2. Basketball
•It is invented by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield,
Massachusetts, USA in 1891
•It was designed as an indoor sport, which was
played during the winter season.
•It originally used a soccer ball and peach baskets
placed on the top of poles. Players tried to shoot the
ball into the basket. Thus, the name basketball was
used for the sport ever since.
3. Basketball
•It is played by two teams.
•The objective of this game is to outscore the
opposing team at the end of playing time.
•The score is made every time the ball goes inside
the opposing team’s basket or ring.
•Either the two teams can play as the offensive team
and defensive team.
4. •Offensive team – it is the team who has the ball.
•Defensive team – it is the team who tries to prevent
the offensive team from scoring.
•Inside the court each teams has five members
playing the five basketball roles or positions.
5. Roles or Positions in Basketball
• Point guard – leads team when it has the ball and is known as the
team’s ball handler and passer.
• Shooting guard – attempts long-range shots and is known as the
team’s best shooter.
• Small forward – it is said to be the most versatile among five
positions.
• Power forward – controls the game near the basket by blocking
shots, dominating rebounds, and setting screens.
• Center – usually plays near the baseline or close the basket to
contest shots, gather rebounds and set screens on plays.
6. Basketball
• Substitute players stay on their bench until they are called to
replace another team member who is playing on the court.
• An amateur basketball game is divided into four quarters of ten
minutes each.
• In professional basketball, the game is divided in four quarters
of 12 minutes each.
• It needs a basketball, basketball ring with a net, attached to a
backboard and a basketball court to play basketball.
