Technology How To Tips & Tricks
With iOS 14, the possibilities of customizing your home screen icons are endless.
You can change the app icons on your iPhone to match your mood or personality.
One way people customize their device is by choosing a set of images they are in
love with and then finding other icons that fit in with their chosen images.
If you would like to customize your icons, start by deciding how many you would
want to do. Find enough pictures that will work for the different icons and then
follow these instructions on how to customize them. It’s a tedious and time-
consuming process, but with a little patience, you can have your own customized
home screen on your iPhone.
Step 1
Launch the Shortcuts app. It’s pre-installed on your phone; if you can’t find it, you
might need to swipe left until you find the App Library and type “Shortcuts” into the
top search bar.
Step 2
Tap the plus icon at the top-right
corner of the Shortcuts app.
Step 3
On the New Shortcut page, tap the
Add Action button.
Step 4
I’m sure you’ll have a lot of fun trying
new things in Shortcuts. But now we
want to switch app icons. In the top
search bar of the Suggestions page,
type “Open app” to find an action that
opens an app.
Step 5
Tap Open App from the list of actions
in the search results.
Step 6
Then tap on the word Choose in the
Scripting section.
Step 7
When you arrive on the page, you’ll
see the list of apps. Pick whichever
app you want to create a shortcut for.
Step 8
You’ll be taken back to the New
Shortcut page. Under Scripting, the
name of the app now appears. Tap the
three-dot icon near the top right
corner.
Step 9
From here, select Add to Home
Screen.
Step 10
To name your shortcut, tap the X to
the right of the New Shortcut and
replace it with a new name. If it’s not
the app’s name, you should probably
make it something memorable.
Step 11
Then tap the shortcut icon.
Step 12
Tap on Choose Photo.
Step 13
Select the desired app icon. There are
a bunch of sources for icons online,
but if you’re artistic or ambitious, you
can make your own! Once you save
them to Photos, you can use any icon
you want.
Step 14
To size the image, you can pinch and
pull to zoom in or out until it fits the
way you want. Once you’re done, tap
Choose in the lower-right corner.
Step 15
Then tap the Add button.
Step 16
When you add an app shortcut to your
iPhone, a banner will pop up with a
message telling you that the shortcut
was added. After that, closeout of the
Shortcuts app and view your Home
screen to see your new icon.
To change the icons of other apps, you just need to repeat this process for each
app you wish to change. You can also change the ones on your Dock, which is the
bar at the bottom of your screen.
It’s time to let go of the old icon! If you already had the app on your home screen,
you will now have two icons. To keep just your newly created icon, move the old
one into your App Library, don’t delete it.
