HOW CONSUMERS USE
TECHNOLOGY AND ITS
IMPACT ON THEIR LIVES
Presented by: Fabio Siccardi
Introduction
The fundamental principal of evolution is adaptation, and so
as technology evolves so do humans adapt to it. We have
reached a point where we are dependant on technology, not
only for convenience but also to help us alleviate the
congestion in our everyday life. Technology has changed the
way we do business , shop and how we interact as a society,
as a whole. This rapid growth of technology has seamlessly
become part of our everyday lives.
Access to the internet
The internet is the pillar of
modern information society.
With the implementation of
infrastructure and lowering
cost of internet anyone can get
access to the internet.
According to Statista as of
January 2021 there were 4.66
billion active internet users
worldwide - 59.5 percent of the
global population. Of this total,
92.6 percent (4.32 billion)
accessed the internet via
mobile devices. Factors that
impact access are
commerce, social interaction,
politics, culture and daily life.
Poorer nations have still a long
way to go (pewresearch.org,
2016).

difference in the global access
to internet. Nations with a
strong and well developed
economy far outweigh the
rest.

steadily increased over time versus mobile internet speed where it has had a rapid increase over a time
span of 3 years , 141.4% faster when comparing July 2021 to July 2018

online via a smartphone, but two-thirds also say that they use a laptop or desktop computer to access the internet.
However, once again, things vary considerably by country.
Digital devices used by audiences
How consumers search for information
According to Lars, consumers search for
information in two different ways internally
and externally.
Internally: by own experience
Externally: Friend , internet or supplier.
92% of internet searches are done through
Google ( Neo360.Digitaly, 2021)
50% of all search's online are voice search
(Georgiev, 2021)
Mobile Visiual search (MVS) is growing

Google ranked as the top search engine globally
What consumers buy online
According to statista 60% of all
online purchases are mainly books,
music, movies and video games.
Furniture, homeware and groceries
are still the biggest in-store
purchased goods. The main reasons
for this are: experiencing the
product, expert advice, Immediate
availability of the product and
customer experience ( collectique,
2021)
According to Businesses.com there
are hundreds of online services
available today: from mentoring,
personal, financial and security.

Online video consumption
According to Jonathan Barnard, at
Zenith, online video consumption is
growing rapidly, and consumers will
spend more time viewing online
video than conventional TV, fueling
rapid growth in demand from
advertisers, making online video the
fastest-growing digital channel.
The average person will spend 100
minutes every day watching online
videos in 2020. This is a 19%
increase compared to daily viewing
minutes in 2019, which stood at 84.(
Chaffey, 2020)
78% of users watch videos online
weekly, and 55% view online videos
daily. (HubSpot).

video consumption has change over time and also the expected
video marketing cost online and traditional TV in the US.
Major social media networks
have invested a great deal of
money to develop their video
platforms.
34% of marketers are making use
of Facebook’s live streaming
options, creating in-the-moment
videos that allow viewers to react
in real-time. (Chaffey, 2020)

Consumer Trends
Global internet access has constantly been growing over the years with +/_ 4.93 billion people having
access to and use the internet frequently. From 2000 to 2020, the usage of the internet increased by
1,266%. (broadbandsearch.net)
The global smartphone user base has risen dramatically from just 30k people in 1994 to 1.00 billion in
2012, and a record 3.95 billion today in June 2021. That is an estimate 50% of the total global population
(Wu, 2021)
Consumers have an increased demand for transparency when searching for information online.
Consumers want faster delivery time when making an online purchase.( Forbes, 2021)
Due to the pandemic consumers are looking for the contactless experience, and in so doing accelerate
the virtual reality experience ( Cardona, 2020)
Consumers are switching brands at unprecedented rates in response to economic pressures, store
closings, and changing priorities.( Charm, 2021)
In 2020, 96% of consumers increased their online video consumption, and 9 out of 10 viewers said that
they wanted to see more videos from brands and businesses.( Sarika, 2021)
The Internet has changed the way we make and experience nearly all media and has
placed the consumer in a more central and influential role than ever before.
Since the introduction of smart phones and mobile devices people have changed the way
they socialize, shop and do business, but it’s those business that put the consumers
needs first that are in a winning position.
Online shopping and business is here to stay, for us to function as a society staying
connected is no longer a luxury but a necessity.
