Thank you for participating in our recent Special Results Minneapolis roundtable conversation on
youth violence prevention. A roundtable meeting presents a unique opportunity for City staff,
leadership, elected officials, and stakeholders from outside agencies and organizations to engage in
robust discussions.
The Youth Violence Prevention Special Report presented by the Minneapolis Health Department
focused their data driven approach on identifying trends and opportunities to reduce youth violence.
From the discussion, three interrelated themes emerged. To reduce youth violence, it requires actions

Therefore, to reduce youth violence, it is necessary to make 'wraparound services' available to youth
also available to families. Without supporting families, efforts to curtail youth violence cannot be as
effective.
Theme: The Greater Minneapolis Community Has the Resources to Reduce Youth Violence.
A consistent theme that at–risk youth raise in discussions with community social workers is the
desire to have a job. Minneapolis has done a great deal of work in connecting youth to employers
through program such as 'Step–up' and 'Pathways'. These programs give any adolescence, at risk or
not, a unique opportunity to build purpose and nurture relationships with potential future employers.
These programs help to create positive life trajectories for youth.
The Minneapolis Public Schools' (MPS) has operated a highly successful afterschool program for
years. Over the last 15 years, the funding for the program has declined precipitously. Limited funds
have made it challenging for MPS to keep the program staffed with teachers, relying on an
inconsistent flow of volunteers instead. The afterschool program is an invaluable resource in the
effort to reduce youth violence. Instead of unsupervised and unstructured time, the program keeps
youth focused on completing homework, developing skills, exposes them to mentors, and allows

Youth And Youth Subcultures
Adolescence is the physiological developmental period between childhood and adulthood, known to
be a turbulent time of self–exploration and discovery. Hall (1904) described adolescence as a period
of 'storm and stress' associated with mood disruptions, parental conflict and risky behaviours.
Similarly, youth is a socially constructed phase, not defined by age or physical development, but
rather specific progressive phases and transitions. Youth fall between the full dependence of
childhood and independence of adulthood, described as partially dependent individuals that are in a
phase of self–exploration and development of identity (Furlong, 2013). Youth transitions are best
viewed as a process of identity development where young people draw on a range of influences,
experiences and relationships in the formation of their identity (Stokes & Wyn, 2007). Modern
youth transitions have seen an increased emergence of subjectivities in identity construction outside
of inherited characteristics. Perceived more as an ongoing process of integrating influences and
experiences through conscious action and self–reflection (Stokes & Wyn, 2007). Due to the distinct
lifestyles associated with youth there is an important cultural dimension associated with youth
transitions. Formation of different youth subcultures are a reflection of distinct styles, behaviours

Homeless youth are a standout amongst the most underestimated gatherings in our general public.
Numerous specialists recognize much more elevated amounts of different issue practices among
these adolescent contrasted with their non–homeless associates. The current study analyzed the

Homelessness is portrayed as circumstances of people or family units without steady, uninterrupted,

Youth And Social Construction
The intricate nature of youth means that while some argue it is a universal stage of life, it is seen by
many as a formation of sociocultural elements. Social construction can be defined as something that
has been shaped by the values, interests or practices of a culture or society and this is evident in the
youth demographic through its revolution in recent years. The markings of youth are social in
formulation; highlighting the way in which young people have been influenced by differing trends
and movements. Youth is a transitional phase, its age bracket extending and blurring; transcending
global divides and traditions. Thus, it is the social context that surrounds youth which suggests that
it is not a universal stage of life. Ultimately, the idea of youth when viewed in a historical and
cultural context as well as in relation to other socially influenced concepts such as adulthood, can be
observed as a social construction.
A Post–First World War occurrence, the concept of youth emerged as a historically comprised
debate in response to the social, political and cultural shifts at the time. Youth became a label used to
categorize a particular age group, with education and perceived life progress used to mark the
unfixed period between childhood and adulthood. It has been suggested that there has been
disruption in the general 'life patterns' for young people present around the time of, or born just after

A New Year Of Youth Group
To be honest, I had nervous expectations coming into a new year of youth group because I had just
gotten out of an unsuccessful summer romance with a fellow sponsor that I volunteer at TIC with
every week. However, my fears were unnecessary; the added expectations of this internship helped
me focus less on the awkwardness of the failed relationship and focus more on my youth ministry
efforts. When I was a freshman sponsor, there was a Dordt senior sponsor who interned under the
church and was paid by the church for her work. I always felt the shame of being under my
processor's shadow of high expectations because I feel like I'm not good enough to have New Life
want to pay me. This may sound bad, but I actually had low expectations for my practicum this
semester. I didn't expect it to be much different from the volunteering that I had already been doing
with New Life for the past two years. I expected the general blanket statements of the goals that all
youth workers expect: being able to grow in my relationships with students in order to help these
teens grow in their relationship with God. If I've learned anything from my experiences, though, I've
learned that you can never really expect anything in youth ministry. The biggest strength that I
brought into the practicum was two years of prior experience with this youth group, which gave me

employment is a complex issue.
As professional Youth Workers we must not only arm ourselves with up–to–date understanding of
what constitutes unemployment and how the digital landscape and the current and ongoing
engagement an overwhelming amount of young people have with the digital landscape/world. We,
as Youth Workers must also work with young people 's parents/caregivers. We must also explore

LGBT Youth Obstacles
There is a tremendous amount of LGBT youth that experience homelessness in the United States,
and forty percent of them identify themselves as LGBT. There are so many issues that cause
homelessness in the LGBT community such as discrimination in religious communities, lack of
support from families and rejection from society. But in a world where these issues are all around
us, how can we solve this? It starts with every individual to just stop and maybe educate themselves
on this unique youth community and the struggles they must face to bring in equality. This education
can start with volunteer work, educational classes, or even support groups. The problem is the
discrimination against the LGBT youth community, so many do not understand what it means to be
in the LGBT individual and the obstacles they must face such as finding a job, going to school and
finding a place to live, etc. Many LGBT have to face discrimination while trying to attend and can
be such a huge obstacle to try to receive an education when you have to go to a hostile work

Youth binge drinking
To what extent is youth violence, crimes and anti–social behaviour linked to youths binge drinking.
Binge drinking can be defined as an excessive consumption of alcohol within a short period of time
to get drunk. This essay will focus on how youth violence, crime and anti–social behaviour is linked

It is also known that regretful sexual activity is a leverage of youths heavy drinking. An article by
The Christian Institute (2011) expresses the concern of youths engaging in alcohol–fuelled sex. The
article states that "those binge drinking three or more times a week were over five times more likely
than non–binge drinkers to have had sex they regretted following alcohol". It was also suggested
that it is time for ministers should have a stricter attitude towards youths binge drinking. The article
goes on to declare that the government has failed to control the issue of youths misusing alcohol.
Having considered all of the points above, there are arguments about youth violence, crime and
anti–social behaviour not relating to binge drinking. It is common for youths to go through a
rebellious phase. During the stage of rebellion, crimes will be committed due to peer pressure or low
family income. A report by Taylor (2003) claims that street robberies were urged on by the fear of
youths being left out and bullied. This suggests that young people are very affected by how they are
perceived in the eyes of other individuals which instigate them to commit crime. A research by

According to the American Heart Association, one in every three children is overweight. Children
who are overweight are more likely to be obese as adults, increasing their risk for diseases and
conditions such as diabetes, heart attack, and high blood pressure (Ashe–Edmunds 3). High blood
pressure can lead to heart disease, stroke and kidney failure. But weight loss can help reduce high
blood pressure, so sports that burn calories address this problem.
Depending on the sport that a child participates in, most sports require physical activity. Research
has shown that "physical movement can affect the brain's physiology by increasing cerebral
capillary growth, blood flow, oxygenation, growth of nerve cells in the hippocampus,
neurotransmitter levels, development of nerve connections, density of neural network, and brain
tissue volume" (Donaldson 4). In other words, physical exercise causes short–term relaxation,
improved concentration, enhanced creativity and memory, improved mood, and enhanced problem–
solving abilities. Sport can help prevent drug and alcohol abuse by teaching young athletes to be
aware of their body and how it responds to different stimuli and circumstances. Athletes learn to
value what their bodies can do and to maintain those abilities (Jones 2). Being an athlete gives kids
an acceptable reason to say no to drugs, alcohol, and other unhealthy behaviors when offered by
their peers.

The Social Center For Lgbt Youth
The research question that facilitated our asset map was simply "What social outlets are available
for LGBT youth in the greater Los Angeles area?". We chose this question because the majority of
the young people receiving services at our site are homeless, and as everyone knows, homelessness
is a condition that can quickly lead to despair. We firmly believed that locating LGBT–themed
social gatherings, groups, and organizations would be an essential step in pointing these youths
towards systems of support that could help make their difficult circumstances more bearable.
Also, it was vital for us to focus only on social outlets that were LGBT–centric––for these young
people, being marginalized members of an already marginalized community, the homeless––have
distinct needs that other individuals don't. And when these needs aren't met, the consequences can be
tragic. Research shows that approximately 62 percent of homeless LGBT youth attempt suicide
(Center for American Progress, 2010). Before we began our work, officials at our site informed us
that they did not have a list of social outlets for the clients, which made our asset map that much
more important.
We drew the boundaries of the map around the greater Los Angeles area. This decision was made
because many of the clients, being homeless, do not have the means to go far distances. It would
have been useless to include social outlets in San Diego, for instance. As far as our criteria for
choosing assets, we included

Functionalists like Eisenstadt explain social institutions in terms of social problems and cultural
solutions. The youth "problem" lies in young peoples marginal status, youth culture eases the
resulting anxieties and uncertainties. His argument is that in meeting young peoples needs, youth
culture has the general function of smoothing the transition from child to adult. He believes that the
most important function for its members was emotional and providing young people with a set of
relationships, (peer groups.) The most important point for Eisenstadt is not that some young people
become deviants but that even the most deviant of youths become normal adults. He saw youth

Eisenstadts argument is a general argument. It refers to the transition that faces all young people in
industrial society but not all young people are the same. He didn't take into account that growing up
middle class is different to growing up working class and that growing up male is different to
growing up female. Also, he was explaining youth culture in a time of relative affluence and
optimism, growing up was not particularly problematic in the 1950's.
In the 1970's the strongly Marxist influenced CCCS related class to youth subcultures. They argued

people are homeless on any given night. For every one of these homeless people, three point five

Results like this don 't just speak for the character of a generation, they are testimony to the way that
adults represent the world to the younger generation. It shows the sort of example being set in the
culture at large.
It is very easy to point fingers at media, celebrities, divorced or single parents, working mothers, and
"liberal" attitudes toward things like sex, drugs and alcohol. Much too easy. But the things that
disenfranchise youth and lead them astray are rarely that simple. In fact, the tactic of laying blame at
convenient targets usually only makes the problem worse. Whether adults want to accept it or not,

that are popular are popular because teens are drawn to them, not because divorce rates are high or
women are in the workforce. Instead of laying blame, adults should try listening to youth. It is a
proven fact that when adults listen, when there is an open dialogue between parent and teen, issues
are better resolved and compromises more readily reached. If attitudes like those demonstrated in
the Josephson Institute survey are to be reversed an open and honest dialogue between adults and

I am a very active individual within my church however we do not currently have a youth services
program. This has become very popular and common in my area therefore I feel it is important to
implement a youth outreach program at my church. Drift Pentecostal Church is an adult–driven
church that has dissipated in youth over the last 10 years. Drift Pentecostal Church has not had a
youth program since the early 70 's. The program has dwindled to a mere once a week Sunday
School class that is separated by ages. With each year, the enrollment has diminished thereby
leaving our church with only 20 youth members ranging from ages 2–18 years of age. Of these
individuals, approximately 80 percent are under the age of 10. Although the pastor is very effective
at bringing in new members, it is still important to target the youth in our society today. The most
important reason, schools are no longer allowing God in their programs. With the constant fight for
separation of church and state, the youth are suffering. The importance of developing a youth
program is critical in order to drive our youth into the churches and into God 's hands. In an article
written by Mark Howard, he wrote, "the youth are restless, insecure, jaded, and desperately
searching for meaning to explain all the hurt and suffering they see around them, meaning for their
very existence," therefore what the youth need most is the gospel of Christ Jesus. He is the one who

In effect, children "see" themselves when they interact with other people, as if they are looking in a
mirror. Individuals use the perceptions that others have of them to develop judgments and feelings
about themselves.

Children pretend to be other people in their play and in so doing learn what these other people

Youth Villages Summary
Courtney Wilson from Youth Villages presented on numerous employment opportunities within the
organization and gave a general overview about how they help children and families. She described
that Youth Villages is a last resort for children and families because the children that they interact
with have typically been in the system, whether it be with DPS or troubles with the law. She
explained how the organization's first priority is the children they serve because they have
experienced such trauma and many people in and out of their. I enjoyed Ms. Wilson's positive
energy and informative presentation, however, I wish she knew more about the research or clinical

They created an in–home program for when families are experiencing difficulties and their child is
at risk, but before major issues have occurred. This is significant because they realized as an
organization that they can target the issues a step earlier to potentially prevent later issues.
Furthermore, they target prevention through providing programs for children aging out of foster
care. They examined the statistics that children who age out of foster care have a 50% incarceration
rate and a 50% chance of becoming a parent before the age of 21. They created a transitional living
program where residents have to graduate high school and either enter college or become employed.
This is a prevention program because they found that this group of people is at–risk when they are
finished with foster care and that this is an area they could help. They also provide parenting
assistance if the person that aged out of foster care is already a parent. This is important because the
individual may have never had a stable and loving parent, so they need training on how to be a
loving and supportive parent. This prevention method will hopefully help the cycle from repeating

The Importance Of Youth Ministry
The education of youth is important because all our thinking and action should begin with God.
Because young people are highly relational, Christian doctrine is critical for effective youth
ministry. To study Jesus is to learn about good relationships and how to relate. Relevant youth
ministry must copy His style and the way He ministered to others. An educational based youth
ministry to young people points to the person of Jesus Christ: his life, teachings and work for us.

It is estimated that between 240,000 and 400,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer
(LGBTQ+) youth experience at least one incident of homelessness each year in the United States

that these estimates have wide margins of error because tracking statistics for marginalized

There was one case that was very interesting to me and in a way pertains to the type of business I
am pursing to open upon my degree completion. Here is a brief summary of the case of Leahy vs.
The School Board of Hernando County in 1984. Leahy a football player, who was a freshman at the
time, did not receive proper football equipment due to the school did not have enough equipment for
all participants of the football program. Without the required equipment, helmet and mouth guard,
the player was still expected to partake in what was called "non–aggressive" quickness drills against
other players with the required equipment. There were other players that attempted the drill, but

My Philosophy for Youth Ministry
I believe that youth ministry is vital to the growth and effectiveness of the church–local and
universal. In order for the church to grow, the adult generations of the church needs to insure the
faith by training children and young adults "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord"(Ephesians
6:4). When the youth of the church are not taught the importance of a vibrant and active relationship
with God, then the church will see its ranks become thin and aged. With age comes wisdom and

Again there needs to be growth within the youth leaders as well as the teens. Parents are not exempt
from this need either. Growth can be encouraged in a number of ways, but one that is critical for the
believer is through the Word of God. 1 Peter 2:2 says that "As newborn babes[we ought to], desire
the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby." The Bible needs to be the main source of
where we draw our teaching and instruction for righteous living. We cannot rely completely on what
we feel about our walk with God or else we fall in danger of heresy or incorrect thinking about the
faith we possess. Doctrine from God's Word is what gives us the reason for why we do what we do
and why we believe in what we believe. Therefore we must show our teens that God's Word is a
perfect source for growth. Charles Spurgeon's comments fit perfectly the first two values I believe
should be focused on in youth ministry. He has been recorded having said that "Bread is a second
cause; the LORD Himself is the first source of our sustenance. He can work without the second
cause as well as with it; and we must not tie Him down to one mode of operation."
Galatians 5:13c says "by love serve one another." The last area that would be profitably applied as a
principle for youth ministry is the area of service.

Purpose Of A Space For Youth
Missions has always been, and continues to be, a cornerstone of my passion to serve. As I continue
to look for the most impactful ways to support the causes that are most important to my ministry, I
will take into account how to unify by second passion dear to my heart, children and youth with my
desire to serve through mission. Missions is a service concerned with providing saving decrees to
God's living children in our communities and throughout the world. It is a service that goes beyond
the four walls of the church. I envision, from this stewardship effort, I can create a space for youth
to transform their community, city, state and the world through mission. A world where young
people are able to engage, embrace, and promote a prospering life that supports those they encounter
through their service of mission.
Today's youth are tomorrow's stewards and leaders. Thus, the purpose of this initiative is to build
stewardship by connecting youth to mission through joyful practical application, knowledge from
the experience they gain, and the actions they take to cultivate a healthy and thriving outlook to
serve humanity. Essentially, so they may continue to support mission work in perpetuity.
Purpose and Vision
Mission today, is as it was with Timothy in the days of Paul. It was Paul who wrote to his young
confidante, saying in 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV) 12 "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are
young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in
