1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
2. Sound
Throughout the opening sequence music is used to create a relaxed opening and
to allow the audience to not suspect the coming event. It does not go to the
extent of films such as ‘Stepbrothers’ with ‘rock’ music in the opening sequence
as its not just a comedy movie, its a romantic comedy. However it differs from
the music used in films such as ‘Children of Men’ as it is lighthearted and music
is used behind the speaking to enable the audience to relax and get an
understanding of the film.
To avoid the sound of moving cars and people disrupting our film we have also done
a voice over on the scenes when Taylor and Louis are walking in the beginning
of the opening scene. Also subtitles will appear as Louis is texting on his phone
while he walks. I think this is quite different to normal media products as it llows
younger people to relate as texting has become a lot more popular from
generation to generation and I think it gives our opening sequence a unique
edge.
3. Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene is casual. All characters are dressed casually similar to
comedy’s such as ‘Stepbrothers’ to not drag away from the actual subject matter.
However I am dressed slightly smarter to make sure I come across as the stuck-up
female who causes suspicion amongst the audience from the beginning.
I believe films such as ‘13 going on 30’ are too bright and colorful and although its all
part of the comedy element it forces the film to lose its maturity to quite a large
extent. I then brings the target audience down into the ‘teen girl category’, but the
mise-en-scene of our film keeps it mature and therefore enjoyable for all age groups.
A street setting is used and then a restaurant is used. It creates a good compact
environment to intensify the emotions felt by the characters. Also the humiliation as
Louis and Taylor realise they have been set up as well as my embarrassment as I’m
caught is made even funnier by the fact that others in restaurant are witnessing it all
unfold. This sort of impact is comparable to the hilarious fight se=cene in
‘stepbrothers’ when both main male characters are surrounded by a group of
neighbors as they fight like children. The fact that everyone is witnessing them
makes it all the more hilarious.
4. Camera Angles/Shots
In our final sequence we have used a variety of camera angles and shots to make
sure we attain the best angles to fully capture the actions and emotions experienced
within each scene. Like a lot of media products we use close ups of the faces in the
final scene to capture the shock each character feels. As a group we’ve attempted a
variety of shots including Taylor and Louis being filmed separately walking towards
one another and then a slight close-up as they meet followed by the walking towards
the camera in conversation and then me following them from behind. The relaxed
filming techniques again reinforce the unassuming events to come. It also fits in with
the ‘casual’, relaxed atmosphere of the first couple of scenes. Similar to most films
we use choppy camera shots jumping from character to character in close-ups to
intensify the more shocking moments.
