A case study by Stanford Health Care, in collaboration with Taylor Design, for how big data was collected, analyzed, and used the build a data model that guided the master planning for a new interventional platform. It is crucial to understand how a business case model differs from a data model used to predict demand for resources like Operating Rooms and Catherization Labs.
The presentation will demonstrate how historical data from the Electronic medical record (EMR) system was used to assess utilization of ORs and Cath Labs and project future demand. Additional analysis evaluated need for prep/recovery bays vs traditional pre-operative and post anesthesia care unit (PACU) bays. With some basics of process engineering and some relatively simple math, some very powerful information can be surfaced for the clinical business managers to turn into insights that help guide design and layout.
The first phase of construction on the new integrated interventional platform is scheduled to start construction in 2020. The second phase is scheduled to start design based on the analysis in 2020.
The presenters will share their original plan, dips in the road, and how they were able to achieve results that included potentially huge cost savings.

Researchers and care providers wanted to have access to all of the patients` vitals signs (temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate) but most of this data wasn?t recorded, only a few readings a day were posted to the patients Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The EMR isn`t meant to store such volume of data, let alone to perform any data mining on it. This session will describe the architecture of the solution that was implemented to collect these vital signs automatically from Bedside Medical Devices (BDMI), and store them into a temporary storage, then load them into a Hadoop cluster. The session will also cover how the team married this vital signs data in the HDFS (Hadoop File System) with the rest of the EMR data for our Principles Investigators (PI) in our research institute to search for correlations between administered medications, diagnosis, and vital signs readings. The session will describe the reasons behind the design decisions that were made, such as using a Cloud Hadoop cluster versus on-premises while maintaining HIPAA.

This webinar with our partner Pivotal aired in July 2016.
The increasing sophistication of modern medicine, a seemingly endless supply of data, and the ability to perform large-scale computation is transforming clinical research. However, utilising data to generate new treatments and therapies has continued to prove complicated. The silo-based information systems built over the last 30 years are simply unable to scale to support today’s use cases.
Aridhia, creators of AnalytiXagility, the ground-breaking research and healthcare data analysis platform, is now enabling its customers to rapidly analyse massive amounts of data in meaningful ways to change how diseases are understood, managed and treated. Powered by Pivotal Greenplum, AnalytiXagility is at the forefront of Advanced Clinical Research Information Systems (ACRIS), one of Gartner’s 10 “Transformational Digital Disruptors in Healthcare by 2025”.

Microsoft: A Waking Giant in Healthcare Analytics and Big DataDale Sanders
Ten years ago, critics didn’t believe that Microsoft could scale in the second generation of relational data warehouses, but they did. More recently, many of these same pundits have criticized Microsoft for missing the technology wave du jour in cloud offerings, mobile technology, and big data. But, once again, Microsoft has been quietly reengineering its culture and products, and as a result, they now offer the best value and most visionary platform for cloud services, big data, and analytics in healthcare.

Nikhil Gopinath, Senior Solutions Engineer for the Life Sciences at Saama, spoke at EyeforPharma's Clinical Trial Innovation Summit event in February 2017. These slides are from his "Leverage Big Data Analytics to Enhance Clinical Trials from Planning to Execution" presentation.
Microsoft: A Waking Giant In Healthcare Analytics and Big DataHealth Catalyst
In 2005, Northwestern Memorial Healthcare embarked upon a strategic Enterprise Data Warehousing (EDW) initiative with the Microsoft technology platform as the foundation. Dale Sanders was CIO at Northwestern and led the development of Northwestern’s Microsoft-based EDW. At that time, Microsoft as an EDW platform was not en vogue and there were many who doubted the success of the Northwestern project. While other organizations were spending millions of dollars and years developing EDW’s and analytics on other platforms, Northwestern achieved great and rapid value at a fraction of the cost of the more typical technology platforms. Now, there are more healthcare data warehouses built around Microsoft products than any other vendor. The risky bet on Microsoft in 2005 paid off.
In this context, Dale will talk about:
His up and down journey with Microsoft as an Air Force and healthcare CIO, and why he is now more bullish on Microsoft like never before
A quick review of the Healthcare Analytics Adoption Model and Closed Loop Analytics in healthcare, and how Microsoft products relate to both
The rise of highly specialized, cloud-based analytic services and their value to healthcare organizations’ analytics strategies
Microsoft’s transformation from a closed-system, desktop PC company to an open-system consumer and business infrastructure company
The current transition period of enterprise data warehouses between the decline of relational databases and the rise of non-relational databases, and the new Microsoft products, notably Azure and the Analytic Platform System (APS), that bridge the transition of skills and technology while still integrating with core products like Office, Active Directory, and System Center
Microsoft’s strategy with its PowerX product line, and geospatial analysis and machine learning visualization tools
Despite massive investment in both people and technology, health systems are still struggling to maximize the value of their greatest asset: their data. Delivering high-quality, valuable insight from data and pushing those insights to the frontline healthcare professionals remains challenging and expensive. According to a recent survey conducted by HealthLeaders Media, health systems are hiring more analytics staff than almost any other role in health care. We know there’s an alternative to the massive hiring of analytics staff, a better way to dramatically increase the efficiency of your existing resources and provide an ROI that grows over time. The better way is the Rapid Response Analytics Solution.
Rapid Response Analytics Solution (RRA Solution) consists of two elements: curated, modular data called DOS™ Marts and Population Builder, a powerful self-service tool that lets any type of user, from physician executive to frontline nurses and population health teams explore their data and quickly build and share populations without needing to know how to write SQL and data science code. Big Data Analytics for Healthcare Decision Support- Operational and ClinicalAdrish Sannyasi
Splunk’s data analytics platform could be utilized to solve many high impact business problems in healthcare delivery systems to reduce cost, improve patient outcome and safety, and enhance care coordination experience. Analyze observed behavior from healthcare event data and metadata to discover patterns, monitor compliance, and optimize the workflow. Furthermore 80% of healthcare data is unstructured (clinical free text and documentation), or semi-structured and many new data sources are such as tele health, mobile health, sensors, and devices are getting integrated in many healthcare systems specifically in the area of chronic disease management. So, one need analytics software that can harvest, interpret, enrich, normalize, and model diverse structured and unstructured data and analytics approaches that embrace the “data turmoil” by relying less on standardized data items and more on the capability to process data in any format.
