This document was made for the ISGlobal-UB Master of Global Health and gives some tips for creating effective presentations using storytelling techniques.
Great presentations mean less, not more. Make 'em simple and easy to read, and DON'T TREAT YOUR PRESENTATION AS YOUR SCRIPT.
Great presentations aren't made to be read.

Conference presentations are the moment to share your results, and to connect with researchers about future directions. However, presentations are often created as an afterthought and as a result they are often not as exciting as they could be.
In this slidedeck Felienne Hermans shares hands-on techniques to engage an audience.
The talk covers the entire spectrum of presenting: we start with advice on how to structure a talk and how to incorporate a core message into it. Once we have addressed the right structure for a talk, we will work on adding stories and arcs of tension to your presentation. Finally, to really perform as a presenter, we will talk about how slide design and body language can support your presentation.
Transform learning by using multimedia tools to author and publish student content. We’ll walk through samples that can be scaled to any subject matter and grade level. Explore the pedagogy, techniques, and application to content using student-generated digital stories created online. Authentic research, writing, and speaking become transferable 21st century skills.
Resources provided!
Think of the last time you sat in a presentation. Did you find yourself nodding off or were you engaged? Days later, could you recall the primary elements or just a blur of bullet points? As Information Professionals there are many opportunities to meet learning needs, but often we lack the communication skills necessary to deliver them. This session will offer techniques for structuring your talks for the key message, the venue, and most importantly, the audience. Whether you are teaching new students how to use electronic resources or pitching an idea to your supervisor, your attendance ensures a more confident, relaxed approach to delivering presentations and public speaking.
After this session attendees should be able to:
1. Apply the broad, systemic ADDIE method of Instructional Design (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate) to any informational or motivational talk
2. Implement the latest trends in presentation methods after analyzing techniques from modern communications thought-leaders
3. Connect with audience members so that they retain not only the primary message, but see results from your objectives

About 40% of women in developing countries still do not have a skilled birth attendant during childbirth, and less than 40% women receive a postnatal visit. The high percentage of women not receiving the healthcare they need is the reason behind many avoidable deaths and the lack of progress to achieve MDG5.
What is the complex of factors that contributes to this situation? This infographic summarizes the obvious and less-obvious barriers that deter women from accessing maternity care.
ISGlobal has prepared this presentation to briefly explain what "tackling malaria from the perspective of elimination" means. The main points dealt with are:
• Achievements to date and work that remains to be done
• Difficulties associated with eliminating the last remaining infections and the advantages to be gained
• Challenges that lie ahead
• Tools needed
• What “interrupting transmission” actually implies…
115 countries lack data to determine maternal deaths or have no data at all. The lack of vital event data is a major concern that prevents the implemetation of the most adequate programmes and policies to tackle maternal deaths. To make women count, we should first start counting them.

How to Transform your Presentations into Stories
1. How to Transform your
Presentations into Stories
ISGlobal Training 2013-2014
2. Before you start…
think about them!
Adapt your
presentation to
your AUDIENCE.
It’s not the same to talk to a
group of college kids as it is
to a committee of experts.

3. Once you have defined your
target audience…
…structure your talk
Source: web.viu.ca/ba/bearaware/activities_content.html
4. …then all you’ll have to do is join
the dots…
Source: web.viu.ca/ba/bearaware/activities_content.html
…to weave your story
5. Because the structure of a presentation
…is similar to that of a story:
1. Opening
2. Plot
3. Ending
Source: Google Images
7. The hook
Gotcha!
…is an opening idea designed
to surprise and engage your
audience from the outset.

8. The hook
is the equivalent of the
opening sentence
of a story or a novel
“Call
l”

“I ask chil

“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy
dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a
gigantic insect-like creature”
9. A good hook can be…
a sentence…

(among others)
13. Once you’ve got their attention…
it’s time to build your PLOT:
Structure your ideas carefully.
Don’t jump back and forth.
Source: designandconquertheworld.blogspot.com.es
As in a story, all your words
should follow the same path.
14. Your slides
should be simple and legible.
Use big letters that can be
seen from the back of the room.
Don’t go overboard on colors and
effects.

21. Don’t forget about body language
Speak loudly and clearly.
Source: Google Images
If you can, stand and keep
your hands free.
Avoid excessive gesticulation.
22. Use images
that cause an
(emotional) impact
Your audience will associate these
images with your words.
23. And keep an ace up your sleeve
for the ending
«Wow them in the end,
and you got a hit. You
can have flaws,
problems, but wow
them in the end, and
you've got a hit.»
Adaptation.
24. And just a couple of more things:
You never know how you are
going to say something until
you actually say it.
You should be so familiar with
your presentation that you can
give it without notes.

Practise!
25. And what if something goes wrong?
Arrive with
plenty of time

to spare on the day.
Check all your slides on the
computer in the room.
26. And one last thing…your software
There are plenty of
programmes to choose
from.
Choose the one that
best suits your story
(and not the other way round).
