The first gangster film was The Musketeers of Pig Alley, a 17-minute American silent black-and-white short film produced in 1912. It is considered the earliest known film about organized crime and its use of follow focus, where the background goes out of focus while characters stay in focus, was innovative for its time. The film was shot on location in New York City and used real street gang members as extras.
