Step 2: Conduct Some Research to Narrow Down Your Topic Consider narrowing the topic to one of the following: • Time Period - 2010s, 2020 • Geographic Location - Canada, Toronto • Population - Age, Race, Gender, Nationality • Event - CoVID-19, Christmas Eve • Aspect - Social, Mental Health, Political Apply answers to the who, what, when, why and where: • Smoking > (Who, What) The negative effects of secondhand smoking on elementary kids. • Climate Change> (Why, How, What) How student advocacy for climate change can make a difference. • Video Games> (What, How) How video games can improve student learning in schools. * Make sure your sources are reliable. How Do I Know If My Topic is Too Broad? • You are finding too much information. • Your topic has a simple answer that could be summarized in 1-2 sentences. • Rule of thumb: If entire books/articles have been written on your topic it is too broad. Step 3: Frame your Topic as an Inquiry Question An inquiry question should be... • Arguable - avoids simplistic and obvious answers. • Complex - avoids yes/no answers and stimulates deep thought responses. • Specific in language - avoids vague or undefined words. • Clear and concise - avoids broad topics that are too big to address within 1 or 2 months.
