Reading engages multiple areas of the brain. When we read, we experience the events described as if we were a character in the story. fMRI research has identified the brain regions activated during reading, including the temporal lobe which handles phonological awareness and sound decoding, the frontal lobe which handles speech production, reading fluency, grammar usage and comprehension, and the angular and supramarginal gyri which serve as an "reading integrator" linking different brain areas to execute the action of reading. Learning about the brain regions involved in reading provided insight into how reading affects the brain for days after finishing a book.
