Counting things might sound like a trivial thing to do. But counting things consistently at scale can create unique and difficult challenges. At ResearchGate we count things for different reasons. On the one hand we provide numbers to our members to give them insights about their scientific impact and reach. At the same time, we use numbers ourselves as a basis for data-driven product development. We continuously tune our statistics infrastructure to improve our platform, adapt to new business requirements or fix bugs. A milestone in this improvement process has been the strategic decision to move our stats infrastructure from Storm to Flink. This significantly reduced complexity and required resources, including decreasing the load on our database backend by more than 30%. We will discuss the challenges we’ve encountered and overcome on the way, including handling of state and the need for online and offline processing using streaming and batch processors on the same data.
In this talk, we describe the design and implementation of the Python Streaming API support that has been submitted for inclusion in mainline Flink. Python is one of the most popular programming languages for data analysis. Its readability emphasizes development productivity and as a scripting language, it does not require a compilation nor complex development environment setup. Flink already has support for Python APIs for batch programming and unfortunately, the mechanism used to support batch programs (i.e., DataSet APIs) do does not work for Streaming API. We describe the limitations with the batch implementation and provide insights into how we solved this using Jython. We will walk through some of the examples programs using the new Python API and compare programmability and performance with the Java and Scala streaming APIs.

Combining ideas from both Redux and CRDT, Logux is a new tool which replaces AJAX with real-time data in applications, synchronising action logs between the client and server while also providing an offline mode. This approach could significantly simplify application code and bring plug&play support for live updates and offline editing.
