Homeostasis
              Notes Module #1 pages 5 – 10
  http://health.howstuffworks.com/adam-200092.htm
    Definition – steady-state
equilibrium existing in the body and
the maintenance of this state
                    or
a state of equilibrium in the body with
respect to its functions, chemical
levels, and tissues
Homeostasis continued:

Homeostasis is associated with the
relative constancy of the chemical and
physical environment in the cells and
in the organism itself.

The body is said to be in homeostasis
when the needs of the cells are met
and its activities are occurring
normally.
Homeostasis continued:

Everything in the body is to remain
within a certain range or within
certain parameters or a set point .

Ex. Parameters = blood sugar, blood
pressure, body temperature
Homeostasis continued:

Set point = normal value of a variable
factor in the body

Ex. Set points
    body temperature = 98.2 F
    blood sugar = 100 mg/dL
    blood pressure = 120/80 mm/Hg
When things get away from the set
point, things start to go terribly wrong
and the organism can not maintain life
unless levels are brought back to that
                set point/
       into an acceptable range.
Both chemical and physical
environments need to remain
in a homeostatic state.
Chemical environments would
include things such as
water, nutrients, and oxygen.

ex. oxygen levels fall too far
below set point – someone stops
breathing result in organ damage
and death
Physical environments would include
things like body temperature and
atmospheric pressure.

    ex. body temperature becomes
outside normal range /set point and if
not brought back to that set point it
can result in brain damage and even
death.
So how does the body
maintain homeostasis??
