This document contains slides from a seminar on management skills and personal development. It instructs students to treat 2021 as a year of asset creation by developing either a Kickstarter-style project or entrepreneurial business proposal. It explains that these projects will make up 25% of students' individual portfolios. The slides provide guidance on these projects and developing job application materials like CVs, cover letters, and evidence of skills. They also share advice for navigating tough job markets, including cultivating strengths, adapting, sharpening skills, and thinking like an entrepreneur.

Congratulations Graduate! Eleven Reasons Why I Will Never Hire You.Mark O'Toole
Over the past 20 years, I’ve been in hiring roles and have received thousands of resumes from new college graduates. I’ve interviewed many for real jobs and done my share of informational interviews. Sometimes I’ve hired people into entry-level positions. More often though, I haven’t.
Those who did not get the job were sometimes just not the right fit. Other times, they were trumped by a more impressive candidate or victim to some other random event mostly out of their control.
Too many had the background to make the cut or at least garner a second interview. But disastrous interviewing skills brought you down.
Here are my top reasons why I will never hire you.

Design and Data Processes Unified - 3rd Corner ViewJulian Jordan
In this presentation (given in early 2020) I explain that to build digital products, data analysts/scientists and designers need to leverage each other’s processes and work as a unit.
I introduce the problem solving approach of data analysts/scientists and designers as well as how to combine these approaches. Additionally, I explain how mental models and algorithms, while associated with design and data science, respectively, are similar ways to represent phenomena and questions about them.

Managing projects effectively has become essential in every organisation large or small. The uncertainties of the world business economy, rapidly changing technology, and the intensifying focus on sustainability has driven many organisations to develop specific methods for managing projects and to seek highly qualified and competent people to manage those projects. These driving factors require today’s project managers to accept and adapt to change, lead diverse teams, act as ambassadors for their organisations and deal with a multitude of challenging project stakeholders.
It is clear that Project managers are placed in a unique position. They must balance their roles as leader and manager, interface with multiple types of stakeholders, are often the "face" of their organisation to its customers, and must deal with a seemingly unending stream of challenges to be successful. These challenges and the ability to address them require the project manager to maintain awareness of personal brand of and the impact it will have on project assignments, career opportunity, and the willingness of project teams to work for and support the project manager. As the profession of project management evolves and the demand for competent and value driven project managers increases, personal brand and reputation have become major factors in the criteria used to select and assign people to project leadership positions.
Indispensable Factors
The project manager must develop skills and competencies in several areas to be considered for an assign. In addition there are 4 major factors a project manager must address and continue to develop:
Accomplishability: your ability to achieve and deliver valued results.
Value/cost: the value delivered perception relative to the cost.
Supply/Demand: the market dynamics of your position, skills, etc.
Likeability: how others perceive you.
This presentation addresses the importance of the professional project manager in today’s business environment and the need for the project manager to continually enhance existing skills, adapt to a changing environment, and become a “go to” person in the organisation. Emphasis is placed on understanding the business needs of an organisation, clearly and visibly creating value from a client and supplier view point, and continually developing and managing personal brand.

How To Deal With Disruption and How To Thrive In A Disruptive AgeFahri Karakas
We live in interesting and accelerated times. No professional today, whether in the public or private sector, can afford to be unaware of the pace of changes surrounding them. The pace of business change happening around us is relentless. The global forces of competition, innovation, and new technologies are creating new markets while eliminating others.
Multidimensional technological forces involving automation, 3D printing, augmented reality, machine learning, Industry 4.0, internet of things, and blockchain are rapidly transforming the future of work, organizations, and jobs.
We are at the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution. Developments in machine learning, robotics, nanotech, biotech, and 3D printing are all building on and amplifying one another. Technology is disruptive and it keeps transforming workplaces, business practices, and work processes. Companies are trying hard to survive — the only way to survive is to adapt, change, and innovate fast.
Companies are hungrier for smart ideas and innovations than ever before because they know they will go extinct unless they learn, improve, evolve, accelerate, and create constantly.
89% of Fortune 500 companies from 1955 are not on the list in 2014. The average age of a company listed on the S&P 500 was 67 years old in the 1920s. Right now this age is 15 years only and it keeps going down. In 2028, 40% of all S&P 500 companies are expected to disappear from this list. Similarly, 75% of S&P 500 firms are estimated to be replaced within 15 years.
In 1996, Kodak had nearly 150 thousand employees and $28 billion market cap. In 2008, the whole market was gone. The invention of digital cameras eliminated traditional camera businesses. A company that is not trying to disrupt itself is destined to be disrupted.
We are experiencing a digital revolution and the industrial paradigm is over. Mass production is becoming obsolete and 3D printers are replacing factories. Companies work in virtual networks and remote work is the order of the day.
Products are bought on demand and they are customized by default. We do not need huge scales of economy, organization charts, hierarchies, factories, standardized exams, or large production floors anymore.
We do not need cable TV, mass-market, and broadcast advertising. We are now experiencing a borderless, democratized, digital world where each individual can have a huge impact.
We can now create our own game in this world. We can design games, create our own blogs or podcasts or YouTube channel or raise funds on Kickstarter. We can write a book and explain ourselves to the world. We can create fresh and exciting digital products (training, courses, etc.) We live in a world where ideas can change people’s lives. This means all of us can create our own game.
It is impossible to imagine that the skills needed at work will remain the same in the new decade. The world is changing fast and we need to learn, re-invent, and disrupt ourselves every day.

Robots and Machines Are Coming! How To Be Competitive and Adaptive In The Age...Fahri Karakas
Creativity is no longer a luxury. It is a critical survival skill that we need to adapt to rapid changes, solve complex problems, imagine new possibilities, and navigate uncharted waters ahead of us. In this lecture, we learn and practice creativity through a workshop titled "Improvised Lives".
Improvised lives are lives defined by a sense of adventure, curiosity, exploration, and spontaneity. Improvised living requires a playful mode of continuous learning, intense curiosity, embracing chaos and uncertainty, thinking and problem-solving beyond borders, experimenting and making mistakes, and acting as an entrepreneur. In this workshop, you have opportunities to experiment with automated writing, doodling, drawing, ideating, imagining, and creating techniques.
In addition, we have about 20 mini-puzzles to solve. We cover a wide range of topics ranging from Oscars to celebrities, from vulnerability to humor, and from wellness to fashion. Finally, we have a mini-workshop on future generations (Alpha generation in particular), explore the biggest challenge facing them (climate emergency), and discuss the number one mental problem plaguing the youth of today (climate anxiety). After we give a nod to Greta Thunberg, we turn to another futurist and visionary who has set one of the most challenging and ambitious goals for himself: Elon Musk aspires to send 1 million people to Mars by 2050. We finish the lecture with a mini-workshop on "Life and Employability on Mars", where we learn surprising facts about this red planet, including the fact that creativity indeed will be a surviving skill on this planet.

Lectures 21 and 22 - Wrapping Up the Semester.pptxFahri Karakas
I go over my journey of asset creation this semester.
I have made progress on my 3 books this semester and share you the contents of these 3 books:
Squash Book
99 Creative Adventures Book
The Cube Book
I also provide a review of our topics:
The Rise of China
Project Guidance
Creativity Workshop
Adventures in Asset Creation
A4 Stationery Innovations
In this workshop, I introduce "The Cube".
I invented "The Cube" last night and I share it the first time with the world in this video.
You will witness the first iteration of my invention and work on the exercises to explore yourself and create your future.
I created this idea last night and turned into slides. I created six journeys to help individual creativity and success.
I first created six metaphors for the journeys:
The Ocean: Your Strengths
The River: Your Interests
The Jungle: Your Contributions
The Cottage: Your Values
The Garden: Your Assets
The Mountain: Your Future Self
After creating the slides, I created the doodle poster.
I also created a physical cube that represents my vision.
This cube will be marketed as a stationery product or innovation.
It will be sold as a poster, and you can turn it into a cube.
I have also created a preliminary video that features the cube. You can find it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDNhO...
For the first time ever, you will experience the journey of "THE CUBE" in this video.
Please follow the steps. Get a notebook and pencil.
Mini-Journey 1: Discover Your Strengths
THE OCEAN
*Imagine that you are delving into a giant ocean. Imagine that you can breathe under water.
*You can swim, walk, and explore everything under water. You are in your zone of genius.
*You come across a treasure chest. You open it. What do you find inside this chest? Make a list of all the things you find there.
*This treasure chest represents YOUR BEST STRENGTHS.
*Make a long list of your best:
-Talents
-Skills
-Strengths
-Gifts
-Expertise and knowledge
Mini-Journey 2: Identify What Excites You
THE RIVER
*Imagine that you are now rafting along a fast- streaming river.
*You are an amazing rafter, and you are rocking it. Everything is flowing well. You have achieved momentum in your activities.
*You LOVE what you are doing. You leave a piece of yourself (your soul, creativity, or love) in what you do. Greeks call this MERAKI, and Turks call it MERAK
*Your raft represent your CHOPs (curiosities, hobbies, obsessions, and passions).
*Make a long list of your CHOPS now:
-Curiosities
-Hobbies
-Obsessions
-Passions
Mini-Journey 3: Figure Out Your Contributions
THE JUNGLE
*Imagine that you have now entered a tropical forest.
*It is a jungle out there – there is a lot of risk and uncertainty. This is a world full of wicked problems and complex challenges.
*You do not know what you will encounter in this journey. Nevertheless, you continue walking and exploring. You intend to carve your own path. You will make your own mark in the jungle.
*You carry a shovel and an axe. These are your tools/toolkits.
*Think about all your projects (i.e., your contribution, value creation, and problem solving).
*Make a long list of your projects, solutions, systems, models, innovations, etc.
-Which problems will you address and solve?
-How will you create and add value?
-What will be
Lectures 15 and 16 - Escape into the Metaverse - 26 April 2022.pptxFahri Karakas
ART DESCRIPTION/SYNOPSIS: "THE BORING LECTURE"
“Curiosity and creativity are the new productivity.”
Despite the abundance of entertainment media at the touch of our fingertips, we easily feel bored these days and we desperately want to escape from our mundane lives. Boredom strikes us particularly hard when we feel trapped by endless tasks, responsibilities, habits, and routines in our lives. We want to escape and immerse ourselves in new worlds – perhaps worlds that are more colorful, exciting, rich, and novel. We seek adventures to save us from all the baggage, drudgery, stress, and anxiety that surrounds us.
‘The Boring Lecture’ invites you to new possibilities and exciting life strategies to escape from boredom. It takes a bit of imagination, courage, and experimentation to get out of boredom (the rut). We will try to escape monotony and mediocrity through embracing uncertainty, curiosity, and wonder.
Towards this goal, we take on a cross-disciplinary tour and explore geeks, mavericks, eccentric artists, weirdoes, crazy entrepreneurs, inventors, dreamers, mind-expanding authors, and insane filmmakers.
As we travel from the sublime to the ridiculous, we will expand our sense of what is possible. Asteroids, stars, black holes, computer games, books, movies, and of course, the Metaverse will accompany us on our wonderful journey.
We will travel through our body, our mind, our sleep, and our dreams. We will try to solve two dozens of mini-puzzles and we will experiment with a dozen of mini-learning adventures. We will explore future disruptive innovations and potential trillionaire sectors. We will learn about the new gold rush: The space economy.
Finally, we will fly through space and land on Mars. We will learn about the Mars Generation and imagine what daily life might look like at the red planet.
This will be a wild tour – far from boring - are you ready?
From the Metaverse to NFTs, from blockchain to GPT-3, from YOLO economy to crowdfunding, we witness a Cambrian explosion of intelligence and accelerated innovation. The world is changing too fast and our educational systems are stuck in the past. How can we design customized learning journeys that celebrate the unique talents and passions of our students? How can we inspire our students to unleash their creativity and create their own assets? I decided to wear four new hats of an entrepreneur, an artist, a futurist, and a content creator. I aim to enable learning moments driven by curiosity, excitement, and fun. I aim to share a glimpse of my own journey in this workshop.
Podcast: Why and How to Build Your Own System of Asset CreationFahri Karakas
In this workshop, you will learn how to:
- start thinking and acting like an entrepreneur
- not trust the system and establish your own system
- achieve your financial independence
- create multiple streams of passive income
- think creatively about your journey of entrepreneurship and asset creation.
Make sure you implement these strategies immediately.
Inspirational Exercises for Your Career and Personal BrandFahri Karakas
In this seminar, we have a couple of activities aimed at improving your employability and personal brand.
First, we discuss your job application portfolio.
Second, we prepare our benchmarking table. In this exercise, you learn about brands at multiple levels (country brands, company brands, and individual brands). You choose 3 countries, 4 companies, and 4 individuals. You reflect on their success stories and brand power: What can you learn from these brands? How can you learn further? You create lessons and inspiration from these brands for your career.
Third, you create a business model canvas to create your own creative assets. You might use this activity to plan your asset creation strategies, such as creating your own YouTube channel, podcast, or Medium blog.
Fourth, you create a personal branding canvas to improve your employability. We go over a sample personal branding canvas exercise to illustrate how you can position yourself and your brand for the companies that you are applying for.
Best luck in your job applications.

Do Not Trust the System, Establish Your Own SystemFahri Karakas
In this workshop, I have just told the truth, only the truth to my students. Here is the core message:
You cannot trust the system. You cannot trust institutions. You need to create your own system to design your life and be independent. This means taking control of your own life, career, and money.
The world is crazy and full of shit out there. The earlier you realize this, the less you will get disappointed.
The world is changing fast, but our systems, governments, universities, and institutions are unfortunately slow in adapting to these changes. That is why you need to assume full responsibility for your own learning, development, and asset creation.
Even though many things look very bleak, you can still survive and thrive in this environment. You need to think and act like an entrepreneur.
You need to learn about personal finance and investments to achieve financial independence in your life. This involves creating multiple income streams, creating assets, and creating a path to financial freedom.
The lecture includes the following contents:
The Eye-Opening Pessimist Workshop: Thinking Critically and Questioning the System
Disrupting Education and University of the Future
Award-Winning Documentaries
£111 Exercise, Personal Finance, and Compounding
Crowdfunding Platforms and Kickstarter Exercise
Workshop: Self-Making Studio
Turning £5 to£5000 Exercise
This composite lecture addresses the following questions:
Can we trust the global system? Can we trust capitalism? Can we trust corporations? (The Answer is: No)
Can we trust our educational systems? (No)
How can we build and design educational systems and universities of the future?
Why is it critical to question the system and everything in it?
How can we develop our own independence and power in a world or a system that cannot be trusted?
Why is personal finance the most important ingredient in achieving your independence?
How can you achieve financial freedom in your life?
How can you think and act like an entrepreneur? Where do you start if you have fresh and exciting ideas you want to bring to the world?
Why is compounding indispensable for achieving long term success, richness, freedom, and contribution?
The overall thread that connects this lecture is to question the systems that you find yourself embedded into, whether these might be economic, social, educational, or organizational systems.
You need to question everything so that you can create your own independent thinking, agency, and independence in your life.
A multidisciplinary visual tour that includes videos, slides, exercises, articles, and suggestions on how to achieve this.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Nearly half (48.1%) of UK workers do not know how
to write a stand out CV that would boost their
chance of an interview, with a further 16.4%
admitting that they wouldn’t be able to write a

Actively manage your career at all times – not just when you need to.
It’s essential to keep on top of this and not let it fall by the wayside.
◦ Keep one eye on the market, company activity and emerging trends to ensure you are
always up to date.
◦ Spend some time regularly developing your network and keeping in touch. Tap into
networking groups or form your own.
Follow other people’s careers, learn from their journeys and introduce
yourself to new contacts.
Being seen to be proactive with your career will get you noticed.
◦ Motivation and support during a time of change is the key to not losing focus so meet
with others who are experiencing the same changes to swap tips, contacts and ideas.
Have a clear and definite career vision.
◦ If you have a career goal, use a time of change to assess how realistic this is and what
your ‘plan b’ may be. If you don’t have a vision, try thinking about what you want from
your career and how you might achieve this.
Always ensure that your ‘marketing toolkit’ is up to date.
◦ Keep your CV current and regularly review your LinkedIn profile to reflect your
experience. You never know when you may need these.

I sent out CVs. I heard nothing. I sent out more CVs; still nothing. I
began to feel that the market was against me – this was before the EU
referendum and hiring managers were holding their breath. It became
obvious that finding a job was going to be a lot harder than I’d
expected.
If your CV is ignored, the best thing you can do is to take a long hard
look at reality. Don’t blame recruiters for failing to respond; don’t
blame the market for not wanting your skills – repackage your
experience into something the market will want. Go with it, you never
know where it will take you.
19. Slide 1.19

friendly review to your colleague.
The fit between your skills and the position
requirements: Hugely important.

◦ Cover letters are short and usually must not be beyond one

more to convey your suitability for the position.

writing the usual cover letter with lots of paragraphs and
wordy explanation is boring – “everyone else does it and we
don’t have the time”.

Re: Outside Sales Rep Opening (#28903888) advertised on Monster
Dear Mr. Marks:
Your client's need for a top-performing, results-proven outside sales "hunter" caught my attention -- the position is an
excellent match to my qualifications. As an award-winning technology and B2B sales specialist, I offer:
•Five years of outside B2B sales experience selling enterprise software solutions. In my current position as an
outside sales representative for XYZ Company, I sell their full suite of enterprise software solutions to businesses
throughout the northeast territory.
•Adept skills in prospecting, pipeline building and closing business. I am one of the top-ranked outside sales
professionals within the region (ranked #5) and the only B2B sales professional to earn top 10 placement while
launching a new territory. My ability to capitalize on new opportunities and close deals enabled me to build my account
portfolio from zero to 257 within one year.
•Proven success working within sales quotas, with a history of awarded recognition for delivering excellent revenue
results with minimal ramp-up time. I always meet and frequently exceed monthly quotas at XYZ, surpassing goals by
as much as 150%.
•Expert abilities in demonstrating software and managing complex sales cycles. I am equally successful
conducting presentations and demos for technical and nontechnical audiences, with a talent for translating technical
concepts into easily understood terms and powerful benefit statements.
•Persuasive communication skills, with strengths in responding to RFPs, negotiating deals and articulating the value-
added benefits of my represented solutions. I also possess a bachelor's degree in communications from New York
University.
•A strong network of business contacts throughout the NY metro region.
Currently a "road warrior" sales rep, I am comfortable and experienced with extensive travel. I would welcome the
chance to discuss this opening and ways in which I would contribute to your client's sales operation. My resume is
enclosed, and you may call me at 718-555-5555 or send an email to susanmills@somedomain.com to arrange an
interview. I look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely,
Susan Mills

Subject: Summer Internship
Dear BLOCKED
My name is (BLOCKED) and I am an undergraduate finance student at (BLOCKED). I met you the
summer before last at Smith & Wollensky’s in New York when I was touring the east coast with my
uncle, (BLOCKED). I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to talk with me that night.
I am writing to inquire about a possible summer internship in your office. I am aware it is highly
unusual for undergraduates from average universities like (BLOCKED) to intern at (BLOCKED),
but nevertheless I was hoping you might make an exception. I am extremely interested in
investment banking and would love nothing more than to learn under your tutelage. I have no qualms
about fetching coffee, shining shoes or picking up laundry, and will work for next to nothing. In all
honesty, I just want to be around professionals in the industry and gain as much knowledge as I can.
I won’t waste your time inflating my credentials, throwing around exaggerated job titles, or
feeding you a line of crapp (sic) about how my past experiences and skill set align perfectly for an
investment banking internship. The truth is I have no unbelievably special skills or genius
eccentricities, but I do have a near perfect GPA and will work hard for you. I’ve interned for Merrill
Lynch in the Wealth Management Division and taken an investment banking class at (BLOCKED), for
whatever that is worth.
I am currently awaiting admission results for (BLOCKED) Masters of Science in Accountancy program,
which I would begin this fall if admitted. I am also planning on attending law school after my master’s
program, which we spoke about in New York. I apologize for the blunt nature of my letter, but I hope
you seriously consider taking me under your wing this summer. I have attached my resume for your
review. Feel free to call me at (BLOCKED) or email at (BLOCKED). Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
BLOCKED.

1 Listened to
Desert Island
Discs episode
of Dame Zaha
Hadid
I reflected on the critical importance of courage to shake up
traditional practices and concepts of architecture through fluid and
futuristic thinking. Zaha Hadid was one of the most celebrated
architects in the world in a field dominated by men. Her triumph
was to turn the beautiful graphic visions of her sculptural approach
into reality. This is due to her rare courage, conviction, tenacity and
a free creative spirit – all qualities that I find extremely valuable in
my future career. I am inspired to learn more about the unique life
and career of this remarkable woman.
2 Listened to
Desert Island
Discs episode
of Cath Kidston
Known for her floral designs combining the vintage and the
modern, Cath Kidston achieved amazing business success with her
business and brand worth £50 million and 100 shops worldwide.
Japanese are crazy about the brand calling it ‘kawaii’ (cute), a
celebration of cheerfulness. I find it a remarkable success story
based on finding this universal appeal of ‘cheering people up’
through practical design. Listening to her story, including the
obstacles and her vulnerable feelings during growing up her
business, was refreshing and gave me hope. Like her, perhaps I can
nourish my entrepreneurial side one day – all it requires is the
courage and readiness to experiment/fail along with a niche
business idea/solution that makes cheers up people.

3 Watched TED
Talk of
Benjamin
Zander titled:
“The
transformative
power of
classical music”
Benjamin Zander is not only the conductor of the Boston
Philharmonic; but also an excellent educator and trainer who is
passionate about classical music. In this talk, he shared valuable
insights and lessons about leadership through his passion of
classical music. He started with the story of the two salesmen who
went down to Africa in the 1900s if there was any opportunity to
sell shoes. They wrote telegrams back to Manchester. One of them
wrote, "Situation hopeless. Stop. They don't wear shoes." The other
one wrote, "Glorious opportunity. They don't have any shoes yet”.
He used music to help people open up their minds, create joyful
harmonies, and bring out the best in people. I was deeply inspired
by his energy and enthusiasm – there is a lot to learn from him
about ‘The Art of Possibility’ – I will read his book with this title to
continue my journey or inspiration.
4 Watched TED
Talk of Elizabeth
Gilbert titled:
“Your elusive
creative genius”
Elizabeth Gilbert’s talk was one of the most interesting and
inspiring TED Talks I have watched. In this talk, she mused on the
impossible things we expect from artists and geniuses. Success is
not about the Eureka moments or a single flash of insight that
magically transforms our mediocrity into genius. There is no such
thing. Instead, we need to focus on showing up and working hard
(the good old-fashioned hard work) in order to be creative.
Persistently doing our job in the best way is the single most critical
success factor.

5-6 Read sections
from the best
selling
business book
titled ‘Give and
Take’ by Adam
Grant
Wharton’s young wonder professor Adam Grant’s best selling
classic gave me empirical insights on why generosity at work
continues to be more effective than selfishness in the long term.
Grant classifies the motivations of successful entrepreneurs and
leaders into three: People who give, take, and match. Grant
explains through his research how those who succeed in the long
run are givers. It was refreshing and exciting to read how givers are
not weak and naïve; but become very successful for the long run. I
have learned about strategies to be more generous and how giving
makes us both more fulfilled and more successful at work.
7-8-9 Read the book
titled “Watching
the English:
The Hidden
Rules of English
Behaviour” by
Kate Fox.
This book was one of the most interesting anthropology books I
have ever read. English anthropologist Kate Fox explores the
quirkiness of Englishness, English people, their strange habits, and
their foibles through everyday moments and examples from British
life. Fox illustrates how this complex set of unspoken rules and
codes of behaviour govern everyday dynamics and behaviours in
the UK; such as pub etiquette or weather-speak. As an outsider to
British culture, I had great fun in reading these (funny and satirical)
observations that capture the heart of Englishness.

10 Watched Matt
Damon’s movie
“The Martian”
In this inspiring movie, Mark Wattney accidentally gets stranded on
Mars during an emergency evacuation. With the communications
antenna break down, he has no way of letting NASA know that he
has survived. The next manned mission to Mars is in four years and
will land 3200km away. His food supplies will only last a third of
that time, and he’s on a barren, waterless planet with no
atmosphere or oxygen. Even though his situation is hopeless, he
never stops trying, hoping, and working hard. The movie is a
masterclass in perseverance and creative solutions; such as the
famous “Martian potatoes”.
11-12 Binge-watched
the classic
British drama
“Downton
Abbey”
Although I watched this classic period drama for a lot of hours (one
of my guilty pleasures), I think it was a worthy investment due to its
timeless lessons on humility, hope, honesty, kindness, and
perseverance. Narrating the adventures of the aristocratic Crawley
family and the servants who work for them throughout the 1920s,
Downton Abbey taught me numerous life lessons including how life
can be abrupt and fragile, how you need to hang in there in the
face of obstacles, how the world keeps changing in a scary way and
how you need to adapt continuously, how it is important to create
fond memories with loved ones and family members, and how
honesty and dedication to duty are increases one’s self-worth and
others’ respect.
