Lovelace s poem To Althea, from Prison expresses two concepts: the impossibility of
imprisoning the mind and therefore the impossibility of repressing one s belief in a cause, or in
this case, a person. The initial lack of explicitness of the meaning of the poem is exemplified by
the mysteriousness of the woman, Althea, who is rather unspecific in description, and ethereal,
described as divine. Whether or not the woman was real, or herself imaginary is unimportant to
the poem, which is all about the lack of division between true reality and reality of the mind. The
juxtaposition between the body and the mind reflects the same conflict within Lovelace himself,
and in fact all Cavalier poets: the altogether real matters of war and politics and the expression of
poetry and imagination.
It is interesting that while the speaker is writing of freedom and the indomitability of the mind,
he describes himself as being tangled to Althea s hair and fetter d to her eye. This is language

I am interested in applying to be the Vice President of the International Student Club because I want
to become proactive about the role I play in creating a wholesome community for international
students on this campus. Given the shifts occurring on campus with respect to international
students in terms of ISC not being very active this academic year, lapse in communication with
exchange students in a structured manner, and the dissolving of International House and
consolidation in South Hall, it has become difficult for international students to find their footing in

Emile Durkheim was born in France in April of 1858 and died in November of 1917. He was

from more of a statistical and analytical method. Suicide was defined a few times throughout the
work, as the definition was changed to consider a perspective that he had not yet taken into
account. A common idea of suicide was a positive and violent action such as a person shooting

Durkheim named suicide as a category that can also cover some instances not usually associated
with suicide. A few examples of that are a soldier going into battle knowing he will be killed, a
martyr that dies for the cause, and a businessman that kills himself after going bankrupt. Most
people would not consider that soldier suicidal nor would they consider the martyrdom a suicide.
However, both of those scenarios include people going into a situation despite the fact that they
know they will die. According to Durkheim (1951), it did not matter if the person just accepted
death as unavoidable or they actually wanted to die because the two scenarios were close enough

was saying that if the person sacrifices their life and gives their soul, the most precious gift they

On the Night of December 2, 1984, there was a horrific accident at the Union Carbide Pesticide
Chemical Factory in Bhopal, India. The factory produced a chemical called methyl isocyanate
(MIC) also know by Union Carbide as Liquid Dynamite . It is an organic compound with the
molecular formula CH3NCO MIC is a highly reactive intermediate chemical used to manufacture
various pesticides. This chemical reacts exothermically with water and produces a poisonous gas
that can be fatal. Carbide s greed for a profit proved to be catastrophic for both Union Carbide and
the town of Bhopal. Carbide reduction of the safety features in the factory resulted in the world s
largest industrial disaster in history. Safety features are in place for the safety of the workers, the

Shakespeare s King Lear fabricated a world of its own, in which distinct virtues and vices were
personified by individuals with diverse points of view. With each conflict in the play, the characters
actions and decisions were parallel to the integrity of their heart and mind, exhibiting the virtue or
vice they represented. With this strategy, Shakespeare shares that with trust should come discretion.

The whole concept of how one person s mental state can influence all those around them was very
interesting to me. Along with that how the four EI domains (Self Awareness, Self Management,
Social Awareness, and Relationship Management) are learned abilities.
For much of my life I thought that these were attributes that you either had or did not have, or
that if they were learned at all it was while you were very young and you were then set for life . I
was glad to read that research shows that these attributes can be learned later in life, that it just takes
more time and more effort.
So, the concept, noted above, that the brain can be reprogrammed to operate differently than it
had been trained to operate was very eye opening to me. That we are not hard wired from birth is
very meaningful to me. It tells me that I can continue to grow as a person and improve myself in
how I deal with others. If I only continue long enough I can and will improve all four areas of EI,
but for me, most importantly Relationship

Another important concept, for me, was that the brain can grow new cells. This indicates that
decline in mental capacities, as we age, is not necessarily inevitable. It also means that we can
