World War I And Its Effects On America
At the time the U.S. entered into World War, it had already been raging for some time. Between the
assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand during the tension between Austria Hungary and Russia
for the sake of dominance, the increasing competition from Japan for Chinese trade, and the
increasingly offensive tactics of Germany concerning the U.S., the American population began to
contemplate whether or not America should get involved, a topic that is still debated to this day.
World War Iand its effects were perceived as both good and bad by different people before,
during, and after the war, interventionists saying it would be beneficial for patriotic and social
aspects of America, and isolationists saying it would be harmful due to a... Show more content on

Another event that bolsters the fact that Americans strongly believed in the power and necessity of
democracy during this time was the Red Scare. This was a short period in which, due to the
popping up of communist ideals in European countries, Americans feared and defended against the
infiltration of communism into the United States, seeking to maintain democracy. The
combination of these beliefs and events show that America was heavily invested in its democratic
ideals and wanted to spread them, encouraging them to enter the war for this cause. Another
reason why Americans wanted to enter the war was due to the fact that Germany was becoming
increasingly aggressive toward the U.S. The sinking of the Lusitania and the interception of the
Zimmermann Telegram, a communication between Germany and Mexico where Germany asked
Mexico to attack the U.S. to distract them in exchange for land, both played a part in rallying
support for entrance into the war. This pro war sentiment was also expressed after the war, as is
clearly evidenced by the support for the Treaty of Versailles, which included the rejected proposal
for the League of Nations, among some people. Some people, such as Herbert Hoover, argue that
the League of Nations is crucial to the economic recovery of Europe from the war and should be
ratified for that reason (Doc 3). He sent this in a letter to Woodrow Wilsona strong advocate for the
League of Nations and the man who

William Bradford And John Smith Essay
Captain John Smith and William Bradford are different in their view of the Native Americans.
When comparing John Smith and William Bradford s work they wrote with different styles, due to
differing audiences and purposes. Smith wrote things based on all the action, promoting himself in
a third person tall tale, in order to establish a higher government position and bring more hard
working Englishmen to the New World. Using detail and supposed thoughts. John Smith s work
can nearly be titled as a noveland has been passed down through newer versions, such as Disney s
Pocahontas or Avatar. To compare, William Bradford s work it probably will never turn into a
movie, as it is more factual and serves as a rather boring account of the... Show more content on

Smith also pens his deed as heroic but one is left to wonder about his compassion for humanity.
William Bradford on the other hand reports many interactions with Indians, though the ones that
talk with him are friendly and speak English. Bradford, most likely due to their kindness, always
respectively calls them Indians and views a few of them as his allies.
However, John and Bradford both agree on one issue: The New World should be inhabited and
settled, and good, hard working men should fill its fertile land. John often dreams of
industrializing America and conquering the Natives; Wherefore, Bradford wants New England to
be a place of refuge for his men.
Finally, when comparing them through their works, one does get a glimpse of these founding
writers. John Smith, at best, was a hero let s say he is your favorite superhero who has major
ego problems and he is someone who lacks the value of human life. Smith also is the admired
leader, gets to be in the middle of all the action, and is enticingly charming to the ladies. Bradford,
however appears to have the opposite personality. Bradford is never seeking thrills or fame from
other people like John is. Bradford s dream was to be a servant leader and teacher in the New

Descriptive Essay On Having A Dog
Dogs become vital to you, they are something you wouldn t ever give up. My dog, Carly has
taught me so many life lessons, even when she can t even talk. Likewise, She has taught to be a
kind, positive, selfless human being. Yes, having a dog may be challenging, stressful work, but in
the end, it s all worth it. Ever since I was a little girl I have always wanted a dog. When I was about
three, my cousins unexpectedly lost their chocolate lab, Bailey. I don t remember Bailey, but I do
remember when they brought home a yellow lab puppynamed Tess. The moment I laid eyes on
Tess, it sparked something inside me and from that point on, I had a desire to one day have my
own dog. I included a dog on my Christmas and birthday lists for five years, but every year I was
left with disappointment. Nevertheless, my parents were warming up to the idea of having a
dog, evaluating different breeds to try and find a fit for our family. Eventually, my parents took us
to look at dogs, but none of them seemed to suit our needs. It was late afternoon on an enjoyable,
mild June day at the baseball field. As we commenced our journey home I realized we were headed
in the wrong direction.
Where are we going? I asked, looking at my parents in confusion.
We are going to look at some puppies, Mom explained excitedly.
Realization dawned on me. We were getting a puppy! What kind of dog are we going to look at? I
questioned with excitement.
A cockapoo, stated Mom anxiously.

Defects Of Defects And Defects
INTRODUCTION A defect can be defined as a deviation from the quality and standard of design,
materials or workmanship specified in a contract . According to the RICS guidance notes on
defects, there are primarily two major kinds of defects. Patent defects and Latent defects. Patent
defects can be easily identified during an inspection but Latent defects are not immediately
obvious, but are discovered at a later date. For example a faulty foundation which is not detected
until it affects the super structure is a latent defect. Construction contracts usually have a defect
liability period agreed. The defects liability period is the period of time during which the
contractor is contractually obliged to repair defects which have appeared in... Show more content on

In order for third party rights to apply, the contract itself must expressly confer the right, setting
out the terms that the third party can rely on, and expressly identify the third party in the
contract This means the contractor can still be found liable for defects several years after
project completion, if these defects are discovered within the statutory limitation periods. This
liability can be as a result of his contractual obligations or based on negligence in tort especially
when the limitation period for bringing an action under contract has passed or if there is no
binding contractual relationship between the occupier and the contractor. These limitation
periods are set out in the Limitation Act 1980. Under the act, the time limit for actions founded
on a simple contract is six years from the date on which the cause of action occurred but twelve
years if created by deed . However, the time limit for actions founded on tort is six years from the
date the cause of action accrued . The Latent damage act provides a limitation period of 3 years
from the date of discovery of the latent defect. The act amends the law about limitation of actions
(Section 14A of the Limitation Act 1980) in relation to actions for damages for negligence not
involving personal injuries; and to provide for a person taking an interest in property to have, in
certain circumstances, a cause of action in respect of negligent

A Brief Biography of Selena
Chris Perez wanted to be a rock star in a Rock n Roll band not a guitar player for a Tejano band. He
lived in San Antonio, Texas and was in a band with Shelly Laras, a singer, and she introduced him
to Selena y los Dinos. In Huston, Texas Shelly s band was playing at a festival and A.B.
Quintanilla, Selenas brother saw Chris playing guitar and liked Chris s guitar skills. During that
time Selena y los Dinos was looking for a new guitarist and A.B. gave Chris his number just so
Chris can call him if he was interested. Chris called A.B and set up a date to play together in the
studio, since that day happened Chris joined los Dinos. Chris was never close to Selena the only
interaction he has with her was on stage when he played the guitar. The most interaction he had
with her was talking to her to know what songs and they were going to be performed. On the trip
back from Acapulco Selena sat next to Chris and held his hand when he was freaking out because
he was on an airplane. Since that moment Chris felt like he had a special connected with Selena.
Once they were on tour they kept a secret relationship going on nobody knew about this
relationship. Little by little everyone in the band started finding out about the relationship except
Selena s father the manager of the band. Chris went through some rough time while he was in the
band which he got in trouble with the law. Abraham, Selena s father found out since Chris told him

Women During The Viking Culture
Women in Viking Culture
When you think of the Vikings, chances are you think of horned helmets, raids, and bloody battles.
But on the other side of the spectrum, there are the women of Nordic culture. Women are mostly
thought of as looking like Viking warriors fighting alongside their men. But that was hardly the
case. In reality, women were important in many other ways. They were treated very differently
than other women in different European cultures at that time. The home lives of the women in
Nordic society were very important to the social acceptance of who they were. Who they were
married to, if they practiced gender roles, and how they kept their family were all factors that make
up how people viewed them. Ideally, women at this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her children would then inherit the dowry as part of their estate ( Women ). Just as the dowry, the
woman did not fully become part of her husband s family when she married. She was a part of
her own family. If her husband mistreated her or her children, or was too lazy to be a sufficient
provider or even insult her family, those were grounds to divorce him. To do this, she must call in
witnesses. She must announce her divorce in front of said witnesses at her front door, then at their
bed ( Women ). At the time of a divorce, the woman would be given back her dowry that was
brought with her at the start of the marriage (The Role of Women). Children automatically stayed
with their mother in case of a divorce. It depended who the older children stayed with according
to status and wealth of the two families. The children still held their rights to inheritance, even
after divorce ( Women ). Divorce is a prime example of how women of this culture had it better
than many other cultures. What was expected of the female children was vastly different than
what was expected of the adults. Unlike most cultures where the boys attend school and the girls
learn housework, it is believed that neither attended school. Instead, boy s learned men s work
and girls did work alongside the females in their life. They learned to cook, garden, and take care
of domestic animals and make clothing. By the time the females are ready to marry at the expected

Cause Of The Revolutionary War
The British are coming, the British are coming! This is a quote often attributed to Paul Revere and
his ride through Lexington and Concord, when in reality it was more so the work of Samuel
Prescott and William Dawes. This is just one of the many events leading up to the Revolutionary
War. The major causes of the Revolutionary War include the Acts passed by Parliament, the
colonists responses and actions to the acts, and the battles and skirmishes between the British and
the colonies.
One of the first events in colonial history to spark the idea of separation from England was the
passing of the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was the first direct tax on the colonists. It required all

Theoretical Importance Of Transportation
IMPORTANCE OF TRANSPORTATION AND 3 THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES Having
outlined the current state of Nairobi s transportation system, this essay will now explain why
public transportation is important and the theoretical debates that surround urban transportation.
One characteristic that most cities have in common is that they have a system of transportation
which allows residents to be mobile. These transportation services expand the lives of its
residents by providing them a way to get opportunities for getting them from place to place
which is especially important for those who do not have access to vehicles (EU EXTRA Project
2001:1) These services are used for a variety of different reasons, including but not limited to:
shopping, commuting to work/school and for leisure (ibid). As a result, it is critical for the urban
community to have a well managed transportation system because it allows people to move about
their daily life in an efficient way. Neoliberal, Marxist and Postcolonial perspectives offer different
views on what effective mass transportation services should look like and how they should be run.
The World Bank (WB), a Neoliberal leaning institution, has been very supportive of public
transportation developments and have promoted their sustainability because they believe that these
systems help connect people to jobs, health services and education in addition to being a driving
force for economic growth (World Bank 2017). As cities are continuing to rapidly

Compare And Contrast Their Eyes Were Watching God
Jada Britt
Professor Lena Ampadu
English 233001
11 May 2015 The Disappointment of Their Eyes Were Watching God This essay will explain
why the movie Their Eyes Were Watching God differed from the book itself from which it was
made. In the book version of Their Eyes Were Watching God the idea of fellowship is portrayed
profusely, but the movie has a different viewpoint. The movie over sexualized the book to make it
seem more appealing to the people, but it makes the movie seem poor of quality. One of the most
important things the movie forgets to present is the coming of age of Janie. By not representing
the characters and the scenes precisely the movie lacks being worthy of such a good book. The
movie is fantastic, the acting is magnificent, and the creator has very good parallels, but the most
important problem is that the movie doesn t illustrate the sense of community that Zora Neal
Hurston represents intensely in her book Their Eyes Were Watching God
. This now becomes a
problem because the book is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would be an irony to say that the authors took creative freedom over the story to make it
sellable. Janie is a good looking African American with good hair and good looks. Hurston then
describes Janie in the male perspective as having Firm Buttocks like she had grape fruits in her
hip pockets; the great rope of black hair swinging to her waist and unraveling in the wind like a
plume; then her pugnacious breasts trying to bore hole in her shirt (Hurston 2). Hurston
describes Janie this way to give light to Janie, even though Janie s looks isn t what s the most
important. The movie inappropriately focuses on the sexuality of Janie. Using Halle Berry as
the actress was a good choice because she s beautiful and she s a great actor. The only problem is
that they over sexualized the plot and used Halle Berry s looks to make the movie seem more

Genetic Interference Morality
Morality Of Genetic Interference Outline
The consequences of an act affect the probability of its occurring again. B. F. Skinner. Chance is
what separates the optimists from the pessimists. An optimist will take chance and do everything
they can to manipulate the odds to be in favor of their point. A pessimist will see chance as an
indestructible blockade. There are twenty three thousand genes in the human genome. Each of these
genes has roughly a five percent chance of becoming defective. This would cause a genetic disease

The two theories I will utilize from this course in order to explain my patient s behavior are the
psychodynamic theory and the systems theory.
Theories to Explain Behavior The psychodynamic theory would explain an individual s personality
in terms of conscious and unconscious forces, such as unconscious desires and beliefs. In the early
20th century, Sigmund Freud proposed the psychodynamic theory consists of the id (accountable
for instincts and pleasure seeking), the superego (attempts to submit to the rules of parents and
society), and the ego (which facilitates between the id and superego according to the stresses of
reality) (Cherry, n.d.). Psychodynamic theories believe childhood experiences shape a person s
personality.
The systems theory would focus on the micorsystems, which are the interpersonal relations
experienced by the developing person. Amy s challenge will also be explained through her
mesosystem, this would be the linkage and processes that take place between two or more setting
containing the developing person (ST article ). Lastly through the systems theory Amy s challenge

Transmission Fluid Leaks
Checking for Transmission Fluid Leaks
If you have any concerns at all about your transmission, the first thing you should do is check for
transmission fluid leaks. Sometimes it s easy to determine that your transmission fluid is leaking,
and sometimes it takes a little bit more meddling to figure out what s going on.
But either way, it s important to know the signs of fluid leaks. With any transmissionproblems, the
earlier you catch and attend to them, the better. Transmission issues can lead to pricey repairs or
even safety hazards. Therefore, make it your business to know the signs of fluid leaks. They can
be an indication of other potentially bigger problems, and even if they aren t in your case, they re
still trouble on their own. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you can t start your car at all, that may mean that you have no transmission fluid left to begin
with. Your car needs to have normal transmission fluid levels to start, so if it can t, that usually
means it s been losing fluid.
в¦ЃThere Are Puddles in Your Driveway
This is one of the most obvious signs of transmission fluid leakage. Not every puddle under your
car is transmission fluid, so know what to look for. Transmission fluid is usually red. It may be
brownish sometimes, if it hasn t been changed for a long time.
In addition, transmission fluid is slick, much like oil, and smells similar to petroleum.
Transmission fluid that hasn t been changed in a while may smell burnt. If you identify a puddle in
your driveway as transmission fluid, you can be pretty certain you have a leak.
в¦ЃThe Puddles Are in the Right Places
If you do have a leak and you think it may be transmission fluid, the next thing you should do is
see where exactly in the car it s coming from. Transmission fluid can drip from the middle and
the front of your car, so if the puddles are forming under those areas, it s probably a fluid leak. Take
a good look at the leak placement and then

Quality And Characteristics Of Different Platforms
Aim of this report is to identify nature, quality and characteristics of different platforms available
such as Peer to Peer, Client Server, and virtualization architecture to establish a communication
network between computers in relation with administration, security and usability. Communication
is the need for all businesses, with the growing number of population the demand to use better
ways to communicate and share resources are increasing, and thanks to the fast emerging new
technologies now organizations are able to share their resources efficiently. Today organizations
can easily established a network of the computers and devices to fulfill their need to share
information, files and resources over network. To do so, there are mainly three platforms available,
each has its own pros and cons. Even after establishment of the network there is also a need of care
so that network keep running smoothly without any problems. To optimize the working of the
network, we need to administrate the network with best practice in place. There are many roles and
responsibilities associated to in maintaining a network such as building, configuring, managing user
s permissions to performing regular test and optimizing network, but with the rise in the shift the

Protagonist If one looks hard enough in a post apocalyptic town they will find someone like
Tessa. In fact everyone is like Tessa, just a normal warring country citizen. The way Tessa is
described you would see some torn clothes and long hair. Like most people in a century long war,
they want peace and harmony.
Antagonist In my story there are absolutely no antagonists. In the history of my book there is a war
that split the world into two sides. They both believed they were doing the right thing. There were
computers that tricked the humans into not fighting, for most of the war. So the story as stupid as it
is, is just a misunderstanding.

The main character learns that everything she has been told is not true. Those who did not adapt in
the story went crazy. These people in the story were forced to live terrible lives for nothing. These
people that started thriving, did not dwell on the past.
Figurative language and humor The Author used figurative language for people to get how major
or little the sentence is, like when it said whispers of excitement float through the crowd. Another
instance was when the book states he could have been an angel or a saint.... which means he is a
good person. The last example, is when it stated the crowd s whispers rippled. These were used to
show importance of these moments.
Social issues Characters are treated very differently because if you are not a high ranking
military official you are poor. The war has gone on for a century and things are not getting any
better. They are devoted to winning the war because neither side looks as if they are going to let
up. They are trying to keep their freedoms. What they should be doing is helping their

Statins Therapy
The nursing problem relating to the proper management of the cardiovascular disease and ensuring

patients having heart and liver diseases in the health centers. Statins are the group of drugs that help
in lowering the levels low density lipoproteinin one s blood. The statins are responsible for blocking
the substances that form cholesterol in the liver(Shehata et al, 2015). The recent incidents related to

Suicide Fast Fact
When I was younger, I grew up with four grandparents who I could spend time with. As I started
to grow older, my grandparents started to deteriorate. My grandmother developed Alzheimer s,
and more specifically dementia. I remember one day at my beach house when I was talking to
her, she asked me who I was because she couldn t remember. She didn t remember her own
grandson. She started to lose all her memory and she had difficulty hearing and speaking. It got
to a point where there was no way of communicating with her, and we wondered if she even knew
who her own family was. She went through this deterioration for upwards of 5 years, and I it got

One argument is that everyone should be able to choose what they do in life. People argue that
they have the right to die. According to a CNN article, titled Physician Assisted SuicideFast Fact,
one particular individual decided that death by dignity was the best choice for her and her family.
Brittany Maynard was a 29 year old women who had a brain tumor, and after countless surgeries,
the cancer kept coming back. She decided that, There is no treatment that would save my life,
and the recommended treatments would have destroyed the time I had left (Maynard, 2016).
Her and her family changed locations to Oregon, since it was one of the only states that
supported physician assisted suicide. She was able to live her remaining weeks in peace and not
have to worry about radiation treatments to try and save her. She chose to be able to end her life
when she wanted to, and that was the most peaceful option for her. In opposition to this, there is
the argument that when a right to die law comes in to play, it turns into a duty. This is explained in
Paul McHugh s Wall Street Journal Article, Dr. Death Makes a Comeback; Legalizing Physician
Assisted Suicide is Receiving Fresh Support, but Doctors Should Think Twice Before Signing on,
which said, when the state sponsored health plan in 2008 denied recommended but costly cancer
treatments and offered instead to pay for less expensive suicide drugs (McHugh, 2015). This
statement says that in Oregon, a state sponsored health plan denied costly cancer treatments
because they would rather take the cheaper route and get suicide drugs. This turns the idea that the
option of physician assisted suicide is forced. The option to either take the pill or get treatment is
taken away when the treatment is not offered. The common ground in this example is that it should

Ethical Dilemma Of Artificial Intelligence
The major ethical dilemma faced in the series Westworld is a problem that we as human will have
to eventually address. The rate at which technology is advancing is incredible and there have been
great strides that have been accomplished when it comes to our progress on Artificial Intelligence.
Therefore, there has been ongoing ethical debate about weather or not humans should ultimately
extend rights to Artificial Intelligenceonce it becomes sentient. Many highly respectable persons,
such as Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, and Steve Wozniak have all voiced their
concerns against Artificial Intelligence; even going as far as saying it could lead to the eventual
demise of all of mankind.
Furthermore, at the International Joint ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only way humans in Westworld were able to justify such treatment of the hosts was to distance
themselves by stating that they were just simply machines who were unable to comprehend their
mistreatment. Theresa confirms this in Season 1 Episode 1 The Original when she remarks,
[Westworld] works because the guests know they re not real .
This mindset ignored the long term affects of the trauma inflicted on the hosts. In an article in
World View, Hutan Ashrafian made an excellent point about holding intelligent machines to the
same standards as human beings because if we were to allow sentient machines to commit injustices
on one another even if these crimes did not have a direct impact on human welfare this might
reflect poorly on our own humanity. That s why Logan s statement about Westworld ability to show

horrific character in the series the Man in Black. Unfortunately, that sort of dark switch in character
is not limited to fiction.
In the Stanford Prison Experiment conducted in 1971 by Philip Zimbardo, it showed how dark of

authority over others. The study subjects, middle class college students, had answered a

How William Harvey Demonstrated Intellectual Honesty in...
Intellectual honesty is an applied method to present and discuss facts in unbiased, fair and open
minded manner. In the seventeenth century, William Harvey published his work The Circulation of
the Blood. His publication became revolutionary not only because of its scientific contributions, but
also because it demonstrated a great example of intellectual honesty, a valuable disposition required
for all scholars and scientists. Through his work The Circulation of the Blood, William Harvey
expressed intellectual honesty in three different ways: how conventional beliefs did not interfere
with his search of truth; how he acknowledged and accepted other relevant publications; and how
he defended his view in an unbiased manner. William Harvey was born in 1578 in Folkenstone,
England. Like many young scholars at the time, he went to Kings College, graduated, and then
enrolled at Italy s famous medical school, University of Padua. As he graduated with high honors,
Harvey also accumulated mixed experiences and knowledge coming from his predecessors and
colleagues. Among such, the teachings of Claudius Galen regarding the hearts circulation proved
most profound and vague to Harvey. According to Galen, A natural spirit promoting growth and
nutrition was added in the liver and carried throughout the body by the veins (Silverman 245).
Galen suggested that all pulmonary artery and veins were centered on the liver. His hypothetical
assumption resulted in a flawed belief about the

Stereotypes In The Film Encounters, By Werner Herzog
Werner Herzog, a well known figure in the world of German cinematography, is accredited for
his creative use of local perspective, to show what he coins as ecstatic truth , as well as his focus
on people with unique dreams, careers, and outlooks. In his documentary Encounters, he explored
the population of the people working and living in Antarctica and tried to figure out why said
people were drawn to such a cold and desolate place. The filmfeatured stock footage with no
narration and one on one interviews with repeated questions (Where are you from? Why are you
here?). The documentary itself began with an introduction about how the film wouldn t be about

In the final few scenes of the film, Herzog and his crew were taken underground to explore
tunnels and caves with things that, when considering the location of Antarctica, shouldn t exist
there. They were shown a frozen riverfish, images of the green that once covered Antarctica, and
flowers. These are seen as things of the past and could be used as an example of how we,
humans, are progressing with a constantly ticking clock that will expire sooner or later to be
taken over by something of the future. Another interesting parallel that was drawn was between
science and religion, which are two things often kept separate. One particular example was when
Herzog likened the silence of the divers before they head into the water to the quiet of priests
heading to mass. This contrast may have been Herzog s way of further proving the uniqueness of
the population occupying Antarctica or of showing why the statement by William Sirsa that they re

Suppose something happens that it was within your power to...
Suppose something happens that it was within your power to prevent? If you didn t have
malicious intent, was it still you fault? Does letting someone die when you know you had the
capability of saving them in turn make you a murderer? All of these are questions that
philosophical thinkers have tried to answer for centuries. The Doctrine of Acts and Omissions
holds that it is morally worse to commit an act that brings about a bad event than it would be
merely to allow the event to take place by not doing anything to prevent its occurrence. In essence,
there is an intrinsic moral difference between acting and the failure to act. In some ways, we bear
more responsibility for what comes about as a result of our doing something than for what... Show

However, and important note is that even though motives are the same, they are extrinsic difference
where the Doctrine speaks about intrinsic differences. Thus, active and passive euthanasia are
morally equivalent and it is not worse to preform active rather than passive euthanasia. Suppose I
want my baby nephew to die and I enter his bathroom with the intent of killing him. In scenario one,
I consciously and intentionally hold his head under the water until he drowns to death. In the second
scenario I walk in on him accidently slip and hit his head on the bathtub. He then goes
unconscious and drowns under water. I watch as this happens, but I don t make the small effort
of picking up his head from under the water. These two actions may seem like they aren t as
morally taxing but since the intentions were the same from the get go, they are in fact morally
equivalent and just as bad. In this case, the act of killing and the allowing the killing to occur are
the same. A pragmatic example of this argument that may help convince you on why acting and
failing to act are morally equivalent is in the world of dating. If someone is in a relationship with
another person and wants to cheat, is the act of pursuing someone and sleeping with them is same
as allowing one to seduce you and you stopping the act from occurring? The motives are the same
in this case, and even if the motives were different, they are extrinsic

Herman Melville s Bartleby the Scrivener Essay
Bartleby The Scrivener In Herman Melville s Bartleby the Scrivener , the author uses several
themes to convey his ideas. The three most important themes are alienation, man s desire to
have a free conscience, and man s desire to avoid conflict. Melville uses the actions of an
eccentric scrivener named Bartleby, and the responses of his cohorts, to show these underlying
themes to the reader. The first theme, alienation, is displayed best by Bartleby s actions. He has a
divider put up so that the other scriveners cannot see him, while all of them have desks out in the
open so they are full view of each other, as well as the narrator. This caused discourse with all of
the others in the office. This is proven when Turkey exclaims, I... Show more content on

The narrator went to great lengths to avoid a confrontation. When Bartleby refused to leave the
office after being fired, the narrator chose to move his office to a different location instead of
removing the eccentric man by force. The narrator informs the reader of this idea when he says,
No more then. Since he will not quit me, I must quit him. I will change my offices. (2422) By
doing so, the narrator displays just how far man is sometimes willing to go to avoid conflict.
The final theme is man s desire to have a free conscience. Melville reveals this theme through the
actions of the narrator as well as the new tenants of the office. The narrator attempts to appease
his conscience by giving Bartleby money above his wages when he fired him. The new tenants
of the office try to put the responsibility of dealing with Bartleby back on the narrator, but they
are denied and eventually have the man removed from the premises by law officers. Herman
Melville uses the actions and reactions of the characters in Bartleby the Scrivener to disclose three
important themes, alienation, man s desire to avoid conflict, and man s desire to keep a free
conscience. In doing so, he gives us an inside look into the workings of the human mind. The reader
is left with the impression that all people, including lawyers, have compassion for other humans,

Don Mclean s Song American Pie
America has and forever will be the ever changing land that accepts all cultures. Every decade in
this country s history has seen immense change brought forth. Change could be seen as good or
bad depending on who it has affected. Changes in the culture of music are pretty common and
rapid. Change in American politics also take place on a daily basis. Changes within the military
again, can be something seen every single year. These changes have the ability to affect the pride
in which Americans are feeling at that specific time period. Don McLean s song, American Pie,
reflects his opinion on the decline of America and its loss of innocence during the 1960s. Don
McLean was born in 1945 in a rather large New York town. His childhood was pretty good as he
had two parents who supported him. McLean was born with asthma which was said to affect his
school work. However, by the age of five he had developed an interest in all forms of musicand
would spend hours listening to the radio and his father s records. (McLean) By the time he was a

Benefits of the Jewish Chicken Soup
Food is only one aspect of cultural tradition, but it is probably one of the most prevalent. Because
of the significance of food in our lives, many ethnic and religious groups incorporate it into special
occasions. Funerals, weddings, birthdays, festivals, fairs, political holidays and religious
celebrations would all loose a bit of their sparkle without the pleasure of food. Various foods are
given symbolic and even transformative connotations. This is a universal truth in most cultures.
A very popular food with cultural significance is chicken soup. It is prepared very differently in
different cultures. From Mexico s chili spiked sopa de Fideos, to China s gingery QiguoJi,
cultures have a love affair with chicken in a pot. In Bulgaria, chicken soup is often seasoned
with lemon juice or vinegar. The Taiwan style of chicken soup includes dried jujube fruits, tea,
and other various herbs. The Columbian version of is called ajiaco and includes sweet corn,
several types of potatoes, avocado, capers, an herb called guascas, and a dollop of cream. Polish
chicken soup is commonly served with fine noodles and sometimes a ground almond broth called
ros贸艂. In the United States and Canada, chicken soup often has noodles or rice. The
Campbell Soup Company coined the phrase chicken noodle soup in the 1930s and it has endured to
this day.
While no single culture can claim chicken soup as exclusively its own, chicken soup is a traditional
dish of the Jewish kitchen. No Shabbat,

The Canyon Of A Green Oasis
The Canyon Within A green oasis lies much closer to us than one might think. Everyone kept
talking about how much different the canyon, or even the outdoors where it is quiet enough to
think. Others might also think that it is just a dark, black forest with either no life or only
dangerous life. Some may also think that it is just a few hills with a couple of pinetrees on them.
Perhaps some may think that it is just a waste of valuable land. If this is the case, one may not
know what they are missing out on. So on a summer day in my late teen years, I decided to go out
and see what all they were talking about. I found out that hikingthrough the various trails in the
Spearfish canyon was going to be extremely treacherous, and yet surprisingly rewarding. Hiking
on some of the more difficult trails in the Spearfish canyon can be a rude awakening to some
beginners. It may also be very dangerous and sometimes even fatal without the right equipment
and safety precautions. For example, I could slip on loose rocks as I climb up a steep hill, or
have to heave myself over large fallen trees and boulders. The higher I get and ascend on the trail,
the steeper it gets and the more things I notice that can go wrong.
Through all of this I got more and more tired. My helpless ankles relying on the sturdy hiking
boots strapped tightly onto both of my feet, and I hope that they do not give out on while I am

Argumentative Essay On Marijuana
Marijuana a drug or elixir of good health.
Marijuana is a very controversial topic today. The United States made it illegal in the mid 1920
and has been illegal ever since until recent times. It has been told that Medical marijuana has
many health benefits and is also proven to help cure some deadly diseases. Using marijuana for
medicinal purposes is not a recent discovery. The use of marijuana dates back nearly 5000 years.
Western medicine embraced its medicinal properties in the mid 1800 s. Physicians have
published more than 100 papers in the western medical literature recommending its use for a
variety of disorders (Urena). India is the world s 2nd largest population with 1.525 billion people
unfortunately a lot of them suffer from cancer and other deadly diseases. In this argumentative

Trifluralin And Photosynthesis Essay
Many past studies have proven that trifluralin productively inhibits root growth in plants.
Researchers have shown that it does this by creating radial enlargement near root tips, which is an
effect of altering the polarity of growth of cortical cells. Many investigations have followed to prove
whether this chemical also has an influence on mitosis. The studies proved that this herbicide
hinders the mitotic process. This study set out to examine this relationship more precisely to
identify whether Trifluralin affects Mitosis during Metaphase.
A trifluralin solution that was 98% pure and Yellow Globe onion bulbs were used to test this
hypothesis. The control solution consisted of equal quantities of methanol and other chemicals in
distilled water. The bulbs were put inside containers filled with distilled water and left to root for

attempted to arrange themselves for metaphase, they were not lined up accordingly. The chromatids
wrapped around one another in a disorderly state. Many different mutations occurred during
metaphase, and the longer the trifluralin treatment was given to the roots, the more cells were stuck
at metaphase. After three hours, the number of cells in anaphase and telophase dropped about 50%.
After 12 hours, the roots with the trifluralin treatment had about 83% of their cells stuck in
metaphase. Interphase and Prophase were undisturbed by the chemical, because even after 12 hours
of treatment you could see cells successfully going through prophase. These results lead to the
conclusion that as soon as prophase ends and the cells begin to move on towards metaphase,
trifluralin prevents mitosis from continuing past

False Memories
Fact vs. Fiction: The Truth About False Memories
Memories are important cognitive processes that are utilized every day. Research indicates that
humans have both true and false memories. The question is: how do they differ? True memory
enables individuals to recall past experiences with little distortion, while false memory allows
individuals to recant situations and occupy any memory gaps with external information in order to
truly believe that an event has occurred. In a day and age where memory distortion or memory loss
is quite common, many people believe that it is quite easy to implant false memories. However,
research has proven quite the opposite. Although it is possible, planting false memories is a

Cryptomnesia is described as when a person thinks he or she has come up with a new idea, yet has
only retrieved a stored idea and failed to attribute the idea to its proper source (Gazzaniga et al.,
2011, p.305). This type of misattribution is contextualized in every day life by occurrences of
unintentional plagiarism. Unintentional plagiarism occurs very frequently and in most instances, is
indistinguishable because it encompasses the unconscious impact of memory.
The third category of misattribution is false recall and false recognition, which is when individuals
falsely recall or recognize items or events that never happened (Schacter, 1999, p.189). Considering
recognition and recall as they pertain to psychology, recognition is described as memories that do
not require a great deal of mental effort to attain information, where as recollections are memories
that are placed in long term storage and require a greater depth of processing. When analyzing
false recognition and false recall, false memories appear to stem from both an encoding and retrieval

Analysis Of A Thousand And One Nights
A Thousand and One Nights is a tale about the over sexed east which is favored by the sexually
repressed west when applied to and analyzed under the lens of Orientalism. This translation of
the text, while not as sexually explicit as Sir Richard Burton s translation, has its fair amount of
sexual promiscuity which paints the middle eastern characters as dishonest, violent, and sexually
deviant. These traits were seen as socially taboo to the west, especially those in Victorian Europe
who helped the tale gain its reputation as a popular exotic story. The two main scenes where
these traits come into play both take place within A Thousand and One Nights frame story with
Shahrayar and Shahzarman. Shahzarman kills his adulterous wife and her lover then leaves to
visit Shahrayar in his kingdom. When Shahrayar s wife and servants are caught in the act they are
killed and Shahrayar vows to kill his future brides on their wedding nights which is when
Shahrazad attempts to bring him to his senses. The two brothers are extremely hot headed and
violent and their wives are plagued by insatiable lust, which plays into the sexually charged
barbarity perpetuated by Orientalism. Throughout this paper I will be using Edward Said s
definition of Orientalism. Said defines Orientalism as the following: Orientalism can be discussed
and analyzed as the corporate institution for dealing with the Orient dealing with it by making
statements about it, authorizing views of it, describing it, by

Science depends on research. Consider our limited opportunities our lives are brief; our vision is
limited; and we can make huge mistakes, when it comes to events we think were before Bible
history. Here are a few examples:
How often the supposed deductions from some scientists are revised or cast aside;
With what readiness the assumed period of the earth s development is from time to time increased
or diminished by millions of years;
How the theories advanced by different scientists conflict with one another,
Considering all this, do we prefer to trace our descent from germs and mollusks and apes when
we could have an infinitely better genealogy: God created man in His own image, in the image of

10 Things Only Saxophone Players Would Understand
This article is dedicated to my fellow musicians who play saxophone, and more specifically to
those who love it. The reasons why we started playing saxophone are endless. Ranging from
because we loved the sound that it created or just because we admired how shiny it was. Whether
you started playing saxophone 50 years ago or yesterday, you are a part of this exclusive group.
Welcome to the family. Deciding to play the saxophone will change your life. There will be
moments when you are playing that you feel so full inside, so content that you feel that all the
world is the way it is supposed to be. You will also endure hardships. It won t always be smooth
jazz all day. Since I have experienced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even if you are still on a Rico two and a half, you are still going to have to give it a generous
amount of your carbon dioxide. To make it through a song, musicians learn how to breathe from
their diaphragm. Although that helps, the song Pomp and Circumstance is going to be the death of
me (saxophone holds tied whole notes for the majority of the song)!
Your Cork Grease Gets Mistaken For Chap Stick
Does this scenario sound familiar? You say, Mom I need chap stick. Mom says, I just saw some in
your room. You reply saying, Uh, that s cork grease. Or how about when you reach your hand back
behind you for your chap stick during band practice, and accidentally grab the cork grease and
carelessly rub it all over your lips. It s ok; they look a lot alike.
Your Reed Defines Your Day
Having a reed crack ruins your day. Reeds are expensive, plus it takes time to break another one
in. The taste of a new reed is not appealing either. To be honest, reeds are the main reason I have
trust issues. When a reed squeaks... that means it basically just gave me permission to hate it.
Also, saying, No sorry, I don t have any reeds left, to a fellow reedless saxophone player is the
biggest lie

The Relationship Between Girl Scout And Girl Scouts And...
Today in the Scouts, boys have more opportunities than girls. This issue is causing upheaval among
equal rights advocates. Due to protests made by these advocates, girls are now able to join the Boy
Scouts, but combining them does not solve the problem. Rather, Girl Scouts should have the same
opportunities as the BoyScouts because of the strive towards equality, scholarship opportunities,
and Title IX. The push for equality is a goal yet to be reached, due to the lack of opportunities for
girls as opposed to boys. When it comes to extracurricular activities, such as sports, jobs, and the
Scouts, girls are unrepresented (Denny 3). Research has proven that in most activities boys
outnumber girls. While the Boy Scouts take adventurous trips over the summer, GirlScouts are
stuck selling cookies in their home town in order to fundraise their own small, summer trip.
These issues should be addressed without the need to combine the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.
Not only should the Girl and Boy Scouts have equal rights, but they should also be able to
partake in the same activities. In today s society, some activities have restricted girls from
participating because they simply do not follow certain gender roles (Rothschild 1). While Boy
Scouts get to go camping and take part in fun community service, Girl Scouts stay in a local area
and sell cookies so that they will have enough money to go on a small trip over the summer. These
girls should be known for their incredible

Organizational Concepts Of Organizational Vocabulary
Organizational Change Vocabulary Increasing my organizational vocabulary is particularly useful
for me given that my organization is in the process of a long term transition due to environmental
changes in moving from a print based business to a digital based business. The company has also
embarked on transformational change starting in 2013 to reduce costs, and increase market share in
emerging markets where the education aged demographics will be growing in the future. The first
change to radically restructure the company from a series of holding companies to one operating
company with centralization of back office systems with shared products that are to be localized
regionally was implemented by the consulting company Deliotte. The company is learning what
does and does not work, and is not revising the organization in response to lessons learned with the
Hay Consulting Group. I reviewed the main change managementmodels to acquaint myself with the
processes both consulting groups have employed, and chose key terms that I have heard during my
experience, or have been introduced to me as part of the course readings. Unfreezing, moving,
refreezing: Lewin s theory involves leadership unfreezing the organizational environment by
causing discomfort for the individuals within the organization to gain acknowledgement and
support for the need for change (Spector, 2013; Zenab Kazmi Naarananoja, 2013). Once
individuals in the organization become aware of the need for

The Most Spectacular Discovery Of Deinococcus Radiodurans,...
The most spectacular discovery about Deinococcus radiodurans, the first poly extremophile
bacterium, is that it has developed an incredible amount of unexplainable resistance to radiation. It
has remarkable DNA repair mechanisms which cannot be explained just by examining the genome
and research seemingly yields no concrete data regarding what infers the resistivity against ionizing
radiation. It can withstand at least a thousand times more radiation than a human can, in addition to
UV radiation, desiccation, cold and acid. It has no known particular natural habitat as it has been
found across a diverse range of environments, including in the Antarctic dry valleys, an environment
on Earth that s thought to closely resemble that of Mars. The microbe contains 4 10 copies of its
genome and although the radiation causes extensive breaks in the genome, the microbe is able to
utilize unique but poorly understood DNArepair mechanisms that ensure reasonable fidelity. The
genome has been sequenced and a protein has been found within its sequence that confers radiation
resistance, RecA. Researchers are looking to take advantage of this protein by genetically
engineering D. radiodurans to function in environmental clean up, to speed up the process as well
as reduce the costs. Future prospects of this bacteriainclude additional selective genetic
engineering to metabolize a range of toxic organic compounds and to assess if life is possible in
space, specifically on Mars. This bacterium

Black Students And Education Inequality
Education inequality continues as more than 140,000 students, predominantly black students, were
kept back in kindergarten in 2012. Black students are more likely to be held back, despite research
showing that holding back children does not benefit them socially or academically. Retention rates
for students increase when they come into their first year of high school. While 12 percent of black
students are held back in ninth grade, the equivalent is just 4 percent of white students (Cook).
African American students are also more likely to drop out before earning a high schooldiploma.
Even when it comes to discipline, Caucasians receive different treatment. Black students are
suspended and expelled at a rate three times higher than white... Show more content on

It is time to take action in order to relieve African American citizens of strife placed upon them
by way of inequality. There have been solutions stated to solve the given problems of lower
education, substandard housing, and disproportionate payment of the African American race as
compared, mainly, to the Caucasian race. As a way to combat lower education, it is
recommended that schools become more diverse, as opposed to always being predominantly one
race. Schools should be integrated with students of all economical and racial backgrounds, as
well as teachers being diverse for students to have an authority figure to which they may relate.
Not only do African Americans of low income need aid in a school setting, but they also need
some aid in the home setting. Many African Americans are living in poverty and to contest the
poverty that may later result in constant disciplinary action or even so far as dropping out of
school, it would be useful for the government and school system to provide more assistance.
Schools should implement extended time meant for unprivileged students to complete schoolwork,
as well as the school board paying for supplies for said students, as the students are not able to
afford them themselves. Finally, African American employees are nont granted the same pay as
their differently raced counterparts. This may be counteracted by the Paycheck,

October Sky
October Sky
Marion Eady
The film October Sky (1999), directed by Joe Johnson is based on a true story of Homer
Hickman ( a coal miners son) who is inspired to build a rocket after the Russian launch of the first
artificial satellite (Sputnik) into orbit. The film definitely focuses on the course theme of being a
social outcast. This is explored in the film through three people, John Hickman (Homers Father), the
town of Coalwood and Mr.Turner (Homers principle).Firstly, John Hickman, father of Homer
Hickman and a coal miner at the Coalwood mines in West Virginia, socially outcasts his son. Why?
Because John doesn t agree with his son building a rocket. This is explored through Homers father
getting in multiple fights with his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Homer wins the school science fair and then gets to go to the National Science Fair the
town of Coalwood was so happy for them. The town of Coalwood was never supportive of Homer
and the boys and that is why they socially out casted Homer and his friends.
Thirdly, Homers principle out casted Homer. Now you may ask, how could a principle socially
outcast their own student. Mr. Turner (Homers principle) socially out casted Homer by not
allowing him to do what he loved. Homer wanted to make a rocket to get a scholarship but the
principle made it so hard on homer. He had Homer arrested because he thought that Homer
started a fire, he didn t allow the boys to work on their rocket at school or make the stuff for the
rocket so that it can fly. It seemed like Mr.Turner didn t want one of his own students to succeed.
But with the help from Mrs. Riley she helped Homer and his friends succeed and she fought
against the principle. Mr.Turner never really stopped socially out casting Homer and his friends. It
really shows how a principle can really put a big impact on one of their students
In conclusion, the film October Sky touches on Homer Hickman s determination to successfully
build and launch his own rocket despite being isolated by his family, friends, schoolmates, school
officials and community. This is shown through John Hickman (Homers father), the town of
Coalwood and Mr. Turner

  • 2. World War I And Its Effects On America At the time the U.S. entered into World War, it had already been raging for some time. Between the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand during the tension between Austria Hungary and Russia for the sake of dominance, the increasing competition from Japan for Chinese trade, and the increasingly offensive tactics of Germany concerning the U.S., the American population began to contemplate whether or not America should get involved, a topic that is still debated to this day. World War Iand its effects were perceived as both good and bad by different people before, during, and after the war, interventionists saying it would be beneficial for patriotic and social aspects of America, and isolationists saying it would be harmful due to a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another event that bolsters the fact that Americans strongly believed in the power and necessity of democracy during this time was the Red Scare. This was a short period in which, due to the popping up of communist ideals in European countries, Americans feared and defended against the infiltration of communism into the United States, seeking to maintain democracy. The combination of these beliefs and events show that America was heavily invested in its democratic ideals and wanted to spread them, encouraging them to enter the war for this cause. Another reason why Americans wanted to enter the war was due to the fact that Germany was becoming increasingly aggressive toward the U.S. The sinking of the Lusitania and the interception of the Zimmermann Telegram, a communication between Germany and Mexico where Germany asked Mexico to attack the U.S. to distract them in exchange for land, both played a part in rallying support for entrance into the war. This pro war sentiment was also expressed after the war, as is clearly evidenced by the support for the Treaty of Versailles, which included the rejected proposal for the League of Nations, among some people. Some people, such as Herbert Hoover, argue that the League of Nations is crucial to the economic recovery of Europe from the war and should be ratified for that reason (Doc 3). When comparing John Smith and William Bradford s work they wrote with different styles, due to differing audiences and purposes. Smith wrote things based on all the action, promoting himself in a third person tall tale, in order to establish a higher government position and bring more hard working Englishmen to the New World. Using detail and supposed thoughts. John Smith s work can nearly be titled as a noveland has been passed down through newer versions, such as Disney s Pocahontas or Avatar. Smith also pens his deed as heroic but one is left to wonder about his compassion for humanity. William Bradford on the other hand reports many interactions with Indians, though the ones that talk with him are friendly and speak English. Bradford, most likely due to their kindness, always respectively calls them Indians and views a few of them as his allies. However, John and Bradford both agree on one issue: The New World should be inhabited and settled, and good, hard working men should fill its fertile land. John often dreams of industrializing America and conquering the Natives; Wherefore, Bradford wants New England to be a place of refuge for his men. Finally, when comparing them through their works, one does get a glimpse of these founding writers. John Smith, at best, was a hero let s say he is your favorite superhero who has major ego problems and he is someone who lacks the value of human life. Smith also is the admired leader, gets to be in the middle of all the action, and is enticingly charming to the ladies. Bradford, however appears to have the opposite personality. Likewise, She has taught to be a kind, positive, selfless human being. Yes, having a dog may be challenging, stressful work, but in the end, it s all worth it. Ever since I was a little girl I have always wanted a dog. When I was about three, my cousins unexpectedly lost their chocolate lab, Bailey. I don t remember Bailey, but I do remember when they brought home a yellow lab puppynamed Tess. The moment I laid eyes on Tess, it sparked something inside me and from that point on, I had a desire to one day have my own dog. I included a dog on my Christmas and birthday lists for five years, but every year I was left with disappointment. Nevertheless, my parents were warming up to the idea of having a dog, evaluating different breeds to try and find a fit for our family. Eventually, my parents took us to look at dogs, but none of them seemed to suit our needs. It was late afternoon on an enjoyable, mild June day at the baseball field. As we commenced our journey home I realized we were headed in the wrong direction. Where are we going? I asked, looking at my parents in confusion. We are going to look at some puppies, Mom explained excitedly. Realization dawned on me. We were getting a puppy! What kind of dog are we going to look at? I questioned with excitement. According to the RICS guidance notes on defects, there are primarily two major kinds of defects. Patent defects and Latent defects. Patent defects can be easily identified during an inspection but Latent defects are not immediately obvious, but are discovered at a later date. This liability can be as a result of his contractual obligations or based on negligence in tort especially when the limitation period for bringing an action under contract has passed or if there is no binding contractual relationship between the occupier and the contractor. • 9. Theoretical Importance Of Transportation IMPORTANCE OF TRANSPORTATION AND 3 THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES Having outlined the current state of Nairobi s transportation system, this essay will now explain why public transportation is important and the theoretical debates that surround urban transportation. One characteristic that most cities have in common is that they have a system of transportation which allows residents to be mobile. These transportation services expand the lives of its residents by providing them a way to get opportunities for getting them from place to place which is especially important for those who do not have access to vehicles (EU EXTRA Project 2001:1) These services are used for a variety of different reasons, including but not limited to: shopping, commuting to work/school and for leisure (ibid). As a result, it is critical for the urban community to have a well managed transportation system because it allows people to move about their daily life in an efficient way. Neoliberal, Marxist and Postcolonial perspectives offer different views on what effective mass transportation services should look like and how they should be run. The World Bank (WB), a Neoliberal leaning institution, has been very supportive of public transportation developments and have promoted their sustainability because they believe that these systems help connect people to jobs, health services and education in addition to being a driving force for economic growth (World Bank 2017). One of the most important things the movie forgets to present is the coming of age of Janie. By not representing the characters and the scenes precisely the movie lacks being worthy of such a good book. This statement says that in Oregon, a state sponsored health plan denied costly cancer treatments because they would rather take the cheaper route and get suicide drugs. This mindset ignored the long term affects of the trauma inflicted on the hosts. In the seventeenth century, William Harvey published his work The Circulation of the Blood. His publication became revolutionary not only because of its scientific contributions, but also because it demonstrated a great example of intellectual honesty, a valuable disposition required for all scholars and scientists. Through his work The Circulation of the Blood, William Harvey expressed intellectual honesty in three different ways: how conventional beliefs did not interfere with his search of truth; how he acknowledged and accepted other relevant publications; and how he defended his view in an unbiased manner. William Harvey was born in 1578 in Folkenstone, England. Like many young scholars at the time, he went to Kings College, graduated, and then enrolled at Italy s famous medical school, University of Padua. As he graduated with high honors, Harvey also accumulated mixed experiences and knowledge coming from his predecessors and colleagues. Among such, the teachings of Claudius Galen regarding the hearts circulation proved most profound and vague to Harvey. According to Galen, A natural spirit promoting growth and nutrition was added in the liver and carried throughout the body by the veins (Silverman 245). Another interesting parallel that was drawn was between science and religion, which are two things often kept separate. One particular example was when Herzog likened the silence of the divers before they head into the water to the quiet of priests heading to mass. Does letting someone die when you know you had the capability of saving them in turn make you a murderer? All of these are questions that philosophical thinkers have tried to answer for centuries. The Doctrine of Acts and Omissions holds that it is morally worse to commit an act that brings about a bad event than it would be merely to allow the event to take place by not doing anything to prevent its occurrence. In essence, there is an intrinsic moral difference between acting and the failure to act. In some ways, we bear more responsibility for what comes about as a result of our doing something than for what... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, and important note is that even though motives are the same, they are extrinsic difference where the Doctrine speaks about intrinsic differences. Thus, active and passive euthanasia are morally equivalent and it is not worse to preform active rather than passive euthanasia. Suppose I want my baby nephew to die and I enter his bathroom with the intent of killing him. In scenario one, I consciously and intentionally hold his head under the water until he drowns to death. In the second scenario I walk in on him accidently slip and hit his head on the bathtub. He then goes unconscious and drowns under water. I watch as this happens, but I don t make the small effort of picking up his head from under the water. These two actions may seem like they aren t as morally taxing but since the intentions were the same from the get go, they are in fact morally equivalent and just as bad. In this case, the act of killing and the allowing the killing to occur are the same. A pragmatic example of this argument that may help convince you on why acting and failing to act are morally equivalent is in the world of dating. Analysis Of A Thousand And One Nights A Thousand and One Nights is a tale about the over sexed east which is favored by the sexually repressed west when applied to and analyzed under the lens of Orientalism. This translation of the text, while not as sexually explicit as Sir Richard Burton s translation, has its fair amount of sexual promiscuity which paints the middle eastern characters as dishonest, violent, and sexually deviant. These traits were seen as socially taboo to the west, especially those in Victorian Europe who helped the tale gain its reputation as a popular exotic story. The two main scenes where these traits come into play both take place within A Thousand and One Nights frame story with Shahrayar and Shahzarman. Shahzarman kills his adulterous wife and her lover then leaves to visit Shahrayar in his kingdom. When Shahrayar s wife and servants are caught in the act they are killed and Shahrayar vows to kill his future brides on their wedding nights which is when Shahrazad attempts to bring him to his senses. The two brothers are extremely hot headed and violent and their wives are plagued by insatiable lust, which plays into the sexually charged barbarity perpetuated by Orientalism. Rather, Girl Scouts should have the same opportunities as the BoyScouts because of the strive towards equality, scholarship opportunities, and Title IX. The push for equality is a goal yet to be reached, due to the lack of opportunities for girls as opposed to boys. When it comes to extracurricular activities, such as sports, jobs, and the Scouts, girls are unrepresented (Denny 3). Research has proven that in most activities boys outnumber girls. While the Boy Scouts take adventurous trips over the summer, GirlScouts are stuck selling cookies in their home town in order to fundraise their own small, summer trip. These issues should be addressed without the need to combine the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Not only should the Girl and Boy Scouts have equal rights, but they should also be able to partake in the same activities. In today s society, some activities have restricted girls from participating because they simply do not follow certain gender roles (Rothschild 1). While Boy Scouts get to go camping and take part in fun community service, Girl Scouts stay in a local area and sell cookies so that they will have enough money to go on a small trip over the summer. These girls should be known for their incredible ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Organizational Concepts Of Organizational Vocabulary Organizational Change Vocabulary Increasing my organizational vocabulary is particularly useful for me given that my organization is in the process of a long term transition due to environmental changes in moving from a print based business to a digital based business. The company has also embarked on transformational change starting in 2013 to reduce costs, and increase market share in emerging markets where the education aged demographics will be growing in the future. The first change to radically restructure the company from a series of holding companies to one operating company with centralization of back office systems with shared products that are to be localized regionally was implemented by the consulting company Deliotte. The company is learning what does and does not work, and is not revising the organization in response to lessons learned with the Hay Consulting Group. I reviewed the main change managementmodels to acquaint myself with the processes both consulting groups have employed, and chose key terms that I have heard during my experience, or have been introduced to me as part of the course readings. Unfreezing, moving, refreezing: Lewin s theory involves leadership unfreezing the organizational environment by causing discomfort for the individuals within the organization to gain acknowledgement and support for the need for change (Spector, 2013; Zenab Kazmi Naarananoja, 2013). Once individuals in the organization become aware of the need for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. The Most Spectacular Discovery Of Deinococcus Radiodurans,... The most spectacular discovery about Deinococcus radiodurans, the first poly extremophile bacterium, is that it has developed an incredible amount of unexplainable resistance to radiation. It has remarkable DNA repair mechanisms which cannot be explained just by examining the genome and research seemingly yields no concrete data regarding what infers the resistivity against ionizing radiation. It can withstand at least a thousand times more radiation than a human can, in addition to UV radiation, desiccation, cold and acid. It has no known particular natural habitat as it has been found across a diverse range of environments, including in the Antarctic dry valleys, an environment on Earth that s thought to closely resemble that of Mars. The microbe contains 4 10 copies of its genome and although the radiation causes extensive breaks in the genome, the microbe is able to utilize unique but poorly understood DNArepair mechanisms that ensure reasonable fidelity. The genome has been sequenced and a protein has been found within its sequence that confers radiation resistance, RecA. Researchers are looking to take advantage of this protein by genetically engineering D. radiodurans to function in environmental clean up, to speed up the process as well as reduce the costs. Future prospects of this bacteriainclude additional selective genetic engineering to metabolize a range of toxic organic compounds and to assess if life is possible in space, specifically on Mars. • 44. Black Students And Education Inequality Education inequality continues as more than 140,000 students, predominantly black students, were kept back in kindergarten in 2012. Black students are more likely to be held back, despite research showing that holding back children does not benefit them socially or academically. Retention rates for students increase when they come into their first year of high school. While 12 percent of black students are held back in ninth grade, the equivalent is just 4 percent of white students (Cook). African American students are also more likely to drop out before earning a high schooldiploma. Even when it comes to discipline, Caucasians receive different treatment. Black students are suspended and expelled at a rate three times higher than white... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is time to take action in order to relieve African American citizens of strife placed upon them by way of inequality. There have been solutions stated to solve the given problems of lower education, substandard housing, and disproportionate payment of the African American race as compared, mainly, to the Caucasian race. As a way to combat lower education, it is recommended that schools become more diverse, as opposed to always being predominantly one race. Schools should be integrated with students of all economical and racial backgrounds, as well as teachers being diverse for students to have an authority figure to which they may relate. Not only do African Americans of low income need aid in a school setting, but they also need some aid in the home setting. Many African Americans are living in poverty and to contest the poverty that may later result in constant disciplinary action or even so far as dropping out of school, it would be useful for the government and school system to provide more assistance. Schools should implement extended time meant for unprivileged students to complete schoolwork, as well as the school board paying for supplies for said students, as the students are not able to afford them themselves. Finally, African American employees are nont granted the same pay as their differently raced counterparts. This may be counteracted by the Paycheck, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. October Sky October Sky Marion Eady The film October Sky (1999), directed by Joe Johnson is based on a true story of Homer Hickman ( a coal miners son) who is inspired to build a rocket after the Russian launch of the first artificial satellite (Sputnik) into orbit. The film definitely focuses on the course theme of being a social outcast. This is explored in the film through three people, John Hickman (Homers Father), the town of Coalwood and Mr.Turner (Homers principle).Firstly, John Hickman, father of Homer Hickman and a coal miner at the Coalwood mines in West Virginia, socially outcasts his son. Why? Because John doesn t agree with his son building a rocket. This is explored through Homers father getting in multiple fights with his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Homer wins the school science fair and then gets to go to the National Science Fair the town of Coalwood was so happy for them. The town of Coalwood was never supportive of Homer and the boys and that is why they socially out casted Homer and his friends. Thirdly, Homers principle out casted Homer. Now you may ask, how could a principle socially outcast their own student. Mr. Turner (Homers principle) socially out casted Homer by not allowing him to do what he loved. Homer wanted to make a rocket to get a scholarship but the principle made it so hard on homer. He had Homer arrested because he thought that Homer started a fire, he didn t allow the boys to work on their rocket at school or make the stuff for the rocket so that it can fly. It seemed like Mr.Turner didn t want one of his own students to succeed. But with the help from Mrs. Riley she helped Homer and his friends succeed and she fought against the principle. Mr.Turner never really stopped socially out casting Homer and his friends. It really shows how a principle can really put a big impact on one of their students In conclusion, the film October Sky touches on Homer Hickman s determination to successfully build and launch his own rocket despite being isolated by his family, friends, schoolmates, school officials and community.
