Welcome back
to your
tutorial.
In Part 1 of our
tutorial, we got
to know
about Hotjar – the
company and
the app.
We also learned
about the
“tracking code”
w/o which we
cannot start Hotjar.
Lastly, we were
able to discuss
about Heatmaps -
the 1st of
4 Analysis tools
of of
For this tutorial,
we will look into
the remaining 3
analysis tools:
-Visitor Recording
- Conversion Funnels
- Form Analytics.
Let’s start off
with…
2) VISITOR
RECORDINGS
Recordings allow you to
see how visitors use,
behave and interact
with your site as if
you were looking over
their shoulder.
You can replay it anytime,
make observations and
take notes and easily
filter it according
to parameters
provided by Hotjar.
Recording
Visitor Sessions
Go back to your site
dashboard and
from the sidebar menu
click Recordings.
You will see the
Recordings page.
Scroll down to the
bottom of the page
until you see this
video. Please watch
and listen so you’ll
have an easier grasp
of the hows and whats
of visitor recordings.

Once done, you can
now start recording by
clicking on the green
Record Visitors button.
You will see the Record
Visitors page where
you can adjust the settings
for your recordings.
1) Quantity/Snapshot size
– Select the # of
recordings Hotjar has to
generate for a snapshot.
In this case, this has
been pre-determined
based on the plan
you availed of.
Each batch of recording
is called a “snapshot”.
The snapshot size
is the actual # of
visitors from whom
data will be recorded.
Next, click on Page
Targeting or
click Done on the
upper right to go to…
2) Page Targeting –
allows you to “run”
recordings on specific
pages of your site.
Again, this has been
preset based on your
Hotjar plan – Basic, Plus
or Business.
Click Done or
click Recording Options
to move on to
3) Recording Options
- w/ the Basic Plan, you can
choose both options,
just one or the other
or none of the options.

Once you’ve made your
choice, click Done
or Start Recording
to begin.
You’re good to go!
Hit the green button
and you’re back in
your site dashboard.
Here in the Recordings
Page you can
edit settings
and also Stop
Recordings.
Once a recording
actually starts, it will
appear in the Recording
List similar to this.
On this list you will
see specific details
(in columns) of each
recorded visitor session -
user ID, country, pages
recorded, # of pages
recorded, recording
duration, device used,
operating system
(OS) & browser used
and date recorded.
You will also see
on the upper right
the # of visitor sessions
already recorded.
On the left side, you
will see the pages
of recorded sessions.
You can also select the
# of recordings you
want to view per page.
To mark recordings as
“favorite”, click on
the star of that
recording to turn
it yellow.That way,
you can easily
go back to it later.
find and access
it anytime.
Recordings can also
be shared with those
who don’ have access to
your Hotjar account.
Just click on the
Share recording arrow
of that particular
recording session
to see this box.
Click or toggle the
switch on the left side
to create a URL
for that recording.
To listen to a
recording, simply
click on the green
Play button of
that particular session
to start listening.
Recording
Filters
The Recordings Filters
feature is found
on the right side of the
Recordings page.
The Filters feature
offers a list of variables
you can choose from
to sort through
a considerable amount
of visitor sessions.
These are grouped into
the Recording attributes
and the Visitor attributes.
This is especially
helpful when you want
to view recordings
narrowed down to
a particular parameter
like “All Devices.”
Recording Session
Now let’s open a
sample recording session
and acquaint ourselves
with its different elements.
At the bottom part and
at the right side
of the screen,
you will see the
different features
that we will discuss
one by one.
Let’s start with the
playback settings
You can pause the
recording anytime or
replay it if you want to.
Click this button
to adjust the
speed of the playback.
Default playback
speed is 1x.
You can also skip
portions where
there is no clicking or
cursor movement.
Just click on
“Skip Pauses”.
You also have the
option to view the
playback in full screen
mode by clicking
on the rightmost icon of
the playback tab .
Now, what about the
colored dots / lines
you see on the
playback timeline?
Each and every action
of your site visitor is
represented by
a line or colored dot.
You can hover your
mouse over each stroke
to see what it means.
But here’s a breakdown
of what the color
of a line or dot means
for your reference:
-represents each click
on an element on a page
-visitor has reloaded the
current page or has
moved on to another
page
-represents each time
the visitor scrolls on a
current page
- represents each time
your visitors interacts
with a form element
(eg. textfield).
- change in your
visitor’s screen size
Space (no color)
- when the visitor is
idle / not interacting
with the page
Now let’s take a look
at the Session info
on the right hand side
of the recording screen.
Each recorded session
has this. It appears in
your playback screen &
also on the Recordings list
You will see info like
user ID and country,
recording ID, date, OS
and browser used,.
You can also check
out user notes
and actions by clicking
“Notes & Actions”
or the underlined # of
actions & notes below.
You will see a dropdown
list of user actions
& notes for that particular
recorded session.
To see and listen to a
sample recording,
click on Product Tour
at the Hotjar homepage.
Scroll down to
Visitor Recordings
and click “View
sample recording”.
Click Play and/or try
to click the different
buttons on the
playback tab for a
more interactive
experience.

After that
informative
walkthrough,
let us move on to
another Hotjar
Analysis tool…
CONVERSION
FUNNELS
A Hotjar funnel is a
wonderful way of
identifying at which step
and on what page
visitors’ interest tapers
off making them
leave your site
prematurely.
Once identified, you
can now correct and
improve these to increase
your site’s flow
and ultimately, its
conversion rate.
It is important to
remember and define
what your site’s goal
is – an order/sale,
registration or sign-up,
lead generation, etc…
Then start to make one
funnel for every goal.
That’s the general rule.
Come!!!
Let’s make a funnel
to better know
how it works!
First, go back to your
site dashboard
and Click “Funnels.”
The Funnels page
will appear.
Click to see
the funnel create page
so you can start to
enumerate the pages
you want your
funnel to track.
Create a name for
your funnel.
Next, enter the
names of the pages
you want to track.
Choose an appropriate
targeting option
by clicking the button .
Choose one from the
dropdown list or
just go for the default
type - Simple Match.

Once you’ve chosen
the match option,
type in the
corresponding URL.
You may add more
steps if needed.
Once you complete the
steps, you may now
click “Create Funnel”.
The newly-made funnel
will now be
added / will appear in
your Funnels list.
You can manage your
funnels in this list.
Click the small down
arrow icon to the right
and choose a task from
the dropdown list.
Click Edit and it will
bring you back
to the funnel create page.
You may also click
“Create a copy”
to create a duplicate
of your funnel.
Scroll down and click
“Create Funnel”
to show the copy
in the Funnels list.
To remove a funnel,
simply click “Delete”.
to open the prompt.
Choose and click on
a desired action.
To view a funnel, just
click the button
of the desired funnel
to see its report.
Funnel reports generated
are extremely insightful.
It lets you see the
flow of visitors,
at what step / page
visitors drop off and
the drop off rate vis-à-vis
the conversion rate.
You can even watch
actual recorded sessions
of drop offs and
conversions !!!
Once you can pinpoint
the specific spots
in your site where users
drop off, you can
concentrate improvement
on these “problem”areas
to enhance usability and
optimize conversion.
That’s how amazing
Hotjar’s funnel reports are.
Now for the last of
Hotjar’s analysis
tools…
FORM
ANALYTICS
Hotjar’s form report is
like no other.
It allows you to visualize
and quantify data
on form filling in your
site – which fields
take too long to
fill up (confusing),
which ones are left blank
and why visitors leave
without even interacting
with the form/s
and the page.
The information you
glean from the report
will guide you in making
the necessary changes
to your online forms to
increase completion rate.
Why don’t we try
our hands
at making one?
Go back to your
site dashboard
and click on “Forms.”
The Forms page
will appear.
Click the green “New
Form” button to open
the Form create page.
The # of sessions to be
recorded is already
predetermined based on
the Hotjar plan you use.
In this case,
it’s Hotjar’s Basic Plan
Next, fill in the details:
the form name and
the page URL where the
from can be found.
Then click
“Load Forms on Page”
and choose which form
you want to track.
Remember:
You can only track
one form per page.
Next, choose the fields
you want to track
according to your
need.You can rename
and rearrange
fields as well as
choose the appropriate
field type for each.
Hotjar supports
the following
form input field types:
* Text (short)
* Text area (long)
* "Select" dropdowns
* Checkboxes
* Radio buttons
* Create the form.
Once you click “Create
Form”, the form will
appear in your Forms list.
Here you can manage
your forms, view it
and check its status.
Here’s what the status
icons mean:
To see a form report,
click “View Report”
A full Form Analytic
Report looks like this:
“Problematic areas” are
highlighted in red ink.
Let’s define the metrics
used in a form report:
Sessions: visits to a page
in a specified form path.
Conversion rate:
% of successful form
submits / # of sessions
Interactions: visitor clicks
or taps on a field
Average interaction time:
time (in ms.) between the
first click/tap/tab
on a field
and the click/tap/tab
away from it.
Refill count – everytime a
visitor clicks/taps
on a field and changes
an existing entry.
Refill % = total refills
total interactions
Left blank = a field is left
empty /submitted blank.
Left blank % = total # of
times that blank fields
are submitted as a % of
total form submissions.
Dropoff – means that a
user left the website after
a specific field or
page in the form path.
Successful submit –
happens when a page
where a form is
loaded shows a
message that the form was
successfully submitted.
Failed submit – happens
when a page
where a form is loaded
shows a message
that the form was not
successfully submitted.
Knowing what the
metrics mean in the
form analytics report
makes it easier for you
to understand and
interpret it.
You can then make
changes and refinements
in your online form/s to
improve completion rate.
Higher
form completion
rate means
better website flow
and user experience
which means
higher site
conversion rate.

you have targeted
your goal – thanks to
