This document provides an overview of HTML5 features including new HTML5 elements, offline capabilities through the App Cache, local storage options, multimedia additions like video and audio, cross-domain messaging, and the Canvas API. It discusses using these features across browsers through polyfills and shims, and emphasizes the importance of JavaScript knowledge for full HTML5 implementation. Web Sockets are introduced as enabling real-time two-way communication through a persistent connection.
Imagine for a while that Rails wouldn't exist. How would we write a MVC app from scratch?
Rack provides a minimal interface for developing web applications in Ruby. In fact it's the solid foundation of all major Ruby powered web frameworks.
During this talk we will dive deep into Rack. We will see the smallest possible Rack Application and learn how it works, by studying Rack internals. We will grow the Application step by step till we implement it in simple MVC style.
Cool like a Frontend Developer: Grunt, RequireJS, Bower and other ToolsRyan Weaver
Bower, Grunt, and RequireJS are just a few tools that have been re-shaping the frontend development world, replacing cluttered script tags and server-side build solutions with a sophisticated, but sometimes complex approach to dependency management and module loading. In this talk, we'll put on our trendy frontend developer hat and find out how these tools work and how they differ from what we might be used to. Most important, we'll see how using tools like this might look in Symfony2 and how our application can be a friendly place for a frontend guy/gal.

Asynchronous PHP and Real-time MessagingSteve Rhoades
With every major browser supporting WebSockets, HTML 5 has changed how we handle client to server communications. The high demand for real time client and server messaging has developers flocking away from PHP to languages such as Node.js. In this session we'll explore the libraries and extensions that make Asynchronous PHP possible and analyze the performance differences with Node.js. In addition we'll identify use cases and walk through examples of how Asynchronous PHP can handle everything from WebSockets and Message Queues to MySQL.

Abstract: Using out-of-the-box Puppet for non-sysadmin work - steps from going from no config management to managing 100 nodes and allowing non-sysadmin tasks to be performed.
Speaker Bio: Linux admin for 10+ years. Java/Python/C developer 12+ years. Ops engineer at http://www.serverdensity.com - a hosted server and website monitoring service. Currently processing 12TB+ per month into MongoDB running on dedicated and virtual instances.

Sprockets is an easy solution to managing large JavaScript codebases by letting you structure it, bundle it with related assets, and consolidate it as one single file, with pre-baked command-line tooling, CGI front and Rails plugin. It's a framework-agnostic open-source solution that makes for great serving performance while helping you structure and manage your codebase better.

Flash over the years, has been used to prop up the regular browser like a sad old man drinking alone in a pub.
Today browsers come shipped with technology designed to rival flash and aim to shut it squarely out of the game.
Are browser ready to rock without Flash?
HTML5 is all the rage with the cool kids, and although there’s a lot of focus on the new language, there’s plenty for web app developers with new JavaScript APIs both in the HTML5 spec and separated out as their own W3C specifications. This session will take you through demos and code and show off some of the outright crazy bleeding edge demos that are being produced today using the new JavaScript APIs. But it’s not all pie in the sky – plenty is useful today, some even in Internet Explorer!
We'll look at how the HTML5 and related specifications allow us to develop applications that can survive outside of the web. Browsers now offer us simple storage and more complicated SQL based storage and also full offline support which means we can build our apps to be self sufficient when the user is disconnected. This talk will take you through the technology and walk you though some practical code.
A walk through of the features of TwitterLib.js - a library that helps standardise all the Twitter API calls and all the data coming back from Twitter, and includes a collection of utility methods to speed development up.
A look at how HTML5 aims to plug the holes that Flash has been filling in browsers for the last decade, looking at both HTML5 and non-HTML5 JavaScript APIs.

jQuery is a JavaScript library which allows you to develop solutions with less code, in less time. You can build interactive prototypes for your prospective clients, or take an existing solution and add new dynamic behaviour with little effort.
We will see how jQuery can be used to quickly and concisely apply JavaScript behaviour to your web app. It will cover selectors, Ajax, DOM manipulation and more. The aim: to produce lean unobtrusive JavaScript with jQuery.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
LF Energy Webinar: Electrical Grid Modelling and Simulation Through PowSyBl -...DanBrown980551
Do you want to learn how to model and simulate an electrical network from scratch in under an hour?
Then welcome to this PowSyBl workshop, hosted by Rte, the French Transmission System Operator (TSO)!
During the webinar, you will discover the PowSyBl ecosystem as well as handle and study an electrical network through an interactive Python notebook.
PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
What you will learn during the webinar:
- For beginners: discover PowSyBl's functionalities through a quick general presentation and the notebook, without needing any expert coding skills;
- For advanced developers: master the skills to efficiently apply PowSyBl functionalities to your real-world scenarios.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
