INTRODUCTION OF HRMINTRODUCTION
4.
5. From an Islamic perspective, managing human resource meets various challenges,
especially in modern organisations. The adoption of Western practices in various
aspects of management has caused the gaps in justice, trustworthiness,
responsibility and other values of workers in Muslim countries. The interference
of Islamic principles in human resource management (HRM) can be considered as
a great solution for treating employees fairly and justly. This paper discusses the
implementation of human resource management from an Islamic perspective of
the government-linked companies (GLCs) in Malaysia. HRM activities include
recruitment and selection, training and development, career development,
performance management and rewards. This study also discusses the relationship
between human resource management from an Islamic perspective and
organisational justice. This conceptual paper essentially provides organisations
with effective ways of understanding and implementing HRM by using Islamic
principles. It also can be used as a guidance for decision-making and day-to-day
human resource management activities and will help organisations to face
uncertainties in the business world as well.
HRM IN ISLAM
6. Islam advocates a recruitment system based on justice and equality (Ali, 2005;
Mellahi & Budhwar, 2010; Hashim, 2010; Osman et al., 2013).
In recruitment process, all candidates should be given equal chance and employers
should convey to candidates the job requirements and compensation. The
information thus disclosed will help potential employees in assessing their
suitability for the job. Allah (SWT) says:
“Allah doth command you to render back your Trusts to those to whom they are due; And when
ye judge between man and man, that ye judge with justice”(Quran: 4:58).
Applicants should be offered jobs as per their capabilities. At the same time,
applicants must provide accurate information about their qualifications. Allah
(SWT) says:
“And cover not Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth when ye know” (Quran: 2:42).
Such an exchange of information will allow both parties to look after their future
interests.
Ali (2010) quoted Prophet (PBUH) saying:
RECRUITMENT IN ISLAM
7. In Islam selection is based on the principles of justice, competency, honesty, and
assigning work as per employees’ capacity (Ali, 2005; Ahmad, 2007; Hashim, 2010;
Osman et al., 2013). Employees should be selected based on their competency—
knowledge and skills, not on blood relationship, friendship, wealth, age, race, and
political power or the like. Ali (2010) identified five criteriafor selection, which
include competency, experience, shouldering responsibility, organizational fit, and
reputation within community. Islam recommends a fair selection system that is
free of biases (Khan et al., 2010).
Allah’s messenger (PBUH) admonishes leaders of violating the command of Allah
and His Messenger by appointing incompetent people for a job. Omar Ibn
Khattab, the second caliph, said that person cheats Allah (SWT), Prophet (PBUH),
and the community if he/she deliberately selects an inappropriate person based
on prejudice and personal relationship (Ali, 2010). Ali Ibn Abi Talib, the fourth
caliph, said that the selection based on favoritism or egoism is equivalent to
injustice and treachery (Syed Agil, 1997).
SELECTION IN ISLAM
8. Islam proposes training and development to improve the knowledge, skills and
attitude of workers at all levels (Ali, 2005; Ahmad, 2007; Hashim, 2010;
Osman et al., 2013). Allah (SWT) elevated human beings to status of
vicegerents on earth because of knowledge and among human beings
accorded higher status to the knowledgeable people.
“Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know? It is those who are endued
with understanding that receive admonition” (Quran: 39:9).
Similarly, caliphs Omar and Ali emphasized the importance of training and
development and adopted the concepts of probationary appointment and
apprenticeship in recruitment process (Ali, 2010).
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

10. A Review: During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him),
Muslims found themselves cast out of civilization and forced to seek shelter in a
mountain hideout near Makkah. Thus far, their only opposition had been from
men, but now they found themselves unsupported by nature too. They survived
harsh conditions for three years, using all their skill, might, and willpower to
survive.
Khadijah, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad, was someone who had tasted
immense luxury and comfort. Yet when faced with this extremely trying
circumstance, not only did she adapt gracefully but she used her wealth to provide
what she could for her fellow Muslims.
The people either lived in hunger or satisfied themselves and their children with
leaves and the bark of trees. They withstood the harsh desert conditions
throughout the entire period. When it was over, they were still Muslims – holding
firm to their beliefs.
MOTIVATION IN ISLAMIC

12. Compensation Management in ISAround the world Muslims are rediscovering
Islam; consequently there is a growing demand of practicing Muslims for
compensation from Islamic perspective. But lack of adequate Islamic
guidelines regarding compensation system is one of the key constraints to the
way of ensuring employee compensation from Islamic point of view. So this
study is an attempt to minimize the gap found therein. In this study a
framework for determining and ensuring employee wages and compensation
system has been developed in the light of Islamic principles. If the
compensation system is managed from Islamic perspective both employees
and employers will not only gain conducive, congenial and productive working
environment in this world but also can expect for getting salvation in the
hereafter.
COMPENSATION MANAGEMENT
FROM ISLAMIC
13.
14. First and foremost, Islam views work or `amal as an act of worship (`ibada)
similar to prayer and fasting through which an individual can attain the pleasure of
God. To underscore this, the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s everlasting peace
and blessings be upon him) once shook the hand of a man whose hands were very
course and full of blisters. On finding out that the reason for the rough condition
of the man’s hands was because of his hard manual work, the Prophet (pbuh)
kissed the hands of the labourer. He prayed for him and spoke very highly of
those who labour over against those who sit idle or go begging.
The illustrious companions of the Prophet (pbuh) imbibed this comprehensive
concept of `ibada (worship) which extolled labour and hard work. Once the
second khalipha after the demise of the Prophet, `Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah
be pleased with him), witnessed a group of believers who were dedicating
themselves solely to performing prayers (salah) and seclusion in the masjid
(`ìtikaf). He inquired about them and was informed that because of their exclusive
devotion to prayers they had earned the title of al- mutawakkilun (those who
placed their trust in God to provide for them).
LABOUR RELATION IN ISLAM
15.
16. Islam has a set of basic rules and regulations for employer and
employee to run their affairs. Prophet Mohammad (Peace be
upon him) practiced and also taught these people during his
time. He founded a society where employer and employee
enjoyed benefits of these basic rules. 1400 after years from his
death, these basic rules still exists as milestone not only in Muslim
nation but also adopted by many other nations and
organizations.
Islamic rules and regulations for employer and employee falls in
four category.
Common rules and regulations for both employer and employee
. Specific rules and regulations for employer
3. Specific rules and regulations for employee
