Holistic Approaches Of Weight Management With Type 2 Diabetes
Holistic Approaches to Weight Management with Type 2 Diabetes
Cynthia Lewis
American College of Health Care Sciences
Abstract
Weight management is key to avoiding the onsite of chronic disease and illness. Currently in the United States and globally, obesity and Type 2
diabetes are on the rise and are near epidemic proportions. Nearly 1/3 of Americans are overweight and 1 in 3 have been diagnosed with Type 2
diabetes (CDC, 2015). Therefore, it is essential that all health practitioners understand the options available when helping clients and patients learn
how to not only adjust to a diagnosis of diabetes, but also to understand how to lose weight and keep it off. Several holistic approaches are described
in this paper that can help compliment the conventional medical plan for weight management and Type 2 diabetes. Nearly 80% of Americans use herbal
medicine and 38 % use some form of Complimentary Alternative Medicine (CAM) in addition to their medical care (U.S. Department of Health &
Human Services, 2015). Holistic care addresses not only the weight management issues, but also restores balance to all aspects of the person.
Holistic Approaches to Weight Management with Type 2 Diabetes Currently in the United States, Type 2 diabetes is becoming a major, chronic
illness that is affecting 1 in 3 Americans (CDC, 2015). One of the primary actions an overweight person must do is lose weight and reduce their BMI.
This seems like a simple matter of calories in

Course Summary, And Myself Reflection
Course Summary, and Myself reflection While attending lectures of Life Style Modifications For Community Leaders, it adds new information, and
changing my bad habit to the better one. Actually, from the first class I realized that our body is not constant not just anatomy and physiology. But it is
a most complicated system it react with universe, energy, vibrations, and power, which located everywhere in and around us. Throughout classes and
my colleagues presentations, I got a historical story for each alternative medicine style how it started, its benefits, and how can use it effectively.
Hence, classes flow began with the overview of the human power and how it affects by energy fields and vibration. For the first time, I have heard
about chakras his designed points in our body that it needs proper clearance through several mediation styles. When a person uses meditation to remove
bad checkers, the human body will positively react physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Even food is our naturalmedicine, so we have to
monitor our food ingredients carefully; for example, garlic is our natural antibiotics, turmeric powder is an antitoxin and protect our body from cancer,
onion and cabbage is the best insulin stimulants. Not only monitor food ingredients, but also the ways of cooking it; namely, microwave converts the
molecules inside food until it loses its benefits. Introducing meditation by our class guests Mr. Duggan Selkirk, who taught us how practice

The Use Of Complementary And Alternative Therapies
In the early 1900's antibiotic medications appeared thus decreasing the use of complementary and alternative therapies, however their popularity was
regained in the 1970's (Kramlich, 2014). The use of complementary and alternative therapies is an increasing trend that individuals seek out if they
need relief from other medical approaches, if they feel they are missing something from Canada's health care system, to increase over health and to
prevent further illness. These therapies are a trend that has increased in the last two decades in Canada (Miller, 2001). A cross–sectional study was
conducted by a Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) nationally, directing 400,055 Canadian's ages thirteen and older in 2001 to 2007 to
participate. The CCHS established that around 12% of Canadians used some form of complementary or alternative therapy aid in the past 12 months
(Metcalfe et al, 2001). Debra Kramlich wrote an article titled "Introduction to Complementary, Alternative and Traditional Therapies" (2001) and
compared statistics across numerous studies that were performed on complementary and alternative therapies. One study showed the rates of disclosure
by individuals using complementary and alternative therapies. Two–thirds reported that they did not disclose their use of these therapies to their
physicians. A cross–sectional survey discussed the increasing lack of disclosure rates in pregnant women that went from 1% in 2006 to 50% in 2013.
A systematic review was briefly

Compare And Contrast Alternative And Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine refers to the practices that are different from the conventional approach in the field of medicine. Usually, the methods used in
alternative medicine got its founding principles on the philosophies that are opposite of those in modern–day medicine. In addition, it also integrates
the use of spiritual practices, new approaches, or pre–modern medical traditions in the healing process.
Alternative health care is a holistic way of caring for our body, mind and spirit. It is called alternative because it offers a way of caring for our health
that is not conventional or what we are used to in the Western world. In the Western world caring for our health is done mostly by the administration of
medicines, many of which are synthetic, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But with the advent of these drugs we gradually forgot alternative health care in favor of conventional medicine. One reason was that conventional
medicine was fast and predictable. You do not have to search for the herb and boil it and make a concoction out of it. You just go to the drugstore,
present the prescription your doctor gave you, receive the medicine from the pharmacist or his/her aide and pay for it. Upon reaching home, you just
take the medicine. It is so convenient.
But the recent experience of people taking conventional drugs is that they may lead to dependence on these drugs and larger doses may be required
upon subsequent intakes. Furthermore there are bad effects in taking these drugs. These happen especially with antibiotic drugs. So people began to
look for alternative ways of healing, one that is not heavily dependent on synthetic drugs and one that heals body, soul and spirit so that the person
really become whole.
Some of the methods of alternative health care may be enumerated

A Paradigm Shift to Complementary and Alternative Medicine
A Paradigm Shift to Complementary and Alternative Medicine Over the last century, religion, spirituality, and science have all played a major role in
health care, although they have never been integrated with traditional medical science in the United States. Complementary and Alternative Medicine
(CAM) is a set of medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not part or integrated as part of Westernmedicine which is the
dominant health care system in the United States. Religion and spirituality have both played dominant roles in healing since the beginning of history.
Today it is believed that prayer and faith can bring healing and is referred to as holistic healing, or focus on the mind, body, and spirit rather... Show

Instead of focusing on treating an illness, an approach toward total body health and prevention of disease is a much more eclectic system of health
care. CAM can offer the alternative methods to healing which in combination with traditional methods can offer better healing and healing capacities.
The shifting paradigm of traditional medicine and CAM will continue to prevail over the next few years due to the increasingly culturally diverse
United States and the growing interest of alternative medicine practices and religious and spiritual approaches to healing. An integration of traditional
methods and alternative medicine can provide better treatment for patients due to the direct relationship between stress and neuroendocrine responses
in the human body. The psycho–physiological aspect of stress as it relates to disease has become more and more popular for study in recent times. This
understanding has shifted the focus of healing to a more integrated one of understanding emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioral factors and
how they directly affect health. As this understanding continues to shift, CAM and holistic medicine will become more and more popular and a
definite shift will occur in our culture where CAM and Western Medicine are combined for a better health care

The Pros And Cons Of Herbal Medicine
Complementarity itself is the idea of "combining in such a way as to enhance or emphasize the qualities of each other or another" (English Oxford
Dictionaries, 2017). Within the world of health practitioners, we often hear the phrase "complementary therapy", sometimes used interchangeably with
"alternative therapy".
In its own definition, the NHS borrows from the US Government's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH):
When a non–mainstream practice is used together with conventional medicine, it's considered "complementary".
When a non–mainstream practice is used instead of conventional medicine, it's considered "alternative"." (US, NCCIH, 2017)
On the same NHS website page (UK, NHS UK, 2017), herbal medicine is described as being a common complement to its conventional counterpart.
Remove conventional medicine from the equation and herbal medicine is deemed to be alternative. There is also a third category of integrative
medicine "where complementary therapies are used within a conventional medical setting as part of a prescribed treatment" (Nursing Times, 2008). It
is important to understand that these definitions are placed within a cultural, social and indeed historical context which makes them subjective. Whilst
orthodox Western medicine is the dominant mainstream in the UK, we should be aware that this is not the case in other countries and cultures. "India
...has seven national medical systems – of which modern medicine is but one.

The Doctor Of The Future
As Thomas Edison once said, "the doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in
the cause and prevention of disease" ("Alternative Medicine Quotes"). This quote is gradually becoming a popular philosophy among American
citizens and holistic physicians who prefer alternative medicines to traditional medicines. In short, this quote explains how the clinicians of the future
will practice preventive medicine. Physicians will instruct their patients on how to live an enhanced lifestyle, and also how to nurture their bodies
physically so that they can avoid illness and disease in the first place. The alternative medicine philosophy is solely based upon the reality that ... Show

Furthermore, many Americans distrust American drug companies, which seem as if they just aim to overmedicate American citizens in order to gain
dollars. Society would prefer more natural and harmless remedies. A recent report concluded that 25 million Americans made an estimated 425 million
visits to alternative care providers annually, which is more than the visits that were made to primary care physicians ("Alternative Medicine"). This
statistic alone showcases American citizen's desire for alternative medicine care and treatment.
Americans are without question, the most heavily medicated people on the Earth. When most Americans ponder about drug use in America, they
immediately think of illegal drugs such as marijuana or cocaine. However, pharmaceutical drugs are far more widely used than illicit drugs are, and
the use of such medications has skyrocketed over the past few decades (Thompson 12). According to a 2006 study by Boston University, eighty two
percent of American adults and more than half of children take at least one medication (prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or herbal
supplements) every day (Thompson 7). However, the forces that shape these statistics are highly controversial. The driving force is the pharmaceutical
industry. With $291 billion in annual sales, the pharmaceutical industry is the fastest growing and most profitable sector of the American economy and
spending on prescription drugs is the fastest

Alternative Health Care Essays
Alternative Health Care
Alternative health cares, also known as holistic or homeopathic care, are countless ways of unconventional health care approaches to healing and
improving illnesses. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann discovered homeopathy in the early 1800's. He was sick of the art of medicine practiced in his time; he
said it was barbaric. He knew there had to be alternatives so, like any devoted science lover would do, he experimented on himself and his friends.
Hahnemann found that large dosages of herbs increased symptoms so he decreased the dosage and found that the symptoms decreased and usually
ceased (Smith 10). Homeopathy became popular in the nineteenth century. This may be accounted for because most patients at that time... Show more

When someone chooses alternative care he must take into consideration its dangers. One could actually overdose on vitamins or misuse herbal
therapies. "Instead of feeling better, I felt increasingly worse, like a spaced out zombie" complained Carol Copeland, a former holistic patient who
almost lost her life to cancer because her homeopathic physicians were too proud to think they were wrong thus they neglected an ovarian cyst
(Copeland 104 & Wekesser 95). Another problem with these unconventional health care alternatives is that they give false relief. What this means is
that when someone uses a holistic remedy and then feels relief he tends to credit the remedy. This method does not hold water because most ailments
resolve themselves (headache for example). Nevertheless, holistic medicine has strengths. One, it recognizes the psychological, environmental and
social aspects of illness. Two, it involves the patient in his own treatment with activities etc... And three, it emphasizes preventive medicine as its base
(holistic). Holistic medicine is a practice of health cares that that emphasizes treatment of the entire patient's body, mind and spirit. Homeopathic care,
compared to allopathic is expensive. There are no doctor's visits or expensive antibiotic prescriptions necessary. This is not to say that doctors are not
useful; obviously, if there were a serious injury one should not hesitate to go to a medical (allopathic) doctor (Smith

Alternative Approaches And Future Directions
ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS Although many RBPs recognize RNA in a sequence specific manner, sequence
information alone is not sufficient to reliably predict ICP27 binding sites. In the infected cell, other RBPs will cooperate and compete when binding to
viral transcipts; therefore it is critical to study ICP27–RNA interactions within the cellular environment. The iCLIP–seq experiments will provide an in
vivo, transcriptome–wide map of ICP27–RNA binding sites during lytic HSV–1 infection. Importantly, the high resolution of iCLIP–seq should allow
us to identify a consensus recognition element from which oligonucleotides will be generated for use in Specific Aim 2. In the case that the standard

Specific Aim 2: Explore the role of RNA interaction interface residues in ICP27 function during viral infection. This specific aim will be performed
in collaboration with Dr. Alexander Golovanav and will investigate the phenotype of ICP27 recombinants with mutated RNA interface residues
within the RGG motif. BACKGROUND Previous studies performed by Dr. Golovanov and his research team have elucidated how the ICP27
homolog, herpes virus saimiri (HVS) ORF57, specifically recognizes viral transcripts in the nucleus and introduces them to TREX complex member
Aly/REF in order to promote the export of HVS mRNA. Using NMR spectroscopy, Dr. Golovanov identified the sites of direct contact between
ORF57–specific RNA oligomers (14merS) and ORF57 in the absence and presence of Aly/REF. These studies demonstrated that when Aly/REF is
present, part of the ORF57–RNA binding site, composed of an О±–helix (R–b helix), binds preferentially to Aly/REF. This competitively displaces
viral mRNA from the R–b helix to Aly/REF, but contact with ORF57 is maintained through an adjacent flanking region. At the same time, the flexible
N–terminal region of Aly/REF also comes into contact with the bound viral mRNA and ultimately leads to the cooperative formation of a ternary
ORF57–RNA–REF complex (Fig. 7). Despite the lack of sequence

Adhd : Alternative Approaches For Disruptive Behavior Essay
ADHD: Alternative Approaches to Disruptive Behavior Conrad Landis Middle Tennessee State University This review intends to shed light on the
potential overdiagnosis, over medicalization, and various behavior modification approaches to ADHD. Emphasis is placed on the impact of assessment
by physicians as well as mindfulness to the idea of doing no harm. Evidence shows that behavior therapy is recommended as the first line of defense
thus supporting the theory that disruptive behavior can be effectively treated when utilizing appropriate parent/child development strategies. ADHD:
Alternative Approaches to Disruptive Behavior Controversy continues to surround a disorder which tends to classify vast numbers of unruly children
as abnormal. It is officially recognized as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) in the fifth publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The National Institute of Health (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, n.d.) states, "For a person to receive a
diagnosis of ADHD, the symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity–impulsivity must be chronic or long–lasting, impair the person's functioning,
and cause the person to fall behind normal development for his or her age." Although this statement attempts to define criteria necessary for a possible
diagnosis, much is left to be questioned about the nature of assessment, prescription, and potential behavior modification strategies.

Congestion Of Congestion Based Fees
Congestion, particularly in urban centers, has received much attention due to the resulting higher absolute travel times and lower travel time reliability,
that lead to higher fuel consumption and significant environmental impacts. In response to the high congestion delays and costs, researchers and
policymakers have studied the need and the implications of implementing congestion–based fees in a bid to alleviate congested network links and/or
areas, and divert traffic as needed, temporally, spatially and modally, known as "triple divergence" (Downs, 1992). Proper evaluation of any congestion
management strategy requires explicitly setting performance measures that can be used as indicators of how well the policy performs, and whether or
not the initial goals are reached.
Congestion pricing is a widely used policy aiming to mitigate congestion along heavily congested facilities. The rationale behind congestion pricing is
that users are charged a toll fee in order to use the facility, in a bid to alleviate congestion and improve travel time along this facility, and/or collect
revenue to be allocated in congestion–mitigation projects that would enhance the users' experience and the system performance overall. There are
different implementation schemes, depending on the level of sophistication that the agency wishes to achieve: unique vs. differentiated toll by vehicle
type/class, fixed vs. dynamic toll rates based on the traffic conditions, tolled lanes in conjunction with

NCCAM's mission is to explore CAM practices using rigorous scientific methods and build an evidence base for the safety and effectiveness of these
practices. (NIH, 2008)
Define the terms alternative, complementary, and integrative in relation to medicine and clarify how these terms are different.
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a term used to describe medical products and practices that are not part of conventional medicine
used and practiced by western or allopathic medicine. Our conventional medicine is practiced by medical doctors, doctor of osteopathic medicine and
allied health professionals, such as psychologists, and registered nurses. Complementary medicine means no more than "in addition to" your standard
care. To elaborate by standard I mean standard to the type of illness for example hypnosis is a standard part of psychiatry, but not one of a cancer
treatment. A good example of complementary medicine include, herbal remedies, and naturopathic medicine. Alternative medicine is medicine that
claims to heal and is based on historical or cultural traditions, rather than on scientific evidence. Integrative medicine is a combination of practices and
methods of alternative medicine along with conventional medicine.

The base argument is again the same where companies realise their own responsibilities towards the employee and compensate him for negligence and
lack of safety systems. The entire discussion of him being a permanent employee for one company and temporary for other is only a way of escaping
the possibility of making a payment. This does not reflect strongly on part of the employer. Alternative 4– The parent company Mabey Bridge, despite
not being sued, could pay Gene Elliot, in part, full or on some other criteria, as he was its permanent employee. This possibility will come into the
picture if all other companies somehow are able to stay clear of any payment. The parent company should definitely do something about its valued
employee who was sent to a project by the company on basis of his competencies. Thought the company may not seem directly responsible but they
were responsible in selecting and approving the contractor and his choice of company for execution of the work. The employee would trust the
choice of his company and hence the company is always responsible for its employee. Step 5: Is there a priority emerging or a hierarchy of ethical
requirements that call for specific action? Do any of the alternative capture that?. As this is the case of accident during active employment. We found

Frankfurt : The Principle Of Alternative Possibilities (...
Zhiyuan Li Philosophy 3000 Frankfurt Without Counter–Examples: An Alternative Possibility Harry Frankfurt (1969) argues that the principle of
alternative possibilities (PAP): (PAP) a person is morally responsible for what he has done only if he could have done otherwise (829) is false, because
there are cases where a person is morally responsible for what she has done even if she could not have done otherwise (835–6). Call such cases
Frankfurt–style cases. A lot of literature thereafter has been targeted on these Frankfurt–style cases, particularly whether it's really possible to construct
them. Among critics of Frankfurt, David Widerker (2003) takes one step further and he grants, for the sake of his argument, that it is possible to
construct Frankfurt–style cases ; however, he argues that even so, Frankfurt's argument still fails because there are counter–examples to Frankfurt–style
cases, which are in favor of PAP (60–2). This paper is a defense of Frankfurt. Having said that, however, I think Widerker has developed a very strong
criticism of Frankfurt which in some sense takes away his prima facie intuition. Therefore, it seems to me not enough for defenders of Frankfurt to
respond by just refuting the counter–examples Widerker provides against Frankfurt–style cases – they must somehow bring their intuition back. This is
exactly what I want to pursue in this paper. I will argue that Frankfurt's argument may be reconstructed in an alternative way, which does not depend

24 September 2015 title Paulo Freire was a Brazilian educator and philosopher whose distinctive visions have influenced the perception of people
towards traditional education. In his essay "The 'Banking' Concept of Education", Paulo criticizes the current educational approaches and teaching
methods, comparing the depositing of information into the students to the act of depositing money into a bank account, and offers another positive
way of teaching as an alternative to such approaches. Although Freire could convince his audience of his opinions using his own way, his hypocritical

So he just mentions the bad things about the banking concept and the good things about the problem posing education. For instance, he wants, in his
new approach, the students to take action against the oppressive elements of reality (paragraph 11), which means that students will be able to change
the society when they see problems and will become revolutionaries, but he refuses to mention the dramatic problems that these revolutionary ideas
could produce. Freire also didn't take into consideration in his essay the students' mentality. It's not always about the teachers, but the students have also
a big role in receiving knowledge. A motivated student might actually be able to learn by the banking method, whereas an unmotivated student might
get worse with learning by the problem–posing method. So it is true that one method could be better than the other, but there is always the students'
mindset that plays a major role in education and learning. If Freire had shown both sides of his ideas along with making his essay more discussable by
asking questions, he would have been able to show less hypocrisy and strengthen his approach, but at the same time, this would have affected the
validity of his thoughts and weakened them. And this could be the first trouble that a problem posing

Traditional and Alternative Teaching
Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND It is well known that children learn in various ways and have their own individual styles and strategies.
Some may enjoy group works, others individual works. Some may prefer teacher instructions with worksheets and firm direction, rather than
self–generated research projects. There are numerous ways children learn, but how does the surrounding environment, affects a child's learning ability
and influence the learning strategies that employ? Our society these days are divided into two different ways of thinking on the education. Some may
believe that alternative methods are better than the traditional methods of teaching but yet these two methods are both a successful ways. ... Show more

With the view of functionalist, Skinner (1953) developed his theory of learning on the concept of operantconditioning . He offer the organism operates
in the environment doing whatever it does. According to Skinner , while operating, the organisms encounters stimuli to which he referred as
reinforcing stimuli.
Cognitive Leaning Theory A founding father of Cognitive Learning Theory, GagnE (1985) contended that it is more realistic to assume that there are
different kinds of learning, arranged in a hierarchy, with one sortbeing the prerequisite for the next. For example, solving an algebraic problem depends
on understanding algebraic function, which depends on knowing basic mathematical skills and computations, which depends on recognizing simple
numbers and symbols. For GagnE, simple conditioning only provided the basis for more advance kind of learning. He built on the behaviorist model
by adding processing or cognitive component to Skinners' model.
Conceptual Framework For a better understanding of the study, the conceptual framework is presented in the paradigm below which consist of
independent and dependent variables.
Figure 1: Paradigm of the Study The research paradigm of the study in figure 1 has the dependent variables which consist of the subjects, materials and
classrooms. While the independent variables consist of the alternative teaching method and traditional

Healing Acupuncture: An Alternative Health Care
Out of the numerous alternative health care approaches, acupuncture is a highly effective treatment and has been an ongoing cure for over 20000
years. The insertion of fine needles enhances the breakdown of energy blockages that are essential for good health. This practice corrects any
imbalance of flow close to the skin's surface. To achieve the best results an individual's age and size will determine how deep each needle is required
to go to in order for the soothing to commence.
As a natural process of healing acupuncture provides a drug free pain relief, and treats conditions from as big as a physiological condition such as
depression to as little as a skin condition such as eczema.

The Pros And Cons Of Alternative Medicine
Alternative Medicine, how modern is it, how effective can it really be, and lastly, does it actually work? Alternative medicine is a non–traditional form
of medicine composed of a broad range of healing techniques and treatments, usually consisting of non–drug medicine based interventions. Treatments
can range anywhere from therapeutic approaches, philosophic ideas, dieting, meditation methods, acupuncture, homeopathy, and aromatherapy,
amongst others. The idea of this new paradigm of health care, alternative medicine, also known as integrative medicine, is the reparation of the body as
a whole, not solely focusing on the treatment and healing process of a specific medical problem, rather, concentrating on an overall well–being and
optimal mental health.
Although, alternative medicine has been around for centuries there is limited research evidence of it, leading to lack of confidence and effectiveness
on its methods in the medicine world. Even then, in the last couple of decades the subject of alternative medicine has gotten massive amounts of
attention causing it to be an endless worldwide discussion. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) released a
survey in late 2007 stating that at least 40 percent of adults in the US and 12 percent of children had used complementary or alternative therapies at
least once in their lifetime. Meaning at least half of Americans have used a form of Acupuncture, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Naturopathy and or

Chiropractic involves a special position in the United States medicinal services system. It is the most generally dispersed indigenous American system

Animal 's Ability Foraging Theory
Introduction
Within certain environments such as casinos or betting houses, it is not uncommon to see individuals choose sub–optimally, meaning individuals will
often choose options that offer a high reinforcement outcome but with a lower probability of it occurring than a safer choice that would offer less
reinforcement but more reliably. In animals, it would be expected not to see this behaviour, for instance, optimal foraging theory (Pyke, 1984) argues
that an animal 's ability forage ultimately effects there overall evolutionary fitness in terms of ability to survive and the ability for the genes to be
passed on. Therefore, choosing risky behaviour would ultimately be a deficit to their survival. However rather Paradoxically, animals do indulge in
very similar gambling behaviours to that seen in humans (Stagner & Zentall, 2010).
Gipson, Alessandri, Miller, and Zentall (2009)was able to show this phenomenon to which they provided pigeons with two alternative keys a 50%
discriminative chain, meaning it had two light that represented reinforcement or no reinforcement. A secondly akey that provided food 75%
reinforcement on a non–discriminatory chain, meaning that it had a single contingency. what they found was that pigeons would choose the 50%
alternative as opposed to the 75% chain despite it providing far more food Stagner and Zentall (2010) at a better rate. Implying that gambling

Video Headset With Directional Sound Technology Essay
A. Executive Summary: Lars Inman, CEO of RLK Media, needs to make a decision on how to develop the iVid. This video headset with directional
sound technology has the potential to revolutionize the consumer electronics industry. Although recently RLK Media has been struggling against the
competition and has seen their margins evaporate. With the company's declining performance the board of directors has threatened to find a
replacement CEO, making Lars' decision all the more critical. He is being pressured by his R&D department to invest $6 million to hire software
engineers and produce iVid internally. However, the optimal option is for RLK Media to outsource the R&D of iVid to Inova. Not only will it strength
the company's margins, it guarantees that they obtain a competitive advantage of being first to the market.
B. Industry Dynamics: RLK Media is known for producing high–quality, American made products in theconsumer electronics industry. This industry
highly competitive due to the need of constant innovation. Consumers value new, cutting edge products which inevitably promote sales in the
industry. However, innovation is also associated with increased competition, leading to decreased prices, decreased product life cycles, and increased
risk from extensive R&D. Not only do companies need to continually investing to create the next "big hit", they also are battling to be first to the
market as many work on similar technologies. In order to reduce these high costs,

Pros And Cons Of Cam Therapies
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) goes back to alternative medicine that
was used years ago. CAM is a term used to describe a wide range of healing systems that are not
typically considered part of mainstream or conventional Western medicine. CAM is consisted in
many therapies that will each help a different part of the body, but in a slower process. The
questions that are often asked by those who do not know about CAM are: What is
Complementary and Alternative Medicine? What are the different types of CAM therapies and
what are they use for? and Will health insurance cover CAM therapies?
Because not everyone has been familiar to these type of therapies, they have been debating
on whether using them. Alternative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe that the government should have a limited
amount to spend on Complementary and Alternative medicine for those who think that
conventional medicine can harm their body. They instead spend billions of dollars on ineffectual

increased, according to the 2007 NHIS, "People often pay for complementary health services and
products themselves–that is, "outВofВpocket...Found that about oneВthird of uninsured
respondents younger than age 65 used complementary health approaches." If the government
will not be able to add CAM in the health insurance, then the practitioners should make these

Community Service Activities Through The Alternative...
Earlier this year, I saw the same homeless man sitting on the curb with all his belongings in a cart and his dog at his side. I saw him day in and
day at the same curb with the same clothes and the same despaired look on his face for several months. I would often think to myself that I should
probably give him some money or even the left over sandwich that I had from lunch that day, but I never actually did. Until one day, it dawned on me
that it had been awhile since I've seen him. At first I found myself pondering the thought of what happened to him and if he was okay then I started to
wonder what if I could have made a difference if I had done something different. I acknowledged that characteristic about myself early into the
semester, so I decided to make a change. In order to transform that aspect of myself, I decided to do something. I took the liberty to sign up for several
different community service activities through the Alternative Breaks Program at Florida International University that benefited the campus and the
homeless. I wanted to take action and help the less fortunate. I want to help those individuals who don't have a warm bed to sleep on or clean clothes
on their back. I want to be a lending hand for those in need. I feel sympathy for those individuals who have to suffer through a life with the bare

CAM Therapeutic Modalities Paper
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is important in todays' health care for researchers, practitioners, and consumers. Society should be
aware of the safety of taking herbs, therapies, and any health topics. The CAM website can be a useful website to research information that a person
wants to gain background on. In the following paper, I will give definitions of alternative, complementary, integrativemedicine, conventional medicine
role, CAMs philosophy, five domains of therapies, and research a treatment.
Definition of Alternative, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine Alternative is a non–mainstream approach in place of conventional medicine. A
system of healing or treating disease, such as homeopathy, Ayurveda, faith healing, and chiropractic that is not included in the traditional curricula in
medical schools. Complementary medicine is a non–mainstream approach together with conventional medicine. Practices of alternative medicine
acquired and adapted by mainstream medical practitioners, such as acupuncture. Integrative medicine is holistic and encloses the mind, body, and
spirit. It encircles both conventional and alternative medicine to use the best evidence of both approaches to healing. Integrative medicine integrates
the therapies of alternative medicine with mainstream medical practitioners. The terms differ because integrative medicine is finding new solutions for
prevention and treatment of health care problems,

Holistic Medicine: Acupuncture
Holistic medicine is gradually becoming more popular among individuals with acute and chronic medical conditions. Holistic practices interventions
can be divided into several domains including mental and physical therapies such as prayer, meditation, massages, yoga, tai chi, and music therapy. The
American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) defines holistic nursing as a "specialty nursing practice that heals the whole person by drawing on
nursing knowledge, theories, expertise, and intuition to guide nurses in becoming therapeutic partners with people in their care"(Edelman, Kudzma, &

Alternative Medicine
Some people often apply complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) if they do not feel the needed result after the traditional modern treatment.
Contrarily, another group of humans does not completely believe in standard medical care using only this type of medicine. Thus, manual therapy is
rather an effective type of non–traditional medicine requiring special education and professional skills from each CAM practitioner.
According to Mayo Clinic (2014), "Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is the popular term for health and wellness therapies that have
typically not been part of conventional Western medicine." Manipulative therapy or manual therapy belongs to CAM and it is a physical treatment
mainly used by massage therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, osteopathic physicians, osteopaths, and chiropractors
to treat musculoskeletal disability and pain. Moreover, manual therapy usually includes muscle manipulation and kneading, joint manipulation and joint
mobilization.
Manual therapy includes various techniques for patients' treatment; however, before each procedure the manual practitioner has to perpetrate a full
assessment of the nerve and blood supply in addition to muscle and bone assessment for determination of possible complications after these techniques.
Only after the full exam can the practitioner use one or more types of manual physical therapy, which happen to include soft

pain conditions as a collaborative and integral part of the health care system. Supporting background research Chronic pain is a serious problem with
more than 40 million adults suffering from severe pain as reported by the National Institute for Health (NIH) (2010). According to the NIH (2010),
chronic pain sufferers use more health care, have worse overall health, and have more disability. The NIH estimates the economic cost of chronic pain
at $635 billion annually within the United States from both healthcare costs and lost worker productivity (NIH, 2010). The American Academy of Pain
Management (AAPM) stated that yearly, millions of people suffer from acute or chronic pain, which exacts a tremendous cost in health care costs,
rehabilitation, and lost worker productivity along with an emotional and financial burden on people and their families (n.d.). According to the AAPM,
the costs of unrelieved pain are more than just the physical pain as unrelieved pain can result in longer hospital stays, increased rate of
re–hospitalization, increased outpatient visits, and decreased ability to function fully leading to lost income and insurance coverage due to inability to
work (n.d). The AAPM (n.d) reports the most commonly reported chronic pain conditions as low back pain (27%), headache or migraine pain (15%),

Ethropharmacology Vs Ethnopsychiatry
13. Two domains, out of the multitude of possibilities, of Ethnomedical systems that anthropologists would be interested in investigating are
ethnopharmacology and ethnopsychiatry. The domain of ethnopharmacology is at a basic level, the study of the uses of what some may consider
'drugs' or medicines to treat an illness within a cultural context. Ethnopharmacology can be both curative and palliative forms of treatment.
Ethnopharmacology can be something within biomedicine such as taking an antibiotic to cure a bacterial infection. It can also be something considered
an 'alternative' form of healthcare such as ingesting and herbal remedy, like Chamomile tea, to ease an upset stomach. Another domain, ethnopsychiatry
focuses on the perceptions of mental health from a cultural perspective. This domain could be intriguing to anthropologists because unlike biomedicine,
many cultures do not separate mental and physical health and health practices into different categories; but instead believe they are interconnected.
14. Two types of complimentary and alternativemedicine are meditation and chakra alignment. Meditation observes the idea that the mind and body,
mental and physical health is interconnected. Some even believe that if your body and mind are in a more relaxed state ... Show more content on

more likely to participate in negative activities such as becoming the bully themselves or being more involved in drug related substances. The main idea
is that once an individual has gone through bullying and to know what it is like can affect others to want to make the wrong choices. It relates to
Cross and Barnes, because they both discuss behavior when it comes to bullying. The authors include researched data within the article that will
provide resourceful information to go in the essay. This example from being bullied can make it easier to want to be a part of negative actions. It will
be very useful for this essay and will provide a lot of evidence to these situations that are happening.

"Patients who chose alternative therapies to treat a common, curable cancer instead of opting for the recommended medical treatment double their

people would like to try an alternate form of treatment for their cancer. Some western treatment methods of cancer are things like chemotherapy and

has only started to emerge since the 1800s. Complementary and alternative modalities have been around for thousands of years, and for some can be
found on cave drawings. As allopathic medicine has different modalities, so does complementary and alternative medicine such as: acupuncture,
traditional Chinese medicine, aromatherapy and massage to name a few. Not all of CAM modalities are accepted in allopathic medicine, therefore are
not integrated into the services. However, as more evidence–based research is conducted more of the CAM modalities are being shown to be helpful

Complementary medicine is one that is "non–mainstream", but can be "used together with conventional medicine" (National Center for
Complementary and Integrative Health, 2016). On the other hand, alternative medicine, also non–mainstream, is used instead "of conventional
medicine" (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2016). There are many different approaches to using conventional and
complementary and alternative medicine together, creating an integrative effect.
Per the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (2016) "most complementary health approaches fall into one of two
subgroups–natural products or mind and body practices". Natural products such as herbs, minerals, and dietary aids can pose a risk to persons using
them with conventional medicine. Natural products that are taken as dietary supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and
must be deemed safe by the firm that is marketing it (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2016). Complementary and alternative medicine can

CAM Modalities is an Alternative Therapy
CAM Modalities
Conventional treating of patients is not always the best treatment; there are routes a provider can explore to assist in the overall health and wellbeing
of the patient. Complementary and alternative therapy (CAM) is the other route for the patient. Each of these modalities can produce a healing effect
or relief from an ailment that will have an effect in a positive manner on the quality of life. Too many times patients become settled or complacent in
his or her disease process and never look into the other routes.
Basics
Non–main stream therapy is in three categories and five domains by definition. The categories are complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine
and the domains are biologically based therapies, manipulative and body–based methods, mind–body interventions, energy therapies, and alternative
medical systems. Complementary refers to a non–mainstream approach with conventional medicine in conjunction, while alternative refers to a
non–mainstream approach in place of conventional medicine. (NIH, 2013). These are two contrasting or bipolar points the complementary that comes
along conventional medication and alternative opposing conventional. The third category is integrative it is the encompassing of the non–main stream
health approaches in a holistic, multidisciplinary, collaborative approach by combining conventional and alternative medicine to healing
therapy.(Fontaine, 2011). The five domains deal mainly with methods of CAM therapies.

Holistic Approaches Of Weight Management With Type 2 Diabetes

  • 1. Holistic Approaches Of Weight Management With Type 2 Diabetes Holistic Approaches to Weight Management with Type 2 Diabetes Cynthia Lewis American College of Health Care Sciences Abstract Weight management is key to avoiding the onsite of chronic disease and illness. Currently in the United States and globally, obesity and Type 2 diabetes are on the rise and are near epidemic proportions. Nearly 1/3 of Americans are overweight and 1 in 3 have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes (CDC, 2015). Therefore, it is essential that all health practitioners understand the options available when helping clients and patients learn how to not only adjust to a diagnosis of diabetes, but also to understand how to lose weight and keep it off. Several holistic approaches are described in this paper that can help compliment the conventional medical plan for weight management and Type 2 diabetes. Nearly 80% of Americans use herbal medicine and 38 % use some form of Complimentary Alternative Medicine (CAM) in addition to their medical care (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2015). Holistic care addresses not only the weight management issues, but also restores balance to all aspects of the person. Holistic Approaches to Weight Management with Type 2 Diabetes Currently in the United States, Type 2 diabetes is becoming a major, chronic illness that is affecting 1 in 3 Americans (CDC, 2015). One of the primary actions an overweight person must do is lose weight and reduce their BMI. This seems like a simple matter of calories in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Course Summary, And Myself Reflection Course Summary, and Myself reflection While attending lectures of Life Style Modifications For Community Leaders, it adds new information, and changing my bad habit to the better one. Actually, from the first class I realized that our body is not constant not just anatomy and physiology. But it is a most complicated system it react with universe, energy, vibrations, and power, which located everywhere in and around us. Throughout classes and my colleagues presentations, I got a historical story for each alternative medicine style how it started, its benefits, and how can use it effectively. Hence, classes flow began with the overview of the human power and how it affects by energy fields and vibration. For the first time, I have heard about chakras his designed points in our body that it needs proper clearance through several mediation styles. When a person uses meditation to remove bad checkers, the human body will positively react physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Even food is our naturalmedicine, so we have to monitor our food ingredients carefully; for example, garlic is our natural antibiotics, turmeric powder is an antitoxin and protect our body from cancer, onion and cabbage is the best insulin stimulants. Not only monitor food ingredients, but also the ways of cooking it; namely, microwave converts the molecules inside food until it loses its benefits. Introducing meditation by our class guests Mr. Duggan Selkirk, who taught us how practice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Use Of Complementary And Alternative Therapies In the early 1900's antibiotic medications appeared thus decreasing the use of complementary and alternative therapies, however their popularity was regained in the 1970's (Kramlich, 2014). The use of complementary and alternative therapies is an increasing trend that individuals seek out if they need relief from other medical approaches, if they feel they are missing something from Canada's health care system, to increase over health and to prevent further illness. These therapies are a trend that has increased in the last two decades in Canada (Miller, 2001). A cross–sectional study was conducted by a Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) nationally, directing 400,055 Canadian's ages thirteen and older in 2001 to 2007 to participate. The CCHS established that around 12% of Canadians used some form of complementary or alternative therapy aid in the past 12 months (Metcalfe et al, 2001). Debra Kramlich wrote an article titled "Introduction to Complementary, Alternative and Traditional Therapies" (2001) and compared statistics across numerous studies that were performed on complementary and alternative therapies. One study showed the rates of disclosure by individuals using complementary and alternative therapies. Two–thirds reported that they did not disclose their use of these therapies to their physicians. A cross–sectional survey discussed the increasing lack of disclosure rates in pregnant women that went from 1% in 2006 to 50% in 2013. A systematic review was briefly ... • 4. Compare And Contrast Alternative And Alternative Medicine Alternative medicine refers to the practices that are different from the conventional approach in the field of medicine. Usually, the methods used in alternative medicine got its founding principles on the philosophies that are opposite of those in modern–day medicine. In addition, it also integrates the use of spiritual practices, new approaches, or pre–modern medical traditions in the healing process. Alternative health care is a holistic way of caring for our body, mind and spirit. It is called alternative because it offers a way of caring for our health that is not conventional or what we are used to in the Western world. In the Western world caring for our health is done mostly by the administration of medicines, many of which are synthetic, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But with the advent of these drugs we gradually forgot alternative health care in favor of conventional medicine. One reason was that conventional medicine was fast and predictable. You do not have to search for the herb and boil it and make a concoction out of it. You just go to the drugstore, present the prescription your doctor gave you, receive the medicine from the pharmacist or his/her aide and pay for it. Upon reaching home, you just take the medicine. It is so convenient. But the recent experience of people taking conventional drugs is that they may lead to dependence on these drugs and larger doses may be required upon subsequent intakes. Furthermore there are bad effects in taking these drugs. These happen especially with antibiotic drugs. So people began to look for alternative ways of healing, one that is not heavily dependent on synthetic drugs and one that heals body, soul and spirit so that the person really become whole. Some of the methods of alternative health care may be enumerated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. A Paradigm Shift to Complementary and Alternative Medicine A Paradigm Shift to Complementary and Alternative Medicine Over the last century, religion, spirituality, and science have all played a major role in health care, although they have never been integrated with traditional medical science in the United States. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a set of medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not part or integrated as part of Westernmedicine which is the dominant health care system in the United States. Religion and spirituality have both played dominant roles in healing since the beginning of history. Today it is believed that prayer and faith can bring healing and is referred to as holistic healing, or focus on the mind, body, and spirit rather... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of focusing on treating an illness, an approach toward total body health and prevention of disease is a much more eclectic system of health care. CAM can offer the alternative methods to healing which in combination with traditional methods can offer better healing and healing capacities. The shifting paradigm of traditional medicine and CAM will continue to prevail over the next few years due to the increasingly culturally diverse United States and the growing interest of alternative medicine practices and religious and spiritual approaches to healing. An integration of traditional methods and alternative medicine can provide better treatment for patients due to the direct relationship between stress and neuroendocrine responses in the human body. The psycho–physiological aspect of stress as it relates to disease has become more and more popular for study in recent times. This understanding has shifted the focus of healing to a more integrated one of understanding emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioral factors and how they directly affect health. As this understanding continues to shift, CAM and holistic medicine will become more and more popular and a definite shift will occur in our culture where CAM and Western Medicine are combined for a better health care ... • 6. The Pros And Cons Of Herbal Medicine Complementarity itself is the idea of "combining in such a way as to enhance or emphasize the qualities of each other or another" (English Oxford Dictionaries, 2017). Within the world of health practitioners, we often hear the phrase "complementary therapy", sometimes used interchangeably with "alternative therapy". In its own definition, the NHS borrows from the US Government's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH): When a non–mainstream practice is used together with conventional medicine, it's considered "complementary". When a non–mainstream practice is used instead of conventional medicine, it's considered "alternative"." (US, NCCIH, 2017) On the same NHS website page (UK, NHS UK, 2017), herbal medicine is described as being a common complement to its conventional counterpart. Remove conventional medicine from the equation and herbal medicine is deemed to be alternative. There is also a third category of integrative medicine "where complementary therapies are used within a conventional medical setting as part of a prescribed treatment" (Nursing Times, 2008). It is important to understand that these definitions are placed within a cultural, social and indeed historical context which makes them subjective. Whilst orthodox Western medicine is the dominant mainstream in the UK, we should be aware that this is not the case in other countries and cultures. • 7. The Doctor Of The Future As Thomas Edison once said, "the doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease" ("Alternative Medicine Quotes"). This quote is gradually becoming a popular philosophy among American citizens and holistic physicians who prefer alternative medicines to traditional medicines. In short, this quote explains how the clinicians of the future will practice preventive medicine. Physicians will instruct their patients on how to live an enhanced lifestyle, and also how to nurture their bodies physically so that they can avoid illness and disease in the first place. The alternative medicine philosophy is solely based upon the reality that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, many Americans distrust American drug companies, which seem as if they just aim to overmedicate American citizens in order to gain dollars. Society would prefer more natural and harmless remedies. A recent report concluded that 25 million Americans made an estimated 425 million visits to alternative care providers annually, which is more than the visits that were made to primary care physicians ("Alternative Medicine"). This statistic alone showcases American citizen's desire for alternative medicine care and treatment. Americans are without question, the most heavily medicated people on the Earth. When most Americans ponder about drug use in America, they immediately think of illegal drugs such as marijuana or cocaine. However, pharmaceutical drugs are far more widely used than illicit drugs are, and the use of such medications has skyrocketed over the past few decades (Thompson 12). According to a 2006 study by Boston University, eighty two percent of American adults and more than half of children take at least one medication (prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or herbal supplements) every day (Thompson 7). However, the forces that shape these statistics are highly controversial. The driving force is the pharmaceutical industry. With $291 billion in annual sales, the pharmaceutical industry is the fastest growing and most profitable sector of the American economy and spending on prescription drugs is the fastest ... • 8. Alternative Health Care Essays Alternative Health Care Alternative health cares, also known as holistic or homeopathic care, are countless ways of unconventional health care approaches to healing and improving illnesses. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann discovered homeopathy in the early 1800's. He was sick of the art of medicine practiced in his time; he said it was barbaric. He knew there had to be alternatives so, like any devoted science lover would do, he experimented on himself and his friends. Hahnemann found that large dosages of herbs increased symptoms so he decreased the dosage and found that the symptoms decreased and usually ceased (Smith 10). Homeopathy became popular in the nineteenth century. This may be accounted for because most patients at that time... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When someone chooses alternative care he must take into consideration its dangers. One could actually overdose on vitamins or misuse herbal therapies. "Instead of feeling better, I felt increasingly worse, like a spaced out zombie" complained Carol Copeland, a former holistic patient who almost lost her life to cancer because her homeopathic physicians were too proud to think they were wrong thus they neglected an ovarian cyst (Copeland 104 & Wekesser 95). Another problem with these unconventional health care alternatives is that they give false relief. What this means is that when someone uses a holistic remedy and then feels relief he tends to credit the remedy. This method does not hold water because most ailments resolve themselves (headache for example). Nevertheless, holistic medicine has strengths. One, it recognizes the psychological, environmental and social aspects of illness. Two, it involves the patient in his own treatment with activities etc... And three, it emphasizes preventive medicine as its base (holistic). Holistic medicine is a practice of health cares that that emphasizes treatment of the entire patient's body, mind and spirit. Homeopathic care, compared to allopathic is expensive. There are no doctor's visits or expensive antibiotic prescriptions necessary. This is not to say that doctors are not useful; obviously, if there were a serious injury one should not hesitate to go to a medical (allopathic) doctor (Smith ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The integrative medicine is a term that is used to explain a different method of treatment and care in the medical field. Alternative Approaches And Future Directions ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS Although many RBPs recognize RNA in a sequence specific manner, sequence information alone is not sufficient to reliably predict ICP27 binding sites. In the infected cell, other RBPs will cooperate and compete when binding to viral transcipts; therefore it is critical to study ICP27–RNA interactions within the cellular environment. The iCLIP–seq experiments will provide an in vivo, transcriptome–wide map of ICP27–RNA binding sites during lytic HSV–1 infection. Importantly, the high resolution of iCLIP–seq should allow us to identify a consensus recognition element from which oligonucleotides will be generated for use in Specific Aim 2. In the case that the standard iCLIP conditions... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Specific Aim 2: Explore the role of RNA interaction interface residues in ICP27 function during viral infection. This specific aim will be performed in collaboration with Dr. Alexander Golovanav and will investigate the phenotype of ICP27 recombinants with mutated RNA interface residues within the RGG motif. BACKGROUND Previous studies performed by Dr. Golovanov and his research team have elucidated how the ICP27 homolog, herpes virus saimiri (HVS) ORF57, specifically recognizes viral transcripts in the nucleus and introduces them to TREX complex member Aly/REF in order to promote the export of HVS mRNA. Using NMR spectroscopy, Dr. Golovanov identified the sites of direct contact between ORF57–specific RNA oligomers (14merS) and ORF57 in the absence and presence of Aly/REF. These studies demonstrated that when Aly/REF is present, part of the ORF57–RNA binding site, composed of an О±–helix (R–b helix), binds preferentially to Aly/REF. This competitively displaces viral mRNA from the R–b helix to Aly/REF, but contact with ORF57 is maintained through an adjacent flanking region. At the same time, the flexible N–terminal region of Aly/REF also comes into contact with the bound viral mRNA and ultimately leads to the cooperative formation of a ternary ORF57–RNA–REF complex (Fig. 7). Despite the lack of sequence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Adhd : Alternative Approaches For Disruptive Behavior Essay ADHD: Alternative Approaches to Disruptive Behavior Conrad Landis Middle Tennessee State University This review intends to shed light on the potential overdiagnosis, over medicalization, and various behavior modification approaches to ADHD. Emphasis is placed on the impact of assessment by physicians as well as mindfulness to the idea of doing no harm. Evidence shows that behavior therapy is recommended as the first line of defense thus supporting the theory that disruptive behavior can be effectively treated when utilizing appropriate parent/child development strategies. ADHD: Alternative Approaches to Disruptive Behavior Controversy continues to surround a disorder which tends to classify vast numbers of unruly children as abnormal. It is officially recognized as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) in the fifth publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The National Institute of Health (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, n.d.) states, "For a person to receive a diagnosis of ADHD, the symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity–impulsivity must be chronic or long–lasting, impair the person's functioning, and cause the person to fall behind normal development for his or her age." Although this statement attempts to define criteria necessary for a possible diagnosis, much is left to be questioned about the nature of assessment, prescription, and potential behavior modification strategies. ... • 15. Congestion Of Congestion Based Fees Congestion, particularly in urban centers, has received much attention due to the resulting higher absolute travel times and lower travel time reliability, that lead to higher fuel consumption and significant environmental impacts. In response to the high congestion delays and costs, researchers and policymakers have studied the need and the implications of implementing congestion–based fees in a bid to alleviate congested network links and/or areas, and divert traffic as needed, temporally, spatially and modally, known as "triple divergence" (Downs, 1992). Proper evaluation of any congestion management strategy requires explicitly setting performance measures that can be used as indicators of how well the policy performs, and whether or not the initial goals are reached. Congestion pricing is a widely used policy aiming to mitigate congestion along heavily congested facilities. The rationale behind congestion pricing is that users are charged a toll fee in order to use the facility, in a bid to alleviate congestion and improve travel time along this facility, and/or collect revenue to be allocated in congestion–mitigation projects that would enhance the users' experience and the system performance overall. There are different implementation schemes, depending on the level of sophistication that the agency wishes to achieve: unique vs. differentiated toll by vehicle type/class, fixed vs. dynamic toll rates based on the traffic conditions, tolled lanes in conjunction with ... Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a term used to describe medical products and practices that are not part of conventional medicine used and practiced by western or allopathic medicine. Our conventional medicine is practiced by medical doctors, doctor of osteopathic medicine and allied health professionals, such as psychologists, and registered nurses. Complementary medicine means no more than "in addition to" your standard care. To elaborate by standard I mean standard to the type of illness for example hypnosis is a standard part of psychiatry, but not one of a cancer treatment. A good example of complementary medicine include, herbal remedies, and naturopathic medicine. Alternative medicine is medicine that claims to heal and is based on historical or cultural traditions, rather than on scientific evidence. The entire discussion of him being a permanent employee for one company and temporary for other is only a way of escaping the possibility of making a payment. This does not reflect strongly on part of the employer. Alternative 4– The parent company Mabey Bridge, despite not being sued, could pay Gene Elliot, in part, full or on some other criteria, as he was its permanent employee. This possibility will come into the picture if all other companies somehow are able to stay clear of any payment. The parent company should definitely do something about its valued employee who was sent to a project by the company on basis of his competencies. Thought the company may not seem directly responsible but they were responsible in selecting and approving the contractor and his choice of company for execution of the work. The employee would trust the choice of his company and hence the company is always responsible for its employee. Zhiyuan Li Philosophy 3000 Frankfurt Without Counter–Examples: An Alternative Possibility Harry Frankfurt (1969) argues that the principle of alternative possibilities (PAP): (PAP) a person is morally responsible for what he has done only if he could have done otherwise (829) is false, because there are cases where a person is morally responsible for what she has done even if she could not have done otherwise (835–6). Call such cases Frankfurt–style cases. A lot of literature thereafter has been targeted on these Frankfurt–style cases, particularly whether it's really possible to construct them. Among critics of Frankfurt, David Widerker (2003) takes one step further and he grants, for the sake of his argument, that it is possible to construct Frankfurt–style cases ; however, he argues that even so, Frankfurt's argument still fails because there are counter–examples to Frankfurt–style cases, which are in favor of PAP (60–2). This paper is a defense of Frankfurt. Having said that, however, I think Widerker has developed a very strong criticism of Frankfurt which in some sense takes away his prima facie intuition. Therefore, it seems to me not enough for defenders of Frankfurt to respond by just refuting the counter–examples Widerker provides against Frankfurt–style cases – they must somehow bring their intuition back. This is exactly what I want to pursue in this paper. I will argue that Frankfurt's argument may be reconstructed in an alternative way, which does not depend ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For instance, he wants, in his new approach, the students to take action against the oppressive elements of reality (paragraph 11), which means that students will be able to change the society when they see problems and will become revolutionaries, but he refuses to mention the dramatic problems that these revolutionary ideas could produce. Freire also didn't take into consideration in his essay the students' mentality. It's not always about the teachers, but the students have also a big role in receiving knowledge. A motivated student might actually be able to learn by the banking method, whereas an unmotivated student might get worse with learning by the problem–posing method. So it is true that one method could be better than the other, but there is always the students' mindset that plays a major role in education and learning. If Freire had shown both sides of his ideas along with making his essay more discussable by asking questions, he would have been able to show less hypocrisy and strengthen his approach, but at the same time, this would have affected the validity of his thoughts and weakened them. Alternative medicine is a non–traditional form of medicine composed of a broad range of healing techniques and treatments, usually consisting of non–drug medicine based interventions. Treatments can range anywhere from therapeutic approaches, philosophic ideas, dieting, meditation methods, acupuncture, homeopathy, and aromatherapy, amongst others. In animals, it would be expected not to see this behaviour, for instance, optimal foraging theory (Pyke, 1984) argues that an animal 's ability forage ultimately effects there overall evolutionary fitness in terms of ability to survive and the ability for the genes to be passed on. Advantages of acupuncture have been studied with positive results from its analgesic effects and the ability to be used across the life span. However, more research is needed to define specific approaches such as for treatment of disabilities, which can be difficult to pinpoint its effectiveness. Acupuncture is popular by name, but "it is used at a low level by a small to moderate proportion of the population for conditions that are either mild, self–limiting, or without a definitive conventional treatment, and it is rarely used in lieu of conventional medical care"(McKenzie, 2011, p. 1). • 36. Pros And Cons Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE 2 Alternative Medicine Some people often apply complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) if they do not feel the needed result after the traditional modern treatment. Contrarily, another group of humans does not completely believe in standard medical care using only this type of medicine. Thus, manual therapy is rather an effective type of non–traditional medicine requiring special education and professional skills from each CAM practitioner. According to Mayo Clinic (2014), "Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is the popular term for health and wellness therapies that have typically not been part of conventional Western medicine." Manipulative therapy or manual therapy belongs to CAM and it is a physical treatment mainly used by massage therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, osteopathic physicians, osteopaths, and chiropractors to treat musculoskeletal disability and pain. Moreover, manual therapy usually includes muscle manipulation and kneading, joint manipulation and joint mobilization. Manual therapy includes various techniques for patients' treatment; however, before each procedure the manual practitioner has to perpetrate a full assessment of the nerve and blood supply in addition to muscle and bone assessment for determination of possible complications after these techniques. Only after the full exam can the practitioner use one or more types of manual physical therapy, which happen to include soft ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Non Pharmacological Complementary And Alternative... Policy statement Incorporate non–pharmacological complementary and alternative treatments with conventional medicine to treat complex chronic pain conditions as a collaborative and integral part of the health care system. Supporting background research Chronic pain is a serious problem with more than 40 million adults suffering from severe pain as reported by the National Institute for Health (NIH) (2010). According to the NIH (2010), chronic pain sufferers use more health care, have worse overall health, and have more disability. The NIH estimates the economic cost of chronic pain at $635 billion annually within the United States from both healthcare costs and lost worker productivity (NIH, 2010). The American Academy of Pain Management (AAPM) stated that yearly, millions of people suffer from acute or chronic pain, which exacts a tremendous cost in health care costs, rehabilitation, and lost worker productivity along with an emotional and financial burden on people and their families (n.d.). According to the AAPM, the costs of unrelieved pain are more than just the physical pain as unrelieved pain can result in longer hospital stays, increased rate of re–hospitalization, increased outpatient visits, and decreased ability to function fully leading to lost income and insurance coverage due to inability to work (n.d). The AAPM (n.d) reports the most commonly reported chronic pain conditions as low back pain (27%), headache or migraine pain (15%), neck pain (15%), and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Ethropharmacology Vs Ethnopsychiatry 13. Two domains, out of the multitude of possibilities, of Ethnomedical systems that anthropologists would be interested in investigating are ethnopharmacology and ethnopsychiatry. The domain of ethnopharmacology is at a basic level, the study of the uses of what some may consider 'drugs' or medicines to treat an illness within a cultural context. Ethnopharmacology can be both curative and palliative forms of treatment. Ethnopharmacology can be something within biomedicine such as taking an antibiotic to cure a bacterial infection. It can also be something considered an 'alternative' form of healthcare such as ingesting and herbal remedy, like Chamomile tea, to ease an upset stomach. Another domain, ethnopsychiatry focuses on the perceptions of mental health from a cultural perspective. This domain could be intriguing to anthropologists because unlike biomedicine, many cultures do not separate mental and physical health and health practices into different categories; but instead believe they are interconnected. 14. Two types of complimentary and alternativemedicine are meditation and chakra alignment. Meditation observes the idea that the mind and body, mental and physical health is interconnected. The main idea is that once an individual has gone through bullying and to know what it is like can affect others to want to make the wrong choices. It relates to Cross and Barnes, because they both discuss behavior when it comes to bullying. The authors include researched data within the article that will provide resourceful information to go in the essay. This example from being bullied can make it easier to want to be a part of negative actions. It will be very useful for this essay and will provide a lot of evidence to these situations that are happening. Baroutsis, A., Mills, M., McGregor, G., Riele, K., & Hayes, D. (2016). • 40. Nontraditional Medicine "More than 500 types of alternative medicine exists, and thousands of treatment approaches are possible." (Billitteri, 9). If we have so many other options why are so many people relying on solely western medicine that can be addictive and make you sicker than you already are? Modern medicine has not always been around and sometimes people can't afford it so they have no choice but to use nontraditional medicine. Nontraditional medicine should be assimilated into modern medicine because people used it before we had modern medicine, they can not afford it, and prescribed medication can be extremely addictive. "Patients who chose alternative therapies to treat a common, curable cancer instead of opting for the recommended medical treatment double their risk of death, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute." (Scutti). But, it is understandable why some people would like to try an alternate form of treatment for their cancer. Some western treatment methods of cancer are things like chemotherapy and radiation. Each of which can have multiple complications. Chemotherapy works by attacking active cells, cells that are growing and dividing, like some healthy cells (ASCO Cancer.Net). This can cause Headaches, stomach pain, muscle pain, and nerve pain such as burning, numbness or shooting pains(ASCO Cancer.Net). "High doses of radiation therapy are used to destroy cancer cells. Side effects occur because radiation therapy can also damage healthy cells and tissues near the treatment area."(ACSO Cancer.Net). Some of the side effects are skin problems, fatigue, and some specific side effects that can happen due to what part of the body is being treated(ASCO Cancer.net). With all these side effects it is understandable if someone would like to try an alternative way of treating their disease. They are already suffering from a terrible disease that makes them sick, they should not have to go through the side effects of the treatment if there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Complementary And Alternative Medicine ( Cam ) Abstract: Although allopathic medicine or termed Western medicine is more widely accepted than complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) it has only started to emerge since the 1800s. Complementary and alternative modalities have been around for thousands of years, and for some can be found on cave drawings. As allopathic medicine has different modalities, so does complementary and alternative medicine such as: acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, aromatherapy and massage to name a few. Not all of CAM modalities are accepted in allopathic medicine, therefore are not integrated into the services. However, as more evidence–based research is conducted more of the CAM modalities are being shown to be helpful and aid in many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Complementary medicine is one that is "non–mainstream", but can be "used together with conventional medicine" (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2016). On the other hand, alternative medicine, also non–mainstream, is used instead "of conventional medicine" (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2016). There are many different approaches to using conventional and complementary and alternative medicine together, creating an integrative effect. Per the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (2016) "most complementary health approaches fall into one of two subgroups–natural products or mind and body practices". Natural products such as herbs, minerals, and dietary aids can pose a risk to persons using them with conventional medicine. Natural products that are taken as dietary supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and must be deemed safe by the firm that is marketing it (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2016). • 42. CAM Modalities is an Alternative Therapy CAM Modalities Conventional treating of patients is not always the best treatment; there are routes a provider can explore to assist in the overall health and wellbeing of the patient. Complementary and alternative therapy (CAM) is the other route for the patient. Each of these modalities can produce a healing effect or relief from an ailment that will have an effect in a positive manner on the quality of life. Too many times patients become settled or complacent in his or her disease process and never look into the other routes. Basics Non–main stream therapy is in three categories and five domains by definition. The categories are complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine and the domains are biologically based therapies, manipulative and body–based methods, mind–body interventions, energy therapies, and alternative medical systems. Complementary refers to a non–mainstream approach with conventional medicine in conjunction, while alternative refers to a non–mainstream approach in place of conventional medicine. (NIH, 2013). These are two contrasting or bipolar points the complementary that comes along conventional medication and alternative opposing conventional. The third category is integrative it is the encompassing of the non–main stream health approaches in a holistic, multidisciplinary, collaborative approach by combining conventional and alternative medicine to healing therapy.(Fontaine, 2011). The five domains deal mainly with methods of CAM therapies. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
