HOW TENSION IS
CREATED
How to Create Tension?
From my research, I have found out tension can be created in a variety of ways, for
example a lot of thriller films use close ups, instead having a wide shot, not only does
this provoke more emotion, but allows the audience to focus on one thing.
Furthermore this gives a more claustrophobic feel and makes the audience feel more
in closed, as it can make a big place seem very small.
This focus from the audience, can also be maintained by keeping a shot static, or
zooming in slowly, for a long period of time, I believe this makes the audience
concentrate and try looking for things in the shot to decipher the storyline. Having
the shot not cut to anything else, slows down the pace of the film and can make a
scene have a lot of tension.
The use of music is very important tool to build tension, having a high tempo fast
soundtrack, can mimic a heart beating quickly, which will make a scene seem more
tense, this could also be used to build up to a climax. To contrast this the use of
silence, allows the audience to think and try to figure out what will happen next.
Having a scene be really quiet and having the small sounds be loud, for example the
person breathing, their heart beating, or even the clicking of a gun, this brings the
audience in for a moment and captures their attention.
EXAMPLE 1 : TAKEN
How is tension created: TAKEN
A clear example of how tension is created can be seen in
the film "Taken", The scene where the daughter is taken
by the men. She is on the hone to her dad whilst the
kidnappers are getting closer, when she goes to the room
under the bed, we see a quick montage of lots of little
shorts clips, this starts the tension, the music have a low
tempo and is slow, this adds to the eerie ness. The whole
scene goes quiet and then the girl starts to speak and is
snatched from under the bed, this is very unexpected and
is the climax to the scene, we then see a shot that is a
uncut of the sounds of her screaming whilst it zooms in
slowly to Liam neesons face, only hearing her screams
and not seeing them is more effective for the audience,
as we are put in the same position as the protagonist and
have to picture what is going on.
EXAMPLE 2 : NO COUNTRY FOR OLD
MEN
How Tension is created : No Country For Old
Men.
In this scene, we see two characters, woody
Harlesden is walking up and the stairs and a
man sneaks up behind him, the clip of him
walking up the stairs is almost silent, it is
uncut meaning the sequence of the clip is not
interrupted, this slows down the pace of the
whole film, and makes the audience focus on
what is happening as there is little going on.
The next scene shows both characters sitting
in a chair facing each other, this scene is also
quite and make a the audience focus on what
they are saying. This silence is broken by a
loud telephone noise, this can be seen as the
climax of the scene, as this is also when the
man kills woody Harlesden.
EXAMPLE 3: A Fistful Of Dollars
This film was created in 1968, we see
Clint Eastwood approach two men, we
hear them make conversation , and then
an ear piercing loud tone begins playing,
we see many close ups of everyone's
eyes, the clips are long , which creates
more tension. The scene then climax's
when Clint takes out his gun, the scene
speeds but dramatically and we see
many short clips of the other two men
being shoot. Clint eastwood then walks
away.
EXAMPLE 4: SIXTH SENSE
How Tension Created in : Sixth Sense
In this scene we see , a young boy going to the
toilet, the scene is quiet and his peeing is very
loud, this captures the audiences attention and
makes the focus on what is going on in the
frame , then the temperature of the room
drops, and music starts playing, this is
conventional music for a psycological thriller
film. This starts to build tension as it starts to
fasten pace. There is a close up of the boy
turning around slowly, this creates an more
enclosed feel, and makes the audience feel less
uncomfortable, He then goes the kitchen, music
is still building up , and then he walks to the
kitchen to see a ghost and the music climax's.
