Be aware that many steps need to be taken to turn
research results into something that can be sold
 Many questions must be addressed before
achieving customer added vale & returns:
 What further investments are needed?
 Has the technology been validated?
 Are field trials needed?
 Professionalizing your solution?
 Making it ready for series production
 Packaging, Solution Marketing
 Cost & Quality assurance
 Supply Chain, Delivery
 Training, Cost-of-change
 Post-sales, Maintenance’

PhD or postdoc in industry: schemes
 Why not consider a stay in industry?
 When you want to connect state-of-the-art to state-of-the-use
 This should not compromise the quality of the research, only orient its goals to needs
originating from applications
 Several schemes exist that allow PhD and post-docs in industry
 Bilateral contracts between university and company
 EC Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA):
• Networks & doctoral schools (international): ITN, EID, EJD, …
• Individual fellowships: IF
 Regional personal mandates – e.g. in Flanders, with support of IWT Vlaanderen:
• Baekeland PhD programme
• Innovation Mandate (spin-off company or industry collaboration/tech transfer)
 When university is partner in an industrial R&D project (e.g. H2020, EUREKA, ITEA2
on European level, and IWT SBO / O&O / ICON on regional level in Flanders)

Trend for car industry:
Smart Systems Driving the Innovation Agenda
Electrical & Electronic content in the vehicle value
is increasing to over 40%
Up to 80% of future innovations will be based on
the use of some form of “intelligent systems”
Focus areas: chassis, body and powertrain:
• Performance & Comfort: power, brand, drivability, noise.
• Economy and Green Driving  engine and transmission control, energy
management, electrification…
• Safe driving  ABS, ESP, VDC, ADAS, V2V… up to smart infrastructure,

Trend for car industry: Lightweight Body Design to
meet CO2 emission norms
• Number 1 OEM change driver: fuel efficiency & emissions
• Regulation push on max CO2 norms requires both
powertrain innovation and lightweight materials
• OEMs are challenged to look into innovation in materials
• High strength (optimized) steels
• Aluminum/Magnesium
• Composites
• Potential weight gain to be obtained from Composite CFRP
(carbon fibre reinforced polymer) is bigge(r/st)
• Currently challenged by relative cost of (high end) CFRP /
% weight reduction & manufacturing challenges
(complete re-investment in manufacturing processes needed)
• Only when significant weights are saved on body (20-30%),
a ‘positive spiral’ of increased weight savings in driveline,
chassis/suspension, closures … can be achieved

Lightweight design challenge for industry:
Gaps in state of the art in predictive CAE for composites
• Stiffness, NVH (dynamic stiffness)
predictable with reasonable accuracy
• Failure modes (Strength, durability,
crash) much less predictable
• Many criteria available, none
universally applicable

PhD career development
in academia and in industry
• Perhaps 10% of PhDs will pursue
the academic ladder (up to full professor)
• 90% of starting PhDs will grow into
(leading) positions in industry and
society!
• And: industry determines the GDP, which is
positively correlated with university funding!
Conclusions for academia:
• Dual funnel role & responsibility!
• Equip PhD students with an open mind
towards industrial and societal issues,
and foster their skills to address them!
• This applies to doctoral schools, industry-
involved PhDs (as IWT Flanders Baekeland)
and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme

 The Recruitment is the key factor in personal PhD mandates!
 Where do candidates for our PhD positions come from?
 Option 1) we know the candidate already:
• As job student or thesis student at our premises
• As MSc student at a university we’re in touch with
• As R&D employee expressing interest into PhD
 Option 2) we do not yet know a candidate for a new topic:
• Open call for applicants, evaluate incoming CVs
• Leverage our network of R&D contacts
Recruitment: how do we find the researchers, and
how do the researchers find us?
 Success factors for recruitment:
 Right candidate for the project & right project for the candidate !
 Relevant PhD topic in challenging and appealing R&D environment
 Publish vacancy & contact the right network channels for candidates
 Multiple Interviews (first telco, then face to face) with candidate, involving several colleagues
 two-way interaction: candidate gets to know us, and we get to know the candidate
 Establish long-lasting relationships with academia and their students
