Editor's Notes

  • #2 Our corporate payoff is Global Retail Solutions. Global has two meanings: Global in terms of geography – we are a geographically spread company that operates where our customers are. 2. Global solutions in terms of Total solutions within our niche which is In-store Communication and Merchandising. In-store Communication – how to provide price and product information in the best way and how to help the customer to navigate and read the store environment. Merchandising – how to present the products in the best way and how to support efficient store operations.
  • #5 Our Mission – why we have a right to exist as a company. “Creating an attractive and engaging in-store environment that enhances the shopping experience” To fulfill our mission we need our customers – retail chains (food and non-food) that provide the stores and the brand manufacturers that supply products to the store. Providing a good shopping experience has been a trend for many years but for HL it is not only about the latest trend but more long term. Stimulating the consumers to buy more is part of it but a good shopping experience is also very much about time – getting in the store and find what you want as fast as possible. It looks like a paradox - a store environment that is logical and well-structured yet stimulating and inspiring.
  • #6 To succeed in managing this we believe that investing in in-store communication and merchandising is one of the true keys in retail.
  • #8 Automatic feeding systems (Roller track) and bulk food solutions (3e Bin) are recent new examples that are on the way to become new standards and we continue today by entering also into the field of new technologies focusing light solutions and Digital Signage. We are really convinced that bringing innovation is the responsibility of the market leader and we take this task seriously.
  • #9 Today’s understandings – tomorrow’s innovations. We are practical people that always believe that the best ideas come from hands-on experiences and the practical life. That’s why we have started an initiative called the HL In-store Day. All companies in the group allocate one day per year working in a store of one of our customers - filling-up shelves, fronting, cleaning etc.
  • #10 This also includes the mother company with our CEO and management team like on the pictures.
  • #11 So, what do we do? HL develops and commercialises solutions that improve store efficiency. We work both with solutions where the objective is to push sales, by making sure that prodcuts are displayed and communicated in a way that attratcts shoppers… …but also with solutions that reduce cost, by facilitating for staff to fill up products, and by automising the work with front facing. Our objective is always that the customer shall se an increased profitability from our solutions.
  • #12 Depending on the situation or the need of a specific customer, or a select category within a retailer, we can suggest a solution that focus on the key challenge. We have three focus areas Labour saving - Labour costs is one of the biggest cost in all retail operations and investing in improved efficiency gives a very tangible return on investment. Increase sales - 70-80% of the buying decisions are made in the store. Optimising categories and improving product presentation has a vital effect on sales. Through better presentation of impulse categories, by improving rotation in fresh food areas (which also decrease wastage) and by reducing out of stocks. Differentiation - our experience from working with the world’s leading retailers and brands has taught us that investing in differentiation of the in-store environment is key to be successful in today’s competitive landscape.
  • #13 Labour savings and productivity gains: Filling up shelves and fronting are the everyday task of the people working in the stores. By providing simple tools a lot of the time can be saved or turned into other more sales oriented tasks. One example is the merchandising system Facer™ that we have developed with a leading retailer in the UK. It started as a solutions for the wine category but has now turned into a solution that is being used in many different categories such as oil & vinegar, cans and tins, all kinds of beverages, and also washing powder. Delhaize in Belgium is a customer that uses Facer™ for almost every category in the store and sees great benefits with the system.
  • #15 Improved product presentation leads to increased sales. Especially important in impulse categories like confectionery (picture of an Optimal + chocolate solutions) or in high margin categories like health and beauty (picture of a H&B solution with Optimal + and Ad’lite). A good presentation also drives the product selection upwards. Shoppers buy more Brands and private labels if they have the right information, if not they go to low price products. Also finding the right category, the right segment of the category, the right shelf and the right product in an easy way, will improve the customer loyalty and also lead to increased sales.
  • #16 Finally new technologies such as Digital Signage solution with Touch screens are no becoming available enabling retailers to re-use a lot of their existing digital materials where they matter the most – in the store.
  • #17 Attractive and selling in-store environment that makes a difference. Fully faced categories, a clear and logical store that is easy to navigate in or nice bulk food sections attracting eco-consumers are all examples of investments in the store environment that are crucial to survive or take market share. You might also want to invest in solutions that help create uniqueness and personality in your store, to differentiate from competition and make the shopping experience in your store special. This is important also to fight the multi channel behavior where more and more shoppers go on-line to do their purchases. Ie bulk bins have been a very successful way for Auchan in France to create a unique proposition in the eco-segment, that has been very appreciated by shoppers but also has a positive impact on category margin.
  • #29 Overall there are many gains to be made that can give increased profitability. With a new generation cartons and mechandising solutions the efficiency of the store will increase. There will be increase sales, and reduced cost, and everybody will benefit.
