Profitability: SaaS Versus On Premise SolutionsAspire Systems
SaaS is being increasingly adopted and is even considered a savior model in this economy due to the zero upfront CAPEX for buyers. Still the question remains if SaaS is a profitable model for solution providers? Regardless of the longer sales cycles, is the on-premise solution providing faster break-even?
This webinar moderated by Aspire Systems, where Amy Wohl of Wohl Associates and Alex Ginger, Director of Active Operations Management International, a SaaS provider discussed the two business models, in light of the current economic situation.
Some of key topics discussed were:
- Cost factors – developmental, operational and marketing costs
- Revenue factors – sales cycle, pricing models, etc.
- Benefits/drawbacks of both the business models
- Will a hybrid pricing/delivery model provide better benefits?
You Don't Need IT To Do That - The World of Outsourcing and SaaSKyle James
Hosting your website on campus not only has it's own risks but there are probably more "hidden costs" than you are aware.
The same can be said for trying to deploying your own streaming media server, digital asset management system, course catalog management system or countless other technology tools. Many of these tools are needed by the people that handle marketing and are increasingly being migrating towards the web.
In this thought provoking presentation Kyle hopes to start the discussion about why we do many of the technology projects the way we do and ask if there is a better, more cost effective way to do them. This isn't an us vs them debate but a how can we do more with less (people and/or budget).
Disclaimer: I'm not saying IT is bad or evil I'm hoping to start a discussion that is long overdue about how and why we do projects the way before. I spent three years in Higher Ed IT so I can relate to both sides.
IT Governance can seem like a daunting challenge especially in today's complex environment with many applications migrating to the cloud. But it doesn’t have to be!
Organizations are increasingly turning to Cloud-based options in order to deliver services to the business. While you may have outsourced the delivery of these services to the cloud, the IT organization still is responsible for overall service delivery. So how do you get your arms around something so "nebulous" as the Cloud?

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
