How To Write A Dialectical Journal For Enduring Love
Journal 1 Mrs. Dashwood is noticeably conflicted about leaving the family home, Norland. On one
hand, "she was impatient to be gone," even though "to remove far from that beloved spot was
impossible" (Ch. 3 pg. 12). Clearly it is a struggle to relive the grief of losing her husband in the
house where they spent their life together, but at the same time it is very difficult to leave the only
house that her and her daughters have ever called home. This inner turmoil reveals that the sense of
home can be both loved and hated. When it comes time for them to finally leave the house, "Many
tears were shed by them in their last adieus to a place so much beloved." (Ch. 5 pg. 25) The middle
daughter, Marianne, says, "When shall I cease to regret you! –When learn to feel a home
elsewhere!" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Willoughby and Marianne sparks an interesting relationship. Marianne is enthralled with the
charming, handsome, and intelligent man who carried her down the hill in the rain. "His manly
beauty and more than common gracefulness were instantly the theme of general of admiration." (Ch.
9 pg. 40) Marianne already the constant romantic, finds him to be everything she could hope for.
"His person and air were equal to what her fancy had ever drawn for the hero of her favorite story."
(Ch. 9 pg. 41) It is at this point in the novel when the reader begins to realize the meaning behind
the title Sense and Sensibility. The two protagonists, Elinor and Marianne, represent sense and
sensibility. Elinor's personality and relationship with Edward is certainly sensible, while Marianne is
more emotional and passionate, as reflected by her budding relationship with Mr. Willoughby. Every
once and a while there is a clash between "sense and sensibility" through the two sisters. As the
novel progresses perhaps Austen will reveal whether reason can influence emotion, vice versa, or if
they both influence each other throughout the sister's

A Comparison and Contrast Between the Two Poems, Poetry...
"I, too, dislike it: There are things that are important beyond all this fiddle." Poetry has been around
for a long time. As the years go by poetry adapts to the time period. However, the authors have
different views. Majority of them will read and enjoy all types of poem, but they have their own
opinions. The new, has to be truly unique to the author and to the time period. Shakespeare still had
plays that we study, but it is hard to comprehend the message behind the words. Worlds change and
the literature's change with the trends. The important question is how it should change. During each
time period there are people that publish their opinions, but different people have different ideas.

Today the only time we read Homer is when we are forced to in school. Once we have read it and it
is explained, then we understand. We can't understand things that don't pertain to the time period.
The poetry has to be something straight forward and understandable. "The poem was suffused with a
calm curiosity that seemed to know it wouldn't get anywhere faster by being overeager. (Osborn)
Being straightforward is the way people understand things. It has to be forward and simple. The
simplicity can touch people as much as the complex .Poetry is of the mind and has to continue to
change with the time. Change keeps it modern. Modern talks about how poems have to genuine or
about something useful. Poetry has to be about what is real and no the imaginary ideas that feel the
books. A simple thing can be lead to idea or to a meaning beyond the object, but it needs the simple
object. Poets have to start to rely on objects such as items, but also events. Things that happen in a
life can be just as valuable as a material object. "' Moore's poetry does not invite biographical
interpretation', Leavell mines the early poems for references to events in the poet's life and evidence
of 'profound feelings' that Moore herself revealed to no one." (Rye) Events are a good to draw on. It
shows what lead up to the opinions of the author. However, the one thing she never tried was to

Mid-Day By Marianne Moore Analysis
Two Different Views of Modernist Feminism Throughout the Modernist period in American
literature history, many brilliant authors expressed their thoughts and feelings through their works.
Two of the authors we observed in class that I found to be the most interesting were Hilda Doolittle
(H.D.) and Marianne Moore. These two poets had many similar modernist ideas that they expressed
in their works. They are both admired for abolishing some of the feminine traits of writing poetry
during this era, ad proving that women were just as equal as men. Overall, there work helped shape
poetry in the modernist period. First, H.D.'s "Mid–day" poem is a great example of how since she
was a female, she struggled to get published. The poem expresses a great ... Show more content on

Doolittle was more soft spoken and expressed it a somber manner, while not offering many solutions
to the ethical dilemma she faced. Moore, on the other hand, was more aggressive and wanted people
to know women work just as hard as men and should be recognized in a higher regard for it. While
Moore often speaks her mind she still manages to give off a calm demeanor, only expressing that
women are simply doing what they are supposed to just like men. She implies in her work that
women should not seek anything extra for doing their duties as women, but only the same amount of
respect that men get for doing their basic duties. These two poets, along with many others helped
shaped the Modernist period, something that is often overlooked. During this time period there was
a lot of distress about the changing of morals and attitudes of people. These poets, and those alike
were able to spread some influence, and helped shape modern day

Dashwood Vs Elinor
In the novel, Sense and Sensibility, by Jane Austen and the article, Impulse and Virtue in Jane
Austen: Sense and Sensibility in Two Centuries, by Edward Joseph Shoben Jr. the contrasting roles
of sisters in the nineteenth century are demonstrated as they face their roles in society. The sisters,
Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, differ in many ways, especially in the way they feel and are
effected by their respective emotions and in their response to societal norms. Elinor demonstrates
"sense" through her adherence of societal norms whereas Marianne exemplifies "sensibility",
expressing her emotions to their fullest extent.
A major way in which Elinor and Marianne Dashwood's personalities differ is in the way they deal
with emotion. Every aspect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"For Marianne, morality is an inherent quality of selfhood rather than a process of judgement based
on social rules. Confronted by a world in which pettiness and egotism appear virtually universally,
she rebels by setting the authenticity of her own impulses above the authority of society" (Shoben
532). Marianne celebrates her admiration and love for Willoughby; she gives him a lock of her hair
without being engaged to him which was unheard of during these times. She also recognizes their
relationship, against the norms of society, when she arrives in London. Marianne writes Willoughby
several letters in the hopes of seeing him once again. Her extremely public relationship with the
mysterious Willoughby caused others to "doubt sometimes ... of their being really engaged, and this
doubt was enough to prevent her [Elinor] making any inquiry of Marianne" (Austen 66). The odd
context of the relationship frequently causes Marianne's mother and sister to worry for her
candidness. The two hope and expect an engagement to be announced several times during the
beginning of the novel. Marianne also demonstrates her rebellion against social norms in regard to
Colonel Brandon. Rather than being charmed by the idea of the eligible bachelor having feelings for
her, she is disgraced. She shares with her family her belief that the Colonel is too old to even be able

Summary Of Katie Hammil's Sense And Sensibility
Katie Hammil's play "Sense and Sensibility," adapted from Jane Austen's novel of the same name, is
about reservedness and openness and how both behaviors can cause misunderstanding, but
ultimately result in the same outcome, which is revealed through the play's characterization of the
two Dashwood sisters, and the conflict between them, which is all highlighted by the lighting and
costume design as well as the acting in the Playmakers Repertory Company production. Elinor
Dashwood (Shanelle Nichole Leonard) and her sister Marianne Dashwood (Emily Bosco) are two
people of very different temperaments. Elinor is characterized as reserved, and she works to restrain
her emotions for the sake of decorum and because she believes it is unseemly. "I WILL be mistress
of myself," she exclaims as Edward Ferrars (Rishan Dhamija) appears at the end of the play, in the
scene "Edward is Married" (106). Marianne, on the other hand, is a lot more open about her
emotions, and is characterized as a more lively and sensitive young woman. Elinor's personality
causes her to bottle up her feelings toward Edward, making her extremely unhappy, while
Marianne's willingness to love Willoughby (Geoffrey Culbertson) results in him taking advantage of
her. The sisters's differences causes conflict between them, as they cannot understand why the other
acts as she does. Elinor desperately wishes her sister would be more composed, while Marianne
wishes Elinor would be more uninhibited. This often leaves them at odds with one another, as seen
in the end of the scene "Brandon's Letter." Ultimately, however, both sisters are able to find romance
and a happy ending, and can finally begin to learn from their mistakes and accept each other for how
they are. Both young women's temperaments are reflected in their costumes, designed by Olivera
Gajic. Throughout the entirety of the play, Elinor wears a dress of light blue, a color that implies ice
and coldness, which mirrors her tendency to be emotionally cold. In fact, Marianne even teases her
sister in the scene "Marianne and Elinor" by referring to her as "Cold–hearted Elinor!" (14). Also, in
the beginning of the play, Elinor wears a neck kerchief, as if covering herself up both

Jane Austen 's Novel And True Classic Sense And Sensibility
There are many authors whose works are considered to be classics; perhaps the most influential is
Jane Austen. Jane Austen wrote six novels, that in today's world, we call classics. Her first novel and
true classic Sense and Sensibility, was published in 1811 at a time when the world was just starting
to write full length novels. Though Jane Austen only lived to be forty–one, she contributed much too
modern literature; such as being one of the first major authors to make use of the three volume
novel, and to use chapters within the volumes (Sweeton). One of the many reasons as to why Jane
Austen's novels are considered classics is due to the fact that she wrote about real social and
financial issues of the day; however, financial and social issues are timeless, therefore they are still
relevant in today's world. As one follows along with the Dashwood sisters in Sense and Sensibility,
we see how the title of the story is very fitting; by providing one sister with 'sense' and the other
with 'sensibility,' the story has two different dynamics that create a timeless classic.
Born in 1775, Jane Austen grew up in a time when the dynamics of the world were constantly
changing. Jane Austen was born in Steventon a village of Hampshire England, to a large family that
consisted of seven other children (Jane Austen). Having an interest in writing since a young age, one
of her first works of writing was a novella titled Lady Susan, a story written in epistle form (which

Judgments of Conduct in Sense and Sensibility Essay
Sense and Sensibility is an elegant story that portrays the advantages of the first over the second, as
manifested between two sisters of opposing temperaments, one of whom loves wisely and the other
passionately. Set in London and its surrounding countryside, the story relates how Elinor, the eldest
of Mrs. Dashwood's daughters, and Marianne, the second eldest, share in the agony of tragic love. In
the opening of the book, Mrs. Dashwood and her three daughters are forced to move to a new and
smaller abode, as her husband's death left her fairly unwealthy.
During their transition, the Dashwood's stayed with her step–son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. John

On the way home to Barton, Elinor, Marianne, and Mrs. Jennings, escorted by Colonel Brandon,
made a short stop at Cleveland. There, Marianne regressed and became quite ill and at the advice of
a doctor, was confined to her bed. Mrs. Dashwood was immediately summoned at the request of
Elinor, who could no longer stand alone under the pressure of Marianne's pain compounded with her
own. To her astonishment, while Elinor anxiously sat awaiting her mother's arrival, who should
come to the door but Willoughby, the scoundrel who had left her sister for someone else. He had
come to profess his tremendous guilt in the horrible thing he had done to Marianne and to ask for as
much forgiveness as they were willing to grant him. This act of courtesy softened the hearts of both
Marianne, who had already forgiven him, and Elinor.
Upon the arrival of Mrs. Dashwood at Cleveland, Marianne quickly grew strong again and they
were soon able to make their way back to Barton. As Elinor sat by the window one afternoon, she
glanced across the lawn and saw the figure of a man on horseback. He stopped at their gate and she
thought him to be Colonel Brandon, but soon she saw that it was noneother than Edward Ferrars,
whom she hadn't seen since before the announcement of his engagement to Lucy. The whole of the

Jane Austen 's Sense And Sensibility
Recently, women around the world established and portrayed their ability to perform in the
workforce and as independents; various female writers paved the way for this sense of respect
toward women and an overall female reformation. Although women were mainly acknowledged for
their domestic role in the home and their social role as secondary to their husband, Jane Austen's
Sense and Sensibility illustrates the fullness of female capability while breaking the captive social
role of women in this time; Austen accomplishes this through contrasting the traditional view of
women and a reformed view, Marianne and Elinor, and the Dashwood girls reasons for marriage
compared to most women's. The setting of this novel takes place in the 1800's, a time defined by
strict gender roles and an overwhelming sense of tradition. Austen uses characters in Sense and
Sensibility to portray the distinction between those that view women as simply wives and those that
view the significance of individual women. Although many traditional women of this time viewed
marriage as a necessary task for survival, Austen emphasized that marriage is the natural
progression after a deep emotional attachment.
Certain characters in this novel display the tradition of the early 1800's characterized by a desire
only for marriage and a complete dependence on men for emotional support. Fanny Dashwood is a
character in the novel that displays a constant emphasis on wealth and social connections; she is not

Jane Austen 's Sense And Sensibility
Jane Austen is an English romantic novelist whose books emphasize the significance of strong
sibling relationships. Her novel Sense and Sensibility tells the story of two sisters, Elinor and
Marianne Dashwood, who experience great love and lost. Throughout the novel, Elinor and
Marianne encounter challenges, which alters each of them, and these individu18al changes
transform their sisterhood. Elinor and Marianne are close in age and are both educated, but their
difference in character causes opposition. Elinor is sensible and this causes her to be selfless,
practical, sensible, and responsible, while Marianne's indulgence in her sentiments causes her to be
selfish, and rude. Yet, as the novel continues the dynamic of their relationship improves. In this
paper, I will argue that the tension between Marianne and Elinor emerges because of differences in
their personality. However, as the novel progresses the tension between the two heroines decrease
because Marianne becomes more like Elinor. There have been many speculations of what causes the
tension in Elinor and Marianne's sisterhood. One critic, Gila P. Reinstein, claims that "The true
opposition in the novel is between selfishness and selflessness" (275). Reinstein supports this
argument by analyzing the heroines' actions and their patterns of speech and thought. Although I
agree that the contrasting characteristics of selflessness and selfishness play a monumental role in
the developing tension between the two heroines,

Sense And Sensibility And Pride And Prejudice By Jane Austen
Jane Austen a very talented writer wrote six books in her entire life time, the books are namely
Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion and Northanger
Abbey, out of which her top novels are Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. She was
vastly appreciated for her realistic way of writing and was highly valued for her clear and
meaningful messages conveyed through the novels. Some of the cretiques argues that her book
Sense and Sensibility is not that convincing and appealing to the audience compared to Pride and
Prejudice. Though the books she wrote were all about all about "women and outlined her books with

Sense and Sensibility is the story about three sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. Elinor is the
eldest daughter of Mr. Dashwood and according to the Southam criticism Marianne Dashwood,
sister of Elinor represents the "sense" and "sensibility" of the title. Mr. Henry Dashwood the father
of Elinor and Marianne leaves all his money to John Dashwood son from his first wife when he dies.
The second wife of Mr. Dashwood and her three daughters are left with no home to live and with a
very less income. This showed the social status of women during the Restoration period. The people
thought that the women in particular would not be able to handel the wealth and property like the
men so the three sisters including the mother second wife of Mr. Dashwood was left alone without a
single penny to servive on. Similarly in one of the most popular novels of Jane Austen, published in
1813 Pride and Prejudice had some similar conflicts of women facing difficulty with the society.

The Effects Of Emotional Appeals On The Mind Of Reasoning
Although it is difficult to find it written down anywhere, there is prevailing belief that decisions
should be made based on reason rather than emotions. The unfortunate and Unwarranted implication
is that emotions have no place in reasoning. There is some basis for the belief that emotions get in
the way of reasoning. For example, in an advertisement, emotional appeals are often used to cloud
the reasoning of consumers. Yet, few people would claim that reasoning has no place in emotion. At
the extremes, reasoning can interfere with appropriate responses, and emotions can interfere with
clear–headed reasoning. However, in the middle where most of life occurs reasoning and emotions
inform each other. Reasoning helps us to refine our emotions and emotions help us to evaluate our
reasoning and our emotions are means to understand the world around us, but neither one by itself is
incomplete. Jane Austen (16th December 1775–18th July 1817) was an English novelist whose
works for romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most
widely read authors in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary also
gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. She was educated primarily by her
father and older brothers and also by her own readings that she did. Since her teenage years to her
late thirties, she experimented with various literary forms. This book "Sense and

Civilized, Sense And Sensibility, By Jane Austen
Enjoyable, civilized "Sense and Sensibility" was the first and one of Jane Austen 's novels; she
wrote it in 1795, but it was not published for 16 years. It was written by a young woman who
ostensibly had little experience of the world – although her fiction proves she missed the little that
occurred on her domestic stage – and the story reflects that orientation, as a mother and her three
daughters wait passively while all the interesting men in the vicinity disappear on unexplained
missions to London.
In a modern story, the women would have demanded explanations. What gives "Sense and
Sensibility" its tension and mystery are that the characters rarely say what they mean. There is great
gossip within the women 's sphere, but with men. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edward leaves suddenly for London. The next man to appear is Col. Brandon, played by that
indispensable Alan Rickman. He is attracted to Marianne, but before he can act, she is smitten by the
dashing Willoughby (Greg Wise), who rescues her from a mishap and charms her off her feet. No
sooner have these men appeared when they, too, are called away to London – although not before
Col. Brandon has suggested, almost by osmosis, that he knows something unspeakable about his
rival Willoughby.
His secret is the sort of thing that would not be a secret long in the modern age, but in Austen 's
time, such things were not spoken of, and Brandon might even allow Marianne to make a disastrous
marriage rather than tell her what her maidenly ears should never hear. This maddening, intriguing
inability to simply blurt out the truth is indispensable to 19th–century fiction, and I find it
enormously satisfying. Better the character who leaves us to guess at unspeakable depths than one
who bores us with confessional psychobabble.
The men 's departure to London leaves the three daughters and their mother facing an indefinite
future in their sewing circle. So, when a kindly relative proposes a visit to London, they seize upon
it with desperation, and it is there that secrets are revealed and alliances are smashed or formed. The

The awkwardness that transpires as both Elinor and Edward attempt to write letters in the same
room shows both Elinor's and Edward's reluctance to show their feelings because of society's
judgements and develops their individual characters. Elinor is aware of the impact that her lack of
wealth has on her marriage prospects, so she does not admit her feelings for Edward explicitly to
him nor her family despite their existence. She is sensible and does not allow her love for a man
make her vulnerable. Edward also has difficulty expressing his emotions. His feelings are
complicated by his family's desires and his engagement to Lucy Steele (Sarah Elizabeth Keyes).
Despite his feelings for Elinor, he is characterized by his loyalty to his prior commitments. His
loyalty, while admirable, is also the hamartia that nearly keeps him away from Elinor forever.
Marianne Dashwood's passion and spontaneity is evident through her actions; she cuts off a lock of

town. Her excessive sensibility is a critique of women's dependence on men for happiness.

Mothers in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility Essay
Mothers in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility
"I can no more forget it, than a mother can forget her suckling child". Jane Austen wrote these words
about her novel, Sense and Sensibility, in a letter to her sister Cassandra in 1811. Such a maternal
feeling in Austen is interesting to note, particularly because any reader of hers is well aware of a
lack of mothers in her novels. Frequently we encounter heroines and other major characters whom,
if not motherless, have mothers who are deficient in maturity, showing affection, and/or common
sense. Specifically, I would like to look at Sense and Sensibility, which, according to Ros Ballaster's
introduction to the novel, "is full of, indeed over–crowded with, mothers" (vii). By ... Show more

Like Marianne, Mrs. Dashwood is romantic and whimsical, more prone to act on feelings than
reason. Also similar to her youngest daughter, she often misjudges both the characters and situations
of individuals. When Elinor tells Marianne of the difficulties Mrs. Ferrars presents in marrying
Edward, "Marianne was astonished to find how much the imagination of her mother and herself had
outstripped the truth" (18). Furthermore, Mrs. Dashwood's reaction to Willoughby is just as naïve as
Marianne's. "In Mrs. Dashwood's opinion, he was as faultless as in Marianne's" (43). It is only
Elinor, acting with the maternal caution her mother does not possess, who has reservations about
Marianne's suitor.
Thus, Mrs. Dashwood clearly fails as an authority figure for her children. She does not discourage
them from acting recklessly (such as Marianne's trip to Miss Smith's home with Willoughby without
a chaperone), nor does she provide the sort of structure or discipline that would prevent such
situations from arising in the first place. She does, however, possess the nurturing and affectionate
disposition that allows us to see her as, if not always a good mother, at least a loving and well–
intentioned one. When Marianne becomes ill, it is only her mother's presence that can put her at
ease: "Marianne's ideas were still, at intervals, fixed incoherently on her mother" (264).

Marianne Dashwood are viewed as two completely different people. Elinor is known to represent

Comparing Jane Austen's Sense And Sensibility
Jane Austen was a fabulous and accomplished writer, and Emma Thompson is a enjoyable
screenwriter; but when one watches or reads their works, it is natural as humans to ask questions.
Sometimes the questions can be answered by reviewing the sources, whether it be a movie or a
book, with more attention and purpose, but that is not always the case. There can never be complete
certainty when assuming the thoughts of others; Jane Austen may have just added in Margaret
Dashwood to Sense and Sensibility because she felt like having a third character, and now in our
present day, highschoolers are running around inventing dramatic and unique causes for this
individual's existence. Nevertheless, I will attempt to answer two questions accurately in this ...

In the 1995 film version of Sense and Sensibility, a major part of volume III is removed.
Willoughby's entire apology and Elinor's subsequent feelings are simply passed off; Marianne falls
ill, Mrs. Dashwood arrives, and Marianne miraculously returns to health. My first time watching this
movie left me confused, as an entire chapter consisting of nearly fifty five hundred words was not
there. Not only that, but the chapter provided clear remorse from Willoughby; while he still values
money over love, he is penitent of some of the damage his poor choices inflicted, and he goes to
apologize even when there is no need to. The big screen version instead shows Willoughby at the
wedding of Marianne and Colonel Brandon, staring regretfully from afar. The first explanation that
comes to mind would be for the sake of time. While the 1995 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility is
two hours and twenty minutes, a miniseries consisting of three sixty minute episodes was released in
2008. The latter contains Willoughby's apology, while the former has no mention. While the
miniseries had the room to smoothly explain such a story, the film could not add in the plea without
it appearing to be shoehorned in. Furthermore, the second cause for nixing the scene would be to
make Willoughby even more of a wicked libertine. Even when a girl he professed to love lay deathly
ill, he did even pay a visit! Surely there is no justification for that, lest one say work is more
important that human life. This move cemented the audience's hatred of Willoughby, and when he

miscommunication. In Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen reveals the danger of making judgements
on insufficient information through relationships between the characters. Miscommunication creates
confusion and a mix of emotions from the characters. Marianne thought she met her prince
charming, Willoughby, when she fell and he saved her. He saved her after she fell. Willoughby had a
"manly beauty" with a "good" name behind him (Austen 44–45). To Sir John, Willoughby was "as
good a kind of fellow as ever lived" because he was "pleasant" and a "good humored fellow"
(Austen 45). Once Marianne finds that out, she is sure that Willoughby was the type of man she
"liked" because of "his eagerness" and she was assured that he was "well worth catching" (Austen
46). From that day, Marianne and Willoughby had a well established relationship, and some
questioned if they had gotten engaged, due to how much time they were spending together. Then,
Willoughby suddenly has to leave Barton for business in town. Mrs. Jennings, a few months later,
invites Marianne and Elinor to town with her. But, in the meantime, Marianne did not hear anything
from Willoughby, and she became worried. At a party, Marianne sees WIlloughby and questions
why he has not responded to her letters she had previously sent. Willoughby had ... Show more

Marianne was anxious and overwrought for some reason, and she lashes out at her sister. A note

Marianne, not convinced, took it instantly up. 'It is, indeed, for Mrs. Jennings; how provoking!' 'You

Well in Sense and Sensibility, a novel whose story revolves around two sisters: Elinor and Marianne

Willoughby is an enchanting gentleman who truly impresses Marianne off her feet after she has
fallen in a rainstorm. He shares Marianne's sensibility and artistic tastes, and the two rapidly turn out

would likely have answered with rudeness and probably be insensitive. After fallen in love with
Marianne, he suddenly goes to London abandoning her and her feelings towards him. At the point

Edward Ferras, the brother of Fanny Dashwood, is a kind, honorable, and weird guy. Wealth doesn't

Jane Austen 's Sense And Sensibility
Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility takes a critical look at the limitations women possessed at the
turn of the eighteenth century. Consequently, the success of a woman was entirely dependent on a
man. In the novel, the main protagonists represent these two persuasions of thought. Elenor
Dashwood, the eldest daughter in the Dashwood household, portrays sense. In contrast, her younger
sister, Marianne Dashwood represents sensibility. The dichotomy of the title carries historical
significance in a time where logic and reasoning typical of the Classical period, began to fade.
Henceforth, Romantic ideals of romance and imagination swept over the British population.
Notably, Austen's writing structure includes various cases of free indirect ... Show more content on

Later, Fanny tells a story of her own mother's situation. "My mother was quite sick of it. Her income
was not her own, she said, with such perpetual claims on it; and it was unkind of my father, because
otherwise, the money would have been entirely at my mother's disposal, without any restriction
whatsoever" (Austen 11). Ironically, Fanny can relate her mother's experience with that of the
Dashwood women, yet, she lets greed and prospects drive her decision to deny them a sufficient
inheritance. In effect, women are pitted against each other in pursuit of success in the patriarchal
society they lived in. Fanny recognizes the little power she has as a woman and uses it to manipulate
her husband's decision. This examination is made feasible due to Austen's writing structure and
utilization of indirect discourse. Accordingly, allowing the freedom to make assumptions about a
character like Fanny, without explicitly telling the reader what to think or feel about her. In chapters
3 and 4, Elinor starkly contrasts with Marianne and her mother as being one of sense and one of
exaggerated sensibility. Markedly, Austen's writing style exudes humor and irony. In the event that
Elinor cautiously tells her mother, "I think you will like him when you know more of him...you may
esteem him" (Austen 15). Mrs. Dashwood, attempts to show absolute acceptance of Elinor's
underwhelming profession by stating, "Like him! I can feel no sentiment of approbation

Essay about Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice
Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen's characters always undergo an event that
morally changes their being. In Sense and Sensibility this moral change is obvious in Elinor and
Marianne. The development of these adolescents into mature, reasonable adults is a gradual
transformation seen in Sense and Sensibility. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy begin Pride and
Prejudice as arrogant and biased adults and end the story as liberal minded individuals. In Sense and
Sensibility the family has been forced to move from the plush lap of luxury into a more modest
setting. Mr. Dashwood has just passed away. Since this was a patrilineal society, the eldest son, John

Critical Analysis Of Sense And Sensibility, By Jane Austen
Analysis of Sense and Sensibility, by Jane Austen, from the feminist perspective Sense and
Sensibility starts with immediately portraying the gap between power related to gender. Henry

first wife. The current Mrs Dashwood and their three daughters, Marianne, Elinor and Margaret's
faiths are now completely in John Dashwood's hands. They have nothing to say about the matter

Edward's brother Robert finally persuades him to end the engagement, and it is not until then that
Edward realises that he had fallen out of love with Lucy a long time ago, and he proposes to Elinor
instead. The new engagement is not very popular with Mrs Ferrars either, since she cannot have a
poor woman as her daughter–in–law! Elinor would not be able to contribute financially to the family
either, as her worth was rather on the same level as Lucy's. Although, Mrs Ferrars runs into some
problems at this point, when Robert comes out with that he and Lucy are to be married. Their
marriage brings us back to Austen's way to portray expectations contra what is actually happening.
No one had expected that Robert would propose to Lucy, but he still did it. This puts Mrs Ferrars in
such a position that if she goes through with her threat of disowning her sons due to their improper
marriage, she will loose both of them, which eventually makes her accept her sons' partners. Even

How Did Hilda Doolittle As An Emagist Writer?
Along with the National geographic society being founded, 1888 was also the year Hilda Doolittle
was born in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. This soon to be Imagist writer was known mainly for her
poems. What differentiated her from most other Imagists at the time was her identity a female and
bisexual which both at the time were severely oppressed. Along with the political stance, Hilda
Doolittle also faced struggles growing up due to being only daughter in her family and her father
being a science professor (Hernandez). These conflicts however did not affect her ability to write
but are prominent in her writing. Her childhood and the relationships cause her to evolve into an
imagist writer by shaping the way she thought of herself and expressing through her writing. Hilda
Doolittle's lifestyle and relationship with her family shaped her thinking. Hilda's mother was a
Moravian and her father was an Astronomer and a professor (Hernandez). Her mother taught music
and painting and was a pianist and she was Hilda's inspiration to be an artist. Her father was a
scientist and he actively discouraged her explorations of arts so he tutored her daily but she said that
the more he explained, the less she understood (Hilda). He wanted her to be the next Marie Curie
and advocated for feminism but only for science. He forbade her from art school and even though
her mother was an artist, she was shy and devoted to her husband's work and beliefs. An example

Essay Sense vs Sensibility
Often, two people who have endured similar life experiences and share an unmistakable parallel in
lifestyles can be viewed as duplicates of one individual. In Sense and Sensibility, the two main
characters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood can be seen as two extensions of the same character. The
sisters are relatively close in age, grew up with the same social expectations of the same time period
and household, and they evidently experienced similar childhood and family trauma and problems.
Although it could be argued that they are the same character, these young women are very different

to be the voice of reason in the household. Even though she too was affected by his passing, she
took the responsibility of caring for her mourning family by entertaining guests and handling the
legal fundamentals with her brother. By staying calm and collected, Elinor proves that her rationality

Marianne is oblivious to the offenses and conflict that she is creating through her carelessness, as
well as the fact that Elinor is covering them up. While the sisters are living in London, Marianne's

Sense and Sensibility was written by Jane Austen in 1811, the novel describes the life of three young

Jane Austen Gender Roles
In Jane Austen's novel, Sense and Sensibility, the emphasis on different dominant values rendered a
foundational perceiving for audiences as an insight of Georgian Era. Her constant establishment of

Sense And Sensibility Play Summary
My impression of the play Sense & Sensibility adapted by Jessica Swale was that it was almost like
a 'soap opera'. There were tons of drama throughout the play and was also was almost two and half
hours long. It was based on a family the lives in England from the mid 90's called the Dashwood's.
Throughout the play it was mostly based on the struggles that the Dashwood's went through on a
daily basis. The main struggle was them losing their father John Dashwood. They lost their castle of
a house and almost all of the wealth. Everything went to Mr. Dashwood's half–brother and his wife.
Also, the love feuds that went on between Elinor Dashwood and Marianne Dashwood played a huge
part of the play. Sense & Sensibility started off with the Dashwood's losing their house and basically
all of their money. This caused great anger and fear for the Dashwood family. Before the family had
to move out of the house one of the protagonist Elinor Dashwood fell in love with her sister in law's
brother Edward. They had to move into their distant relatives the Middleton's family. Their house
wasn't anything special and lived in a small town. It was hard for the Dashwood's to adjust to a
completely different lifestyle. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

having them all in white because it made them seem more important than the others and when the
other played a different character it obvious. The other characters were dressed in typical mid 90's
England wardrobe with lots of colors and pants. The scenery of the play was based on the screen in
the back of the stage. It was changed throughout different scenes. The scene would look like you
were in a house, or outside in the valley, or by the ocean. The music in the play was when Marianne

Jane Austen's first book to be published was Sense and Sensibility. Austen's story depicts the life of

eldest daughter, Elinor. Throughout this story, Austen introduces many characters, some of which

Jennings, Lucy Steele is another important character in the story. Lucy let's Elinor know that she has
been engaged to Edward Ferrars for five years. This creates internal struggles with Elinor because
she had loved Edward. Lucy, Elinor, Marianne, Charlotte, and Mrs. Jennings all go to London for a
trip right after Elinor learns of Lucy's engagement. Marianne is hoping to meet John Willoughby for
an explanation and Lucy and Elinor are hoping to see Edward. While in London, Lucy meets Robert
Ferrars whom she finds to be an exceptional gentleman. Lucy and Robert end up marrying which
frees up Edward for Elinor. If Lucy hadn't been a part in the story she would not have been able to
meet Robert, making Edward and Lucy engaged. Lucy had a very important role in the plot.
Einstein's butterfly theory shows how one little thing can change the outcome of something
completely. If anything had changed in Austen's story nothing would be the same. Each minor
character that is included has a purpose to her story and they are all important. If one character is
taken out then there wouldn't be as much insight to the other characters and there would be drastic
changes to the original plot. Austen does a great job at controlling her characters to give each one

Sense and Sensibility was first published in 1811, by Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility represents
the neoclassical, dualistic moral world where values and exclusion values will ultimately be
successful in a painful, romantic feeling. Not only that, he was making serious cynicisms of

Marianne Moore 's The Fish Essay
Marianne Moore's nature and artistic background contribute to her modernist style and is prominent
in her poem "The Fish." Marianne Moore wrote in the 1930's, a decade of change. Moore is
characterized as a writer who uses overall nature, art, life, modesty, and humor. Her writing is
recognized by its descriptions, and observations of people, places, animals, and art. Her poems
reflect the relationship between common and uncommon ("Marianne Moore" Poetry Foundation).
Marianne Moore's biographical background contributes to her symbolic writings. Moore's mother is
the person who most inspired her. She came from a divorced home and lived with her mother and
her grandfather. He was a presbyterian pastor. Her father was absent in her life due to the fact that he
was also institutionalized. Moore's early jobs inspire the nature part of her writings. After college,
she was in charge of the commercial department of the United States Indian School at Carlisle. She
taught subjects such as bookkeeping and typing to young Indians. In 1918, she decided to move to
New York where she taught at a private school. Three years later she was an assistant at the Hudson

How The Role Of Society Exposed In Sense And Sensibility
Often people do not think about how much society has changed or what it would it be like if equal
rights were not around. In the late 1700s to the early 1800s, families did not even have the choice in
where their money went once the man of the home was gone. Jane Austen, the author of Sense and
Sensibility, does a phenomenal job of showing the world the struggles women faced during that
time. The way she meticulously shapes the characters around the society that they live in, gives
major insight on the unfair laws that were held back then. Almost every character has a specific
moment where society affected their happiness. Some characters strongly pull away from the way of
society with their unwillingness to accept that laws are laws. ... Show more content on

way Austen writes these characters and their personalities, it shows how she personally feels about

first way being with Elinor, the society makes her so ashamed of who she is. Elinor has completely

Sense And Sensibility In The Novel By Jane Austen
Sense and Sensibility written by Jane Austen is a novel that does not only deal with two sister's love
matters, but how two dissimilar personalities respond to society and love. The theme of "society vs.
sense" is existed throughout the novel because it is concerned with the ruling of one's feelings, or
the incapability to do so. Declaring love for someone, nurturing one's self and not caring what
people think is important in expressing this kind of "social duty."(Pam Morris, 43) This kind of
theme is always present, with some dramatization, within Emma Thompson's 1995 film adaption.
Literary critic Deborah Kaplan argues that Thompson's film adaption demonstrates
"harlequinization", where the narrative structure of the "mass–market structure", where a lot of
people really like them, it focuses on a hero and a heroin's courtship at the expense of the other
characters and experiences. Kaplan is stating that the film is negative because some characters are
underrepresented. She's right, but at the same time it is to be expected because it is a film adaption. I
argue that Kaplan is right, the film adaption does demonstrate this "harlequinization" to the point
where it ignores all the important scenes within the novel such as how the Dashwood sisters are
represented, Marianne's rescuers Willoughby and Colonel Brandon in contrast to the novel. With all
of Jane Austen's novels, Sense and Sensibility gives the readers an insight of the personal lives of
nineteenth century women, Marianne and Elinor Dashwood are the examples of heroines, sisters
with dissimilar personalities. Marriage is a way to alter wealth for women, it is always a central
theme within Austen's novels. In the novel, the Dashwood women are left poor because the fortunes
of their father was inherited by their brother. The women leave their home and move to a home in
Devonshire which belongs to John Middleton, who is Mrs. Dashwood's cousin. This is what
introduces possible suitors for the two eldest Dashwood sisters, Marianne and Elinor. Edward
Ferrars and Elinor fall in love and Marianne falls for John Willoughby. In the film, the Dashwood

others decisions, but they understand the others motives for their reactions. They never talk down to
or about the other sister for their actions that involve their sense or sensibility personality traits.
They respect each other, and it's important for their relationship that they've never tried to change
the other sister. Perhaps, the sisters learn from each other and grow as individuals. Elinor learns to
have more sensibility in her life. Marianne learns to react to situations with more logic, which is a
"sense" characteristic.
The passage of the novel that relates to the characteristic of sense is chapter 22. This chapter
explains the reactions of Elinor as she finds out about Lucy and Edward's secret engagement.
Edward is Elinor's love interest. They spend a lot of their time together and really bonded. She keeps
her composure when hearing the news from Lucy. She doesn't react erratically. She thinks the

How Poetry Makes Nothing Happen
1. Introduction
W.H Auden famously wrote "poetry makes nothing happen." Do you think this accurately describes
the political and social place of poetry in the twentieth century and/or the twenty first century?
Explain why you agree or disagree in the case of your chosen poet, justifying your answer with
close reference to your poet's work and its reception and interpretation.
This essay examines the effects that poetry has on society, both socially and politically. Poetry has
been around for centuries, and it is a common misconception that it serves no purpose. One critic in
particular, W.H Auden claimed, "poetry makes nothing happen". However poetry awakens the
reader's eyes and gives an insight to the society in which we live in today, and which has been
before us. As evident in Ezra Pound's work, as he explored the use of imagism to critique
modernism and twentieth century, forcing the readers to think more about society as a whole. The
purpose of this essay is to show that poetry does make something happen and can have instrumental
effects on society, whether it is a poet critiquing society, or simply providing another interpretation.
Poetry is a code than needs to be cracked, it is a riddle that makes the reader bring out their true
creativity, which is why I disagree with W.H Auden in saying, "poetry makes nothing happen."
2. Approach

Dramatic And Dramatic Elements In Sense And Sensibility By...
In Sense and Sensibility, dramatic and theatrical elements played a major role in how the audience
perceived the play and related it back to the theme of how people should follow their heart instead
of the opinions of others. These elements combined allow for this theme to be shown throughout the
play without being forced. This gives the audience a great opportunity to experience the world of the
play in a deeper understanding. Taibi Magar uses these designs effectively to create an enjoyable
performance with a deeper meaning that the audience can relate to. The conflict of Sense and
Sensibility revolves around the theme of the battle between choosing what the heart wants and what
others want. Throughout the play the characters had to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The song was played at the beginning and the end of the play was Beyoncé's "Single Ladies." With
lyrics such as "If you like it then you should have put a ring on it" fits the theme perfectly. This line
means that if Edward and John liked Elinor and Marianne then they should have asked for their
hand in marriage instead of fearing their family to disapprove of their marriage. When this song was
played at the beginning the audience was given a sense of dramatic irony. The dramatic irony is that
the audience now knew that the play would revolve around marriage that the characters did not
know. After the play the audience could understand fully how the song correlates to the play. The
song also helped bring a modern twist and create a happy mood that the audience could sing along
to and interact with the play more. The set, designed by Peter Ksander, used few pieces of furniture
and few changes with the backdrop to highlight the heart not needing money as a fuel for desire.
Throughout the play the audience sees how Edward Ferrars (Rishan Dhamija) struggles internally
on whether he should marry for power and wealth, or happiness. The audience experiences this
when Edward Ferrars first speaks with Elinor Dashwood (Shanelle Nicole Leonard) the scene is
kept simple and tidy with only a wooden table and a rug. There is no extravagant lights or fancy

Sense vs Sensibility: A Comparison of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood

  • 1. How To Write A Dialectical Journal For Enduring Love Journal 1 Mrs. Dashwood is noticeably conflicted about leaving the family home, Norland. On one hand, "she was impatient to be gone," even though "to remove far from that beloved spot was impossible" (Ch. 3 pg. 12). Clearly it is a struggle to relive the grief of losing her husband in the house where they spent their life together, but at the same time it is very difficult to leave the only house that her and her daughters have ever called home. This inner turmoil reveals that the sense of home can be both loved and hated. When it comes time for them to finally leave the house, "Many tears were shed by them in their last adieus to a place so much beloved." (Ch. 5 pg. 25) The middle daughter, Marianne, says, "When shall I cease to regret you! –When learn to feel a home elsewhere!" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Willoughby and Marianne sparks an interesting relationship. Marianne is enthralled with the charming, handsome, and intelligent man who carried her down the hill in the rain. "His manly beauty and more than common gracefulness were instantly the theme of general of admiration." (Ch. 9 pg. 40) Marianne already the constant romantic, finds him to be everything she could hope for. "His person and air were equal to what her fancy had ever drawn for the hero of her favorite story." (Ch. 9 pg. 41) It is at this point in the novel when the reader begins to realize the meaning behind the title Sense and Sensibility. The two protagonists, Elinor and Marianne, represent sense and sensibility. Elinor's personality and relationship with Edward is certainly sensible, while Marianne is more emotional and passionate, as reflected by her budding relationship with Mr. Willoughby. Every once and a while there is a clash between "sense and sensibility" through the two sisters. As the novel progresses perhaps Austen will reveal whether reason can influence emotion, vice versa, or if they both influence each other throughout the sister's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. A Comparison and Contrast Between the Two Poems, Poetry... "I, too, dislike it: There are things that are important beyond all this fiddle." Poetry has been around for a long time. As the years go by poetry adapts to the time period. However, the authors have different views. Majority of them will read and enjoy all types of poem, but they have their own opinions. The new, has to be truly unique to the author and to the time period. Shakespeare still had plays that we study, but it is hard to comprehend the message behind the words. Worlds change and the literature's change with the trends. The important question is how it should change. During each time period there are people that publish their opinions, but different people have different ideas. Within Poetry and Of Modern Poetry shows the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Today the only time we read Homer is when we are forced to in school. Once we have read it and it is explained, then we understand. We can't understand things that don't pertain to the time period. The poetry has to be something straight forward and understandable. "The poem was suffused with a calm curiosity that seemed to know it wouldn't get anywhere faster by being overeager. (Osborn) Being straightforward is the way people understand things. It has to be forward and simple. The simplicity can touch people as much as the complex .Poetry is of the mind and has to continue to change with the time. Change keeps it modern. Modern talks about how poems have to genuine or about something useful. Poetry has to be about what is real and no the imaginary ideas that feel the books. A simple thing can be lead to idea or to a meaning beyond the object, but it needs the simple object. Poets have to start to rely on objects such as items, but also events. Things that happen in a life can be just as valuable as a material object. "' Moore's poetry does not invite biographical interpretation', Leavell mines the early poems for references to events in the poet's life and evidence of 'profound feelings' that Moore herself revealed to no one." • 5. Mid-Day By Marianne Moore Analysis Two Different Views of Modernist Feminism Throughout the Modernist period in American literature history, many brilliant authors expressed their thoughts and feelings through their works. Two of the authors we observed in class that I found to be the most interesting were Hilda Doolittle (H.D.) and Marianne Moore. These two poets had many similar modernist ideas that they expressed in their works. They are both admired for abolishing some of the feminine traits of writing poetry during this era, ad proving that women were just as equal as men. Overall, there work helped shape poetry in the modernist period. First, H.D.'s "Mid–day" poem is a great example of how since she was a female, she struggled to get published. The poem expresses a great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Doolittle was more soft spoken and expressed it a somber manner, while not offering many solutions to the ethical dilemma she faced. Moore, on the other hand, was more aggressive and wanted people to know women work just as hard as men and should be recognized in a higher regard for it. While Moore often speaks her mind she still manages to give off a calm demeanor, only expressing that women are simply doing what they are supposed to just like men. She implies in her work that women should not seek anything extra for doing their duties as women, but only the same amount of respect that men get for doing their basic duties. These two poets, along with many others helped shaped the Modernist period, something that is often overlooked. During this time period there was a lot of distress about the changing of morals and attitudes of people. These poets, and those alike were able to spread some influence, and helped shape modern day ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Dashwood Vs Elinor In the novel, Sense and Sensibility, by Jane Austen and the article, Impulse and Virtue in Jane Austen: Sense and Sensibility in Two Centuries, by Edward Joseph Shoben Jr. the contrasting roles of sisters in the nineteenth century are demonstrated as they face their roles in society. The sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, differ in many ways, especially in the way they feel and are effected by their respective emotions and in their response to societal norms. Elinor demonstrates "sense" through her adherence of societal norms whereas Marianne exemplifies "sensibility", expressing her emotions to their fullest extent. A major way in which Elinor and Marianne Dashwood's personalities differ is in the way they deal with emotion. Every aspect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "For Marianne, morality is an inherent quality of selfhood rather than a process of judgement based on social rules. Confronted by a world in which pettiness and egotism appear virtually universally, she rebels by setting the authenticity of her own impulses above the authority of society" (Shoben 532). Marianne celebrates her admiration and love for Willoughby; she gives him a lock of her hair without being engaged to him which was unheard of during these times. She also recognizes their relationship, against the norms of society, when she arrives in London. Marianne writes Willoughby several letters in the hopes of seeing him once again. Her extremely public relationship with the mysterious Willoughby caused others to "doubt sometimes ... of their being really engaged, and this doubt was enough to prevent her [Elinor] making any inquiry of Marianne" (Austen 66). The odd context of the relationship frequently causes Marianne's mother and sister to worry for her candidness. The two hope and expect an engagement to be announced several times during the beginning of the novel. Marianne also demonstrates her rebellion against social norms in regard to Colonel Brandon. Rather than being charmed by the idea of the eligible bachelor having feelings for her, she is disgraced. She shares with her family her belief that the Colonel is too old to even be able to feel ... • 9. Summary Of Katie Hammil's Sense And Sensibility Katie Hammil's play "Sense and Sensibility," adapted from Jane Austen's novel of the same name, is about reservedness and openness and how both behaviors can cause misunderstanding, but ultimately result in the same outcome, which is revealed through the play's characterization of the two Dashwood sisters, and the conflict between them, which is all highlighted by the lighting and costume design as well as the acting in the Playmakers Repertory Company production. Elinor Dashwood (Shanelle Nichole Leonard) and her sister Marianne Dashwood (Emily Bosco) are two people of very different temperaments. Elinor is characterized as reserved, and she works to restrain her emotions for the sake of decorum and because she believes it is unseemly. "I WILL be mistress of myself," she exclaims as Edward Ferrars (Rishan Dhamija) appears at the end of the play, in the scene "Edward is Married" (106). Marianne, on the other hand, is a lot more open about her emotions, and is characterized as a more lively and sensitive young woman. Elinor's personality causes her to bottle up her feelings toward Edward, making her extremely unhappy, while Marianne's willingness to love Willoughby (Geoffrey Culbertson) results in him taking advantage of her. The sisters's differences causes conflict between them, as they cannot understand why the other acts as she does. Elinor desperately wishes her sister would be more composed, while Marianne wishes Elinor would be more uninhibited. This often leaves them at odds with one another, as seen in the end of the scene "Brandon's Letter." Ultimately, however, both sisters are able to find romance and a happy ending, and can finally begin to learn from their mistakes and accept each other for how they are. Both young women's temperaments are reflected in their costumes, designed by Olivera Gajic. Throughout the entirety of the play, Elinor wears a dress of light blue, a color that implies ice and coldness, which mirrors her tendency to be emotionally cold. • 11. Jane Austen 's Novel And True Classic Sense And Sensibility There are many authors whose works are considered to be classics; perhaps the most influential is Jane Austen. Jane Austen wrote six novels, that in today's world, we call classics. Her first novel and true classic Sense and Sensibility, was published in 1811 at a time when the world was just starting to write full length novels. Though Jane Austen only lived to be forty–one, she contributed much too modern literature; such as being one of the first major authors to make use of the three volume novel, and to use chapters within the volumes (Sweeton). One of the many reasons as to why Jane Austen's novels are considered classics is due to the fact that she wrote about real social and financial issues of the day; however, financial and social issues are timeless, therefore they are still relevant in today's world. As one follows along with the Dashwood sisters in Sense and Sensibility, we see how the title of the story is very fitting; by providing one sister with 'sense' and the other with 'sensibility,' the story has two different dynamics that create a timeless classic. Born in 1775, Jane Austen grew up in a time when the dynamics of the world were constantly changing. Jane Austen was born in Steventon a village of Hampshire England, to a large family that consisted of seven other children (Jane Austen). Having an interest in writing since a young age, one of her first works of writing was a novella titled Lady Susan, a story written in epistle form (which means as a ... Judgments of Conduct in Sense and Sensibility Essay Sense and Sensibility is an elegant story that portrays the advantages of the first over the second, as manifested between two sisters of opposing temperaments, one of whom loves wisely and the other passionately. Set in London and its surrounding countryside, the story relates how Elinor, the eldest of Mrs. Dashwood's daughters, and Marianne, the second eldest, share in the agony of tragic love. In the opening of the book, Mrs. Dashwood and her three daughters are forced to move to a new and smaller abode, as her husband's death left her fairly unwealthy. During their transition, the Dashwood's stayed with her step–son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. John Dashwood. It is there where Elinor, practical and conventional, met and fell in love ... There, Marianne regressed and became quite ill and at the advice of a doctor, was confined to her bed. Mrs. Dashwood was immediately summoned at the request of Elinor, who could no longer stand alone under the pressure of Marianne's pain compounded with her own. To her astonishment, while Elinor anxiously sat awaiting her mother's arrival, who should come to the door but Willoughby, the scoundrel who had left her sister for someone else. He had come to profess his tremendous guilt in the horrible thing he had done to Marianne and to ask for as much forgiveness as they were willing to grant him. This act of courtesy softened the hearts of both Marianne, who had already forgiven him, and Elinor. Upon the arrival of Mrs. Dashwood at Cleveland, Marianne quickly grew strong again and they were soon able to make their way back to Barton. As Elinor sat by the window one afternoon, she glanced across the lawn and saw the figure of a man on horseback. • 15. Jane Austen 's Sense And Sensibility Recently, women around the world established and portrayed their ability to perform in the workforce and as independents; various female writers paved the way for this sense of respect toward women and an overall female reformation. Although women were mainly acknowledged for their domestic role in the home and their social role as secondary to their husband, Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility illustrates the fullness of female capability while breaking the captive social role of women in this time; Austen accomplishes this through contrasting the traditional view of women and a reformed view, Marianne and Elinor, and the Dashwood girls reasons for marriage compared to most women's. The setting of this novel takes place in the 1800's, a time defined by strict gender roles and an overwhelming sense of tradition. Austen uses characters in Sense and Sensibility to portray the distinction between those that view women as simply wives and those that view the significance of individual women. Although many traditional women of this time viewed marriage as a necessary task for survival, Austen emphasized that marriage is the natural progression after a deep emotional attachment. Certain characters in this novel display the tradition of the early 1800's characterized by a desire only for marriage and a complete dependence on men for emotional support. • 17. Jane Austen 's Sense And Sensibility Jane Austen is an English romantic novelist whose books emphasize the significance of strong sibling relationships. Her novel Sense and Sensibility tells the story of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who experience great love and lost. Throughout the novel, Elinor and Marianne encounter challenges, which alters each of them, and these individu18al changes transform their sisterhood. Elinor and Marianne are close in age and are both educated, but their difference in character causes opposition. Elinor is sensible and this causes her to be selfless, practical, sensible, and responsible, while Marianne's indulgence in her sentiments causes her to be selfish, and rude. Yet, as the novel continues the dynamic of their relationship improves. In this paper, I will argue that the tension between Marianne and Elinor emerges because of differences in their personality. However, as the novel progresses the tension between the two heroines decrease because Marianne becomes more like Elinor. There have been many speculations of what causes the tension in Elinor and Marianne's sisterhood. One critic, Gila P. Reinstein, claims that "The true opposition in the novel is between selfishness and selflessness" (275). Reinstein supports this argument by analyzing the heroines' actions and their patterns of speech and thought. Although I agree that the contrasting characteristics of selflessness and selfishness play a monumental role in the developing tension between the two heroines, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She was vastly appreciated for her realistic way of writing and was highly valued for her clear and meaningful messages conveyed through the novels. Some of the cretiques argues that her book Sense and Sensibility is not that convincing and appealing to the audience compared to Pride and Prejudice. Elinor is the eldest daughter of Mr. Dashwood and according to the Southam criticism Marianne Dashwood, sister of Elinor represents the "sense" and "sensibility" of the title. Mr. Henry Dashwood the father of Elinor and Marianne leaves all his money to John Dashwood son from his first wife when he dies. The second wife of Mr. Dashwood and her three daughters are left with no home to live and with a very less income. This showed the social status of women during the Restoration period. The people thought that the women in particular would not be able to handel the wealth and property like the men so the three sisters including the mother second wife of Mr. Dashwood was left alone without a single penny to servive on. Similarly in one of the most popular novels of Jane Austen, published in 1813 Pride and Prejudice had some similar conflicts of women facing difficulty with the society. The Effects Of Emotional Appeals On The Mind Of Reasoning Although it is difficult to find it written down anywhere, there is prevailing belief that decisions should be made based on reason rather than emotions. The unfortunate and Unwarranted implication is that emotions have no place in reasoning. There is some basis for the belief that emotions get in the way of reasoning. For example, in an advertisement, emotional appeals are often used to cloud the reasoning of consumers. Yet, few people would claim that reasoning has no place in emotion. At the extremes, reasoning can interfere with appropriate responses, and emotions can interfere with clear–headed reasoning. However, in the middle where most of life occurs reasoning and emotions inform each other. Reasoning helps us to refine our emotions and emotions help us to evaluate our reasoning and our emotions are means to understand the world around us, but neither one by itself is incomplete. Jane Austen (16th December 1775–18th July 1817) was an English novelist whose works for romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read authors in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary also gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. Civilized, Sense And Sensibility, By Jane Austen Enjoyable, civilized "Sense and Sensibility" was the first and one of Jane Austen 's novels; she wrote it in 1795, but it was not published for 16 years. It was written by a young woman who ostensibly had little experience of the world – although her fiction proves she missed the little that occurred on her domestic stage – and the story reflects that orientation, as a mother and her three daughters wait passively while all the interesting men in the vicinity disappear on unexplained missions to London. In a modern story, the women would have demanded explanations. What gives "Sense and Sensibility" its tension and mystery are that the characters rarely say what they mean. No sooner have these men appeared when they, too, are called away to London – although not before Col. Brandon has suggested, almost by osmosis, that he knows something unspeakable about his rival Willoughby. His secret is the sort of thing that would not be a secret long in the modern age, but in Austen 's time, such things were not spoken of, and Brandon might even allow Marianne to make a disastrous marriage rather than tell her what her maidenly ears should never hear. This maddening, intriguing inability to simply blurt out the truth is indispensable to 19th–century fiction, and I find it enormously satisfying. Better the character who leaves us to guess at unspeakable depths than one who bores us with confessional psychobabble. The men 's departure to London leaves the three daughters and their mother facing an indefinite future in their sewing circle. • 27. Mothers in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility Essay Mothers in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility "I can no more forget it, than a mother can forget her suckling child". Jane Austen wrote these words about her novel, Sense and Sensibility, in a letter to her sister Cassandra in 1811. Such a maternal feeling in Austen is interesting to note, particularly because any reader of hers is well aware of a lack of mothers in her novels. Frequently we encounter heroines and other major characters whom, if not motherless, have mothers who are deficient in maturity, showing affection, and/or common sense. Specifically, I would like to look at Sense and Sensibility, which, according to Ros Ballaster's introduction to the novel, "is full of, indeed over–crowded with, mothers" (vii). By ... Also similar to her youngest daughter, she often misjudges both the characters and situations of individuals. When Elinor tells Marianne of the difficulties Mrs. Ferrars presents in marrying Edward, "Marianne was astonished to find how much the imagination of her mother and herself had outstripped the truth" (18). Furthermore, Mrs. Dashwood's reaction to Willoughby is just as naïve as Marianne's. "In Mrs. Dashwood's opinion, he was as faultless as in Marianne's" (43). It is only Elinor, acting with the maternal caution her mother does not possess, who has reservations about Marianne's suitor. Thus, Mrs. Dashwood clearly fails as an authority figure for her children. She does not discourage them from acting recklessly (such as Marianne's trip to Miss Smith's home with Willoughby without a chaperone), nor does she provide the sort of structure or discipline that would prevent such situations from arising in the first place. She does, however, possess the nurturing and affectionate disposition that allows us to see her as, if not always a good mother, at least a loving and well– intentioned one. When Marianne becomes ill, it is only her mother's presence that can put her at ease: "Marianne's ideas were still, at intervals, fixed incoherently on her mother" (264). Comparing Jane Austen's Sense And Sensibility Jane Austen was a fabulous and accomplished writer, and Emma Thompson is a enjoyable screenwriter; but when one watches or reads their works, it is natural as humans to ask questions. Sometimes the questions can be answered by reviewing the sources, whether it be a movie or a book, with more attention and purpose, but that is not always the case. There can never be complete certainty when assuming the thoughts of others; Jane Austen may have just added in Margaret Dashwood to Sense and Sensibility because she felt like having a third character, and now in our present day, highschoolers are running around inventing dramatic and unique causes for this individual's existence. In the 1995 film version of Sense and Sensibility, a major part of volume III is removed. Willoughby's entire apology and Elinor's subsequent feelings are simply passed off; Marianne falls ill, Mrs. Dashwood arrives, and Marianne miraculously returns to health. My first time watching this movie left me confused, as an entire chapter consisting of nearly fifty five hundred words was not there. Not only that, but the chapter provided clear remorse from Willoughby; while he still values money over love, he is penitent of some of the damage his poor choices inflicted, and he goes to apologize even when there is no need to. The big screen version instead shows Willoughby at the wedding of Marianne and Colonel Brandon, staring regretfully from afar. The first explanation that comes to mind would be for the sake of time. While the 1995 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility is two hours and twenty minutes, a miniseries consisting of three sixty minute episodes was released in 2008. The latter contains Willoughby's apology, while the former has no mention. While the miniseries had the room to smoothly explain such a story, the film could not add in the plea without it appearing to be shoehorned in. Furthermore, the second cause for nixing the scene would be to make Willoughby even more of a wicked libertine. Even when a girl he professed to love lay deathly ill, he did even pay a visit! Surely there is no justification for that, lest one say work is more important that human life. Miscommunication In Sense And Sensibility, By Jane Austen Problems From Miscommunication Throughout history, relationships between people have been questioned based off what people have heard or seen. Jane Austen writes the love story of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne, that have conflicts when it comes to their relationships caused by miscommunication. In Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen reveals the danger of making judgements on insufficient information through relationships between the characters. Miscommunication creates confusion and a mix of emotions from the characters. Marianne thought she met her prince charming, Willoughby, when she fell and he saved her. He saved her after she fell. Willoughby had a "manly beauty" with a "good" name behind him (Austen 44–45). To Sir John, Willoughby was "as good a kind of fellow as ever lived" because he was "pleasant" and a "good humored fellow" (Austen 45). Once Marianne finds that out, she is sure that Willoughby was the type of man she "liked" because of "his eagerness" and she was assured that he was "well worth catching" (Austen 46). Consequently, the success of a woman was entirely dependent on a man. In the novel, the main protagonists represent these two persuasions of thought. Elenor Dashwood, the eldest daughter in the Dashwood household, portrays sense. In contrast, her younger sister, Marianne Dashwood represents sensibility. The dichotomy of the title carries historical significance in a time where logic and reasoning typical of the Classical period, began to fade. Henceforth, Romantic ideals of romance and imagination swept over the British population. Notably, Austen's writing structure includes various cases of free indirect ... Her income was not her own, she said, with such perpetual claims on it; and it was unkind of my father, because otherwise, the money would have been entirely at my mother's disposal, without any restriction whatsoever" (Austen 11). Ironically, Fanny can relate her mother's experience with that of the Dashwood women, yet, she lets greed and prospects drive her decision to deny them a sufficient inheritance. In effect, women are pitted against each other in pursuit of success in the patriarchal society they lived in. Fanny recognizes the little power she has as a woman and uses it to manipulate her husband's decision. This examination is made feasible due to Austen's writing structure and utilization of indirect discourse. Accordingly, allowing the freedom to make assumptions about a character like Fanny, without explicitly telling the reader what to think or feel about her. In chapters 3 and 4, Elinor starkly contrasts with Marianne and her mother as being one of sense and one of exaggerated sensibility. Markedly, Austen's writing style exudes humor and irony. In the event that Elinor cautiously tells her mother, "I think you will like him when you know more of him...you may esteem him" (Austen 15). The vision I have has never left me, I will always remember this from his tiny little van, he would open the back doors to reveal a grinding wheel; he would bend over and peer to look at you with creepy expression, I think he did this to scare us, thinking because he was different from other people. • 47. Critical Analysis Of Sense And Sensibility, By Jane Austen Analysis of Sense and Sensibility, by Jane Austen, from the feminist perspective Sense and Sensibility starts with immediately portraying the gap between power related to gender. Henry Dashwood is dying, and leaves all his heritage to his son, John Dashwood, who is the child of his first wife. The current Mrs Dashwood and their three daughters, Marianne, Elinor and Margaret's faiths are now completely in John Dashwood's hands. They have nothing to say about the matter whatsoever. John promises his father to give a part of his inheritance to them, but after his wife's persuasion he leaves them a very small sum of his fortune. This leads to them having to live a poor life in Barton Cottage over at the Middleton family, who are distantly acquainted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edward's brother Robert finally persuades him to end the engagement, and it is not until then that Edward realises that he had fallen out of love with Lucy a long time ago, and he proposes to Elinor instead. The new engagement is not very popular with Mrs Ferrars either, since she cannot have a poor woman as her daughter–in–law! Elinor would not be able to contribute financially to the family either, as her worth was rather on the same level as Lucy's. Although, Mrs Ferrars runs into some problems at this point, when Robert comes out with that he and Lucy are to be married. Their marriage brings us back to Austen's way to portray expectations contra what is actually happening. No one had expected that Robert would propose to Lucy, but he still did it. This puts Mrs Ferrars in such a position that if she goes through with her threat of disowning her sons due to their improper marriage, she will loose both of them, which eventually makes her accept her sons' partners. • 49. How Did Hilda Doolittle As An Emagist Writer? Along with the National geographic society being founded, 1888 was also the year Hilda Doolittle was born in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. This soon to be Imagist writer was known mainly for her poems. What differentiated her from most other Imagists at the time was her identity a female and bisexual which both at the time were severely oppressed. Along with the political stance, Hilda Doolittle also faced struggles growing up due to being only daughter in her family and her father being a science professor (Hernandez). These conflicts however did not affect her ability to write but are prominent in her writing. Her childhood and the relationships cause her to evolve into an imagist writer by shaping the way she thought of herself and expressing through her writing. Hilda Doolittle's lifestyle and relationship with her family shaped her thinking. Hilda's mother was a Moravian and her father was an Astronomer and a professor (Hernandez). Her mother taught music and painting and was a pianist and she was Hilda's inspiration to be an artist. Her father was a scientist and he actively discouraged her explorations of arts so he tutored her daily but she said that the more he explained, the less she understood (Hilda). He wanted her to be the next Marie Curie and advocated for feminism but only for science. He forbade her from art school and even though her mother was an artist, she was shy and devoted to her husband's work and beliefs. An example used in Poetry Foundation, "Her mother ... • 51. Essay Sense vs Sensibility Often, two people who have endured similar life experiences and share an unmistakable parallel in lifestyles can be viewed as duplicates of one individual. In Sense and Sensibility, the two main characters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood can be seen as two extensions of the same character. The sisters are relatively close in age, grew up with the same social expectations of the same time period and household, and they evidently experienced similar childhood and family trauma and problems. Jane Austen Gender Roles In Jane Austen's novel, Sense and Sensibility, the emphasis on different dominant values rendered a foundational perceiving for audiences as an insight of Georgian Era. • 59. Sense And Sensibility Play Summary My impression of the play Sense & Sensibility adapted by Jessica Swale was that it was almost like a 'soap opera'. There were tons of drama throughout the play and was also was almost two and half hours long. It was based on a family the lives in England from the mid 90's called the Dashwood's. Throughout the play it was mostly based on the struggles that the Dashwood's went through on a daily basis. The main struggle was them losing their father John Dashwood. They lost their castle of a house and almost all of the wealth. Everything went to Mr. Dashwood's half–brother and his wife. Also, the love feuds that went on between Elinor Dashwood and Marianne Dashwood played a huge part of the play. Sense & Sensibility started off with the Dashwood's losing their house and basically all of their money. This caused great anger and fear for the Dashwood family. Before the family had to move out of the house one of the protagonist Elinor Dashwood fell in love with her sister in law's brother Edward. They had to move into their distant relatives the Middleton's family. Their house wasn't anything special and lived in a small town. The other characters were dressed in typical mid 90's England wardrobe with lots of colors and pants. The scenery of the play was based on the screen in the back of the stage. Jane Austen, the author of Sense and Sensibility, does a phenomenal job of showing the world the struggles women faced during that time. • 69. Sense And Sensibility In The Novel By Jane Austen Sense and Sensibility written by Jane Austen is a novel that does not only deal with two sister's love matters, but how two dissimilar personalities respond to society and love. The theme of "society vs. sense" is existed throughout the novel because it is concerned with the ruling of one's feelings, or the incapability to do so. Declaring love for someone, nurturing one's self and not caring what people think is important in expressing this kind of "social duty."(Pam Morris, 43) This kind of theme is always present, with some dramatization, within Emma Thompson's 1995 film adaption. Literary critic Deborah Kaplan argues that Thompson's film adaption demonstrates "harlequinization", where the narrative structure of the "mass–market structure", where a lot of people really like them, it focuses on a hero and a heroin's courtship at the expense of the other characters and experiences. Kaplan is stating that the film is negative because some characters are underrepresented. She's right, but at the same time it is to be expected because it is a film adaption. I argue that Kaplan is right, the film adaption does demonstrate this "harlequinization" to the point where it ignores all the important scenes within the novel such as how the Dashwood sisters are represented, Marianne's rescuers Willoughby and Colonel Brandon in contrast to the novel. With all of Jane Austen's novels, Sense and Sensibility gives the readers an insight of the personal lives of nineteenth century women, Marianne and Elinor Dashwood are the examples of heroines, sisters with dissimilar personalities. Marriage is a way to alter wealth for women, it is always a central theme within Austen's novels. In the novel, the Dashwood women are left poor because the fortunes of their father was inherited by their brother. The women leave their home and move to a home in Devonshire which belongs to John Middleton, who is Mrs. Dashwood's cousin. This is what introduces possible suitors for the two eldest Dashwood sisters, Marianne and Elinor. Edward Ferrars and Elinor fall in love and Marianne falls for John Willoughby. • 73. How Poetry Makes Nothing Happen 1. Introduction W.H Auden famously wrote "poetry makes nothing happen." Do you think this accurately describes the political and social place of poetry in the twentieth century and/or the twenty first century? Explain why you agree or disagree in the case of your chosen poet, justifying your answer with close reference to your poet's work and its reception and interpretation. This essay examines the effects that poetry has on society, both socially and politically. Poetry has been around for centuries, and it is a common misconception that it serves no purpose. One critic in particular, W.H Auden claimed, "poetry makes nothing happen". However poetry awakens the reader's eyes and gives an insight to the society in which we live in today, and which has been before us. As evident in Ezra Pound's work, as he explored the use of imagism to critique modernism and twentieth century, forcing the readers to think more about society as a whole. The purpose of this essay is to show that poetry does make something happen and can have instrumental effects on society, whether it is a poet critiquing society, or simply providing another interpretation. Poetry is a code than needs to be cracked, it is a riddle that makes the reader bring out their true creativity, which is why I disagree with W.H Auden in saying, "poetry makes nothing happen." 2.
