Capital expenditures (CAPEX) are long-term investments that generate future benefits extending beyond the current tax year. CAPEX includes spending on acquiring or improving fixed assets. Operating expenses (OPEX) are ongoing costs for running a business, product, or system, such as paper, toner, utilities and salaries. While CAPEX is capitalized, OPEX can be deducted from taxes in the current year.
