1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN PRODUCTS AND
ANCILLARY TEXTS?
2. T YPOGRAPHY
One way in which the combinati on of my main product and my ancillar y
texts are ef fective is through the use of their typography. Despite the
colour dif ference, the same font for the title of my horror trailer appear s
on all forms of my media products.
I used the same font for the title of my film ‘Reprisal’, on all forms of my
media products in order for there to be an instant link between all three.
The audience would be able to find a link between all three of the products
making them recognisable.
I also wanted the audience to be able to make a link between the
typography and the genre of horror. The font is like the words have been
scratched on, which works well with the wooden fenced back ground in my
film poster. The scratched font represents insanity, which plays a role in
my horror trailer, with the antagonist being controlled by the sense of
revenge.
3. DOUBLE IDENTIT Y OF ANTAGONIST
The double identity of the antagonist within my horror products plays an
impor tant role in creating a sense of horror for the audience, and matching
horror conventions.
My two ancillar y products, the film magazine and the film poster, best
express the double nature of the antagonist, easing the audience in
wanting to see the film. The devilish half of the antagonist is linked to the
conventi on of an evil character, which is always used in the horror genre,
whether it be an alien or a monster. Through using this conventi on, the
audience immediately knows that the film has a disturbed antagonist,
making them want to see the film, also identifying the youthful age that
the film represents, because of the obvious age of the antagonist,
attracting the targeted audience.
The two-sided antagonist expresses the horror of the film,
conveying the darkness and supernaturalism the film holds. The
genre of my horror project that I fir st chose was to be
supernatural horror. In order to show this, I had to show a dark
side of the antagonist, symbolising death and ghostly aspects
which the film would have.
4. ICONOGRAPHY
Visual Style – The colour s of the typography and the colour s of the
antagonists costume convey evil, blood and danger. The title ‘Reprisal’ in
my film poster is red, and in both the film poster and magazine, the
antagonist is wearing a grey and black hoodie. This is a typical conventi on
of the horror genre.
The antagonist has his hood up in all three of my media products. For the
two ancillar y products, the hood creates low key lighting, another
conventi on of the horror genre. This conveys the darkness of the film.
Also, the iconography of the antagonist creates fear, the purpose of horror.
5. OVERALL
My two ancillary texts play an important part in which provoke
the audience to want to go see the film, adding a further
dimension of mystery and horror. The ancillary texts make the
audience want to find out the answer to the antagonists
revenge and explore through the film the evil side he has.
I believe that all three media products are very ef fective and
use enough conventions in order the convey the horror genre.
The conventions make the audience realise the dark horror in
which the film holds create a sense of fear. Furthermore, this
encourages the audience to purchase or view my media
products.
