This document provides four methods for maintaining a friendship with someone of the opposite sex. The first method is to be honest with yourself about any romantic feelings and whether those feelings could develop into a relationship if circumstances were different. The second method is to clearly define the relationship as a friendship from the beginning through open communication. The third method is to involve any significant others by being transparent and helping them become friends with the person as well. The fourth method outlines maintaining appropriate boundaries by minimizing sexual tension, avoiding ambiguous situations, and limiting or ending contact if boundaries cannot be upheld.
