21. SUMMARY
As the internet continues to evolve, the devices we use get smaller, and the speed of connection gets faster. Consumers are
demanding higher speed connection as it enables many online activities in our daily lives. Demand remains even after the
lockdown as working from home has become a new work dynamic.
Before the internet, finding information or purchasing a product or service could only be done through word of mouth or
walking into brick-and-mortar shops to compare similar products. Now, with a mobile and the internet in your pocket, it has
become so convenient and easy to access that we can find information or the cost of a product at a touch of a fingertip.
E-commerce has grown significantly over the years, becoming a multi-trillion industry. People are now going online shopping to
get their groceries, and clothes and even booking tickets to the cinemas. Therefore, having an online presence for businesses is
very important. It also helps companies to build credibility and trust and be perceived as a thought leaders in their industry. It
also allows you to stay connected with your consumers and provides opportunities to attract and cast a wider net to your target
audiences.
As more companies adopt digital presence, marketers must consider many ways to attract their audiences. Video marketing has
proven to be one of the most effective ways of attracting and engaging consumers. We can share videos through various social
media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
In a nutshell, consumers play an essential part in driving technology. With technology advancing so quickly, what are we
expecting next?
22. SCRIPT FOR PRESENTATION
Hello everyone, today. I want to share how technology has evolved over the years and impacted our daily lives. I remember when my parents first got me a computer in the 1990s,
it was big and bulky. We must connect our laptop to the landline and a modem box. And if we were to use the computer, we would not be able to make phone calls. The dial-up
tone, which rang from your modem box, was rather loud. That makes us very difficult to sneakily use the computer for hours at night when they are in bed! The internet then was
also new, slow, and expensive. The only search engine we had then was only yahoo. It is so different from the devices we use to access the internet now.
As technology advances, we no longer use these big bulky computers. Instead, we can now surf the internet with the small ‘computer’ we call the mobile phone. According to the
statistic for Jan 2021, there are 5.31billion mobile users and 4.96 billion internet users. This is an increase of 95million mobile users in one year. Internet users have also doubled in
10 years, with an annual 4% increment as of 2021.
In 2019, when the pandemic hit us, the lockdowns forced everyone to work and study from home. This has also caused everyone in the household to gain access to the internet.
The statistic shows the yearly increment of UK households accessing the internet. In 2020, 96% of the family in the UK reported having had access to the internet. That means
almost everyone in the UK with only 4% of the household in the UK having no internet access.
As more people gain access to the internet, consumers are demanding faster-speed services. Internet speed in the UK has increased remarkably from 3.67mbps to 18.75mbps in
2017.
As I mentioned, we relied only on big bulky computers to access the internet in the past. Now, we have many more choices ranging from smartphones to smartwatches.
This survey was done over three months, from Jan 2020 – March 2020. We have 2419 respondents, with 60% saying they use a smartphone while 8% use a desktop PC to access
the internet. This survey tells us that the number of people using smartphones to access the internet has overtaken laptops and PC.
In the past, we have only yahoo as a search engine. Now we have more than 50 search engines available to consumers. There are three different categories of why people use
search engines.
• Navigational queries.
This is to find a specific website/webpage, for example, Facebook or Sainsbury.com.
• Transactional Queries
This is where people search for a product/service with the intent to purchase, e.g., movie tickets/flight tickets.
• Informational Queries on why people use search engines too.
• This is to find out more information or to learn something. Not to buy nor look for specific websites/webpages. One of the, e.g. would be a recipe for chicken curry.
23. With many new brands popping up, comparison pricing has become a new practice for online consumers. It allows the consumers to compare the same products with different retailers
and get the best lowest deal.
And we can even search for reviews online for a product and services before deciding to purchase. Social media such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have made it easier for families
and friends to stay connected.
We can even go onto the internet to use the discussion boards to search for any information and answers to any specific questions and topics.
Voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, and google help us to search the internet through our mobile phones, laptops and smart speaker.
The Internet has also impacted how consumers shop. In the past, consumers will have had to go to brick-and-mortar shops to get their products and services. Now, more people have
turned to online shopping as it is convenient and allows them to compare prices.
The electronics industry has gained a 13% increase year-on-year, ranking in the highest amount consumers spend.
The fashion and toys industry increased by 17% and 18% yearly.
Physical distancing and stay-at-home orders have forced whole consumer segments to shop differently. A few months into COVID-19, consumer shopping online has increased
significantly across many categories. Consumer intent to shop online continues to grow, especially in the essentials and home-entertainment categories. More interestingly, these habits
seem like they’re going to stick as US consumers report an intent to shop online even after the COVID-19 crisis. Categories where expected growth in online shoppers exceeds 35 per
cent include essentials such as over-the-counter (OTC) medicine, groceries, household supplies, and personal-care products. Even discretionary categories such as skincare and makeup,
apparel, and jewellery and accessories show expected customer growth of more than 15 per cent.
The eCommerce continues to grow significantly by over half a trillion dollars since 2021, reaching USD 3.85 trillion altogether for a year. (Charm, Coggins, Robinson and Walkie, 2022)

essentials. The chart shows the percentage growth for people shopping for the first time since 2020.

81% of marketers have reported that video marketing directly impacts the business, increasing sales.
According to the table, YouTube users rank as the second most visited website, with 14.34billion visits.

There are no signs of slowing down.
This overview of the number of social media users; will show you how critical and how much social media has grown today. As of July 2022, there are 4.70billion people worldwide using
social media. This is more than half of the world’s population. Over the last year, there have been 227 million new users, with an average of 2 hours and 29 mins spent daily on social
media. This is an increase of 3.5% more time on social media compared to last year.
Facebook remains the top social media platform, followed by YouTube. The revolutions of social media have become an essential marketing tool for businesses and influencers to
promote their products and help them with their personal branding.
