WHAT IS HTML ?
HTML is a markup language for describing web documents (web
pages).
HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language
A markup language is a set of markup tags
HTML documents are described by HTML tags
Each HTML tag describes different document content
WHAT IS HYPER TEXT ?
 Hypertext is text which is not constrained to be linear. Hypertext is text which
contains links to other texts.The term was coined byTed Nelson around 1965.
 Hypermedia is a term used for hypertext which is not constrained to be text: it can
include graphics, video and sound , for example. Apparently Ted Nelson was the first to
use this term too.
 Hypertext and Hypermedia are concepts, not products.
WHAT IS MARKUP LANGUAGE ?
Markup languages are designed for the processing, definition and presentation
of text. The language specifies code for formatting, both the layout and style,
within a text file. The code used to specify the formatting are called tags. HTML
is a an example of a widely known and used markup language.
WHERE DO WE CAN CREATE HTML
DOCUMENT ?
 We can create html document by using any text editor.
 Some most commonly used text editor are
1 : Notepad (Windows)
2 : WordPad (Windows)
3 : SimpleText (Macintosh)
STRUCTURE OF HTML
An HTML document has two* main parts:
 Head: The head element contains title
and meta data of a web document.
 Body: The body element contains the
information that you want to display on a
web page.

IMAGE FORMAT USED IN HTML
There are three image format which are supported in html when you want to
insert image in html document.
Which are as follows :
 GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
 JPEG or JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
 PNG(Portable Network Graphics)
MEDIA FORMATS SUPPORTED BY THE

 Multimedia files are used to provide audio and video.
 Audio and video may be supplied in two ways :
> streaming
> non-streaming
 Non-streaming files must be downloaded in their entirety to the hard disk drive of the user’s machine
before playing.
 Streaming technology was developed to overcome the issue of download time.

 AVI – Audio-Video Interleaved (A standard format for computers)
 MOV – QuickTime Video (Format developed by Apple Computer that displays video ,audio and
animation on mac and windows)
 MIDI – Musical Instrument Digital Interface (Audio format used for synthesized music rather than
recordings . Files are smaller than WAV files.)
 MPG/MP3 – MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group) High quality compressed format for audio and
video
 WAV – Used for high quality recordings for both mono and stereo audio tracks . Creates relatively
large files.
