Bradford Wilkins, VP, Talent Management, Adcap
Identifying and developing top talent is a consistent struggle for organizations both large and small. Many companies invest heavily in the training and development of their employees, but what would be the return on investment if companies leveraged apprenticeships—with a modern twist, of course—executed through an integrated acquisition, development, and succession plan? That is what Adcap Network Systems, a leading Cisco integrator in the Southeast, did by creating its sales and technical apprentice programs, which resulted in a 34 percent revenue increase in the program's first year and 64 percent increase in the second. In this high-energy session, Brad Wilkins will share the strategic and tactical tools necessary to create an entry-level sales apprentice program, which you can use in your organization to successfully identify and develop superstar sales reps while increasing revenue.

industries than uncertified people.
• How do you tap into the opportunities that certifications create.
• Are you positioning yourself properly for cutting a slice out of the
pie.
• As a trainer, I come across people that get certified and do
absolutely nothing with the certification years later.

out to do.

11. Overview contd.
• I feel sorry for the person who can’t get genuinely
excited about his work. Not only will he never
be satisfied, but he will never achieve anything
worthwhile.
— Walter Chrysler
www.ritetracconsult.com.ng
11
12. Your Why?
• Why did you choose to get certified? {Attendees respond}
• What is your Vision and Big Picture and where does this
certification{s} come in? Create a Vision Board for your career
journey! Where do you want to see yourself in 5 years,10 years,15
years e.t.c
• What type of problems do you want to solve?
• Research your options before deciding on a particular certification
route.
www.ritetracconsult.com.ng
12
13. Look for Mentoring/Coaching
• Learning is an active process. We learn by doing. Only
knowledge that is used sticks in your mind. — Dale Carnegie
• A fallacy I see among some professionals is to think that once you
are certified you now know everything about the industry you are
working in.
• You will need to actively seek out experts in your field and engage
with them daily to learn from them and build up your real-world
knowledge.
• Mentoring/Coaching can be done formally or informally, physically
or virtually. Find out what works best for you!
www.ritetracconsult.com.ng
13
14. Networking Tips!
• Networking is key to increasing your networth
• Who do you hang with?
• Where do you hang out?
• Ensure you are connecting regularly with industry players via your
leisure activities-Football, golfing, tennis, swimming etc Attend
networking meetings, seminars, webinars, conferences,
congresses etc
• Step out of your comfort zone and connect with more people
regularly.
www.ritetracconsult.com.ng
14
15. Contd.
• Only 5 to 25 percent of jobs are advertised, so you can
find out about all the unadvertised openings only through talking to as many
people as possible and telling them you are looking for a job.
• Don't go anywhere without copies of your resume and business cards or
networking cards. You
can keep your resume in your car or briefcase, but be sure you can access it
easily if you meet
someone who could pass your resume along to a hiring manager.
• Do come up with a system for organizing your network contacts, whether a
spreadsheet on your
computer, a file box of index cards, a three-ring binder, or whatever works for
you.
www.ritetracconsult.com.ng
15
16. How to create opportunities with your
certifications
• Yes you are certified. How do you create opportunities with it? Do you know you can
also Interrupt your industry with anything that presents a solution to a pain people
complain about in that industry.
Steps to follow includes:
• Review the type of job or entrepreneurial pursuit you want to carry out
• List out 20-30 companies you want to target and run a background check on them
• Update your profile/c.v both online and offline to match the new opportunities you
may be seeking. Think Linkedin. Recruiters are always hiring and on the look out
there.
• Email these organizations and spell out clearly what value you will bring to the
table
• Talk to people in your network also{word-of-mouth}
www.ritetracconsult.com.ng
16
17. Contd.
• Beyond looking for a job think of how you want to personally add
value to this industry.
• Do you have a flair of writing?-Create a blog, write a book,
contribute to a newspaper column etc
• Do you have a flair for speaking? Give presentations and speeches
at conferences, seminars and workshop etc
• Do you have a flair for teaching? Engage in free PRO BONO services
with organizations that offer such services and hone your
skills, later you can charge a fee for the time spent
www.ritetracconsult.com.ng
17
18. Contd.
• Skills Audit: Write down every skill you ‘think’ you are good at? Then
narrow it down to 3 skills you think you are good at or could be great at.
• What skills are you certified in? and which do you need to get urgently to
fit into your plans.
• In your every day job (even if you hate your job) what particular tasks
do you do well? For example, you are an analyst; you hate research but
you like building business models.
• What problems do your friends call you to solve?
• What are the 10 things you do every day to improve your mastery in
these skills? For example, research, courses, mentoring, understudy
someone who does what you want to do, taking out 2 hours a day to

20. Smart techniques for your job hunt
• Always have your Elevator Speech ready, yes this is not only for business owners. You
should be able to explain in 1 sentence to someone what exactly you offer and what
problems you solve.
• What is your next job and what will the résumés of the competitors for that job look like?
Do you need “digital” on your résumé? Do you need “data science” or some other crossover
job that bridges the gap between the traditional way your job function has been done and the
way it is done (or going to be done) at your next job?
• Create an online resume that stands out using https://www.visualcv.com/so that
recruiters can access your C.V at their own time and contact you. Employers spend on
average 6 seconds reviewing each resume. A resume that grabs their attention is the
difference between an interview and the recycling bin. Create a resume that stands out.
• Create your own body of work. Start blogging. Create a body of knowledge that sets you
apart from your peers as an expert in your area. Post a minimum of once weekly. The
quality of your writing is more important than the quantity of posts. Take the most
common problems faced by the people who might hire you and demonstrate (through
your writing) that you are the best person to help solve them.
www.ritetracconsult.com.ng
20
21. QUOTE
• Your earning ability is largely determined by the perception of
excellence, quality, and value that others have of you and
what you do. The market only pays excellent rewards for
excellent performance. It pays average rewards for average
performance, and it pays below average rewards or
unemployment for below average performance.
