Hugo Grotius was a Dutch jurist and diplomat born in 1583 in Delft, Netherlands. He studied at Leiden University and began writing Latin elegies at a young age. In 1598, he accompanied a Dutch politician on an embassy to France. He later obtained a law degree from the University of Orléans and worked for the Dutch East India Company and Prince Maurice of Nassau. Some of his most important philosophical works included De Indis, Mare Liberum, and De Imperio Summarum Potestatum.
