The Dust Bowl, battering the Midwest for nearly a decade with high winds, bad farming
techniques, and drought, became a pivotal point in American history. The wind storm that seemed
relentless beginning in the early 1930 s until its spell ended in 1939, affected the lives of tens of
thousands of Americans and the broader agricultureindustry. The catastrophic effects of the Dust

We can only imagine how hard it must be to be a young child during the time of war. Not only
did they have to deal with all of the fighting going on around them, but there was nothing they
could do about it. They could not help fight because they were too young, and they could not

thought out. The Outsiders is a book about a boy who is a gang and have lost his parents. The
gang is a part of the Greasers, the poor kids, who are always attacked by the Socs., the rich kids.
One day Ponyboy and Johnny are attacked and Johnny kills one. They run away where they save
kids from a burning church. They get burns and are rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile Ponyboy
and Greasers are having a rumble with the Socs. After the rumble Johnny dies in the hospital and
Dally is killed by police because he wanted to die. The Wednesday Wars is about a 7th grader

because of it sounds, which showed me how sad he is We, we who were, we are the same no
longer. (22) The wee sound is just showing how lost and sad he is. More over, he is not sure
about something in his deep feelings. Or I shall say he is sure but contradicting himself when he
says I no longer love her, true, perhaps I love her. (27) The best line in this poem, in my opinion,
that represents personification,

Again, the virtue itself is not exactly being praised so much as being alluded to as a component of
something good.
The women also had their say. In Katherine Phillips s A Married State (1679), the many
advantages of a life of chastity are listed. Phillips says A virgin s state is crowned with much
content; / It s always happy as it s innocent. In addition to innocence, Phillips points out that there
are no grouchy husbands, no screaming children and nothing else to distract you from your
service to God. In fact, wistful women wishing they d kept their virginity and wedding vows to
themselves wrote many poems in this era. It is a telling social commentary that so many married
women would wish themselves back to live a life of chaste penitence than to enter into so called
wedded bliss.
The most common theme in virginity poems is that of men trying to get women to change their
minds and go to bed with them. Many poets tried to use persuasion on their objects of desire. In
Robert Herrick s To the Virgins to Make Much of Time, the well known first line Gather ye
rosebuds while ye may appears. This poem is an appeal to virtuous women to use it while they ve
got it, per se. In the proud tradition of soldiers who will be sent off tomorrow who just know they
aren t coming back and hedonists everywhere, Herrick emphasizes that time is short and virgins are
wasting their youths
