What is ‘Hookup culture’?
▰ It’s difficult to define hookup culture in a streamlined fashion. Essentially, the
hookup culture consists of two people engaging in a casual relationship, with no
strings attached.
▰ It gives rise to the idea that one is free to indulge in sexual/semi-sexual and
emotional activity with multiple people at the same time, without having to owe
their loyalties to anyone.
▰ Meeting someone on a dating app, in a bar or simply through a set-up is what
drives this culture. A fear of commitment and intensity leads to people
formulating unemotional bonds with others to feed their needs. Friends,
strangers, acquaintances and even co-workers can enter into casual relationships
that contribute to the existence of this ‘hookup culture’.
HISTORY OF HOOKUPS
▰ The rise of hookups, a form of casual sex that had its beginnings in the 1920s.
Historians D'Emilio and Freedman put the beginning of casual sex, including
college hookups. Lisa Wade, a sociologist, documents states that In 19th-
century white men often had what would be called hookup sex with
prostitutes, poor women, and the women they had enslaved.
▰ Homosexual men also engaged in hookup sex during the 1800s, meeting in
spaces that were transient in nature, such as whare houses and boarding
houses. Since the 1920s, there has been a transition from an age of courtship
to an era of hookup culture.
▰ After world war 2, Technological advancements happened, such as the
automobile and movie theaters, which brought young couples out of their
parents' homes, and out from their watchful eyes, giving them more freedom
and more opportunity to engage in casual sexual activity.
The Millennial Point of View
▰ The millennial generation in India has
developed a culture that is in a sense
‘commitment-phobic’. We look for
people to have a fun time with, rather
than investing ourselves in supposedly
serious relationships.
▰ This idea is fed by the existence and
popularity of dating apps like Tinder,
Bumble and Hinge, among others. Flirty
conversations that lead to a formal first
date that perhaps culminates in a casual
hookup.
Societal Impact
Casual sex or any non-committal sexual encounter, between two consenting
individuals is not something that we need to roll our eyes at. Hook up culture
doesn’t necessarily have to be perceived as the youth being lazy to agree to any
kind of efforts necessary to build a relationship.
▰ The idea is to help people associate with their sexuality and promote notions
of sexual liberation, body positivity and sex positivity.
▰ It has given people the freedom to choose, understand and experiment
with themselves, without putting pressure on another person.
▰ Normalization of sex is one area, where hook up culture has helped us,
by becoming more open about physical intimacy and sexual diversity.
▰ However, it has also opened a Pandora’s box of sex, that up until now,
was only a word used in hushed tones behind closed doors and given
room to a lot of people to shape their personal relationship with it.
Pros of Hookup Culture on
Mental Health
▰ Being in a casual sexual relationship – long term or short term – can help someone
explore their sexual interests. The beauty of hookup culture is if you are not
sexually compatible with the person, you do not need to engage in sexual activity
with them again. Hookup culture can remove the pressures that men and women
may feel to stay with someone when they are not sexually compatible. This can
help reduce anxiety and shame related to sexual discomfort.
▰ Sexual intercourse is a great way to decrease mental health symptoms such as
anxiety and depression. An orgasm releases feel good neurotransmitters in the
brain, Casual sex allows people to enjoy the benefits of sex without the serious
commitment of a long-term intimate relationship.
Cons of Hookup Culture on
Mental Health
▰ Casual sexual encounters require that the people involved are safe and responsible. Having
multiple sexual partners increases the chances of contracting an STI so practicing safe sex
is an important part of participating in hookup culture. While many STIs are preventable
and/or curable, the stigma associated with STIs and lack of education on treatments can
have negative effects on young people’s mental health.
▰ Some people struggle with differentiating between their sexual desires and their romantic
desires. Relationships between hookup partners can become complicated if one person
becomes emotionally attached and the other does not. This can have negative effects on
one’s self-esteem and may increase stress and anxiety.
▰ Specifically on college campuses, many hookups take place at parties and/or in the
presence of drugs and alcohol. Being under the influence of any substance prevents
someone from giving or obtaining proper consent. Sexual trauma can take a huge toll on
someone’s mental health, and it is critical that if you choose to engage in casual sexual
encounters, you do so in a safe, consensual manner.
Dating Apps
▰ Dating apps are basically search tools. They use algorithms to make match
recommendations using your data, which includes personal info (like location and
age) as well as preferences you set in your app activity.
▰ Dating apps like Tinder are popular among youngsters and even teenagers for casual
hookups.
▰ Now days ,Dating apps also provides options to display your personal choices.
For example: if you are looking for anything serious or just a casual relationship.
Role of Sex Education among
Teenagers and Youngsters
▰ It helps to build their boundaries against sexual activities.
Providing Sex education to teenagers helps to recognize the difference between right or wrong.
▰ Using condoms & contraception while having sex.
It also includes complete knowledge about the use of contraception while having sex. It promotes which
contraception is best to use for teenagers.
▰ It also keeps youngsters safe from sexual abuse or sexual violence.
Sex Education gives enough knowledge about sexual behavior to keep teens away from sexual abuse or
sexual violence.
▰ It also reduces the number of sexual partners & to understand consent
The education motivates teens to take good & desired decisions about their sexual partners & also helps
to understand all about consent.
▰ Reducing the young age pregnancy rates & transfer of STIs.
Nowadays, the young age pregnancy rates have been increasing. If we impart sex education in teen’s
curriculum it will reduce the young age pregnancy rates. Sex ed encourages the use of condoms before
having sex that helps to avoid unintended pregnancies & the transfer of STIs.
Ways To Give Knowledge About Sex
Education
▰ Start to discuss with your child about
everyday activities such as menstruations &
pregnancies. Like, if there is a family
member who is pregnant tell them how a
baby develops inside the woman’s body.
▰ You can also allow your child to watch a
TV show about relationships & love for
some time.
▰ Parents should give their preteens children
knowledge about internet safety, sexting &
sexual abusing. They should know the
consequences of sharing nude photos.
▰ Teenagers should have enough knowledge
about drugs & alcohol’s impact.
CASE STUDY: DELHI VS
BOMBAY
The hookup culture in Delhi is somewhat different from the hookup culture in
Bombay.
▰ When in Delhi, dating apps like Tinder and Bumble help you find people who you can
casually indulge with, on a fairly regular basis. The idea of picking people up in bars, is
perhaps a little dormant in the capital.
▰ In Bombay, on the other hand, picking up people in bars is something that is very normal.
While bouncers and bar tenders may object to people hooking up in bars in Delhi, the case is
the exact opposite for Bombay. Hooking up with strangers is easier and is considered
legitimate in the city of dreams.
▰ Secondly, not to take away from the identity of Delhi, but people in Bombay are perhaps a
little more open and willing when it comes to hook ups. In Delhi, there is a lot of riff-raff
surrounding hook ups.
▰ Perhaps it’s the idea that Delhiites of a certain region are snobbish or have certain
qualification factors that need to be fulfilled before one can execute a successful hook up.
▰ In Bombay on the other hand, people are way more chill and accepting of people’s choices
and realities.
▰ Additionally, not a lot of places in Delhi are conducive to hooking up. A lot is logistical,
moral and safety issues plague the existence of the culture. In Bombay however, spaces are
conducive to it.
▰ The hookup culture has embedded itself deeply in the social structure of cities like Bombay
and Delhi. It is seen as a preferred form of intimacy, rather than indulging yourself
emotionally in the lives of others. The culture now, defines the love lives of people thriving
in metros.
CONCLUSION
▰ Overall, who you choose to engage in sexual
activity with and which is ultimately your
choice. There is no right or wrong when it
comes to sexual intercourse. Hookup culture
has both pros and cons, so making safe,
informed decisions can help protect your
physical, mental, and sexual health.
Thank You !!
