literature and art both as wild beasts and teachers. The Garuda is a mythical bird-man creature worshipped in Hinduism and other Asian religions, depicted with a human body but the wings and face of an eagle.
