The document analyzes the representation of ecosystems in Thailand's protected area network and recommends which underrepresented ecosystems should be added. It finds that 24.4% of Thailand's land area is protected, with dry evergreen, moist evergreen, hill evergreen, bamboo and pine forests well represented. Mangrove forest and riparian wetlands are poorly represented due to logging, shrimp farming, coastal development, and human settlement. The document recommends adding more samples of mangrove forest and riparian wetlands to protected areas to improve representation of underprotected ecosystems.

Deforestation rates in Papua New Guinea (PNG) are more rapid than the Brazilian Amazon. This high rate of forest degradation and loss largely impacts scientific understanding of biodiversity in PNG. While many factors have been linked to deforestation and land degradation in PNG, the relationship between agricultural practices and deforestation have not been fully examined. The effects of agricultural expansion have been overestimated in some areas due to population growth, the negative perception of swidden agriculture (slash-and-burn), and difficulties in discerning agriculture from logged areas in aerial imagery. To examine how swidden agricultural strategies contribute to land cover changes a coastal village was selected. This village, Kamiali, has thwarted logging industry advances and maintained primary forest cover. To assess agricultural and land use changes participatory research was conducted and responses were linked to land cover change via aerial imagery.
Temporal analyses of satellite imagery revealed that cultivated area in Kamiali has increased by 9% between 1992 and 2010 despite an estimated population growth of 63%. Thus, agricultural strategies other than expansion were employed to sustain the population. Interviews supported intensification strategies, which included 1) shortened fallows, 2) an increase in crops planted per area, and 3) new cultivar and crop introductions. The intensification was supported with brightness-wetness index, a tasseled cap band subtraction analysis. Image differencing then suggested a temporal increase in crop coverage and density. These results show that subsistence agriculture has influenced land cover changes, but has not been a major contributor to deforestation rates in Kamiali.

Communities in Indonesia’s Tanimbar Archipelago retain strong traditional resource management systems and have a history of resisting exploitation of their fragile islands by outsiders. But Tanimbar is poor and remote, so there is a desire for development. In this presentation, Yves Laumonier describes how a joint project with the International Center for Research in Agricultural Developmnet (CIRAD), CIFOR, and Birdlife Indonesia, successfully combined local concerns and national priorities in land-use planning using an participatory, ecosystem-based approach. The presentation, which has implications for community-based land-use planning in other parts of Indonesia, was given on 6 December 2011 at the 25th international congress of the Society for Conservation Biology. The theme of the congress was ‘Engaging Society in Conservation’ and more than 1,300 scientists, practitioners and students of conservation biology from around the globe attended.

We explore methodologies that allow conclusions to be drawn from the large Poverty Environment Network (PEN) dataset. First, we characterize the diverse parts of the tropics in terms of factors that influence forest resources, access and livelihoods. Secondly, for the conclusions drawn from the site-based analysis to be useful for roader policy recommendations, we need to know the extrapolation domains. We compared the characteristics of landscapes where PEN studies took place with overall tropical landscapes, and those of PEN villages with 'random' villages. Both methods rely on variables derived from global data sets using spatial analysis. Thirdly, we study the relationships of livelihoods and forests using multilevel regression analysis. Our study suggests that for global comparative analysis, it is necessary to identify the overall variation of the system of interest, to define the extrapolation domain of the samples/study sites, and to address relationships that by nature involve multiple scale processes. Available global data set, advances in spatial techniques and relatively cheap computer storage and computational power allow such analysis to be done, adding value through global comparative analysis of the interesting site-level findings.

Associate Professor Sean Connell presents the topic ‘Policy responses to a drying climate may save Adelaide's kelp forests’. Sean’s seminar is based on 10 years of experimental analyses of observations derived from the natural history of temperate Australian kelp forests. Theory-centric observations can hamper science and he happily admits where his prior biases have caused mistaken starts. Sean argues that if such bias of theory-centric science can be recognised as a possible model, its correctness can be investigated. Sean notes that a modern bias is our culture for alarming news of ecosystem change, he sees it as playing an increasing role in ecology; in not only what is funded and published, but also in how data is acquired and interpreted. Sean indicates that less research seems constructed to survive beyond short-term headlines. He passionately advocates that if we can recognise the theory-laden traps that seek to account for the will-o'-the-wisp, we may return value to research programs that are less about chasing ambulances and wild geese.
The role of mangroves in the fight against climate changeCIFOR-ICRAF
Vietnam is one of the few tropical countries that has increased its forest cover over the past several years, so it plays a unique and important role in global discussions on the importance of forests in combating climate change, sustaining people’s livelihoods and safeguarding biodiversity. Vietnam is also one of five countries expected to be most affected by climate change, due to its long coastline and stretched natural resources.
CIFOR scientist Daniel Murdiyarso gave this presentation on the importance of mangroves for climate change mitigation and adaptation at a journalist training workshop on ‘Investing in coastal ecosystems’ held on 27–29 March 2012 in Da Nang City, Vietnam. Media plays a critical role in informing and influencing public perception, as well as informing policymakers. But aside from limited coverage, most environmental articles, and those on climate change and REDD in particular, are of low quality in Vietnam, most notably in objective reporting of scientific findings. To address these gaps and in response to requests, CIFOR organised a series of media trainings in Vietnam in association with Transparency International, IUCN, UN-REDD and the National Journalism Association.

18. Conclusions
• Conservation areas encompass 24.4% of the
country’s land area almost meeting the 25% target.
And appr. 84% remains under forest cover.
• Mangrove forest, swamp forest, beach forest and
riparian forest are poorly represented and not
sufficient to protect ecological integrity (pop. viability?).
• Most of PAs are located in high altitude
aiming to protect head watershed and not
properly distributed.
19. Recommendations
Management Implications:
• Reconsider the policy targets: 50% forest
cover and 30% conservation forest (ambitious).
• Propose underrepresented ecosystems as
priorities for new NP/WS or other forms.
• In general, preservation of remaining PAs/Con
is more important than adding more new areas.
20. Recommendations
Future Research:
• Integrate species distribution, aquatic/marine
ecosystems, climate and LU change
(historical range?)
• Increase mapping resolution (200 m to ≈ 50 m)
to capture unique/remnant ecosystem (wetland)
• Prioritize ecosystem & species conservation
targets according to its conservation status
and proportion of coverage.
