Sickle Cell Anemia Essays
Sickle cell anemia is a hereditary disorder that mostly affects people of African ancestry, but also
occurs in other ethnic groups, including people who are of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent.
More than 70,000 Americans have sickle cell anemia. And about 2 million Americans and one in 12
African Americans have sickle cell trait (this means they carry one gene for the disease, but do not
have the disease itself).
Sickle cell anemia occurs when a person inherits two abnormal genes (one from each parent) that
cause their red blood cells to change shape. Instead of being flexible and round, these cells are more
rigid and curved in the shape of the farm tool known as a sickle that s where the disease gets its name.
The shape ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People with sickle cell anemia have inherited two sickle cell genes, one from each parent. A child who
has inherited the sickle cell gene from only one parent will not develop the disease, but will have
sickle cell trait. People who have sickle cell trait don t have sickle cell anemia or symptoms of the
disease, but they can pass the sickle cell gene to their own children.
Because people with sickle cell trait don t have the disease, they may never discover that they carry
the gene. That s why it s recommended that teens who are unsure of their sickle cell status ask their
doctors about testing. The National Institutes of Health recommends that all newborns be screened for
sickle cell disease, and testing at birth is now required in almost every state. This helps infants with
sickle cell anemia get the care and treatment they need right away.
Signs and Symptoms
Teens with sickle cell anemia may develop jaundice (pronounced: jon dis), a condition that results
from the high rate of red blood cell breakdown. Jaundice can cause the skin and the whites of a person
s eyes to develop a yellowish tint.
People with sickle cell anemia also may have bouts of pain in the chest, stomach, arms, legs, or other
parts of the body. This is caused by sickle cells blocking blood flow through the blood vessels. Feeling

Thesis For Malcolm X s Assassination
Malcolm X was assassinated February 21, 1965. Malcolm s assassination was unjust because he was
intelligent and was a truthful freedom fighter and empowered blacks but however he believed in
violence. Malcolm X was born May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska as Malcolm Little. He was also
known as El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. He was the fourth of eight children born to Louise, a homemaker,
and Earl Little, a preacher who was also an active member of the local chapter of the Universal Negro
Improvement Association and supporter of black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey.
Because of Earl Little s civil rights activism, the family faced frequent harassment from white

He then converted to traditional Islam, changing his name again. The name he chose was El Hajj

focusing on a more peaceful resolution to the race issues that were going on instead of being violent
and fighting for freedom in a more peaceful way. But, tragically just when it seemed like he was
trying to take a better approach to change the course of the Civil Rights Movement, he was
assassinated. It s interesting how when it seemed he was going to try to do things the right way the
second time around he ended up assassinated.
Malcolm X was gunned down on February 21, 1965 at the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan. He was
about to give a speech addressing a rally of his followers when shots rang out. He was shot 15 times at

Mango Street Identity
Visualize a time period where women are treated as objects and you are in severe poverty. You
constantly lose friends and sometimes you get desperate enough to pay for them. Esperanza has to
cope with all of this as she struggles to find her identity in a tough world. In the House on Mango
Street the author illustrates that Esperanza can t accept her identity because of her gender and
economic status.
Esperanza illustrates how her gender is looked down upon and treated badly. Women all around the
community are beaten or locked in their houses by their husband. Esperanza notices that women in
general have to serve their husbands and how girls around the area are abused. Esperanza mentions
that My mother says when I get older I will settle and my blouse will learn to stay clean, but I have
decided not to grow tame like the other who lay their necks on the threshold waiting for the ball and
chain. (88) In this quote when she states she will not grow tame like the others who waited for the ball
and chain she is referring to the other woman on Mango Street who didn t take action. The quote by
Esperanza implies that she will do something about this and not wait to accept the bad treatment.
Esperanza is naturally given the identity of a fragile girl but she will not accept that and will do what it
takes to get a new identity. In Esperanza s race women are wanted weak rather than strong. Esperanza
says, ...because the Chinese, like the Mexicans don t like their women

Orion’s belt is one of the famous constellations in our...
Orion s belt is one of the famous constellations in our galaxy. There are 3 stars that form the belt, their
names are: Mintaka, Alnilam, Alnitak, which comes from Arabic. In the myth, Hera, the wife of Zeus
sent a scorpion to kill Orion. The belt is a system of stars that have sibling stars that orbit around it.
Each star is potentially bright. The star Mintaka is super giant star that is 1,000 light years away. The
star is also 10,000 times brighter than our son. With it being the western most star of the belt, it is
60,000 degrees Celsius.
The star Alnilam, the middle star, is also a super giant. As close as it seems, it is actually 1,000 light

The meaning of the three stars are: Mintaka means area or region , Alnilam means the string of pearls ,
and Alnitak comes from the phrase that means the girdle . The stars formed around the same time as
each other. There are several versions of the myth. In another myth, Orion was blinded for raping
Merope. She was the grand daughter of the god Dionysis. Then he was sent to travel east to seek the
sun s rays to recover his sight. The Greeks were able to see the figure of Orion in the sky at night.

The Importance Of Righteousness In The Book Of Job
Book of Job
Job was a righteous man who feared God and upheld divine standards. He abounded in gifts of mercy
and acts of godly devotion. Job routinely offered sacrifices to atone for his children s sins. Hence, God
was quite pleased to observe as His servant maintained integrity in his dealings (Carney, 2014). The
Almighty spoke about Job s godly devotion to Satan the Devil. It was then that the latter questioned
Job s motives. In fact, Satan claimed that Job was primarily concerned with selfish interests. The
Devil accused God of providing inordinate protection to his servant. In this regard, the Almighty was
presumed to have bribed Job. God saw it fit to allow Satan to bring trials upon Job to test the patriarch
s motives (Carney, 2014). In this essay, I will highlight the significance of righteousness in the debates
between Job and his friends.
Job s debate with his friends was precipitated by the former s determination to uphold righteous
standards. Notably, Job experienced tremendous tribulations due to Satan s efforts. His 10 children
died while his livestock was killed. Job s servants also died under mysterious circumstances.
Unfortunately, his wife deserted and mocked him for his faith in God. In fact, she taunted him to curse
God and die. Nevertheless, these events could not break Job s integrity. Satan was determined to
intensify his physical attacks on Job. The patriarch was struck with a debilitating illness that subjected
him to constant pain (Carney, 2014).

Early Southeast Asian Americans
The following questions will be analyzed based on Anthony Reid s work Early Southeast Asians
categorization of Europeans: How did Southeast Asians categorize Europeans? Was the classification
considered a racial ideology? How did the rating change over time? When Southeast Asians first
encountered the Europeans, they did not categorize them because the region was already highly
diverse ethnically and religiously. Since the Europeans were not classified based on their race, there
was no proof of racial ideology during the time Southeast Asians made contact with them. However,
there was evidence that over time, a negative relationship emerged between the Southeast Asians and
Europeans. The hostility was due to the Europeans firm belief that everyone ... Show more content on

created in the region. In the early sixteenth century when the European knew their place and respected

different groups in the region were able to coexist and put the several economic benefits of trading

The Origins Of The United Nations
Kofi Annan once said, More than ever before in human history we share a common destiny. We can
master it only if we face it together. The origins of the United Nations began seventy years, here, in
the United States. In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations
Conference. Each delegate deliberated on the proposals by the representatives of China, the Soviet
Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States at Dumbarton Oaks starting in August of 1944. The
Charter was signed in June of 1945 by each of the fifty one representatives. The U.N. was officialized
on October 24 of 1945, after the Charter had been ratified by a majority of other signatories (un.org,
2015) . While the intentions for Franklin D. Roosevelt s coined United Nations was to align the Allied
Powers and anyone else against the Axis Powers in World War II, the it s goals are a bit broader now.
While we did have a League of Nations before The United Nations, it was put in place after the Paris
Peace Conference after the first World War, there wasn t exactly much accomplished. The United
Nations now, has four main purposes: maintain international peace and security, develop healthy
relations amongst nations, solve international problems and promote human rights. While some
agendas are hard to advance, the U.N. has successfully completed several; including peacebuilding in
war ridden countries, new enforcement on the issue of climate change, and defending human

The Theories Of Management That Organizations Can Use
There are many approaches to management that organizations can use. Managerial theories are based
on historical approaches or historical theories. Many organizations use more than one approach that
may or may not be effective. Several decades ago researchers were attempting to explain the nature of
managing from six different points of view: management process, empirical approach, human
behavior, social system, decision theory, and mathematics theory.
The organization that I work for, the City of Lilburn, does not use just one approach to management.
One of the management approaches that the city uses is the social system approach. Vilfredo Pareto, a
sociologist, and Chester Barnard were the pioneers of this theory. Pareto came up with the idea that
human relationships were social systems (Koontz, 1980). His work made an impression and
influenced Chester Barnard.
Barnard, during his study, noticed executives operating in cooperative social systems that he names
organizations. Social systems are the cooperative interaction of ideas, forces, desires and thinking of
two or more people. This theory later was applied to many groups and cooperatives (Koontz, 1980).
With this approach organizations are essentially a cultural system that is composed of people who
work in cooperation in order to achieve the organizations goals. Management needs to understand the
behavior of people in the groups in order for this approach to be affective. This approach relies on the

The Social Gospel By John Lewis
The social gospel was the biggest inspiration and influence for Civil Rights leader, John Lewis. Which
is prevalent throughout the first two books, of the March trilogy, written by Andrew Aydin and John
Lewis himself. The Bible made its mark on Lewis when he was young farm boy. Leading him to the
social gospel which started him down the path of nonviolence, and longing not just for personal
reform but for social reform. As the Civil Rights movements became bigger, and as the philosophy of
which John Lewis taught spread, others were inspired by the social gospel. At a very young age John
Lewis love for the gospel was born. At the age of four his uncle gifted him his first Bible for
Christmas. Even though he was too young to read it for himself; the words that his mother read to him,
had a strong impact. He said, I ll never forget my mother reading aloud to me the first words in that
book In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth (Lewis and Aydin March Book one 26).
By age five he could read the Bible himself, and the messages began to shape, and impact him even
more. John Lewis then wanted to be a preacher, so he began preaching to the chickens on his farm,
with soulful messages. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. [...] Blessed are the
merciful: for they shall obtain mercy (Lewis and Aydin March Book one 27). Little did he know, that
what he preached to the chickens were molding his future. Those words are what he was going to
stand for, his morals. What he was going to be known for, what will become his determination, and
will drive him for years to come. There was one verse in particular that did stand out to Lewis, John
1:29: Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world (KJV). In this verse the lamb of
God is referring to Jesus, whom sacrifices himself to take away the sin of every person and save every
person. There is a strong connection between John Lewis and Jesus Christ. Foreshadowing, that John
Lewis believes his purpose is to liberate the lives of African Americans. The idea of the social gospel
was introduced to John Lewis for the first time when he heard Martin Luther King Jr. give a sermon
over the radio. Lewis stated: Dr. King s

Plot Structure Of A Short Story
The story that I believe had the most effective plot structure would be The Bicycle by Jillian Horton.
The first reason I believe this is that the story was the longest one out of the other ones read in class.
This means that the author had more space to position the introduction, rising action, climax, falling
action and the conclusion in spots that made sense. After reading this short story I found that I
understood what happen better than other stories I have read in class. The second reason I believe this

Comparing Huxley s Brave New World
Pieper describes work and leisure from a unique perspective. He believes that work is a necessary part
of life, but one that should not consume our every waking moment. Piper challenges our modern
definition of work to show us that time away can be beneficial. The leisure that he references is not a
period of just not doing anything. He argues that our time not consumed by our work should be
devoted to philosophy and theology that enriches our lives. What the modern world uses as leisure,
which is not thinking at all, is what Pieper would call being sloth. The time away from work is meant
for personal and spiritual growth. Idleness robs our time as much as work, but leisure allows us to
expand our horizons. Comparing Huxley s Brave NEw World

Racism In Cry, The Beloved Country, And Toni Morrison s...
Racism has been a part of the world s landscape for centuries. Despite the progress of society,
inequality has still manifested its way into today s population. The detrimental effects of racism are
not limited to simply the survivors themselves; they continue to influence the lives of families for
future generations. Inequality has a lasting legacy. This idea is represented well in Cry, the Beloved
Country by Alan Paton, and Toni Morrison s Beloved. Each novel examines the legacy of inequality,
and racism haunts each novels characters. The destruction of identity, the backdrop of social injustice,
and separation of families can all be displayed in both texts.
In Cry, the Beloved Country and Beloved it can be seen that Inequality employs a lasting legacy
through the destruction of identity. To start, Paton shows how Johannesburg s system of apartheid
shatters the morals and values of citizens. When in Johannesburg, powerful white men use the land to
solely their own benefit. The tribal system of African natives is ravaged and replaced with
homelessness, violence, fear, and poverty. Paton summarizes this when he states Our natives today
produce criminals and prostitutes and drunkards, not because it is their nature to do so, but because
their system of order and tradition has been destroyed. It was destroyed by the impact of our own
civilization (Paton 146). The injustices faced by generations past are continuing to affect
Johannesburg s current citizens. This is

Essay about Women s Roles In China
Women in China at the beginning of the twentieth century
China was suffering a great loss at the beginning of the twentieth century since half of its citizens were
not able to contribute much to the country. The Chinese society at that time was male dominated, so
though women comprised almost half of the total population, they had actually very little part to play
in uplifting the country economically, socially and intellectually. Nevertheless, Chinese women should
not be blamed for that. They had their own reasons for being so unproductive, which they later tried to
overcome successfully.

Even peasent women had to have their feet bound, so this meant while they were working in the
fields, they basically had to crawl. Foot binding was not only for the sake of beauty, but it also served
the purpose for the Chinese young girls to be restricted from going out of their houses. This practice
lasted for about a thousand years. Thus this unhealthy practice prevented Chinese women from going
beyond their homes and thus limited their freedom to gain knowledge from the outside world.
Secondly, Chinese women were socially restricted. quot;Chastity for women was more valuable than
life itself. The definition of chastity became ridiculously broad to the extent that a girl was considered
unclean if she happened to see a man s sex organ when he urinated in the public place. quot; Unless
she married him she had to commit suicide to protect her reputation (Yao 106). quot; Moreover,
women who were disowned by their husbands due to unfaithfulness and disobedience were deprived

source of living as they were completely dependent on their men, suicide was the only alternative (Yao
79). More often the family made those decisions of suicide because that saved its name. So, there was

In 2014, the federal government announced major changes to its immigration system pressing many
Canadians to raise questions about the immigration strategies sponsored by the country s political
parties. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gergin (2011) suggests that the Conservatives have crafted an immigration policy that is less
compassionate and more economically based. He goes on to argue that the family class immigration
initiatives has virtually vanished under the Harper government and that the leadership continues to
amend the formula towards the entrepreneurial and well educated individual who should easily
integrate successfully into the state s economy and social spheres.
Scholars assert that the key theme in the evolution of Canada s immigration strategy is the perceived
trade off between short term and long term objectives. Canada s shifting immigration policy and the
emphasis placed on specific immigration goals will always invite critics and expose competing
immigration principles amid Canada s political parties.

Cultural Differences Of Ethnic Restaurants In America
The changes in menus of the ethnic restaurants make customers have an idea about other cultures. To
be a multicultural country and having many different ethnic food market its very useful for the
community. In addition to the fact that America is melting pot country; ethnic food can be helpful to
be a cultural ambassador in American society, which help to reduce the idea of racism. At the
beginning of the ethnic market trade there weren t many successful ethnic restaurants due to some
reasons such as religious. After a while many of these ethnic restaurants become popular in American
community which helps to decrease the racism. According to the professor Samantha Barbas by

Contribution Margin and Break Even Analysis
Contribution Margin and Break Even Analysis. Many factors come into play in determining business
success. One of them is the financial factor. For a company to set financial goals it is crucial that its
management know in detail the products or services they sale or provide. This is the analysis of two
different scenarios at Aunt Connie s Cookies Simulation (University of Phoenix, 2011) and the
financial performance of Jamestown Electric Supply Company (Heiter, et. al. 2008). During both
analysis I applied concepts like fixed and variable costs, contribution margin, break even point,
indifference point, and operating leverage.

If the business sales less, it will make a loss, if it sells more, it will be a profit. The break even point in
volume is the point where the plant s fixed expenses are covered. In the case that Maria considers
Aunt Connie s Cookie shop cannot sell that much, she may ensure viability of the plant by (1) trying
to reduce the fixed costs (e.g. renegotiating rent, reducing telephone bills, insurance, etc.), (2) trying to
reduce variable costs (e.g. purchasing at lower cost the ingredients used to make cookies), or (3)
increasing the selling price of the cookies. Any of these strategies can reduce the break even point in
volume. In the worst of the scenarios, Maria should not buy the peanut butter cookie plant. Key
Learning Points. During the simulation I applied several concepts such as contribution margin, break
even point, fixed and variable costs, indifference point, and operating leverage. All these concepts
interrelate and form part of the cost volume profit analysis tool. The application of these concepts by
managers help organizations attain good financial performance. Cost volume profit analysis (CVP
analysis) is a powerful tool that can help managers in understanding better the relationship that exists
among the cost, the volume, and the profit in a business. Managers can make good business decision if
they concentrate in trying to understand the interaction that exists among (1) the prices of product or
services, (2) the level of activity, (3) the

Race as a Factor to Be Hired for Certain Jobs
The overall goal of my interview processes and data collecting were to find answers to one question,
How do you believe race plays a factor in the ability to be hired for certain jobs? . Also, I wanted to
ask if any of the interviewees felt as if the inability to get the job was due to any stereotypes. Over the
course of different people I interview I received a wide range of answers, many of those siding with
the fact that race plays an enormous part, and most even having stories of how their race may have
hindered or helped them in the past due to different racial stereotypes.
During the process of planning my interviews, I decided that I needed to choose the interviewees from
a location of diversity and I felt that my own college peers would be perfect for the task. The first
interviewer I chose was a professor of the college, Jose Hernandez age 42, born and raised in El
Salvador. Professor Hernandez had lived in El Salvador until the age of 13 when his parents made the
decision to move to the United States to ensure that their children would receive better education and
opportunities. Once making it the U.S., he had to learn to read, write, and speak English and has now
made it as a successful Spanish Professor at Kennesaw State University. Professor Hernandez and I
decided to reserve a time during his office hours to meet. We met around noon and the interview lasted
for about forty minutes. From the interviews I had done, I received the most information and personal

Adolf Hitler was the fourth born of six children to Alois and Klara Hitler on April 20th, 1889 in

qualities. Although, when Hitler reached secondary school he failed most of his exam s and was told
he had to repeat a year. As a result, he left school school with an informal education. At the age of
eighteen, Hitler moved to Vienna in hope of attending both the Vienna Academy of Art and the School
of Architecture without the approval of his father. Although, both of his applications were rejected,
which lead to his interest in politics.

Elie Wiesel Indifference
Indifference is a blurred line between light and darkness. Indifference is dangerous. Indifference is
seductive. Indifference is unnatural. Indifference is tempting. Indifference is careless. Indifference is
not a beginning, it is an end. The Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel in his speech, The Perils of
Indifference, claims that indifference has multiple hazards. He supports his claim by first comparing
indifference or lack of interest to it being more dangerous than anger and hatred, then comparing the
meaning of indifference to not only a sin, but to a punishment. Wiesel s purpose is to define
indifference in order for us to be aware of its effects so that we can do something about it. He creates a

approximately murdered 800,000 people in 100 days. The genocide all started because the president at
this time was a Hutu and was shot down from his airplane. As a result, the group Hutu thought that the
other group Tutsi had planned it all out. To clarify, the Hutu group was angry with the Tutsi, which
caused violence. The United States decide not to get involved because they didn t want any more
problems. As a matter of fact, Wiesel had thought that the American army decided not to get involved
as well as he stated in paragraph 17. In other words when Wiesel was in the concentration camps, he
thought that the American army had decided not to intervene with Hitler and his men.
Ultimately, Elie Wiesel is an extraordinary human being. Why did Elie Wiesel decide to write his life
changing speech you might ask. Wiesel decide to come up with is speech because he wanted to
illustrate the dangers of indifference using personal experiences and historical examples. He wanted us
to learn why indifference is so inhumane. He wanted us to know that there are other genocides going
on and that the century/society of today should not commit these same mistakes. Elie Wiesel wanted

The Controversy And Subjective Meaning Of A Girl By Ezra...
The anthology is compiled of my favorite poems, and I purposely selected poems with controversial
and subjective meanings. Unlike other forms of literature, such as narrations, in which the meaning
and language is more direct, poetry tends to be more personal and open to interpretation. In many
cases, even the poet never clearly reveals their poem s true intent, allowing a myriad of theories to
formulate. The subjectiveness of poetry allows the audience to develop various interpretations, which
also ensures that more people are identify with them through different ways. For example, the
meaning of A Girl by Ezra Pound is still debated, and while it is mostly accepted that the poem is
based off the myth of Apollo and Daphne, there are still

Yossarian In Joseph Heller s Catch-22
Many people see the law of Catch 22 as for every choice you make, there will end up being an
opposite reaction to that, or a double edged sword. However, in Joseph Heller s historical fiction,
Catch 22, Yossarian is presented with several ways to define a Catch 22. He s not sure how the war

Yossarian is a soldier in the Air Force in the second half of World War II, he started the war out

now he tries to get out of the war in any way possible. In one of his shenanigans, he tries to avoid
going to war by trying to be declared insane. Inadvertently, his attempt at being declared insane failed
as he was proved sane. Yossarian s friend Nately, falls in love with a prostitute from Rome and is
always flirting with her, however, by the time she does end up marrying him, he dies on the next
mission. Every time that Yossarian has been in her presence since then, the prostitute tries to stab

A Bit of Earth by Suchen Christine Lim
Historical fiction is often able to provide readers with an understanding into past events through the
lives of the characters portrayed. Seen in Suchen Christine Lim s novel A Bit of Earth , we follow the
journey of the main protagonist Wong Tuck Heng. Through Tuck Heng s story, the novel provides a
chronicle of the Chinese immigrant story, depicting the social situation in nineteenth century Malaya.
The novel exemplifies the presence of anti colonialist feelings, the struggles amongst the various
communities living in Malaya, highlighting issues of racial differences as well as conflicts that arose
from the dichotomy of tradition and modernity. However, through the use of revisionist tactics, the
text attempts to intervene in history and the historical imagination , disturbing the comfort of received
knowledge and interrogating historical events for readers. (Poon, 2008) Thus, this essay seeks to
explore the history of Malaya through Lim s A Bit of Earth and understand how an alternative
perspective is presented in viewing characters from the past. Suchen Christine Lim s A Bit of Earth
depicts the lives of characters spanning across three generations, living within the period of nineteenth
to early twentieth century Malaya. The title of the novel A Bit of Earth creates a sense of
insignificance with regards to the earth , where land seems to be of minor importance to the characters
in the novel. Yet, this act of trivializing the value of land in the fictional

The Pony Express
The Pony Express was an extremely important event in history for three profoundly reasons. All
together, it helped the farther east states to keep in contact with the West with all the news of what was
happening, important documents, and sometimes small packages and family letters that were being
sent from different states. It helped for new and more improved ideas of how could the spreading of
news could be spread faster and safer. The good reason of keeping all the states in contact with all the
others is because families moved or members of a family moved to further states for jobs. Travelers
went in search for wealth and land and with the California Gold Rush people went to get a better life.
But with the rush to go find gold, that left many people in need to know what was going and if their
love ones found anything and what documents are being passed because of the California Gold rush.
Especially when California became a state it put extreme pressure upon the citizens, business, and all
miners alike for electing U.S government representatives. Furthermore people wanted to keep in touch
with their friends, family, and companies. As the tremendous threat of the Civil War about to break out
and the Southern states rebelling because of the refusing to give up slavery and with other things
causing the Civil War to happen. It opened up the eyes of many companies. Some seen what could

  • 2. Sickle Cell Anemia Essays Sickle cell anemia is a hereditary disorder that mostly affects people of African ancestry, but also occurs in other ethnic groups, including people who are of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent. More than 70,000 Americans have sickle cell anemia. And about 2 million Americans and one in 12 African Americans have sickle cell trait (this means they carry one gene for the disease, but do not have the disease itself). Sickle cell anemia occurs when a person inherits two abnormal genes (one from each parent) that cause their red blood cells to change shape. Instead of being flexible and round, these cells are more rigid and curved in the shape of the farm tool known as a sickle that s where the disease gets its name. The shape ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People with sickle cell anemia have inherited two sickle cell genes, one from each parent. A child who has inherited the sickle cell gene from only one parent will not develop the disease, but will have sickle cell trait. People who have sickle cell trait don t have sickle cell anemia or symptoms of the disease, but they can pass the sickle cell gene to their own children. Because people with sickle cell trait don t have the disease, they may never discover that they carry the gene. That s why it s recommended that teens who are unsure of their sickle cell status ask their doctors about testing. The National Institutes of Health recommends that all newborns be screened for sickle cell disease, and testing at birth is now required in almost every state. This helps infants with sickle cell anemia get the care and treatment they need right away. Signs and Symptoms Teens with sickle cell anemia may develop jaundice (pronounced: jon dis), a condition that results from the high rate of red blood cell breakdown. Jaundice can cause the skin and the whites of a person s eyes to develop a yellowish tint. People with sickle cell anemia also may have bouts of pain in the chest, stomach, arms, legs, or other parts of the body. This is caused by sickle cells blocking blood flow through the blood vessels. Malcolm s assassination was unjust because he was intelligent and was a truthful freedom fighter and empowered blacks but however he believed in violence. Malcolm X was born May 19, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska as Malcolm Little. He was also known as El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. He was the fourth of eight children born to Louise, a homemaker, and Earl Little, a preacher who was also an active member of the local chapter of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and supporter of black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. Because of Earl Little s civil rights activism, the family faced frequent harassment from white supremacist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and one of its splinter groups, the Black ... He returned to the United States, but this time he wasn t as angry and was actually focusing on a more peaceful resolution to the race issues that were going on instead of being violent and fighting for freedom in a more peaceful way. But, tragically just when it seemed like he was trying to take a better approach to change the course of the Civil Rights Movement, he was assassinated. It s interesting how when it seemed he was going to try to do things the right way the second time around he ended up assassinated. Malcolm X was gunned down on February 21, 1965 at the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan. He was about to give a speech addressing a rally of his followers when shots rang out. He was shot 15 times at close range and fell on the stage of the Ballroom where he laid mortally wounded. His followers attempted to help him but it was too late! • 4. Mango Street Identity Visualize a time period where women are treated as objects and you are in severe poverty. You constantly lose friends and sometimes you get desperate enough to pay for them. Esperanza has to cope with all of this as she struggles to find her identity in a tough world. In the House on Mango Street the author illustrates that Esperanza can t accept her identity because of her gender and economic status. Esperanza illustrates how her gender is looked down upon and treated badly. Women all around the community are beaten or locked in their houses by their husband. Esperanza notices that women in general have to serve their husbands and how girls around the area are abused. Esperanza mentions that My mother says when I get older I will settle and my blouse will learn to stay clean, but I have decided not to grow tame like the other who lay their necks on the threshold waiting for the ball and chain. (88) In this quote when she states she will not grow tame like the others who waited for the ball and chain she is referring to the other woman on Mango Street who didn t take action. The quote by Esperanza implies that she will do something about this and not wait to accept the bad treatment. Esperanza is naturally given the identity of a fragile girl but she will not accept that and will do what it takes to get a new identity. In Esperanza s race women are wanted weak rather than strong. There are 3 stars that form the belt, their names are: Mintaka, Alnilam, Alnitak, which comes from Arabic. In the myth, Hera, the wife of Zeus sent a scorpion to kill Orion. The belt is a system of stars that have sibling stars that orbit around it. Each star is potentially bright. The star Mintaka is super giant star that is 1,000 light years away. The star is also 10,000 times brighter than our son. With it being the western most star of the belt, it is 60,000 degrees Celsius. The star Alnilam, the middle star, is also a super giant. • 7. The Importance Of Righteousness In The Book Of Job Book of Job Job was a righteous man who feared God and upheld divine standards. He abounded in gifts of mercy and acts of godly devotion. Job routinely offered sacrifices to atone for his children s sins. Hence, God was quite pleased to observe as His servant maintained integrity in his dealings (Carney, 2014). The Almighty spoke about Job s godly devotion to Satan the Devil. It was then that the latter questioned Job s motives. In fact, Satan claimed that Job was primarily concerned with selfish interests. The Devil accused God of providing inordinate protection to his servant. In this regard, the Almighty was presumed to have bribed Job. God saw it fit to allow Satan to bring trials upon Job to test the patriarch s motives (Carney, 2014). In this essay, I will highlight the significance of righteousness in the debates between Job and his friends. Job s debate with his friends was precipitated by the former s determination to uphold righteous standards. Notably, Job experienced tremendous tribulations due to Satan s efforts. His 10 children died while his livestock was killed. Job s servants also died under mysterious circumstances. Unfortunately, his wife deserted and mocked him for his faith in God. In fact, she taunted him to curse God and die. Nevertheless, these events could not break Job s integrity. Satan was determined to intensify his physical attacks on Job. The patriarch was struck with a debilitating illness that subjected him to constant pain (Carney, 2014). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Was the classification considered a racial ideology? How did the rating change over time? When Southeast Asians first encountered the Europeans, they did not categorize them because the region was already highly diverse ethnically and religiously. Since the Europeans were not classified based on their race, there was no proof of racial ideology during the time Southeast Asians made contact with them. The origins of the United Nations began seventy years, here, in the United States. In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference. Each delegate deliberated on the proposals by the representatives of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States at Dumbarton Oaks starting in August of 1944. The Charter was signed in June of 1945 by each of the fifty one representatives. The U.N. was officialized on October 24 of 1945, after the Charter had been ratified by a majority of other signatories (un.org, 2015) . While the intentions for Franklin D. Roosevelt s coined United Nations was to align the Allied Powers and anyone else against the Axis Powers in World War II, the it s goals are a bit broader now. While we did have a League of Nations before The United Nations, it was put in place after the Paris Peace Conference after the first World War, there wasn t exactly much accomplished. The United Nations now, has four main purposes: maintain international peace and security, develop healthy relations amongst nations, solve international problems and promote human rights. • 11. The Theories Of Management That Organizations Can Use There are many approaches to management that organizations can use. Managerial theories are based on historical approaches or historical theories. Many organizations use more than one approach that may or may not be effective. Several decades ago researchers were attempting to explain the nature of managing from six different points of view: management process, empirical approach, human behavior, social system, decision theory, and mathematics theory. The organization that I work for, the City of Lilburn, does not use just one approach to management. One of the management approaches that the city uses is the social system approach. Vilfredo Pareto, a sociologist, and Chester Barnard were the pioneers of this theory. Pareto came up with the idea that human relationships were social systems (Koontz, 1980). His work made an impression and influenced Chester Barnard. Barnard, during his study, noticed executives operating in cooperative social systems that he names organizations. Social systems are the cooperative interaction of ideas, forces, desires and thinking of two or more people. This theory later was applied to many groups and cooperatives (Koontz, 1980). With this approach organizations are essentially a cultural system that is composed of people who work in cooperation in order to achieve the organizations goals. Management needs to understand the behavior of people in the groups in order for this approach to be affective. This approach relies on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Social Gospel By John Lewis The social gospel was the biggest inspiration and influence for Civil Rights leader, John Lewis. Which is prevalent throughout the first two books, of the March trilogy, written by Andrew Aydin and John Lewis himself. The Bible made its mark on Lewis when he was young farm boy. Leading him to the social gospel which started him down the path of nonviolence, and longing not just for personal reform but for social reform. As the Civil Rights movements became bigger, and as the philosophy of which John Lewis taught spread, others were inspired by the social gospel. At a very young age John Lewis love for the gospel was born. At the age of four his uncle gifted him his first Bible for Christmas. Even though he was too young to read it for himself; the words that his mother read to him, had a strong impact. He said, I ll never forget my mother reading aloud to me the first words in that book In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth (Lewis and Aydin March Book one 26). By age five he could read the Bible himself, and the messages began to shape, and impact him even more. John Lewis then wanted to be a preacher, so he began preaching to the chickens on his farm, with soulful messages. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. [...] Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy (Lewis and Aydin March Book one 27). Little did he know, that what he preached to the chickens were molding his future. Those words are what he was going to stand for, his morals. What he was going to be known for, what will become his determination, and will drive him for years to come. There was one verse in particular that did stand out to Lewis, John 1:29: Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world (KJV). In this verse the lamb of God is referring to Jesus, whom sacrifices himself to take away the sin of every person and save every person. There is a strong connection between John Lewis and Jesus Christ. Foreshadowing, that John Lewis believes his purpose is to liberate the lives of African Americans. The idea of the social gospel was introduced to John Lewis for the first time when he heard Martin Luther King Jr. give a sermon over the radio. Lewis stated: Dr. King s ... After reading this short story I found that I understood what happen better than other stories I have read in class. He believes that work is a necessary part of life, but one that should not consume our every waking moment. Piper challenges our modern definition of work to show us that time away can be beneficial. The leisure that he references is not a period of just not doing anything. He argues that our time not consumed by our work should be devoted to philosophy and theology that enriches our lives. What the modern world uses as leisure, which is not thinking at all, is what Pieper would call being sloth. The time away from work is meant for personal and spiritual growth. • 17. Racism In Cry, The Beloved Country, And Toni Morrison s... Racism has been a part of the world s landscape for centuries. Despite the progress of society, inequality has still manifested its way into today s population. The detrimental effects of racism are not limited to simply the survivors themselves; they continue to influence the lives of families for future generations. Inequality has a lasting legacy. This idea is represented well in Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, and Toni Morrison s Beloved. Each novel examines the legacy of inequality, and racism haunts each novels characters. The destruction of identity, the backdrop of social injustice, and separation of families can all be displayed in both texts. In Cry, the Beloved Country and Beloved it can be seen that Inequality employs a lasting legacy through the destruction of identity. To start, Paton shows how Johannesburg s system of apartheid shatters the morals and values of citizens. When in Johannesburg, powerful white men use the land to solely their own benefit. The tribal system of African natives is ravaged and replaced with homelessness, violence, fear, and poverty. Paton summarizes this when he states Our natives today produce criminals and prostitutes and drunkards, not because it is their nature to do so, but because their system of order and tradition has been destroyed. It was destroyed by the impact of our own civilization (Paton 146). The injustices faced by generations past are continuing to affect Johannesburg s current citizens. This is ... Essay about Women s Roles In China Women in China at the beginning of the twentieth century China was suffering a great loss at the beginning of the twentieth century since half of its citizens were not able to contribute much to the country. The Chinese society at that time was male dominated, so though women comprised almost half of the total population, they had actually very little part to play in uplifting the country economically, socially and intellectually. Nevertheless, Chinese women should not be blamed for that. They had their own reasons for being so unproductive, which they later tried to overcome successfully. Even peasent women had to have their feet bound, so this meant while they were working in the fields, they basically had to crawl. Foot binding was not only for the sake of beauty, but it also served the purpose for the Chinese young girls to be restricted from going out of their houses. This practice lasted for about a thousand years. Thus this unhealthy practice prevented Chinese women from going beyond their homes and thus limited their freedom to gain knowledge from the outside world. Secondly, Chinese women were socially restricted. quot;Chastity for women was more valuable than life itself. The definition of chastity became ridiculously broad to the extent that a girl was considered unclean if she happened to see a man s sex organ when he urinated in the public place. quot; Unless she married him she had to commit suicide to protect her reputation (Yao 106). quot; Moreover, women who were disowned by their husbands due to unfaithfulness and disobedience were deprived of employment, bearing remorse and disgrace for life quot; (Yao 79). Since these women had no other source of living as they were completely dependent on their men, suicide was the only alternative (Yao 79). More often the family made those decisions of suicide because that saved its name. Race as a Factor to Be Hired for Certain Jobs The overall goal of my interview processes and data collecting were to find answers to one question, How do you believe race plays a factor in the ability to be hired for certain jobs? . Also, I wanted to ask if any of the interviewees felt as if the inability to get the job was due to any stereotypes. Over the course of different people I interview I received a wide range of answers, many of those siding with the fact that race plays an enormous part, and most even having stories of how their race may have hindered or helped them in the past due to different racial stereotypes. Seen in Suchen Christine Lim s novel A Bit of Earth , we follow the journey of the main protagonist Wong Tuck Heng. Through Tuck Heng s story, the novel provides a chronicle of the Chinese immigrant story, depicting the social situation in nineteenth century Malaya. The novel exemplifies the presence of anti colonialist feelings, the struggles amongst the various communities living in Malaya, highlighting issues of racial differences as well as conflicts that arose from the dichotomy of tradition and modernity. However, through the use of revisionist tactics, the text attempts to intervene in history and the historical imagination , disturbing the comfort of received knowledge and interrogating historical events for readers.
